This disc must be intended for insomniacs; it has that three-in-the-morning feel. The single movements featured are for the most part well performed. And some are decidedly off the beaten track, like Wojciech Kilar's Death and the Maiden (no relation to Schubert's) from the soundtrack to the movie, Paulina's Secret. And we also get English horn player Thomas Stacy doing the solo from the slow movement of Dvorák's New World Symphony with the New York Philharmonic. Also, there is violinist Tasmin Little and the BBC Symphony in a beautiful, dewy performance of The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams. -- Gwendolyn Freed

Haunting, Atmospheric, and Beautiful.......2006-06-15

Every time I find myself awake past midnight, I listen to this CD. It does indeed have that "three-in-the-morning feel". I'm not a classical music buff but every piece on Night Tracks is well-chosen and played beautifully. No matter I stressed out I may feel, this CD never fails to relax me and fill me with peace and tranquility --- I can't recommend it highly enough. The album cover is striking and moody.

Not your ordinary tonal bubble bath ..........2005-10-01

I love this recording for its thought-provoking selections. I wouldn't suggest reading while you listen, you'll get too distracted. Maybe a long soak in the bath and a nice glass of wine. It's great for thinking things over. If I have a criticism, it's the odd themes from Dvorak, Copland, Vaughn Williams and Verdi. Playing just a taste of a theme from something doesn't satisfy. But the Bach, Kilar, Espere and the rest are wonderful.

The Best overall stress reducing music cd ever!.......2005-01-17

This is by far one of my favorite cd's to listen to at the end of a long day. Especially in the winter months curled up by a fire and a good book.

Heinrich Schütz published two volumes of Kleine geistliche Konzerte ("Little Sacred Concertos") during the 1630s. They're certainly small in scale compared to the lavish Psalm settings in the composer's Psalmen Davids; these "concertos" are mostly solos, duets, and trios, with no instruments but keyboard or lute. (The Thirty Years War wrecked the economy of central Europe, and the resources for grander church music weren't available--and neither, most likely, was the inclination to perform it.) Yet this is some of the sweetest, most tender music Schütz ever wrote. For example, the way in which the melodic lines in the duos and trios wrap themselves around each other, come apart briefly, and rejoin is magical; the solo tenor in "O misericordissime Jesu" adores the name of Jesus with as much passion as anything in Monteverdi. Weser-Renaissance, a German ensemble that deserves to be much better known, gives us all the Konzerte--on three discs for the price of two, no less--in exemplary performances with careful attention to the text that was so important to Schütz. The standard of singing is generally high, but sopranos Susanne Rydén and Nele Gramß have such beautifully pure tone and musical rapport that they're surely first among equals here. --Matthew Westphal

I bought this recording primarily for it's documentary value. Complete recordings of the Kleine geistiche Konzerte are not encountered every day, and despite knowing almost nothing of the performers, I looked forward to owning this three CD set. Much to my surprise, the performances were every bit as exciting as the recording feat is impressive. These are not sterile, academic readings but rather fully formed and moving performances of this exquisite music. The vocal style is occasionally more "modern" than one expects in early music, but I welcome the full-throated singing which is always attentive to the passion of the texts. An excellent example is the duet "Habe deine Lust an dem Herrn" by sopranos Susanne Ryden and Nele Gramss, which is one of the real highlights of this set. Alongside the many familiar favorites are many lesser known gems. Many thanks to Manfred Cordes and Wesen-Remaissance Bremen for 195+ minutes of pure pleasure.
