Hailing from the Reyes and Baliardo Gypsy families, this ensemble from the south of France has been playing "rumba flamenca" since the late 1980s. With this 1995 compilation, the songwriting talent and virtuosity this unique group possesses were gathered together in one comprehensive CD. Notable inclusions are the anthemic hit "Bamboleo," from their debut, Gipsy Kings; the slowly emotive "Trista Pena" the Italian cover "Volaré," from Mosaïque; and assorted live cuts that wonderfully capture the wild energy these players spark onstage. In short, the Gipsy Kings are a celebratory bunch who know how to rock with a rhapsody of acoustic guitars, passionate vocals, and walls of congas, timbales, cabasas, and bongos. Check this caravan out. --Karen Karleski

if you love living, you will love this.......2007-05-21
I guess to each his own, but this disc is breathtaking, soothing, emotional, fun, spicy, and many other thing all in one. My daughter loves their music as does everone I know. It is great for every age. I would rate this even more, if possible. Full of soul!!
The best accoustic band in the world.......2007-03-17
Beautifull rythms, I like this the best because of viento del arena.
Disappointed .......2007-03-16
If this is the "Best" then I definately don't want to buy anymore.
bad mistake, it sits buried, never to be played again.......2007-02-27
I was expecting something along the lines of Strunz and Farah, after hearing only one tune on the radio. What a disappointment! There is that one song, it is clearly different from the rest of the tracks. And thankfully, it contains no Kings vocals, which are as grating on the ears as pigs in heat! Of course, there are some reveiwers, as reflected by all the stars following this album around, who relish this stuff.
If you are new to these guys, beware! Taste the sauce first on someone else's dime before you buy.
Impossible to listen to and sit still !!.......2007-02-26
I've been listening to this CD for the past 10 years and it never loses its appeal. The energy, the raw/rough emotion in the voices, the fabulous rhythms, the intricate guitar work - all of them combine to make music that makes you want to move every part of your body. If you want to feel upbeat or energized while you drive, I suggest you play this at top volume in the car (hopefully with the windows closed); reserve the dancing until your feet are on the ground again. Just saw the Gipsy Kings in concert last night at Radio City and was lucky enough to hear them play 3 or 4 songs from this CD - the ENTIRE audience was on its feet, dancing, singing along and roaring with approval.

There's very little doubt that the Gipsy Kings are good at what they do--they've become the brand name in Sevillana, the pop-oriented flamenco style. Since 1989, when the single "Bamboleo" and their Gipsy Kings album broke through and went gold in the United States, they've found a willing audience in America for their style, which, while flashy, doesn't demand a great deal of the listener, unlike more hardcore versions of flamenco. This double set collects 37 of their biggest tracks, including a version of the Eagles' "Hotel California," into one package guaranteed to satisfy fans of their precise, jubilant playing. And there's no denying they have the power to move people with their singing and fretwork, making this a must for those who want to experience all the familiar material in one sitting. Like the band themselves, the record is an unqualified success as a greatest hits package. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
This is my second copy!.......2007-01-10
This double CD by the Gipsy Kings is one of my all-time favorites! I now have 2 copies of this CD and I introduce the Gipsy Kings to as many people as I possibly can. Everytime "Volare" plays, I feel like dancing! Just really great, infectious, "feel-good" music! You do not have to understand Spanish to enjoy!
I'm dancing as I write this!!!.......2006-07-25
While I am not a music connoisseur, I can tell you that my whole family LOVES this album. From my 34 yr. old husband right down to our 1 yr. old son and all others in between. You will not be disappointed! This is our favorite album of the summer and we try hard to be flamenco dancers while singing along and cleaning the house-it's quite a show, I assure you...
Rumba Flamenca I love!.......2006-04-04
I must say that the Gypsy Kings are simply musical geniuses. Every song of theirs is a "Hit" in itself. The history of how they came together is also very fascinating. I grew up listening to these guys thanks to my dad. The first time I heard the Gypsy Kings was in 1991 (this is when I didn't even know who they were!). When sitting in the car, he would pop his cassette in the tape player and all of a sudden, this music would put me in a trance. I finally found out who they were in 96' and I was glad that I did. Bem, Bem Maria; Tu Quieres Volver, and El Verano are my all time favorites. I could listen to these 3 songs over and over and never get tired of it. It's not only the strong rhythm that they bring in their music, but its also the hard melody they play out in all of their studio recordings. For anyone who is reading this and is not familiar with the Gypsy Kings, I suggest you buy an album from them. I recommend "Volare! - The Very Best Of The Gipsy..." Since it has all their greatest hits. Once you do, you will fall in love with the sounds of Rumba Flamenca!
Great music!.......2006-03-13
I had been meaning to buy music by the Gypsy Kings for some time - having always heard mention of them. I am really glad I finally did! The collection is a great introduction to their wonderful music. It is fun and energetic - beautiful songs in spanish!
Buy it already.......2005-12-15
Whether you have all the previous albums, seen them in concert, or are just discovering this band you will love this album.
It is a must have for anyone with a little spice in their collection.
This 2 disc album brings to life the history of this group, it fills the room you play it in with love and energy, and it fills you with a taste of their inspirations.
Enjoy!

