Amazon.com essential recording

Dark, somber, and thematically unified as no previous album by the Police, Ghost in the Machine deals almost exclusively with the negative effects of modern political and technological culture. The only departure from this focus is "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," a perfect pop song and radio hit. Elsewhere, the album treats such issues as the hope underlying resistance to oppression, the dismissal of most of the nonindustrialized world, the daily bombardment of words and images that overload the senses, and the frequent recourse to violence for personal or political expression. The songs are presented in what are, for the Police, unusually dense, layered arrangements. Andy Summers's guitar lines are even more ethereal than usual, with Sting's bass parts bobbing in a mix seasoned with keyboards and sax and propelled by Stewart Copeland's unmistakable, idiosyncratic drumming. While Synchronicity gave the Police their greatest success with hits and videos, Ghost in the Machine is the band's best recording. --Albert Massa

3 out of 5 stars This One, Not So Much..........2007-06-29

If you want to discover The Police, do yourself a favor and check out their first two releases, Outlandos d'Amour (released November of 1978, highlights include Roxanne, Masoko Tanga) and Regatta De Blanc (which translates to "White Reggae" released October, 1979, highlights include Message In a Bottle, Walking On the Moon, Bed's Too Big Without You). These releases have the vital energy and punk-reggae-power-trio sound that really got them noticed. I also recommend 1980's Zenyetta Mondatta. The first release in the States that got a lot of airplay on the radio, Zenyetta Mondatta managed to be commercial success while carrying forward that great sound. Hits include De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da, Don't Stand So Close To Me, Canary In a Coalmine. I purchased Ghost in The Machine when released and that was the end for me. With this release their sound began the downward spiral, losing the energy and fun of their initial releases. Outlandos d'Amour [Digipak] Regatta De Blanc

Ghost In The Machine is an exceptional CD and probably the darkest of all of them. Invisible Sun, Spirits In The Material World, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Rehumanize Yourself, Demolition Man. The entire CD is a very interesting evaluation of mankind.

4 out of 5 stars Lyrics VS Music.......2007-03-29

As a Professional musician and a long time fan of The Police, I'm getting a little sick and tired of all the reviews focusing almost entirely on the lyrics with their symbolism and their socio-political message, etc...

Apart from token lines like: "With airy but moody synths and keyboards...", there's simply no reference at all to Andy Summers' incredibly ingenious and unique guitar playing with all its different colours and textures, his imaginative use of rhythm as well as his unforgettable riffs.

No mention of Stewart Copeland's breath-taking playing. The drumming that influenced a whole generation...

Nor is there any mention of Sting. Yes, he is a master song-writer but what about his instruments? He would have to be one of the most underrated bass players in the history of good music. As a bass player I've always admired his warm sound and his thoughtful playing. He's supportive and mostly sparse without ever being boring and possesses tonnes of tasty-ness. And what can we say about his voice?! Simply an amazing voice. A rich, totally unique tone that's instantly recognizable, combined with beautiful melodic ingenuity. And, when informed by Sting's tremendous musicality, it makes for some of the most heart-felt singing in all of popular music.

It is not my intention to ignore lyrics or their meaning. I love good lyrics as much as anyone else and I am fully aware that for a song to be a 'good song', it has to have both great lyrics and great music working in harmony. All I'm simply saying is that to concentrate exclusively on lyrics (brilliant as they might be) and to ignore the musician's/producer's contributions to the overall creation of a song is to basically relegate music's role to simply background filler. Like a movie soundtrack or a boring one-bar-loop repeated ad-nauseam in a bad Rap song.

The members of The Police deserve much more than that.

Wonderful CD. The sound is very pleasant to listen to and unique and it will continue to be a classic for years to come. I remember also listening to these songs in the very early 80's (1981) when they were really popular. That was when you had to listen them on a record or a tape recorder. My brother used to listen to this album all the time. I guess that's how I was introduced to their songs way back in the golden years of the early 80s.

