Album Description
Since it’s premiere at the Chapel Royal in St. James’ Place on November 27, 1743, Händel’s Te Deum for the victory of Dettingen has been regarded as one of the greatest choral masterworks in the English language. Grandiose choruses, finely wrought vocal solos, a festive orchestration and brilliant word-painting deliver a profoundly moving and uplifting listening experience. For those unfamiliar with the Dettingen Te Deum, this is an excellent opportunity to explore the work’s many treasures for themselves. The heartbreaking simplicity “Symphony” for two clarino trumpets alone is worth the price of admission!

Amazon.com essential recording

Bryn Terfel has it all. His rich, deep baritone voice is capable of navigating the rapids and doing the vocal leaps and cartwheels that Handel routinely demands of his singers, even the ones with big, deep voices that usually move more slowly. He is Welsh, and in his mastery of words--clarity of projection and precise emotional expression--he calls to mind another great Welsh performer, Richard Burton. This recital, accompanied by Sir Charles Mackerras with skill and sensitivity, runs the whole gamut of Handel's vocal styles, from military bluster (powerfully present in the first aria, "Arm, arm, ye brave") to humble piety (in the second selection, "Vouchsafe, O Lord"). There is erotic awe in "Where'er you walk," comic grotesquerie in "O ruddier than the cherry," and pure splendor in "The trumpet shall sound." A marvelous recital. --Joe McLellan

5 out of 5 stars Great fun and a tour de force for Bryn Terfel.......2005-09-18

Bryn Terfel's flexible, powerful, and velvety (give me a better adjective for this) voice is well suited to navigating the variety of bombastic and melodramatic arias characterizing Handel's various offerings. These are well punctuated by more tender passages which the composer was equally adept at producing. All in all a most satisfying recording that I seem never to tire of hearing.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding variety of Baritone Repertoire.......2004-02-19

Bryn Terfel offers an engaging sound, and a very historically accurate performance of the works, other than the arias that were originally written for counter tenors. For all Baritones and Basses, and those studying and teaching the repertoire, this is a must have CD, as it employs an outstanding combination of the finest arias and the most often performed.

5 out of 5 stars "I rage, I rage, I melt, I burn!".......2003-11-06

This CD showcases popular Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel raging, melting, and burning his way through a wonderful variety of Handel arias (although I would have left out the 'Messiah' selections and gone for a few of Handel's 2,000 or so less-recorded songs).

According to Gerald Abraham in "Handel, a Symposium" the heroes that Terfel chose to bring to life in this recording generally had high soprano voices. Tenors and baritones were relegated to subordinate parts, and basses to those of tyrants or sages: "... in modern revivals of Handel's operas it is generally fatal to give [the castrato] parts to tenors or baritones to sing an octave lower."

In the first selection, Terfel takes on the role of Simon, brother of Judas Maccabaeus, which was originally a bass role. Critic Abraham could not object to this, although he might have a problem with the transposition of the arias for Demetrius ("Berenice, Queen of Egypt"), Caesar ("Julius Caesar in Egypt"), and Xerxes ("Xerxes"). If you are a purist, this CD might not be for you, but you'll miss out on some grand singing.

I'm especially fond of Terfel's handling of the slow, reflective arias "Verdi prati, selve amene" from 'Alcina,' and "Ombra mai fu" from 'Xerxes' (often called "Handel's Largo" despite the composer's "larghetto" marking). Here, the singer shuns lachrymose emoting. It is the purity of his tone and choice of dynamics that touch the heart.

"O ruddier than the cherry" from "Acis and Galatea" is robustly sung by the love-sick Polyphemus/Terfel. In spite of the buoyant central rhythm, every word is clearly enunciated. The preceding, accompanied recitative "I rage, I rage, I melt, I burn!" is a masterful, shimmering growl of emotion.

Along with Xerxes's plane tree and Polyphemus's cherries, Terfel returns to an arboreal subject in "Where'er you walk" from Semele. His command of musical and textual nuance is impressive in this tenderly sung aria. The ornamentation by Sir Charles Mackerras enhances rather than detracts from this beautiful love song.

