5 out of 5 stars something to have.......2007-03-14

These CD's are filled with all the awesome relaxing songs for the evening when you need it. It is just one of those must have items in your CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2007-02-19

This album was a "try and see" purchase but I love it. It makes great dinner music, great music to drift off to sleep with, or just nice background filler during social events needing a softer tone. It is not all solo piano music if that s what you are after; the other instruments blend very well however and don't challenge the piano playing. It is a piano album after all!

5 out of 5 stars buy now.......2006-09-01

Want to know why I think the piano is the best musical instrument ever invented? Because no matter how the piano is played, it will always sound good. Whether the music is fast, slow, quiet or loud, it ALWAYS delivers with an appealing sound. This is something you need to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2006-02-22

This is a beautiful calming cd. The playing is excellent and the pieces are well chosen.

5 out of 5 stars Aesthetically Pleasing.......2005-09-14

I simply love piano music. If you're looking to relax, enjoy a peaceful time, then you must check out this album. If you truly enjoy piano music, this album is by far one of the best you can purchase.

As it says....it is the "Most Relaxing Piano Album in the World...Ever..." Well, I haven't listened to all piano albums in the world, but I don't need to, this one is just perfect for me, and I think you will agree!

I would say the pianists' are extremely accomplished. At times, I would admit-it's a bit 'spine tingling'!

Amazon.com essential recording

Yo-Yo Ma might seem like an unlikely protagonist for the tango, but this intrepid musical explorer has taken his task seriously, collaborating with experienced tango musicians. Ma even participates in a posthumous collaboration with one 1987 Piazzolla recording. Furthermore, while he's obviously the headliner here, he doesn't dominate the arrangements nearly as much as he does the billing and photography of the disc. While the result isn't your essential Piazzolla album (that would have to include more of the composer's own playing), it's an atmospheric and convincing collection, perhaps a good introduction for those who don't know the music. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellently performed, Not much Variety.......2007-01-12

Yo-Yo Ma leads an all-star cast in his "Sould of the Tango" project. He offers fresh new arrangements of Piazzolla's masterpieces including "Libertango," "Tango Suite," "Fugatta," and more. The arrangements are expertly performed and the playing is exciting and energetic. There is a lush palatte of sound colors coming from guitars, cellos, pianos and the bandoneon. The music is beautiful and flashy. Pieces are reorchestrated such as the "Tango Suite" pieces which are originally guitar duos now with a cello in the mix and the last track on the album, "Cafe 1930" was originally flute and guitar but Ma performs it on cello and bandoneon. The result is freshly interpreted Piazzolla masterpieces that feature new sound color and new perspective. The music is really quite enchanting.

The only problem with this particular recording is that I think Piazzolla is better heard in moderation. Piazzolla wrote in such a constrianed genre, (classical tango), and thus a whole hour of Piazzolla is a little much to take. This great album doesn't make for much of a great straight through listen, but is much better as a plesant surprise when the computer library or iPod is on shuffle.

5 out of 5 stars A Classy CD.......2004-06-23

Great intro to tango, great to relax and read to.

1 out of 5 stars Great Music BUT - Stupid Sony CD.......2003-07-16

I love this music - plays great on my CD player, but when I tried to play it on my computer at work, I wouldn't work. Sony wanted me to install something that didn't work on my machine (my computer is farely new), so I ended up having a friend copy the music over to a new CD without all that SONY stuff they use to stop pirating probably. Now I can listen at work and it is wonderful. BUT BEWARE ON BUYING CDs like this!

4 out of 5 stars Very good but not what I heard live in Cerritos.......2003-03-05

When I first heard Yo-Yo Ma live in Cerritos several years ago, his closing piece was from the yet released Soul of the Tango.
With that music, the subdued audience was enlightened. With only a Cello and a Piano, the music that was created was unbelievable. It was several months before the CD came out and I was a little disappointed that the energy that was present in the live concert did not translate to the CD. I hope that a Live recording or DVD will eventually be released which does capture the real Soul of the Tango.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Marriage of Two Worlds.......2003-03-05

I have always thought that Tango deserved a more elevated standing with both professional and amateur music lovers and what better way to attain that wish than having Yo Yo Ma join in for a session.(Is that a question or statement?) This is a remarkable CD that ranges a wide spectrum of Tango music, most of it exciting, sensual and daring.

Piazzolla, a transcendent artist, was determined to broaden Tango's appeal and he did so admirably. Lovers of jazz and classical now appreciate this fusion and nowhere is it expressed better than this offering. Ma admits he was delighted with the chance to work with the other artists and though he is the star it is never totally given over to the cello. As much as I like the cello, it cannot hold a candle to the bandoneon, perhaps the closest thing to a human voice outside of humanity.

Some of these works are magnificent interpretations and in the case of Tango, what is important is staying true to the spirit and not the letter of the note. I love the subtle, whining melodies, the rising and falling of the "voice"...the continual yearning.

