Fascinating music, well introduced.......2001-08-28
I was first introduced to the music of Medtner in 1994 when I heard Boris Berezovsky perform three "Fairy Tales" at a recital. I was so taken that I had to begin collecting Medtner's music on CD. This album, Geoffrey Tozer's first volume of the piano works of Medtner, was my first Medtner CD. Mr. Tozer is a very fine pianist, and the Chandos stereo sound is first rate. The result is a captivating introduction to Medtner's music. The music is complex, harmonically daring, sometimes quirky, whimsical at times and always evocative. Mr. Tozer plays sensitively and is in complete technical command. He does us a wonderful service in bringing this music to a wider audience. Through this disc I have come to know and love many more pieces by Medtner, and I have been inspired to buy each new volume of Mr. Tozer's set as it has become available. This is the volume of the set that I play most often. It is a rich introduction to this fascinating music.

Tozer is brilliant!.......2005-01-19
I am a big fan of Andre-Hamelin and agree that Tozer is lesser-known than Hamelin as a previous reviewer said. But it does not damage the brilliancy of Tozer at all. He has a great sense of structure and his phrasing is luminous. His talent as a virtuosi makes it possible to challenge this extremly difficult works and the result is great. Bravo for Tozer!!
Uknown Greatness!!!!.......2002-05-12
He might not be a very well known composer but I can truly say that these pieces are something beautiful!! I also have the music book of Medtner and its a good workout on the keyboard, he is worth giving a listen, NO DOUBT!!
He's not Marc-André Hamelin.......2000-03-06
Geoffrey Tozer deserves our applause for bringing the solo music of Medtner to our attention in modern times. But the performances on this disc have been superseded by the incredible traversal, in a boxed set, of the sonatas plus other pieces, by Marc-André Hamelin, who is the most amazing pianist in this sort of repertoire before the public today.

Classic Romanticism Beautifully Rendered.......2004-11-28
Nikolai Karlolovich Medtner (5 Jan. 1880-Moscow died 13 Nov. 1951-London) was one of the greatest pianists of his generation. Both his parents were of German descent whose families lived in Russia for several generations. His talents were recognized early and he entered the Moscow Conservatory at the age of 12. His decision to become a composer was largely his own, but he did continue to play the piano. He returned to the Moscow Conservatory where he taught piano at which time he became friends with Rachmaninoff. In 1921, Medtner emigrated to the west and after spending some years in Paris he finally settled in England where he spent the rest of his life. Apart from a single piano tour in Russia in 1927, he never saw his homeland again. He married his ex- sister-in-law in 1919. His musical output consists of 100 beautiful songs taken from Pushkin and Goethe, a few chamber works and many piano compositions. He went his own way and is one of the most under-rated composers of the 20th Century. This is a wonderful recording which captures a wide range of his piano work from his "Skazka" (fairy tale) to his Canzona and Sonatas. Eight compositions in all, each exquisitely played by one of my favorite contemporary pianists, Nikolai Demidenko. This excellent recording was made in September 1992. We are very fortunate to live in an age where we can easily listen to and enjoy such refined music. Don't bother getting bogged down in the gobbledygook in the liner describing the works. Just listen.
BORING.......2003-02-28
I'm out of sympathy with Medtner's music. It sounds like crepuscular meditations on the dullest aspects of human existence - at least in this recording. Demidenko has plenty of firepower (for example in the central section of the "Tragic" Sonata), but it's mere virtuosity. That may be Demidenko's fault, not Medtner's. Then again, Marc-Andre Hamelin's super-virtuosic account of Medtner's Sonatas has the same problem of creepy dullness.
Medtner sounds good only in his own performances, in my opinion. Amazon has the discs of his recordings of his own solo works. These are actually interesting and musical. Conclusion: Demidenko (and Hamelin) is hyped; Medtner has not yet found a superstar champion of his strange creations.

this cd is rated very fine to super excellent. highly recommended introduction to medtner's solo piano works, passionately and brilliantly performed by the great Demidenko.