Another highlight of this CD is Terfel's interpretation of "Revenge, revenge, Timotheus cries" from "Alexander's Feast." He snarls through the trumpets with frenzied, dead-on ornamentation. However there are a few unusual hesitations, such as a slight pause between 'Timotheus' and 'cries,' and at first hearing, I didn't care for them. Now they make textual sense to me. His hissing snakes and sparkling eyes are flawlessly emphasized. Each melisma is rhythmically unique and perfectly inflected.

The last three selections from Handel's "Messiah" are unfortunately rather ordinary. "Why do the nations" has a strange repeat, and Terfel seems to be singing it up into his mask which makes it sound two-dimensional. There is also a little too much flattening or 'whitening' of the melismas, plus an occasional unattractive growl. I much prefer Samuel Ramey's deep, seamless coloratura in these three bass arias.

Perhaps Handel's "Messiah" is one of those works that truly separates the bass-baritones from the basses.

Other than the above complaint, Bryn Terfel pays grand homage to the dramatic tension, the text, and the musicality of Handel's arias.

4 out of 5 stars Gran trabajo Bryn!.......2003-10-05

5 out of 5 stars LISTEN TO TERFEL.......2002-02-03

Since leading roles for bass-baritones in the operas of Handel are very, very rare, it is quite doubtful that we'll soon be seeing operatic super-star BRYN TERFEL in any international theatre performing what he says is a great love of his. This is truly a pity since it is more than a little uncommon to see and hear acting as fine as Terfel's coupled with a voice as rich and expressive as his.

Just a few nights ago, I was watching a television concert from Europe in which Anne Sofie von Otter sang 'Carmen' to Terfel's 'Escamillo' in selections from Bizet's opera. The old war horse 'The Toreador Song' has never sounded this fresh and exciting. Terfel can do what few others in his profession know how to do: he gets into the words as well as the music; he actually plays the character and presents what the composer and librettist might only have dreamed about.

Handel's operas, all of them so difficult in their coloratura passages, are seldom actually acted. One might as well just hear a concert version. But Terfel, as proven in this recording, acts as well as sings. My favorites include arias from JULIUS CAESAR and ALCINA, but every band on this CD is a winner.

Gorgeously conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras, the recording includes arias from the famous oratorios as well as from the operas: JUDAS MACCABAEUS and ALEXANDER'S FEAST are especially beautifully performed. And if you are used to a pallid, rumbling, muffled bass in your annual production of MESSIAH, listen to Terfel. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

      5 out of 5 stars MUSIC'S OWN MICHELANGELO.......2004-03-21

Given the right performance, Handel's Dettingen Te Deum is one of the most marvellous musical experiences I know. It was written, like the much slighter Dettingen anthem, to celebrate the comic-opera victory of King George the second over a startled Franco-Bavarian army in 1743. His Majesty's Anglo-Hanoverian troops had seemingly been trapped, but the King's horse bolted, his army took the spectacle for a heroic charge and followed with such gusto that the opposing forces snatched improbable defeat from the jaws of seeming victory. Thus cast as an unlikely war hero, the runcible monarch saw his chance and commissioned the two works from Handel.

A good many years ago a French performance with English soloists helped restore the Te Deum to the repertory after doing the necessary research into Handel's real intentions and restoring a proper balance between chorus and soloists to what had been presented previously as a lumbering and monotonous effort consisting almost entirely of chorus, and in consequence very understandably ignored. The performance was not particularly successful, and very dully recorded into the bargain, but it laid the groundwork for later interpreters more at home with the style. Listening to this absolutely superlative account from Preston and his Westminster Abbey performers I still feel a sense of gratitude to its predecessor for making me familiar with the work in the first place. There still seems to be a minor area of doubt regarding the precise nature of the some of the solos - the French version from Grimbert has two sopranos, Preston has a male alto but no women soloists and whether for that reason or simply through a better stylistic grasp the effect here is much preferable.

