1 out of 5 stars Manufacturer error.......2007-04-17

I received some Chopin piano music in this Sills CD case, even with the correct logo burned in.
Suspicious...

4 out of 5 stars singer.......2007-01-12

Got this for an aria V'adoro Pupille. Was surprised to find tempo so different from other singers' versions, and she has many added florishes, but it is enjoyable. The recording is from a live performance so there are coughs, etc., as well as wild applause, but a nice addition.

3 out of 5 stars Beverly Sills' trills..........2006-09-06

are fake. How can someone hear them and say that no other singer can match or surpass them? Love her all you wish, she used a false technique to produce the trills (as Bartoli does in her fioritura singing - exciting, but not technically accurate); Sutherland, Streich, Gruberova, and Hempel (Ponselle for that matter) executed TRUE, accurate (and quite pleasing to the ear) trills. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest Cleopatra forever.......2004-10-28

Now Beverly Sills definitely ain't a pin-up Cleo like Leonor Varela in the movie disaster from the 90ties but she was a very beautiful woman and had the voice of a sirene in those days, perfect for Handel, as perfect as can be. Her "V'adoro pupille" has to be heard to be believed, it's bursting with seductive colours. Ruth Ann Swenson could learn a thing or two from Sills here when it comes to phrasing and colouring. The "Da tempeste" is flawless, I could listen to it over and over again. Yet, why are there only highlights? Treigle&Sills are so great, they deserve more!

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the ignorant basher.......2003-08-04

This JJ fellow really has a lot of nerves. Lately there's been a diva war between Callas, Sills, and Sutherland and he/she hasn't let up since. To the basher: we have every right to say that Sills is the best singing actress of this century; this is a Sills site! And we do not believe Callas is in the same league. She was a great actress but she had an annoyingly dry, coarse voice, even in her prime.

This is a fabulous live performance, very much comparable to the 1967 recording on the RCA label. I do have to say though, that some of the tempi are very slow, but then again when you have incomparable singing from Sills, one cannot wish for more. ~bash review neutralizer

5 out of 5 stars Elegant and refined with sublime singing by Hunt.......2007-03-19

The overall effect of this interpretation of Ariodante by McGegan is one of elegance, refinement and emotional intensity that flows without being pushed and touches the soul with its singing without being overcontrolled and calculated. This is the main difference between this version and the Minkowski version which has many great moments of lovely singing which surpass the McGegan soloists often, but which is sometimes rushed with overcalculated and overly controlled singing on Otter's part which tarnishes the interpretation. Otter seems not to be really immersed in the part whereas Hunt is. Unforunately the complete recording of this McGegan interpretation is out of print, so get the highlights (this edition)and wait for the re-issue of the complete version.

4 out of 5 stars Something is missing..........2005-08-18

Lovely performance, but I was very disappointed by finding out that the lovely aria V'Adoro, Pupille is missing!! Such a great pity. I went to the complete recording on Amazon, and I listened to the track (number six, cd two). I found out, the tempo was quit slow. But I was still very disappointed of course.
Anyway, this cd is lovely, buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Arias, But Where Are The Choruses?.......2002-08-10

This is actually a 5-star performance and recording of "Giulio Cesare", but for me, a Handel CD of all arias is missing a significant element of Handel's genius. Would it really have reduced the great music if a few choruses had been included on this 78 minute disc? It would only have made it more enjoyable to my ears!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Females Inhabit Splendid Handel Recording.......2005-01-09

Four magnificent singers are put on starry-eyed display in this energetic recording of a live performance of the 1999 Paris Opéra production of Handel's "Alcina". Each delivers their individual stamp in some of Handel's most powerful and beautiful arias. The irony is that the basis upon which these emotions pour forth in such majestic torrents is actually a fanciful tale about a sorceress, Alcina, who lures men to her island only to turn them into animals when they fall in love with her. Needless to say, things get complicated when Alcina truly does fall in love with Ruggiero, who already has a fiancée, Bradamante, who disguises herself as his brother but not before Alcina's sister, Morgana, also falls in love with Ruggiero. Even though it sounds like a convoluted Shakespearean comedy, Handel took this plot quite seriously and filled his work with sonorous set pieces that tear down the characters' vulnerability in often ravishing fashion.