Slavic Soul Party bills itself as the "No. 1 brass band for Balkan-soul-gypsy-funk." While the competition may be a bit thin in this niche genre, there is no argument about the validity of the tag. The band, made up of members of varying backgrounds from the U.S. and Japan, introduces the brash-but-intricate horn lines of the Balkans and adds some New Orleans grit and groove to the stew. On the Brooklyn-based group's third album, one can't help but marvel at the ensemble playing of knotty horn lines on tunes by leader Matt Moran (the percolating "Ruchenista!" stands out) or Slavic traditionals like the sadly romantic "Djelem Djelem," which features guest vocalist Eva Salina Primack. Those ready to party need look no further than the uproarious "Vrainje" or the title track. No matter which direction the nine-piece band goes, it easily takes the listener along for the ride. --Tad Hendrickson

When I first heard about this on NPR, I immediately got a big grin. This is a fun, funky collection of tunes. I'm also a big fan of The Art of Noise, so take that into account. This isn't full of sound effects, just cool tunes with a fun beat.

Kicking off this highly unusual collection of Italian music is "L'Italiano," whose contemporary arrangement veers dangerously close to Jamaican reggae. And if "Gloria" doesn't set sail on a sea of disco lights, then the Pope doesn't live in Rome. But the emphasis on pop settings over pizza parlor fare isn't too much of a departure from the "favorites" tag considering the influence of Neapolitan ballads and operatic arias on the early days of Tin Pan Alley. Fans of Italian music will still find plenty of traditional themes and melodies here and enough soaring emotion to satisfy the soul of Verdi. For lovely Italian songs more grounded in tradition, also look to the Putumayo label's Italian Music Odyssey anthology. For gritty street-corner folk music, check out the four titles released so far in Rounder Records' Italian Treasury series. --Bob Tarte
Customer Reviews:
Simply... All the Best From Italy!.......2007-07-07
This compilation is a list of popular music that are indeed, the best from Italy. You have to realize that these songs/pieces are not Italian-American songs that many may assume; i.e. this is not a Ratpack CD. Instead, it is a CD compiled with numerous Italian folk songs in which I grew up listening. My Nonna (Grandma) is from Italy (Tuscany)and when I burned her a copy, she melted! She knew all of the tracks and loved how it took her back to her days in Lucca. She played the CD whenever she had free time up until her death.
A lot of the ratings on this page bash the CD because it has a relatively new recording style and was scored with modern day synthesizers and beat samplers. However, folk music is meant to be the sound from a particular region or culture. This CD encapsulates this sound in a modern form. Simply put, many folk songs from yesteryear were never ever recorded due to the given limitations. Furthermore, when searching the titles that are on the CD, I have only come up with this CD, which means that nobody else out there has really taken the time to capture the sound of Italy and record it. This is as good as it gets in the interim; and if people from Italy even know the tunes, what more can you ask for?
For those that criticized Canada and said "Where does it get off publishing Euro-Italian compilations, Canada actually has a strong Italian presence in Quebec and in Toronto (rightfully so since it is right above New York)!
Johnny Toscani
Chicago
Canned, overprocessed "music".......2007-04-13
I bought this CD because I liked the cover and I am getting married next year and thought I could use it for my wedding. The romantic photo sucked me in, but this is one of the worst CD collections of Italian music I have ever heard. I can imagine it was produced in a garage on a midi, with canned tracks. There is nothing original or real about this CD. I do not recommend.
Italian Music made in Canada?.......2007-03-18
Italian music from St. Laurent, Quebec Canada? I guess that is what one would expect. Sounds like a bunch of French-Canadian college students trying to audition in a faux-Italian bar. It is pretty bad. I don't know how they get "Gloria" as an Italian favorite. If you want Italian cafe music, don't buy this one. A waste of money
Buy it only if you like nasely Pop Italian sounds.......2007-02-25
My husband and I buy alot of Italian music, our favorite. This CD, as one of the reviewers said, is a series of canned pop music from Italy. We fell for the romantic cover of Venice, I guess. We thought we were getting more romantic sounds, but there was the same "pop" sound all the way through the album. And the male vocals with his nasel sounds really annoyed us. The cover and description leads you to believe you get something you don't. The best word I can use to describe it is cheesy.