It is not really very long ago that a fatuous sport consisting of tracing alleged borrowings by Handel was played out on Israel in Egypt and this Te Deum as favourite turfs. It was great fun in its silly way. This work was charged as having been largely borrowed from a Te Deum by one Urio, and a counter-charge by Handel's loyal if uninformed champions maintained that Urio was a place not a person and that Handel was himself the author of the Urio Te Deum. Tovey was not especially well versed in the issue but he said the most sensible thing in many years when he remarked simply that the phrases being battled over were tags that anyone at all might have written and that trying to draw any conclusions from them out of context was completely pointless and futile. Tovey rightly drew attention to the magnificence of the start, and his vivid phrase came back to me as I heard that on this disc, where `the orchestra...batters out a sledgehammer tattoo on the tonic and dominant'. In the sheer power of making a musical statement, in the sheer sense of how to put words to music, in his instinct for timing and in his feeling for choral tone Handel at his greatest has an uncomfortable way of making every other composer seem almost an amateur. The great opening proclamations with their long pauses marked out by a ticking beat on the violins, and the intonations of `Holy, holy, holy' which the cherubim and seraphim continually do cry `continually, continually, continually, continually...', things like this were never borrowed from Urio or from anyone.

The performance seems to me completely outstanding in its professionalism, instinct for the idiom of the time and the idiom of this composer in particular. The recording matches it, as you will appreciate straightaway in the opening phrases. As a makeweight I am very pleased also to have the Dettingen anthem, not a masterpiece comparable with its great companion, but something that if I had been George II I would have thought myself lucky enough to have received as a tribute just on its own.

5 out of 5 stars Hooked on this disc.......2006-03-14

I have listened to this disc non-stop since I checked it out from the library two weeks ago! I have since ordered my own copy (a super bargain at $7 -- shop around).

Handel is one of my favorite composers, but I had never heard these works before. If you love Messiah or the Coronation Anthems, you need this disc!

3 out of 5 stars Scholars Be Darned, This Is Great Handel!.......2002-06-27

Some reviewers have not been kind to this recording, but then they also begin by saying the Detttingen Te Deum is not top-drawer Handel. I've loved this work since I heard it on one of the notoriously worst recordings ever made, an old Nonesuch disc from the early 60s. The over-prominent and disastrously out-of-tune oboes and nasal mumblings of the alto soloist alone made this a party album par excellence. Since then there has been an excellent DG Archiv recording by Stephen Preston, I believe-- never transferred to CD--that would make a good candidate for reissue.

The current recording isn't quite in that league, but it is very decent, doing maybe less well by the martial strains that begin this celebratory music than by the somber "Make them to be numbered with Thy Saints." Here, Handel mourns the dead of the Battle of Dettingen, an overwhelming British victory in the War of the Austrian Succession. When the soloists intone "We believe that Thou shalt come to be our judge," Handel uses the two trumpets alone, brillant voiced, to suggest the Day of Judgment, but it is not an exciting End of Times as in Verdi, Berlioz, et al. but a very solemn affair indeed and as moving as anything the master penned, I think. And the martial music Handel writes is wonderfully thrilling throughout.

This disc offers the added bonus of a premiere recording of the Te Deum in A, written almost twenty years before the Dettingen Te Deum. It seems like a study for the later work, especially in its now tender, now bubbly writing for the woodwinds that recalls the Handel of the operas. A highpoint of this piece is the moving "To Thee all angels cry aloud," sung compellingly by the tenor on this recording.

Concerto Polacco play well for Wolfgang Helbich, and the German choir dispatch the English text with very few bits of questionable diction. The soloists are all competent, and the bass Chris Dixon, who has some of the best music in the Dettingen Te Deum, is more than that. The main criticism that can be lodged against these performances is that the somber music is more convincing than the exciting stuff; surely it is a little subdued compared to my benchmark, the Preston recording. The sound, while good, is a bit variable, as if the engineers had placed the microphones a bit differently over the course of the long recording session.

But I think the music will win you over. The Dettingen Te Deum often reminds me of the Handel of the Messiah, written around the same time, and if Handel never reaches the magnificent levels of invention he does in the Messiah, he often comes close enough to make this a vintage work of the master.

        Album Description

Since it's premiere at the Chapel Royal in St. James' Place on November 27, 1743, Händel's Te Deum for the victory of Dettingen has been regarded as one of the greatest choral masterworks in the English language. Grandiose choruses, finely wrought vocal solos, a festive orchestration and brilliant word-painting deliver a profoundly moving and uplifting listening experience. For those unfamiliar with the Dettingen Te Deum, this is an excellent opportunity to explore the work's many treasures for themselves. The heartbreaking simplicity “Symphony” for two clarino trumpets alone is worth the price of admission!

This piece of music, quite simply, is Handel at his best in composing for orchestra and chorus. Handel is a genius of musical flair and beauty and this is no exception.
