Sacred Spirit: Chants and Dances of the Native Americans is an 11-song journey bridging the gap between ancient and contemporary history, tradition and modern instrumentation. While it is impossible to fully realize such scope on a single disc, Sacred Spirit makes the choice to represent all indigenous Americans rather than become mired in the potentially divisive bog of politics and tribal allegiance. All but two melodies are entirely traditional, bringing together flute, drums, and vocals with a cello and keyboard wash. This marriage is most effective on the lovely bowing of "The Cradlesong," and the looping electro-acoustic beauty of "Wishes of Happiness & Prosperity." Elsewhere, synthetic elements are overwhelming, detracting from a song's essence, as with the spongy nervosity of "Elevation." An uneven offering, Sacred Spirit doesn't quite live up to its promise. There are a few tracks that are really great on this CD. I expected more Native America chanting/singing and less electronic music. That being said, I really like the CD. It does strike a spiritual chord during some of the tracks. There are reviews here that look like they belong in a magazine. I will just say that if you like World Music or New Age music (and they ARE different), I suspect this is a very worthwhile CD to add to your collection.

THE best CD i've bought in a long long time!!!!.......2007-04-09

I was watching one of Youtube's clip of the Grand Canyon's Skywalk that opened up last year on an Indian reservation. The clip has this most beautiful trance-like mellow groove song on it and i HAD to find out what or who it was by. Thanks to the helpful people who posted a reply, i was able to find and obtain this CD. The song on that Youtube clip was called [ Ly-O-Lay Ale Loya (Circle Dance)]. As the title of this comment says, it IS the best CD i've bought in a VERY a long time. In fact i'm listening to it now as i'm writing this.
The combination of Trance, Newage, Lounge and tranquil music is enough to take you away. I wanna say it's like a combination of Deep Forest meets Jam and Spoon meets Enigma. I just can't put it into better words than the other people who has posted the same comments about this CD. I HIGHLY recommend buying this and enjoying it! I just can't seem to get tire of it!

Soothing Native Music.......2007-03-30

I am a fan of infusion between tribal beat and modern music. This collection is wonderful infusion between tribal beat and enchanting vocal blended with modern instrumental sound. If you like Deep Forest you will definitely love this. It is not like Enigma or Magna Canta but it has it's own charm. I am going to buy all Sacred Spirit volumes after hearing this.

Like its predecessor, the collection mixes chant and song with dance beats and electronic instrumentation. While tracks such as "Dela Dela" and "Yane-Heja-Hee" meld these elements most effectively, the overall effect of the synthesized sound is heavily over the top and distracting from the gentle melodies and heartfelt cries of Native music at its best. A prime example is the tender and lovely female vocal on "May You Walk in Sunshine," obscured by overly aggressive accompaniment. A new type of music for the soul. It's wonderful. It's beautiful. It's exciting. And worth listening to. It's Native American chants and dances
done with some of the most amazing music I've ever heard.

The music has a rhythmic beat that's very catchy, but very soothing. I enjoyed it immensely.

I expected more of this volume since the first one is real extraordinary, and seems to be hard to beat. However is good enough to have it. Good production and most of the tracks are in the same mood of the first volume.

We bought this CD while visiting Arizona last summer. We loved it so much that we have purchased this copy through Amazon for a friend as a Christmas Gift. He loves it too! This is a great combination of spiritual, Native music and chants along with "pop" melodies. I normally play inspirational CD's....lots of Native flute music, and meditation CD's but this one (and also Sacred Spirit Vol. 1) I can play when I have guests over and they do not fall asleep!
Love it!

i remember listening to the cd before going to a healing movement class. the music and chants vibrate the truth of being. i was able to feel grounded with the ability to completely empty out into the silence of the divine. one of my challenges it to keep my feet here while embracing the inner light. this cd is very supportive of the healing journey and wherever i am in the moment. a beautiful merging of primal sounds and pure light. thank you for the gift of this cd!

Cave of the Siddhars CD entered my life back in May of 2006. Since then I have listened to it every day at least once. The blending of instruments and Nandhi's voice are amazing. Love it !! The resonance and high vibrational energies seem to awaken and stir ancient memories of knowingness within my being. At the same time bringing a sense of immense peace and joy. My cells dance to the vibrations. A CD that can be listened to anytime anywhere. Highly recommended. Dare to enter the magical/mystical realms of the Siddhar Masters and you won't be disappointed :)

Soothing Music.......2007-05-12

I purchased two copies of this beautiful CD in March 2007. The chanting, both native American and Gregorian, is superb and the music is captivating and soothing. I took one copy to my lady in Russia in April 2007 so she can play it and it helps her to remember me until we are together again in July, then September, then December. And I can truly say this CD, especially song number five "In Search of Kindred Spirits", has helped bring us together. In Search of Kindred Spirits is OUR song, but you are welcome to buy a copy of the Sacred CD and listen to it and nine other nice songs. T.L.S.