Beautiful music, voice and instruments,.......2006-10-23
I borrowed these CD's from the library and did not expect too much from it. But it surprised me that the singers are excellent. These songs "Ti amo" "O sole mio" "Funiculi Funicula" and "Arrivederci Roma" are familiar for the people from Taiwan, but I discovered many wonderful Italia songs from these two CD's. CD 1 is my favoriate.

It's ironic that electronica's forefathers include two German bands whom, at least on the surface, were polar opposites. On the one hand, there was Can--shaggy, Stockhausen-trained advocates of trance improvisation--and on the other, Kraftwerk: clean-cut control freaks and masters of the pristine machine groove. Yet, even at their most robotic, Kraftwerk manages to locate the soul of the machine, as they demonstrate throughout this 1977 outing. Hell, the mannequin manifesto "Showroom Dummies" alone is worth the price of admission. For a band so closely tied to technology, it's a testament to Ralf and Florain that their music continues to sound fresh more than two decades down the autobahn. --Bill Forman
Customer Reviews:
Slightly less repetitious and dull as it is edgy and seductive.......2007-04-25
3 1/2
It's good, quite good for Kraftwerk's body of werk, of course appreciated infinitely more in it's proper context, though I always felt these rightful legends were more producers then artists. These grandfathers of electronic music indeed pioneered the euro-techno-minimalist template to an astounding degree, though they seemed, as is with many innovative musical groups, to often eclipse substance with style. What some consider their finest disc, certainly may be a solid piece of the coldly melodic kraftmenship fans have come to expect, but usually remains pretentiously detached for an unfamiliar crowd. Most of a short run time is spent on the purposely restrictive but calculatedly executed beats, melodies and vocals in an enticing enough way that makes the album a worthy visit now and again, but hardly merits frenzied devotion.
Proto-electronica.......2007-04-16
The seminal work that influenced all of the pop-rock music of the 80's, and the ambient music movement of the 90's and beyond. An important milestone in electronic music.
Really good.......2007-03-24
Kraftwerk is a good ensemble. I say ensemble for lack of a better term. Anyway, this album is great. Start to finish good. One must listen the whole way through without skipping around to truly appreciate how good it is. Their other albums, particularly man machine and computer world, while both excellent can get boring. But in this case, you don't have to worry. I haven't gotten bored yet, and even after the glamor of the whole object has been lost, I can still return to individual tracks for pure joy. Just lie down on the floor, throw it on, and relax. Cool.
Another one to add to your collection........2007-02-22
Not all Kraftwerk albums are worthy of purchase, but this one is. Careful when a CD has multiple songs with same title. That usually means the creativity has given way to duplication. Not here. So, this should be added to your colletion.
Through a Glass Electronically.......2007-01-19
I've listened to quite a few Kraftwerk albums since college friends introduced me to this talented and innovative group back in the early '90's, but somehow I'd missed out on "Trans-Europe Express" until this last Christmas. This is really excellent electronic music, possibly one of Kraftwerk's best efforts. Sometimes it seems that their sense of musicality and melody and such gets just a bit swamped by their fascination with mechanical and computerized sound, and sometimes this makes some of their pieces seem to drag just a bit on the verge of monotony--never completely, but a tad too close for comfort. They have deftly dodged this minor glitch in this album, though, even with the wonderfully harsh, mechanistic "Metal on Metal" to say nothing of the beautifully transcendental "Endless Endless" or the disturbingly surreal "Hall of Mirrors." On a humorous note, "Showroom Dummies" inevitably evoked for me the classic Doctor Who villains known as the Autons (aggressively colonizing beings who inhabit plastic mannequins and attack earth, starting with our shopping malls) but I suspect this was unintentional on Kraftwerk's part. In any case, I think this may well be the most approachable album for those newly wishing to explore Kraftwerk's work, but old explorers like myself will undoubtedly enjoy it as well.

