The best performance of Maxim.......2007-02-25

The Golden Mountains is always a delight, but what really sets this disc apart is the presentation of the Maxim Trilogy. Jurowski and the Berlin Radio Orchestra never disappoint, and the addition of the rowdy and rarely-recorded prologue completes one of Shostakovich's more light-hearted ventures into film music. While Mnatsakanov's presentation with the Belarus RTV Symphony Orchestra on the Citadel Label is nearly as enjoyable (though not as extensive), it lacks the energy on this disc and, as with all of the Mnatsakanov recordings, lacks the crisp sound one can count on in the Capriccio series.