This album of highly original music sounds great on the first listening, yet becomes even more interesting on every succeeding play; you never know what's "around the next bend", but it always works. Like a kaleidoscope producing an ever-changing combination of patterns and colors, Kevin's layering of voices, instruments and "beat" makes the music sound fresh and new every time you listen. His knitting of Native American voices, Gregorian chant, electronica, wind instruments, an occasional keyboard carrying a singable melody, and even echoes of the English choral tradition evokes an all-inclusive spirituality with an underpinning of anticipation and exhilaration. A real masterpiece!

I wondered how Wood would follow up "Scenic Listening", one of the best original new age CDs since its release in 2001. Like "SL", "Sacred" is beautifully relaxing but this time the spiritual underpinnings are more obvious. Wood blends ancient Gregorian and native American voices with modern textures / accompaniments, resulting in emotionally moving music unlike any other. Graceful, joyous, peaceful and wise, "Sacred" is a worthy successor to "SL". Check it out!

Great for yoga and/or meditation. The only thing I'd change is the talking on the last track--I find it's distracting. Otherwise, I'd rate it five stars. My classes love it.

There's too much caterwauling in this one. Not for meditation, maybe as a quiet background for ambience, I dunno. It didn't quite inspire any transcendental experiences for me.

I like this album, it is soothing and meditative. The music is compelling and the vocals are pleasant. Unfortunately, I can't give it a higher rating, because some of the Sanskrit words are incorrectly pronounced. I'm not trying to be picky, but you'd think that Deborah who's written a book on healing music would know how to pronounce the lyrics of her songs. With that in mind, the album is quite good.

Very good if you like Indian mantras.......2005-08-12

The album is very enjoyable to listen to. If you like a meditative type of music. Several songs are chants (or mantras) that have been put to music. I liked this one very much.

I learned to pronounce Divine names I read in spiritual books,
but never heard chanted before, from this CD.
As a woman, following the voice of a women guide
was easier for me to echo, then male chants.
It is the perfect CD to play and chant along while ringing
my own crystal bowls and sets a relaxing, prayerful mood
before going to sleep, for me.

Wow ! This new release from Steve Gordon is really exceptional. I got it as a gift for the holidays and it just blew my mind. The orchestration and exotic insturments are amazing and the blend of vocals with chants from around the world really creates a trencendent sound. I've been blissed out for the past several hours and can't stop playing it. Spectacular and highly recommended !

I've never written a review before, but when I heard this album, I felt compelled to write my feelings down of what it invoked and share them with someone. I've hardly listened to much native sounding music, but this album is much more contemporary and it reached a place in me I didn't know I had. I just sat there and rocked with the rhythms. Drum Prayer made me feel an akin-ship to the whole of the world. I didn't know what the words meant when listening the first couple of times, I just got into the instrumentation and vocals., They were so joyful, so soothing and visionary that I was compelled to at last read the liner notes. The Sanskrit, Tibetan and Lakota chants added to the native drums, flute and guitar are so well woven together, I can't imagine how it could have been done any better. I have played this album countless times already and enjoy it every time. My favorite track is `Holding the Vision'. I highly recommend this album.

I find this new release by Steve Gordon to be exquisite and perfect for massage, yoga, tantra and ecstatic dance. The blending of diverse instruments and sacred devotional chants are absolutely entrancing, making it exceptionally easy to slip deeply into an exhalted state of bliss. The vocals are particularly beautiful. I have really been a fan of Steve's previous work with both his brother David and Deborah Martin, and with the release of Drum Prayer I feel that he's really outdone himself. I absolutely love it.

This new solo project release from Steve Gordon is exceptional. A real groundbreaking piece of work for the genre, combining a variety of nature sounds and indigenous instruments from around the world, with chants for world peace from several different cultures including Lakota, Sanskrit and Tibetian. This recording melds all of these apparently diverse cultural aspects and sounds together into a delightfully inspiring and unified mix of ancient shamanic rhythms and contemporary world-beat music. Gordon has assembled a virtual host of top artists for this release, including brother David on piano, vocalists Jaya Lakshmi (Lost at Last), Lakshami Devi and Laurie Lovecraft as well as percussionists Girish Gambhira and Kim Atkinson and the amazing Sarod playing of Wynne Paris, with Digeridoo provided by Peter Van Gorder and additional electric guitar and synthesizer tracks from Spotted Peccary Music's Howard Givens. Drum Payer is brilliantly uplifting while still remaining entrancingly relaxing allowing the listener to explore uncharted expanses of this new and vivid sonic realm. The vocals are sensational and incredibly serene. The CD has been playing in the background of my home office for the past several days and each new listen reveals something new and deeper in the mix. I first heard this CD when my friend Wendy brought it during a visit to Oregon. We chanted the whole way to the Bonneville Spa and Hotsprings. I liked it so much I borrowed it for a week and finally got my own. Ragani has the most lovely voice and the instrumentals are fulland luscious.

