About the Artist
USTAD ZIA MOHIUDDIN DAGAR (1929-1990) was the world's most renowned exponent of India's ancient rudra vina, the instrumental ancestor of the sitar. He was also one of the few masters of dhrupad, the slow, austere, meditative traditional music still performed as it was centuries ago by Dagar's forefathers in the Mughal courts. He had several promising students in India, and in the United States, where he performed and taught regularly since his American debut in 1968. Dagar was affiliated with the American Society for Eastern Arts in Berkeley, California, and he also taught for many years at the University of Washington, in Seattle, where these concert performances were recorded in 1975 (Marwa) and 1979 (Bageshree). -- Ira Landgarten

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Fine recitals from a master.......2007-05-13

This is a fine recital by the late Z M Dagar, playing at the height of his considerable powers. The human voice has always been regarded as the pinnacle for rendering classical North Indian music but the North Indian Been or Rudra Veena was considered the second best until the 20th century. In the 20th century most musicians switched to sitar, sarod or occasionally Surbahar (for plucked instruments) so it was difficult to understand why the Rudra Veena was this highly regarded. When one listens to Z M Dagar, one can understand the former premium position occupied by this instrument.

Nevertheless, listeners who are familiar with sitar and sarod recitals might find his playing more serious and less flashy. But, in rendering the true character of the ragas he plays, he is unequalled.
