From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

More Great Fun.......2006-03-13

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

Absolute joy, and endless fun!.......2005-11-15

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

Adagio follows in the rosin-dusted footsteps of The Impressionists, A Different Mozart, and A Different Prelude. As with those releases, it was produced by Dawn Atkinson and features many of the same artists. The results are as varied as the musicians. Violinist Tracy Silverman cuts one of his patented echo-delayed pizzicato violin arrangements of a Bach arioso, while Patrick O'Hearn drapes a somber keyboard shroud around the Adagio from Rodrigo's Fantasy for a Gentleman. Jeff Johnson and Brian Dunning find the Celtic air in the Adagio from Handel's Sonata in G, while Philip Aaberg discovers infinity between the notes of Barber's ubiquitous Adagio for Strings. He stretches the melody across his piano in finely drawn lines, subtlety filled out with synthesizer undertones. Subtlety is a casualty on Philipe Saisse's bongos, bells, and synth arrangement of Bach's Air on a G String. It's also sacrificed in a corny confection of Handel's Sarabande by Paul Schwartz. His ham-fisted electronic keyboards would've sounded dated even before Switched-On Bach. But Adagio features plenty of musicians who are willing to surrender themselves to their elegiac themes, including guitarist Steve Erquiaga, Mike Marshall, and Edgar Meyers. --John Diliberto

Simply Gorgeous !.......2003-10-05

This is the first Windham Hill compilation I've purchased in a long, long time, and I am thrilled with the music.
The artistry is stunning, the artists bring themselves to the music while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the original piece.
My favorite is Grieg's Nocturne, arranged and performed by Steve Erquiaga. I have been in love with his music from the moment
I heard his CD "Cafe Paradiso" (Imaginary road Records). It is absolutely stunning!
When I saw that he was on "Adagio" I went for it. I'm so happy that I did ...
Other hightlights for me are Philip Aaberg's "Adagio for Strings", Tracy Silverman's "Arioso" ..... they're all beautiful.
Thank You for this wonderful music.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Great Reference CD!.......2006-01-09

This is a great compilation, CD, along with Bride's Guide to Wedding Music Volume I, to use as a reference for some of the more popular wedding songs, such as Trumpet Voluntary, Vivaldi's Spring from the Four Seasons, Trumpet Tune and Canon, i.e. Pachelbel's Canon. All of the musicians are generally superb, and the sound quality is very good. However, this is most useful if you are playing the CD at your wedding, or using it as a reference CD to talk over with an organist, a string quartet, etc. I only gave it four stars based on practicality, not on quality. If it were just quality, I would give it five stars. I purchased this CD since I am in the process of making my own wedding CD (I am a professional, freelance violinist), and this was nice to listen to, even just as background music for dinner.

Interesting musical selections, but ..........2005-01-06

As the other reviewer noted, one doesn't have to be getting married to enjoy this CD...and the musical selections are certainly interesting, even eclectic. I have to wonder, however, who picked these out with what criteria since at least a couple of these melodies are not traditional wedding tunes. By this I mean the lovely arrangement of Michael Praetorius' "In Dulci Jubilo." In his home country of Germany, where I used to live until a couple of years ago, this is a Christmas carol, sung at Christmas Eve services throughout the land. The lyrics aren't especially suited to any sort of wedding, really. Unless you're marrying in December, I personally would steer clear of this song. And if the wedding's in June and you have European guests, don't be surprised if eyebrows are raised when this melody is played!

A Nice Wedding Compilation.......2001-07-24

This album provides you with some good reference materials on planning the music for your wedding. Many of us may sit around wondering what on earth "Tempo di Mineutto" is. Well, with this album you will wonder no more. This is a pretty good compilation of some wedding favorites set in order that they would appear in your ceremony (prelude, processional, ceremony and recessional). Even if you aren't planning a wedding, this album provides you with some really good classical music to relax by. At a good discount, this CD is a nice addition to any collection. I would recommend this disc.

simple but amazing.......2006-01-29

The guitar and vocals on this CD will blow you away. Of all of the Catholic Classics CDs, this one is my favorite - an awesome way to learn some of those more traditional songs without a voicy choir.