An added bonus is that this CD contains an introduction for the PC. One can watch an interview with the performer, view photos or watch a video that intersperces the playing of Yo Yo Ma with cutouts from the movie. But this is something I discovered two full years after listenting to the CD. Get this recording and enjoy.

Gidon Kremer, who plays the standard violin repertoire so well, has remained a restless explorer of music. Here is his first album of Piazzolla arrangements, introduced by a moving and perceptive assessment of Piazzolla by composer John Adams. Kremer has completely steeped himself in the spirit of the tango, and of Piazzolla's transformation of this music into concert works. The selection (mostly larger-scale Piazzolla works), the varied arrangements, and the compelling quality of the playing make this one of the best albums of this music not involving the composer's own performances. And if you love it, you'll be glad to know that Kremer's second Piazzolla album is also available. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully captivating music by the tango master.......2005-10-25

I was introduced to the music of Astor Piazzolla by the more than great violinist Gidon Kremer when he played a virtuosic tango as an encore. Whenever a rich new vein of wonderful music is opened to me, well, it makes for a bright and happy day. Not long after I picked up this CD and I can recommend it to you highly. This is more than just tango dance music, these are serious and contemplative compositions that use the Tango as the vehicle just as the classical and especially Baroque composers used their dance music for instrumental compositions. The music is full of mood, sensuality, rhythm, lush harmonies, dissonance, love, and pain. It is a music of contrasts and never gets too fussy or complicated. It wears its heart on its sleeve and draws us in because it is so charming.

Each piece has its own varied ensemble and the musicians in that ensemble also arrange the music for that track. Kremer leads from the violin in all of them, after all it is his album and his hommage to Piazzolla. However, the instruments used depend on the musical materials and mood of the piece. The piano is used quite a bit, and at times there are wind instruments. The bandoneón is required in tango, as well. It is a kind of concertina that was developed and made in Germany, but adopted in Argentina for the Tango. It has a wonderfully reedy sound and is played with buttons on each side of the bellows. Depending on the model, the note can change or stay the same whether you are pulling the bellows out or pushing them in, but in all of them there are two voices always at the octave and gives the bandoneón its characteristic sound.

The only composition not by Piazzolla is a very interesting tango included as a tribute to the master entitled "El sol sueño" by Jerzy Peterbushsky.

This is good music and a very enjoyable change of pace.

4 out of 5 stars When styles mix.......2005-09-07

I bought this record following a live performance by Gidon Kremer et al. at the Verbier Festival. The mixture of classical music with a dose of jazz on a Latin base produces an interesting result that is quite surprising at first. However, the more one hears, the more the result grows on the listener, just as at the live show where the audience, somewhat stunned at the outset, gave a standing ovation at the end.

Overall, the mélange is pleasant, chill listening to be appreciated by fans of any of the three styles of music.

4 out of 5 stars Explains It All To Those Wounded in Love.......2005-01-16

Ever have a moment where you loved someone so much you hated him?

Ever have a relationship you could not get out of your mouth, your mind, your heart, your system, but that you knew was over and done with forever and ever, and you'd never even see the other again?

Ever feel so happy you wanted to cry? No, sob? Wrenching, wracking sobs? From happiness, now.

Yes?

Have I got a CD for you: Hommage a Piazzolla, featuring Gidon Kremer.

Like many, I suspect, I have a mixed relationship to tango. When I put on a tango CD, I fear I'll be hearing something that sets my teeth to jangling and makes me want to slap someone in the face.

This isn't that. You could listen to most of this while sitting perfectly still, on a window sill, in fact, with the lights down low in your apartment, as you stare out at the rain-slicked city at night. A drink sits on a nearby table, unfinished...you have no will to finish it.

(It's hard not to imagine these things while listening to this music; really, it's all so poetic, cinematic, irresistable.)

At some point, though, you're probably not going to be able to sit still any more, and you'll have to put that rose in your teeth and cut a few moves.

Tango often sounds, to we non-Argentinians, like a parody of itself.

This CD does not.

Rather, when I put it on, not at all sure what to expect, I had one of those epiphanies that art can give you.

I had been brooding over a vexed relationship, one I did not understand, but knew was hurting me, not with any immediacy, but like a sore tooth that could stand to go a few more months before you get over your fear of the dentist to get it fixed.

What bugged me most of all was that I did not understand what was hurting. Rationally, I had no reason to feel troubled.

I put on this CD, with the relationship way in the back of my mind, and I just, immediately thought, "That's it. This music is explaining it all; this music is articulating everything."

Not bad.

This kind of music, music that allows in the true bittersweet of life, the unsolvable, the passion, is all too rare. If music that addresses those qualities is what you crave, this CD might be just what you need.