Songs To Remember.......2007-04-05
I have the original LP. I got in when I was in french immersion school in MD back in the late 70's. I am currently teaching my children french and am so glad to see this now comes on CD. I remember every song that I sang back in elemtary and the words of the singers so clear and the voices are such a delight to hear. This album brings back so many good memories. I cannot wait to share these songs wiith my children.
Delightful!.......2007-02-13
Our three boys (6y, 4y, and 2y) *love* this cd! We listen to it almost every day. The music is cheerful and gentle and the singers are pleasant to listen to.
Best Silly Songs for Tots.......2006-05-30
These songs are universally appealing to the 2 - 6 y.o. age group to whom I teach French. The arrangements are clear, sparkling, and very entertaining. The gregarious spirit of the album draws kids into repeating and singing along with little concern for content. As they become more interested and start asking questions, parents can find lyrics, and in some cases history, of these classic songs by entering titles into an international search engine.
Simply wonderful.......2005-11-03
I am so glad I bought this and will buy it as gifts for others. The musical arrangements are lovely (to mother, young child, and baby) and Lucienne Vernay has such a beautiful, clean and simple voice. What a delight to listen to.
Wish there were more like this for kids!.......2004-05-28
I thought the songs/tunes were very nice but couldn't understand most of the lyrics even though I took years of French in college and high school. My daughter (6) doesn't seem to care. Wish I could find more bilingual songs -- I highly recommend Global Village Kids Sing and Learn CD -- they have nursery rhymes in French and English. Since the words are familiar to my daughter, she can pick up the French meaning. Does anyone know of any more bilingual music like that?

Oktoberfest is the Best.......2007-01-09
Was lucky enough to go to Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany during 2006 and wanted to bring a little piece of Oktoberfest (Music) home with me.
Could not find what I was looking for in Germany so I came home and ordered the Oktoberfest music from Amazon.
Great.

This sprawling three-records-on-two-CDs set offers a healthy cross-section of material and finds the band honing even further its blend of musical languages. There are country-inflected boogies, blues rave-ups, passionate ballads, and, of course, the extended, adventurous jams that made them famous. Many of the Dead's best-loved tunes made their initial vinyl appearances here, including "He's Gone," "Jack Straw," "Brown-Eyed Women," "Ramble on Rose," and "Tennessee Jed"--most of which reveal a heavy country influence, especially in Robert Hunter's lyrics. In addition to introducing these new songs, Europe '72 also showcases brilliantly fine-tuned versions of "Truckin'" (complete with a lengthy "Epilogue") and "China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider," which became the first of the band's many magical song combinations. --Marc Greilsamer

greatest album ever by these guys!

