The decade between 1970 and 1980 saw a tremendous burgeoning of historically informed performance practice in the United States and Europe. Period-music ensembles appeared up all around the world to perform early music, especially from the baroque, on authentic instruments or reproductions. This was an exhilarating time, captured on record by the now-defunct SEON label. Sony Classical is now reissuing a series of SEON recordings, including this one. They immortalize many of the pioneers of the movement--for example the bassoonist Milan Turkovic, the recorder and transverse flute virtuoso Frans Bruggen, and the keyboard master Gustave Leonhardt. The performances on this disc are heartfelt and touching. There is an ease and confidence about them that warms to the ear. --Gwendolyn Freed
