Like most of Bach's greatest keyboard works, the Little Organ Book was designed for teaching through example. It contains 45 tiny chorale preludes, all designed according to the same principle. There are three genuine parts. One line has the hymn tune, which serves as the basis of the prelude, and the other two execute independent figures, which provide a musical analogue to the meaning of the most important lines of the text. Most of them aren't much more than a minute long, but each is simply exquisite. Christopher Herrick plays the complete set with consummate taste, and excellently chosen registrations that keep the polyphony crystal clear. --David Hurwitz

J. S. Bach's "Little Organ Book" is among the most useful teaching tools that modern organists can access. A collection of forty-five chorale preludes, each about a minute or two in length, re-composed in his style, it offers an insight into Bach as tutor and improvisor. Each chorale is a wonderfully compact example of his style.

Christopher Herrick plays the whole set, according to a liturgical framework, with marvellous clarity. His chosen instrument, though small, is perfect for the music, which is even further heightened by his choice of registration and his sensitive touch.

The booklet describes the collection as "bewilderingly rich," and 70 minutes of it may seem too much to handle in one hearing, as each one is over almost as soon as it has begun: listening to this disc completely from beginning to end is rather like drinking a large glass of water by taking tiny sips at a time. I find it far better to play chorales in shorter sequences (one such sequence is suggested by the producers, enabling you to listen to the chorales as ordered in Bach's manuscript). Also, that there are forty-five tracks does make for a disadvantage if you are trying to select a particular chorale around the middle of the disc!

There are 45 chorale preludes in Bach's Little Organ Book. Composed for use during Protestant worship services, they are mostly short (less than two minutes). Most present a four part texture in which one of the lines is the chorale melody around which the composer weaves the other lines.

When the entire set is performed, organists usually vary and contrast the tone colors to add point and individuality to each item. Rene Saorgin chooses this approach in this digital recording from 1983. The organ at Luxeuil, France, has a pedigree dating back to 1617. Occasionally you can hear clicks when the pipes in some of the oldest surviving ranks sound (those with keener ears than mine might hear the 1617 dust being disturbed). The ranks of 16 foot pipes have a particularly bright and robust tone. The acoustic is warm and airy, and the action of the bellows is entirely silent.

The masterpiece here is No 24, O Mensch, bewein dein Sunde gross; indeed, the French organ authority C.M. Widor called it "the greatest instrumental piece ever composed". Perhaps, like me, you feel a clutch at the heart at that point (4 minutes 30 seconds here) when after a long ascent the music suddenly drops into a frightening abyss before regaining balance to reach the end.

Little Gems hidden among Bach's Great Monuments.......2006-05-24

'Orgelbuchlein'or 46 chorale preludes by Johann Sebastian Bach may seem like an insignificant work tucked in between Back's great masses, cantatas, concertos, and fugues. That is, until you perk up at the beginning of a Sunday service to discover your visiting organist is opening her service prelude with one of Bach's little preludes. You suddenly forget all the mediocre introductory music from weeks past and delight in the chords from that truly greatest of all composers.

While I am suddenly inspired to hear more different versions of this collection, Simon Preston's rendition on a famous Dutch cathedral organ is more than enough to assure me that these works are easily as interesting, albeit quite short, when compared to more famous pieces. And, it is still a thrill to find things from Bach which are quite within the skills of a single organist in a small church with a decent organ.

Some of Bach's Best.......2004-11-06

This is Volume Seven in Kevin Bowyers Bach Organ Works series of

recordings for Nimbus Records. It is a complete performance of

Bach's "Orgelbuchlein" or Little Organ Book. This recording

features not only Bowyers excellent performances of the chorale

preludes , but the Det Fynske Kammerkor under Alice Joensen sing

the chorales brilliantly too. The Orgelbuchlein was an unfinished

project of Bachs he was going to compose chorale preludes for the

entire liturgical church year. Unfortunatly he only made it from

Advent to Easter. At Fourty-Five chorale preludes it is still

quite an accomplishment. Mr Bowyer always uses good taste in his

choices for organ registers and the programs of his Bach

recordings are always well thought out. As I said this is Volume

Seven of the series I think there will be total of Seventeen

Volumes with a total of 29 CDs which looks to be one of the most

complete sets of Bach organ works on the market. Each one of the

volumes in the set can easily be recommended. The Nimbus sound is

up to their usual standards, always very good. One of the best

parts of The Orgelbuchlein is that you can a lot of good Bach in

a little package.

This is the 4th recording of the Orgel Buchlein in my possesion. The only downside is the booklet is so big the corners are messed up because the booklet is in 4 LANGUAGES!! German, English, French, and even Spanish! It is also very detailed. This is a good recording of some of the best chorale preludes by Bach. The organ is an early Barouque organ featuring stops such as a 16' Bazuin. Some of the peices were played a bit quickly, and others were rather slow. If you are looking for the Orgelbuchlein, I suggest you buy the Haenssler edition!