5 out of 5 stars The Police - GHOST IN THE MACHINE (1981).......2006-08-06

Those who thought The Police had peaked on 1980's ZENYATTA MONDATTA were proved wrong when their subsequent album, GHOST IN THE MACHINE, was released. It's a flawless blend of reggae, rock and new wave; it's also the group's darkest album. GHOST IN THE MACHINE is also the band's most focused release, with most of the songs revolving around politics or government; the biggest exception is the megahit single "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", an upbeat pop masterpiece ranking among the band's best compositions. Every song is magnificent; stand-outs include the singles "Spirits In The Material World" and "Invisible Sun"; the explosive "Omegaman"; the razor-edged, fast-paced "Rehumanize Yourself"; and the addictive "Hungry For You (J'Aurais Tojours Faim De Toi)". Sting's songwriting has rarely been better; Stewart Copeland's drums and Andy Summers' guitars are excellent. The band's jazz influence comes out on numerous songs, thanks to some great saxophone parts by Sting. As Police imitators began popping up, the group started shedding its reggae influence, as seen on GHOST IN THE MACHINE; but on their subsequent album, they tossed out their reggae-rock once and for all.

      Album Description

      The Repo Session

Ghost in the Machine is back to haunt you again! The follow up CD to `The Haunting Begins…' has 8 new songs along with bonus tracks and remixes bringing the total to 17 songs! `The Repo Session' features the club smash `Rodeo', `Lady Love' and `Redemption'.

The sound of Ghost in the Machine has matured into an electrifying sonic force to be reckoned with. With Chris Weerts on vocals, RJ Thompson sharing axe duties and Mike Kern creating the foundation, they have added new elements and dimension to facilitate their musical evolution. One thing that has remained the same there is no genre to completely describe Ghost in the Machine. They fuse electro, dance, metal, techno, industrial, urban and that's just the beginning.

Lyrically, Ghost in the Machine falls to the dark side, retaining a glimmer of hope. Topics range from unrequited love to sex, from escaping oppression to spiritual enlightenment, and from the brutality of the crucifiction of Christ to revolutions.

Listen to the new album, see if you can define it. Ghost in the Machine thinks not. A fresh sound that you've not heard before.

      Album Description

The Haunting Begins... is the first full-length CD release from Ghost in the Machine. It is clearly the most innovative and mature effort to date in both musical and production senses. The Haunting Begins... is a musically aggressive, thought provoking journey through 13 tracks of unpredictability. When asked about the huge musical variation of The Haunting Begins..., Ghost in the Machine stated, "That's just the way we are and write. We have so many influences, we can't even count them. Our music is a product of this, so it is multi-dimensional as well. Besides, we believe people can relate better to this because they too are multi-dimensional - everybody likes a change or something different occasionally. Different songs match different moods whenever they occur." The Haunting Begins... was recorded, engineered, mixed, mastered and produced at Evil Draft Studios by Ghost in the Machine, in conjunction with 808 MultiMedia, L.L.C..

4 out of 5 stars Some Excellent Individual Tracks but Not Their Best By Far!.......2007-05-18

Coming after the brilliant "Zenyatta Mondatta" it was always going to be difficult to top what would turn out to be their best ever album, one that flowed and where every track fit together cohesively to produce a great overall album rather than just a collection of tracks. The tracks on this album don't seem to run very cohesively or flow as well together.

There are some brilliant tracks here, a couple of which represent The Police's best ever tracks such as "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" and the brilliant "Invisible Sun" but then after a very promising trilogy of great opening tracks, the flow is disrupted by very poor album filler material like "Hungry For You" and "Demolition Man" before ending again with another great trilogy of "Omegaman" (simply brilliant guitar work by Andy Summers and his best ever composition for the band), "Secret Journey" and their most underrated ever track that never made it as a single, the gem, "Darkness" closes out the album.

6 great all-time best ever Police tracks as bookends to 5 truly mediocre fillers is why this album although slightly better than "Outlandos D'Amour", their debut album, and "Synchronicity" their best selling one (mostly because of "Every Breath You Take" and for similar reasons) still falls behind "Zenyatta Mondatta" and "Regatta De Blanc". Still, this is worth getting for the much improved remastered sound quality and for the brilliant 6 tracks; just skip the 5 other tracks. The mini lp replica sleeve is quite well done except that the cardboard used is rather thin and is not the best design that I've seen as compared with other similar releases e.g. all the Bob Dylan ones and we get all the lyrics in both English and Japanese included as well.

        Recommended.