Dead invade Europe.......2007-04-23
Undoubtfully one of greatest Grateful Dead records, "Europe 72" gives us a general view on the European leg of 1972 tour. The group sound was changing and by then it was balanced between the jams of the late sixties and the country/folk excursions of "Workingman's Dead" and "American Beauty". Another cause for the change in sound was the addition of Keith Godchaux on beautiful acoustic piano, since Pigpen was not in good shape to handle the keyboards (and in fact, this was his last tour with the Dead before his death in 1973). Anyway, Ronald "Pigpen" McKernan gives it all, and there are still some really nice organ touches in some numbers, plus his powerful vocal renditions (even though his voice was notably weaker). As for the rest of the band, they were at their very best. Kreutzman was playing better than ever, Lesh was as outstanding as always, Weir had taken a lot more prominence on stage with his own songs, and Garcia, well, he was Jerry Garcia and that seems to be enough.
This album is not entirely live, we should add. Most of the vocals were overdubbed on studio. It should be pointed out that it was possibly done because most of the material was new and the Dead surely wanted to have neat and always-in-tune vocal tracks for the record where these songs were going to be featured for the very first time. Among these new compositions there are real Garcia-Hunter gems (Ramble On Rose, He's Gone, Brown-Eyed Women) and some really interesting Weir works (Jack Straw, One More Saturday Night), plus Pigpen's "Mr.Charlie". Hunter wanted the Dead to record some of these songs on a studio album which was going to be called "Rambling Rose", but the tour and the rehearsal sessions with new-comer Godchaux didn't allow time to do so.
This expanded edition provides a long "Good Lovin'" jam and "Two Souls In Communion", maybe the best Pigpen composition ever, which was left out of the original album only God knows why.
So, folks, this is top Dead. Classics, new material, atonal abstract instrumental jams, etc. etc.
(Note: for raw, not-overdubbed material from this tour, look for "Hundred Year Hall", "Rocking the Rhein" or "Steeping Out With The Grateful Dead England '72". While listening, you will find they sounded even better without any overdubs).
Perhaps the best intro to the Dead for the uninitiated: superb.......2007-02-05
This is an enduring classic, for one simple reason: the playing and the material are uniformly superb. It has its detractors, who are often critical of the fact that vocal tracks were overdubbed in the studio, but this merely points out that what Deadheads tend to value is not necessarily what ordinary music-lovers value. In the case of the Dead, whose live vocals were extremely inconsistent and often painfully unprofessional, the overdubbing is, in my opinion, a definite advantage. Those who prefer to hear music played in tune will, I'm sure, agree with my assessment. Now that we've got that out of the way, the playing is very tight-- everyone is consistently firing on all cylinders. The material in many cases may be seen as drawing from the same inspirational well that is evident in The Band's music-- described by one writer
as an "evocation of a semi-mythological rural America" -- and represents some of the best of the material penned by Garcia and lyricist Robert Hunter. Deadhead's seemingly obliviousness to the brilliance of Bob Weir's rhythm guitar playing is very puzzling. He was perhaps at his absolute peak when this was recorded, and his playing is astoundingly good. Likewise, Deadheads tend to display what to my ears is an entirely unfounded dislike for Keith Godchaux's piano playing, which covers many different styles here with authority, authenticity, and inventiveness. The way he weaves his parts around the bass, organ, and two guitars is fantastic, adding beautiful harmonic colors and rhythmic drive. And the sound of acoustic piano was just what this material called for. The bass playing and drumming are terrific-- to my ears, the band always sounded a bit heavy-handed and leaden-footed with two drummers. Kreutzman is all the drummer they ever needed and proves it here, in spades. Garcia tends to play many shorter solos rather than extended ones, but makes every note count. His playing throughout is masterful, achingly lyrical and inventive. Lesh, perhaps the most consistent bandmember, displays his usual virtuosity, like a giant anaconda, slithering along-- displaying fluidity and pinpoint accuracy at the same time. In short, if you love good music you can't lose with this one.
Could be better.......2006-12-29
It's a good cd; but feel deceived as title is Europe '72 I expected it to be a "live " cd, and found out it was recorded in a S.F. warehouse!!
The Best Dead......still.......2006-12-13
I remember when this album was issued....everyone had it. You couldn't get away from it if you tried. In my personal opinion (this coming from a definate NON-dead head) I believe this to be their very best live album. The band is tight, the harmonies pretty glorious, the late Pigpen still alive and along for the ride, the then recent addition of Keith Godchaux adding serious musicianship to the band (his wifes' off key wailing kept to a minimum on this album..bonus days), drummer Bill Kreutzmann alone without Mickey Hart and playing his a** off.....it's all pretty much here on this album.
Hardcore fans will probably disagree with me, but I think this is an essential album by the band. The expanded version just gives more of a perfect thing..........buy this if you don't already have it.