What immediately strikes me about this recording is Ragani's sincere devotion to her guru and to the divine. This is evidenced in the opening mantra, the Akhanda Prayer, a beautiful prayer to the Guru. Though I am not a musician, each chant on this CD seems to me to be well recorded and more importantly these chants are infused with Ragani's sincerity as a bhakta. I feel as though I am listening to a seasoned yogini when I listen to this fine collection of chants.
Especially appealing to me about these chants is the shift from a slow repetition of the Name to an accelerated and ecstatic repetition. The gradual acceleration has the effect of locking my mind's attention onto the mantra so that by the time the chant ends, my mind is subdued and I experience the peace brought about by the chant. In other words, when the chant is moving very quickly, there is less room for thoughts (other than the Name) to creep in. By the time the chant speeds up the Name takes hold and my mind begins to settle down. My particular favorites are Sita Ram and Shiva Hara. Whereas Sita Ram is intense, by contrast Shiva Hara is light and uplifting. In addition, the chants on this CD are all in call in response style which makes participation in the chants very easy.

I thought no other kirtan style music could even compare to Krishna Das (whom I love dearly), but Ragani's voice is so beautiful. This CD is enchanting so much so that I cannot seem to tire of listening.

Exquisitely Beautiful.......2004-11-28

This is one of the best New Age/Kirtan CDs of recent years. The final track, "Rama Rama" is one of the most achingly beautiful songs I've ever heard. It's as if you're listening to Sita, the legendary heroine of the epic Ramayana, actually calling for her husband Rama, who's half a world away. Ragani is one of the most inspired artists in the new genre of Western kirtan music. I play this CD often.

What a gift ! I feel incredibly fortunate to have been given the gift of the Gordon's 20th anniversary compilation album Sacred Drum Visions from my wife for the holidays. It is trully an exceptional collection and likely my favorite of the all the Gordon's releases thus far, as it contains many of the best tracks from their incredible highly-acclaimed native music series including Sacred Earth Drums, Sacred Spirit Drums and Drum Medicine as well as 3 magnificent new tracks. The Gordon brothers music has really evolved in a number of unique ways over the years. And though their music stems from a native American influence it artfully combines sounds and instumentation from many indigenous cultures from around the world, making their sound trully universal; and this clearly shines through in this compilation. Perhaps the best thing about this particular release is the perfectly sequenced flow of each track into the next creating a sonic journey that reaches back in time and trancends the mundane world taking the listener on a journey of the Spirit and the Imagination. The 3 new tracks are really exceptional gems. I particularly like Faithkeeper Part I, which opens the CD and Light of the Canyon, the jewel within the center of these tracks. This CD is far more than a retrospective of the Gordon's amazing body of work, it is a powerful, transformative and healing musical journey of the heart. I highly recommend it.

Hands down, this is one of the best CD's for renewal and relaxation. If your mind is filled with thoughts and you want to clear them, play this CD. I wish I could find more CD's by Craid Pruess with Ananda (the voice on this CD). Truly one of the best healing sounds available.

As a travel writer, I've been enchanted by the music and spiritual ambience of places outside our normal range of experience in the US. This CD brings back all the mystery of the world's most enigmatic sites, from Kathmandu to Cairo, Spitsbergen to Patagonia, Hanoi to Nuku'alofa, and Jaisalmer to Moorea. It's a treasure.

Incredible CD. Really. If you want to take an international journey without artificial assistance (except your sound system), this album provides the trip. I was given this album several years ago by someone who doesn't like "new age" music. Yet, I would not classify this work in that category. I have only listened to the soundbites, provided by Amazon, to compare this album with Chris' other works. It is not the same. This is one of the best albums I own. When I am upset, cannot sleep or just need to change the subject in my head's jibberish--it's the only thing that works for me. Thanks Chris.

A mystical experience!.......1998-09-04

This cd ranks very highly as one of Chris' best works to date and receives my highest recommendation! The sounds, both vocal and instrumental, are soothing to the mind as well as the soul. Images of ancient temples will come to mind as you sit back and 'feel' the music.

Not his best effort.......1998-06-13

Pretty disappointing considering some of his earlier work, especially his collaborations with Paul Voudouris. I guess it's an attempt at a more ethnic style of new age music, but he has done much better.