Surprising, but beautifully done.......2006-01-12

I really expected a more traditional arrangement with organ & choir, so I was in for a bit of a shock right off the bat. The arrangements are relatively simple with one or two voices and limited orchestration. However the effect is wonderful. The primary singer has an unusual high and clear voice, and the harmonies raise goosebumps with their beauty (all I know about music I learned from my highschool punk rock band, so you'll have to listen to the tracks above if my description is unclear).

Some of the tracks are forgettable, but the others are truly outstanding. "Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow" is wonderful, and exceeded only by "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name." The mixture of latin chant with vernacular on "For the Beauty of the Earth/Ubi Caritas" and "Go Silent Friend/In Paradisium" was tastefully done. The performers and arrangers also rescued the otherwise saccharine "How Great Thou Art" and turned it into a genuinely inspiring hymn, although they were unable to accomplish a similar feat with the thoroughly overplayed "Amazing Grace."

So many other people have beautiful renditions of Ave Maria, so the track on this CD barely registers for me. Panis Angelicus is done better on many other disks as well.

Still, if it were only "Praise God..." and "Holy God..." on this CD, it would be worth the price. Truly excellent.

This is the one to get........2003-09-08

Very beautiful and inspiring rendition of some favorite Catholic classics. The most beautiful: "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow" which fades in the middle into a chant-like revery-inducing song only to flourish again with new-found faith at the end. Second most beautiful: "Holy God, We Prise They Name," which builds in three voices towards the end, one added for each person of the Blessed Trinity. Also noteworthy: "For the Beauty of the Earth," with its mix of Latin and English transitions and blending of Gregorian chant in between verses. Good rendition of "Ave Maria" and "Simple Gifts." A lot of steel-string guitar played strong and true, but not overwhelming the beautiful voice of David Fischer. Fischer accompanies himself on the best tracks, to great effect (especially "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow").

I was looking for a recording of Londonderry Air performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra/Eugene Ormandandy. After listening to several sample clips on this CD, I ordered it. The entire CD is beautiful and relaxing. It's become one of my favorites.

Tuning aside...........2006-04-01

We can debate the merits of the tuning in 5th all day, but what's important is the music, and Quarrington's tone and his interpretation are both wonderful. This album belongs in the collection of every double bassist, certainly, and probably in the collection of every fan of string music as well.

Is just a matter of tunning?.......2004-04-19

I think that double bass technique is much more wide than a change of tunning, specially if you think that (for example)the 90% of the Elegie in D is played in ONLY ONE string. I think that other technical matters(Bow driving, fingering, vibrato)and musical matters(knowledge of Bottesini's language in relation to the instrument's possibilities) allow performers to make the audience forget about the instrument and enyoy this pure, simple and passioned music. This was what Bottesini did in his time; he could SING whith his instrument. Bottesini's playing was very close to "Belle Canto Italiano", he was a lover of the opera (his mother was a soprano and he was a close friend of Giusseppe Verdi). In my opinion Rinat Ibragimov is who is closest to this human, warm, passioned voice. I think that we must listen to all versions of Bottesini's works and discuse about these matters. Thanks.

Buy this CD.......2004-02-17

I am baffled at the conclusions of an earlier reviewer, for reasons of both historical innacuracy as musical ignorance. It is, first of all, a relatively modern idea that the bass must be tuned solely in fourths. The instrument, a descendent of the extinct "bass violion" (not the violone as is commonly misconcieved) was originally tuned in fifths, and players such as Dragonetti often experimented with their tunings. Regardless, this is still a bass--by tuning in fifths Quarrington has created such a sound more beautiful than Karr, Badila, or Levinson (ugh) could ever achieve. Secondly, music is not history, and therefore is not bound by "historical correctness." How can progress (like the music Joel has published here) ever be made without altering precendents? Joel often uses the solo tuning key (the key Bottesini intended)anyway--it is actually "incorrect" to play the music in orchestra tuning, if such a distintion must be made.