5 out of 5 stars Great sex music! Comes from the heart!.......2004-07-21

The music and perforamance are so sensually played and achingly beautiful, the hairs on my neck and arms stand up on end. Listen to the opening track and tell me this is not great sex music. Yes, tango is a very sensual art form and this CD is great for those very intimate moments. Of course, sex aside, the music is nothing short of a miracle unto itself. That I was to discover this CD just last year meant I was without it for 7 years since it was released. My life is richer for this and other Piazzolla works done by Kremer.
This CD has become one of those "island" CDs that you would take if you wer so to become deserted on one. You should be so lucky!

5 out of 5 stars Piazzolla's Unofficial Interpreter.......2001-04-12

I first became aware of this CD several years ago as its melancholy strains wafted through the air of a bookstore through which I was browsing. My ears perked up...Piazzolla!!! Upon inquiry, I was shown the CD and I immediately purchased a copy. I couldn't wait to get home and listen to it at elevated volume. What a recording!! Kremer has captured and distilled the essence of Piazzolla's music. Every song is a masterpiece and nearly all of my favorite mid-period Piazzolla compositions are contained within. A special treat is the magnum opus which closes the set, a 12-minute rendering of Le Grand Tango with just Kremer's violin and the restrained passion of Vadim Sakharov's piano to lead your mind into another musical dimension. Gidon Kremer has since recorded a number of Piazzolla-related CDs and in so doing has set himself up as the unofficial interpreter of El Maestro's music. If you like Piazzolla, you are sure to enjoy this CD. I give it my highest recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars Musical grandeur.......2002-11-22

The other reviewers have given this disc it's due superlatives and I would have to concurr, it is sublime. You will not find a more beautiful, rhythmic or enchanting piece of music. As soothing as it is invigorating the guitar work is a marvel. I play this disc constantly and never seem to ge tired of it. You seem to hear new things with each listen, the guitar work is more dazzling each time. Being somewhat of a novice when it comes to the works of Piazzola I find that this disc serves as a good reference point for becoming more familiar with his compositions that were infused with his impecable standards of Argentine tango. This is definitely an excellent disc that shows off the talents of the fast and furious fingering of the frets by Sergio and Odair Assad. Recommneded for guitar afficionados who love the sound of the violin and bandoneon blended to perfection. These are Piazolla masterpieces that lovers of world beat who like their music flavored with a spicy tango beat will enjoy year after year.

5 out of 5 stars Overview of even deeper understanding of Piazzolla's music.......2002-04-14

A few of the tracks found on this CD were originally released on previous efforts of the brothers Sergio and Odair Assad; so this disc is a compilation of sorts. But don't let that stop you.
First appearing on the late eighties recording Sergio and Odair Assad play Latin American Music, Piazzolla's Tango Suite, composed expressly for the brothers, has always been a favorite of mine. It just bristled with energy and vitality. The new recording found here is taken at a slower tempo with the most obvious result being a heightened sense of rhythmical accentuation. Piazzolla did once say that the most important thing for a player to understand about his music was the use of accents. Here you will find a feast for the ears and the soul. The other tracks all share this sense of deep sorrow and angular rhythm that drips from the music. I have NEVER been so taken by a recording. Not only does this CD provide guitar playing of the very highest standards but it also gives us one of the best readings of Piazzolla's work ever. Most highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Sublimely Stupendous.......2001-12-21

Frankly, I didn't know how I would like this CD. The song selection is marvelous, but I own the Assad brothers' Alma Brazileira and find it to be very uneven and was a little afraid I'd find the same here. I did not and was instead very pleasantly surprised.
This CD bears some comparison to Al DiMeola's Plays Piazzolla album. Both are great albums, but the Assads concentrate more on fidelity to the spirit of the compositions and are less given to experimental wanderings than Di Meola.
Its hard to argue with the choice of music played here. Tango Suite is a difficult piece and rarely offered, but the Assads pull it off wth alacrity. The Suite Troileana is another rarely performed and very demanding piece given a judicious rendering here.
My favorites are a very melancholy rendition of the classic Invierno Porteno, Primavera Portena, Decarissimo and a spirited and very competent interpretation of the rarely performed masterpiece Francanapa.
It helps that Piazzolla violinist Fernando Suarez Paz is present on many tracks. His duo with Odair Assad on Bordel 1900 is exquisitely delicate and dreamlike.
If you like Piazzolla, if you like DiMeola, then you are almost sure to like this sublimely stupendous musical feast. My respect for the talent of the Assad brothers has grown enormously and I recommend this CD most highly.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Guitar Magazine Review.......2001-07-18

