Album Details

Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars not enough Galway.......2003-10-02

There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Trendy Music for all ages.......2000-11-14

Perfect! Great tunes! I loved it and highly recommend it! A nice surprise to music lovers of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative, perfectly performed - watch out Led Zeppelin!.......1999-07-27

If you are a rock and roll fan, this collection of classic rock and roll, arranged for string quartet by Juilliard-trained musicians, will make a classical music lover out of you. If you are a classical music fan, the arrangements and musicality will make you appreciate the complexities of contemporary and classic rock. Every song contains nuances and influences of the greatest composers (Vivaldi in "Scarborough Fair", Bartok in "Satisfaction", George Harrison in "Friends", Copeland in "Blackbird"). The arrangements, especially in "Sympathy" and "Stairway", are faithful to the originals. The "Who" material ("Who Are You"/See Me, Feel Me - Pinball Wizard") is energetic and makes you remember how great "Tommy" was. All in all, the CD is great to listen to if you are looking for a change of pace, and it's even better when you take time to really listen to the music and the arrangements. Highly Recommended for any connoisseur of music.

Album Description

Leonardo - The Absolute Man is a reasoned, selective re-telling of the life of a great man, Leonardo da Vinci, the ultimate Renaissance man. It has been in the works for years, originating as the ultimate artistic dream of Magna Carta label head Peter Morticelli, who then placed the intellectual blueprints in the hands of Trent Gardner who commenced to create what is by far, the most complex, grand and magnificently sweeping collaboration the label has ever attempted.

Leonardo sounds like no other progressive rock construct you have ever heard. It is a mix of cinematic progressive rock, symphonic rock, progressive pop and progressive metal, graced and articulated by true classical music and the theatrical scope of state-of -the-art soundtrack or dramatic stage music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My Il Divino.......2005-12-16

This is the story that has not been told. It was sorely needed. This excellent musical event gives tangible woof and weft to the life that was Leonardo's. Visari didn't capture this.

Anyone who rates this piece poorly might want to recalibrate their listening habits. This is rare. In fact, I have purchased copies to send to other artists and musicians.

I guess I relate to this more because circumstantially, Leonardo and I have some things in common. Well done.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative musical portrait.......2005-04-11

Along with J.S. Bach and Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci stands as one of my eternal heroes, with da Vinci perhaps the greatest of the three. Therefore, any musical endeavor that undertakes to capture his brilliance is one that I must find myself drawn to, with a critical but understanding eye, given the magnificence that the music would have to achieve in order to do the great Master justice.

From the first moments of Leonardo - The Absolute Man, I could tell that this was going to be an excellent attempt at accurately representing Il Divino in musical terms. Being one of those rare people who actually enjoyed both of Explorers Club's CDs, I could really get into the sound of this album. The instrumental writing and playing is exciting and brilliant. It does manage to reflect different facets of Leonardo himself, at times precise and complex, but deeply pensive and emotional at others.

As far as casting goes, I was fairly happy, I would say. The singing talent is, of course, virtually unmatched on any album; even Arjen Lucassen's projects don't manage to assemble a more talent-filled list. LaBrie especially shines for me, since I'm more familiar with him than any of the others, though I also like Mike Baker's singing on this album. At first, Lisa Bouchelle didn't seem quite right as Mona Lisa, but I grew accustomed to her, and having read an interview she gave on Highwire-Daze, I respect what she does for the character. And what can I say, if this were ever live, I wouldn't mind seeing her onstage ;-). I have no qualms with any of the other choices.

Ultimately, I would say that this is a very well-made album, and one that takes an interestingly personal, if slightly fanciful, look at da Vinci. Though there isn't enough time to paint him as the Homo universalis that he surely was, the 66 minutes we do get are as true to him in spirit as one could hope for. And while it would be presumptuous of me to say he'd have been proud, I think he would have appreciated it, and I can't imagine any other current band doing anything half as worthy to bear his name.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2004-01-18

It's fantastic. Especially Dream Theater's James LaBrie's voice on "Shaping the Invisible". One of the best voices today! The duets "First Commission" and "This Time, This Way" are incredible. Gardner's songwriting talent is indubitable. Prog and Magna Carta at their best. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Absolute Train Wreck!.......2003-12-23

Okay, perhaps it's not as horrible as Trent Gardner's other recent project, Explorers Club "Raising the Mammoth." But I really should have learned my lesson with this guy after the halfway-decent "Age of Impact" (the first Explorers Club album).

Gardner has no ear for melody! ZERO! Here we get more of his awkward writing with good singers struggling mightily to salvage it. And as another reviewer pointed out - the sound is awful!

With all of the top-notch progressive rock being put out today, there is no excuse for something this inferior. I have to believe that all of the 5-star reviews here are written by Gardner's friends and family. Trent, please, go back to law school or whatever it was that you were doing before you decided to become a musician!

3 out of 5 stars decent.......2003-06-18

There are a few decent tracks on here but alot of wish wash as well. Most of the songs are unstructured and lyricaly challenged. A few of the duets are excellent but dont make up for the mediocrity leading up to them. I really wanted to love this cd but find myself cringing if I try to listen through the whole thing.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Verismo German style..........2003-09-14

I first listened to this opera after listening to a spate of works by Zemlinsky, Szymanowski, and early Schoenberg. In that context, Max von Schillings' music seemed to me somewhat artless. But I recently sat down and listened through again, libretto in hand, and I took away more appreciation for this little known figure of early twentieth century music.

According to the notes, Schillings was part of Richard Strauss's circle, and produced a trio of very Wagnerian operas earlier in his career. "Mona Lisa" was his final and most popular effort. But stylistically it breaks away from a strictly Wagnerian mode, and dabbles in the language of Italian verismo. The story, too, fits the veristic model in it's direct, realistic, and slightly shocking handling of a love triangle ending in murder. It's given added interest by taking it's inspiration from Leonardo DaVinci's famous painting.

Schilling's opera was one of four works that appeared in a very short time with very similar subjects--Zemlinsky's "Eine Florentinische Tragodie", Schreker's "Die Gezeichneten", and Korngold's "Violanta" to which it's similarity is striking. It's true that Schillings' harmonic and orchestral sophistication isn't quite up to the level of the other three, yet he still fashions a dynamic and effective drama that charms with it's beauty and chills with it's dramatic twists and turns.

        Album Description

Andrew List composes music in many different genres including orchestral works, string quartet, vocal, choral music and opera, music for children, solo works and a variety of chamber ensembles. A resident of Boston, Massachusetts, Mr. List is a Professor of Composition and Theory at the Berklee College of Music. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, List is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music. He received his doctorate in music composition from Boston University where he studied with Bernard Rands and Nicholas Maw. Lee. T. McQuillan, a resident of Middletown, Connecticut, studied Music Education at Barrington College in Rhode Island and later received his Bachelor of Music in composition from the Hartt School of Music. Arthur Welwood is a Professor of Composition at the Berklee College of Music. Wind Sky Clouds, commissioned by jazz trumpeter Greg Hopkins, was completed in the summer of 2003. The premiere performance took place in Hartford, Connecticut on November 16, 2003, with Hopkins playing the solo trumpet and flugelhorn and Tibor Puszati conducting the Connecticut Valley Chamber Orchestra. The piece is an example of "Third Stream," a phrase first coined by composer Gunther Schuller to describe the fusion of jazz and classical styles and where the crossover from one to another in the course of the piece is blurred and often imperceptible.