Very Relaxing.......2007-04-03
I love this CD! I listen to it every time my world feels like it's about to spin out of control because I have too much to do and not enough time to do it. Very calming and serene. My 12 year old daughter now knows who Mozart is and can recognize his music on the radio!
This is so beautiful.......2006-02-07
I've been a massage therapist for seven years, and I have lots and lots of relaxation music. I have owned this c.d. three different times because I have listened to it to the point of wearing it out several times over. It is so beautiful and rich in perfection, and if your smart its really easy to time your massage to. If your not an M.T. just get it to have in your collection when you'd like to relax, you won't be sorry.
A Musical Tranquilizer.......2000-07-22
This is a terrific collection of many of Mozart's best known and most beloved pieces. You will probably recognize many of the melodies - and with this CD, of course, you'll learn their names. This CD is really aptly named - it is a very 'relaxing' collection of beautiful music. One reviewer said that its great for the car - but also after that long, grinding day at work - you know, the kind of day where you feel especially eaten-up. You just want to go home and sit in your favorite chair and put on some music... It is also an excellent album to get the kids started on lovely classical music. Highly recommended!
guaranteed to relax you whether at home or in the car.......1999-04-23
this assortment of melodies is the perfect gift for the new mother, the new baby, or anyone else who wants to be stimulated by the classical sounds and soothed by the melodies. a definite must for the car - where much stress occurs in traffic jams.