My point is that this is the new level of bass playing. Buy this cd.

bottesini is better than mozart.......2003-03-06

I'M Spanish and i don't speak very well english. I think bottesini is the best composer in the world. In this CD Joel Quarrington is fantastic, but Andrew is normal. This songs "expresan"(in Spanish) very much things. The first time I listen this CD I don't like it very much, but now I'm amazed. I play the double bass, and "insisto" Joel Quarrington is fantastic. I'm ungry because doesn't exist the Vol 2 of Bottesini music.

Virtuosic however flawed.......2002-07-07

Taking nothing away from Joel, this CD is technically as close to perfection as one could wish for. His playing has a warm appealing tone.

However, it's not a TRUE bass sound is it?, after all, he plays on an instrument tuned in 5ths, not 4ths, and this results in the need to alter the key of the music - meaning it isn't historically correct.

Virtuoso bassists such as Badila, Levinson and the great Gary Karr play these pieces much more convincingly, and much more musically, and although they may not appear on the cheap labels, they are a worthwile find.

Great perfomances - cheap price.......2004-12-06

This is another one of those Philips concept albums where they cobble together performances from their catalogue and then package them under some corny title to attract the general public who might not have much knowledge or interest in classical music.

Good news for those of use who are knowledgeable and interested in classical is that this is a CD of all Arthur Grumiaux performances at a great discount price! Grumiaux is one of my favorite performers, and Philips uses his performances in a variety of concept albums, one other worth checking out is "Mozart for Coffee."

All of these songs and performances on this CD are excellent, and the sound quality is wonderful. Some of the selections fall more on the "pop" side of classical music, but with Grumiaux they are rendered wonderfully.

Instead of shelling out full price for a second rate violinst (hear that, Andre Rieu fans?), why not pay half price for a first-rate violinist?

A compser who deserves to better known in Europe.......2006-03-15

Howard Hanson (1896-1981) is one of the most popular composers of the 20th Century in the USA. He rejected the serialism and atonalism of his time and continuted writing warm, romantic, music long after it ceased to be fashionable among 'serious' composers, drawing strongly on his Nordic roots.

Sadly, he has never really established a reputation on this side of the Atlantic. If this fantastic twofer CD gets more of airing though, that could all change.

If people know anything by Hanson, it's most likely to be the Second Movement of the Second Symphony, which was used as the theme for the film Alien. The Second Symphony is his most popular piece with American audiences and with it's warm, rich, harmonies and many delightful passages, especially on horns, it's not hard to see why.

Three other symphonies are in this collection of which the outstanding one is the semi-choral Seventh, "A Sea Symphony".

A number of other pieces fill the CD, with the pick of the bunch being the deeply moving and clearly personal Elegy for Hanson's friend Serge Koussevitzky. Koussevitzky championed Hansons' music as chief conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone who likes late-romantic music (think of a warmer Sibelius or a mellower Mahler) or is interested in the music of the USA. I also hope that Hanson will start to get his due recognition in the concert halls of this continent

An Essential American Classic.......2002-05-26

Howard Hanson (1897-1981) was one of the most significant American composers of his generation. Unfortunately, he has been largely forgotten today as a result of the romantic style of his earlier music, and his refusal to adopt a more modern musical style in his later works. He has been called the American version of Rachmaninoff.

This excellent double-cd brings together some of Hanson's most loved symphonic works. The first: the Second Symphony ("Romantic") is perhaps his best-known work. But more importantly are some of the later works, better represented by the haunting Elegy (in memory of Koussevitsky), and the Fourth and Sixth Symphonies. The Fourth Symphony ("Requiem") is an incredible work, and the Sixth a tour-de-force that shows how in his later work Hanson had gone beyond neo-romanticism to forge a more modern style uniquely his own.

At his best, Hanson's music is forceful, profound, deeply human and vulnerable. If you are at all interested in Twentieth Century American symphonic works, you really must have this wonderful set from Delos. These are essential American classics, must have music. Even if your tastes are more for the avant garde stuff, you will still admire the depth of this composer's music.

I hadn't previously heard any of Hanson's music except for the "Romantic", but on the basis of that symphony I bought this double CD set. I'm glad I did! The music is wonderful and is brilliantly played and the "Romantic" is as arresting as ever. I can highly recommend this as an introduction to Hanson's music for anyone who likes classical music. It's from the 20th century, but it's as lovely and stirring as Schumann and Brahms!
