Album Description
Two points make this CD unique: Its repertoire and its sound quality.

The Sonate Posthume by Ravel and the works by Arriaga and Guridi are outstanding pieces never before recorded on the clarinet. The World Premiere “Iris” is another outstanding piece, by emerging composer Pascal Gaigne. All four works may very well become standard clarinet repertoire.

This CD was recorded, edited and mastered using the most advanced 24 bit technology. Following the example of great recordings, like those by Glenn Gould, we spent days finding the ideal placement of microphones to be able to reproduce fully the natural sound of the clarinet and the Steinway piano, as well as the sound traveling in space. The sound quality of Espina Ruiz’s high register is unheard of.

Clarinetist Oskar Espina Ruiz is gaining recognition as a connoisseur of Basque music. All the works in this album, except those by Milhaud and Saint-Saëns are by Basque composers. His recent research, recordings, and concerts on Basque composers were fully supported by the Basque Government. Indeed, the fact that Oskar Espina Ruiz is a Basque folk musician who evolved into a professional clarinetist in New York City adds a particularly interesting edge to his output.

So many of these carols are so beautiful that it's hard to pick out which are the best. More likely than not, that's going to be a highly personal choice but if you see one of your favorites on the track list you can be sure that it's well performed.

In short, this album should be part of your Christmas collection. It's best listened to in the quiet time on Christmas Eve.

A bleak Mid-winter.......2003-10-17

The real letdown is my own fault: I didn't notice that "In the Bleak Midwinter" is the Darke version, not Holst. Ugh. If only the RealAudio samples had stretched one song further down the song list.

That should be more than enough recommendation for this excellent collection of carols by the same choir. The voices are angelic, the organ accompaniment is just right, the arrangements are both musical and subtle, and the Cathedral acoustic adds just the right air of sacredness. Heavenly.

Album Description

The Sonate Posthume by Ravel and the works by Arriaga and Guridi are outstanding pieces never before recorded on the clarinet. The World Premiere “Iris” is another outstanding piece, by emerging composer Pascal Gaigne. All four works may very well become standard clarinet repertoire.

This CD was recorded, edited and mastered using the most advanced 24 bit technology. Following the example of great recordings, like those by Glenn Gould, we spent days finding the ideal placement of microphones to be able to reproduce fully the natural sound of the clarinet and the Steinway piano, as well as the sound traveling in space. The sound quality of Espina Ruiz's high register is unheard of.

Clarinetist Oskar Espina Ruiz is gaining recognition as a connoisseur of Basque music. All the works in this album, except those by Milhaud and Saint-Saëns are by Basque composers. His recent research, recordings, and concerts on Basque composers were fully supported by the Basque Government. Indeed, the fact that Oskar Espina Ruiz is a Basque folk musician who evolved into a professional clarinetist in New York City adds a particularly interesting edge to his output.