Yikes!.......2007-05-28
My husband and I come from musical backgrounds and listen ALL types of music. When we first played this (and it will be the LAST time) we couldn't stop laughing at the overblown, derivative 'big hair' sound of this band. This band sounds like they were attempting to copy Queen, the Scorpions, etc. The drumming is boring and basic, the guitar sounds like every band from the 80's: carpal tunnel inducing generic shred. The lyrics sound like they were written using "Formulaic Lyrics That Sound Like They Mean Something 101". And if the singer sang 'WhoaOHOHOHOHOHOaaaaaaa' once, he must have sang it a zillion times. Maybe he was in pain. I know we were after listening to this...
An enjoyable piece of work.......2007-04-17
In general, The Final Countdown--from the Swedish band Europe--is one of my favorite albums. Back in early 1987, I was captured after being exposed to the impressive video for "The Final Countdown." Later, I was given the cassette, then got the CD, and finally procured this remastered CD edition (which was put out in 2001). Originally, The Final Countdown--Europe's third full-length album--was released in 1986. It displays regal-sounding, finessed qualities. It is obvious that the group put a lot of time into the creation of this piece of work, with its catchy hard rock. Pleasing songwriting, solid musicianship, and polished sound quality are in evidence. In addition to the original ten tracks, this remastered CD version sports three extra bonus live cuts which come from a concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, England during 1987: "The Final Countdown," "Danger on the Track," and "Carrie." One of the things that I like about this album is how well the guitar and keyboard playing work in combination. John Norum's guitar work is skilled, and his guitar solos are nicely tailored, melodic, and memorable. Keyboardist Mic Michaeli lays down some nice sounds on the proceedings, too; also, he provides keyboard solos on "Danger on the Track" and "Cherokee." A notable singer, Joey Tempest provides tenor vocals that are not only soaring and engaging, but also industrious. The songs that I favor are "The Final Countdown" and "Carrie." Endowed in stateliness, "The Final Countdown" is a special composition because of its majestically great keyboard line, supplied by Michaeli, and Norum's sprightly, never-to-be-forgotten guitar solo (one of my favorite guitar solos, in general). "Carrie" is a pretty power ballad exhibiting expressively smooth vocals from Tempest and Norum's passionate-sounding, indelible guitar solo. "On the Loose" is an example of another track that I enjoy; it is a rousing hard rocker that contains a meticulous, fleet-fingered guitar solo from Norum. When it comes to the CD packaging, the CD booklet includes various photos of the group--except for a color one, the rest are black and white--an informative essay, and the song lyrics. The back of the CD jewel case displays a color photo of the band in concert and a snippet of the essay that is featured in the CD booklet. The run time of the CD is just over 54 minutes. The original material makes up just over 40 minutes of this, and the bonus live songs amount to almost 14 minutes. The Final Countdown is a recommendable album.
Still Kickin.......2007-01-17
This album still holds up today because a lot of millenium culture was so similar to the 1980s. It's supposed to be the future, so no 50s teen idols. No teen idols. No Britney Spears. They're queer. These guys are high class. I recognized it was all in Swedish- Swedish lyrics, made in Sweden, recorded in Sweden. Not really the bad taste of the 80s, that was more like the 3 wheeler or Twisted Sister. Cool without being geeky. Cocaine culture was glam and exotic. This album is kind of exotic. On the first side, the first three tracks still hold up and the rest of the album is just as good. Carrie was a big hit. The title track was used in a Pepsi commercial. I know, guys there's a bit of an age differance you should be middle aged now, but this album is still pretty cool.
Remastered Classic.......2006-11-28
Released in 1986, the Final Countdown is the third album from Swedish rockers Europe. To call it a breakthrough album would be a major understatement. The Final Countdown sold millions of copies worldwide and made Europe one of the era's biggest bands. To this day you can't attend a major sporting event without hearing the song "the Final Countdown" in the closing minutes. This is the song and album that made me a Europe fan for life.
It's may also be the band's weakest album.
Hear me out. 20 years after its release it is possible to look at the Final Countdown objectively in comparisons to Europe's other albums. Sales figures aside, the Final Countdown followed what is arguably the band's best album - 1984's Wings of Tomorrow (I say arguably because I sometimes think 1991's Prisoners in Paradise may be the best thing the band has ever released). Instead of a natural progression, the Final Countdown took a sharp turn into hair metal/arena rock territory, amping up the keyboards, power ballads, and of course the hairspray. There's no denying that the move paid off, but musically it resulted in a weaker overall album.
That's not to say it's a bad album. It still has plenty of great songs, like Rock the Night, Time Has Come, Heart of Stone, and of course the Final Countdown, which to this day has to be considered THE Europe song. It also has some weaker, if not downright silly moments, like Ninja, Danger on the Track, and the weepy ballad Carrie. I should probably add Cherokee to that list, but it's so darned catchy I can't bring myself to do it.
The Final Countdown will always hold a special place in my heart, but looking back it's plain to see that the albums released just prior and soon after it are better efforts. It still deserves a 4-star rating for what the album did for the band, and what it meant to me as a kid.
A remastered version of the Final Countdown was released in 2001. In addition to the much appreciated digital remastering, the CD includes three live tracks - The Final Countdown, Danger on the Track, and Carrie. I'm certainly glad there is a remastered version of the Final Countdown available, but I can't help wishing they would give the rest of Europe's back catalog the same treatment.
Sorry, but...........2006-08-22
Europe is just boring, commercial glam rock drivel. They are a very poor representative of the Euro-metal sceen. (I use the term "metal" loosely). The band are OK musicians, while the songwriting is pure, radio-targeted greed.
If you want to listen to some good metal from Europe (the continent, that is) check out King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Children of Bodom or Meshuggah. Final Countdown is just the worst of 80's excess.