In her first foray into Handel, superstar soprano Renée Fleming cuts a very passionate, sometimes imperious figure in the title role. Her high point is Alcina's intense Act II aria, "Ah! Mio cor", where upon being abandoned by Ruggiero, she lets out an aria of heartbreaking poignancy but then gives way to her regal bearing and plots her regal act of vengeance. Having just seen Fleming in the Stephen Wadsworth production of Handel's "Rodelinda" at the Metropolitan Opera last week, I was impressed at how she harnessed her famous trilling to fit the contours of her put-upon character. With Alcina, Fleming embodies a character more to her passionate singing style, her coloratura resplendent without undue ornamentation. Mezzo-soprano Susan Graham does a "pants" role as Ruggiero and plays the lover with conviction. She sings her Act III aria, "Sta nell'Ircana", with a romantic openness befitting the bewildered character. Soprano Natalie Dessay handles the soubrettish role of Morgana with fiery virtuosity, certainly on full display in her Act I aria, "Tornami a vagheggiar". Contralto Kathleen Kuhlmann carries the vocal heft and executes the diction required to be persuasive as the disguised fiancée, a smaller role but given a nice showcase with the Act I aria, "È gelosia". The inevitable capper is the climactic trio performance of Fleming, Graham and Kuhlmann on "Non è amor, nè gelosia", as powerful a melding of supreme voices as you are likely to hear on an opera recording. Much of the credit is due to the estimable William Christie conducting the expert playing of Les Arts Florissants. This is a splendid recording with a minimum of stage and background noise. Strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This CD has opened my eyes to Baroque Opera.......2003-07-30

I haven't had much interest in trying out baroque opera, based on the first opera I went to, which was Monteverdi's Orpheus. I found it to be quite a bore. Ever since, I hadn't wanted to try out other baroque opera. I, however, am a big fan of Renee Fleming, and as I have been slowly gathering most of her releases to date, I eventually decided I wanted to get the Alcina recording --- at least the hightlight to see if it was tolerable. Immediately, within the first two arias, I was reminded of the beauty subtlety and power of Renee's voice but the very same qualities are found in this opera! I have returned to this disc many times just relishing in each aria. Each one has such beautiful melodies and singing. The recording quality is very good too. This recording only furthered my belief that Renee Fleming can do no wrong in my eyes. God bless her that she may have a long and fruitful recording career---for my benefit.

5 out of 5 stars Best Alcina.......2003-06-03

Renee Fleming is really good at these vocalise type songs. She's like a machine. I loved 'Si Son Quella'. She was in really fine voice that day.The sound quality of this cd excellent. Natalie Dessay amazed me on 'Tornami a Vagheggiar', but her voice isn't nearly as pretty as Renee's. Susan Graham sounded like the lady who sings at church on 'Verdi Prati'.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly beautiful.......2005-12-27

This version has the highlights of The Messiah. All the ones you know. Enough that you will have the whole gospel story presented.
In beautiful baroque style with artfully added embellishments but defintly not overdone.
The soloist all pour every ounce of musical perfection to this recording.

I second what the previous reviewer said. Ms Battle brings heart and beauty as I have never heard to "I Know That my Redeemer liveth"

My onlynegative would be that the trumpets are sometimes too brilliant. But for heavens sake they are shouting the Glory of God can't really complain about that.

ENJOY

5 out of 5 stars Excellent singing at a bargain price! .......2005-04-18

I was very pleased with the quality of the singing in this Messiah highlights. All the soloists are excellent, especially Kathleen Battle, in the arias "Rejoice Greatly" and "I Know My Redeemer Lives." Her singing alone is worth the price of this CD! The soloists frequently embellish on the notes in their singing, so if you like that, you'll love their re-endition. If you like it just plain and straight, you may not be used to that.

Both the Toronto Mendelssohn choir and the Toronto Symphony orchestra make for a full-bodied, majestic sound. Andrew Davis does a great job of conducting.

The selections are fairly generous (18 tracks); I wished they would have included the bass aria "Behold I Tell You a Mystery".

I have many versions of Handel's Messiah and I really enjoy this one, especially due to the high quality of musicianship and singing at such a bargain price. The complete version of this Messiah CD will cost you over $30. These highlights are just right. I've bought copies of this CD to friends and they all loved it. Highly recommended!

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars A wonderful recording...with one big flaw.......2003-10-16

Handel's "Semele" is a fascinating work. Handel wasted none of his enormous talents on this piece, considered by some a secular oratorio or a "bawdy" opera. Filled with inventive arias, expressive recitatives and sprightly choruses, it is a worthwhile addition to any Baroque lover's CD collection. Here's the problem...Norma Burrowes in the title role. She has a nice instrument, but her vowels are so horrible that they cause the majority of her singing (especially in the upper register) to be out of tune. Though she is at ease with the demands of the role- punishing coloratura and range- the intonation is a constant bother. Fortunately, the rest of the cast is stellar. Anthony Rolfe Johnson is a treasure...his readings of "Where e'er you walk" and "Come to my arms" are models of stylish and expressive singing. The mezzo roles of Ino and Juno are split between two singers, an unusual casting choice. Both singers rip up their recitatives and arias. The Monteverdi Choir is, as always, pinpoint accurate and dramatically appropriate. John Eliot Gardiner leads the proceedings at a nice, restrained clip. The bottom line is that I would reccomend the Nelson complete recording with the unbeatable Kathleen Battle and a cast of American all-stars over AND buying this highlights disc for the excellent choral singing and Anthony Rolfe Johnson.