At their best, Brazilian brothers and guitar duo Sérgio and Odair Assad play as if they were one person---one person blessed with four arms. With their six previous albums for Nonesuch, they have won renown around the globe for their lush, multi-faceted sound, rich in counterpoints and rhythmic adventure. Since their New York City concert debut as teenagers in 1969, the Assad brothers have collaborated with artists such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. Along the way, they have recorded pieces by composers as varied as Scarlatti and Bach, George Gershwin and Argentine neuvo tanguero Astor Piazzolla. The Assads first meet Piazzolla in the 1970s when they were young music students in Rio de Janeiro. Piazzolla was then reaping his first great rewards for his New Tango, and Brazil was one of the first countries to rave over him, even more so than his homeland. After hearing the Assads play a guitar transcription of one of his own pieces for him at a dinner party in Paris in 1983, Piazzolla vowed to write a guitar duet dedicated to them. The composition, "Tango Suite," has since become a modern classic, and following Piazzolla's death in 1991, the brothers have kept the master's music as a central part of their repertoire. This new album is dedicated to Piazzolla's memory, and features nine of his compositions. They range from "Tango Suite" to parts of Piazzolla's stunning celebration of the four seasons of Buenos Aires. Also included are earlier compositions that have almost been forgotten, chief among them the glorious tribute to Piazzolla's mentor, master bandoneonist Anibal Troilo, "Suite Troileana." The pieces played by just the brothers on this album are charmed by a beauty and lyricism rare among guitar duets. They breathe a certain joy and happiness into the melancholic moodiness of Piazzolla's compositions---due in large part to the light sound of their guitarwork versus the original composer's bandoneon, which is without doubt one of the saddest-sounding instruments of all time. Yet the songs where the Assads are joined by the violins of Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Fernando Suarez Paz or Marcelo Nisinman's bandoneon have even more impact with the third dimension coming from the added instruments providing counterpoint to the guitars. This is a stunning album.

5 out of 5 stars Real flute sound.......2007-06-27

I think it's a good interpretation.
And Good sound of flute. Real sound of human breath, I think.
It matches with Piazzolla.

5 out of 5 stars Just Beautiful.......2007-02-24

Being a long-time fan of Astor Piazzolla, I am always on the lookout for new interpretations of his music. I came across this CD recently while browsing the tango section of my favorite Encinitas music store and knew I had to have it. Not only does it contain some of the sublime pieces that Piazzolla had written for guitar and flute, it contains one suite (Cinq Pieces) that I cannot recall ever hearing before.
When I played the CD the first time, I was transfixed. This music is just beautiful. Cecile Daroux and Pablo Marquez are perfectly matched for the music and both turn in virtuoso performances. I know most of these songs note by note and I heard no real mistakes in delivery. That Daroux can do with her flute what is difficult enough on the bandoneon is astounding. She hits every note!
Those who have not heard this CD but are somewhat familiar with the music will find that Marquez' work sounds a lot like that of Al DiMeola's renditions of Piazzolla compositions. That's not a complaint, that's a compliment.
My favorites here are the rarely performed Histoire du Tango suite, Tango-suite #3, and the closing cut Oblivion on which Daroux and Marquez are joined by J J Mosalini Jr. on bandoneon, and Mauricio Angarita on contrabajo to bring the CD to a glorious conclusion.
I am pleased to have encountered this recording and highly recommend it to anyone who is a Piazzolla fanatic.

5 out of 5 stars It is the version I have been looking for for so long..........2007-01-26

After hearing Histoire du Tango during my high school years I have been searching for it. I have hummed the music to many people but none of them know the name of the piece. Only recently I bumped into it on Amazon thanks to its listening samples. Interestingly, I decided to buy this version without listening samples because I just felt it was the right one. And surely it is. My heart aches and joys with the amazing performance by Cecile and Leonardo. They are doing exactly the way I want for Histoire du Tango. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-04-25

I was surprised no one had reviewed this album. It is excellent. I never get tired of it. The guitar playing and the flute, each in their own right are passionately performed. That is not to say they are over the top. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys chamber style tango.

One does not need a SACD Player to listen to this magnificient disk of sweeping, glorious and pervasive sound - the CD is good enough, and can be a preview of what could be heard on a SACD Player. I have rarely enjoyed better sound than this even on the latest DDD disks of brand labels.

Best sound SACD reissue yet:
clear, detailed, resolution, sound-stage, dynamics. Either 2 or 3 channel DSD SACD. Good old Dorati's performance has drive, good tempi.

5 out of 5 stars Analog to SACD done right!.......2004-10-17

This new release of this near-legendary 1959 Dorati/LSO performance goes to the head of the class. Using the earlier CD release as a sonic guide (the series was originally overseen by Wilma Cozart Fine), Universal's audio engineers have, again, given us a nearly perfect transfer of the original master tape to this newest, most advanced digital medium. I can't imagine something more musically satisfying.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Introduction to Igor Stravinsky!!.......2004-05-19

Sony Music's "The Essential Igor Stravinsky" truly lives up to its title. This double-CD set includes nearly every important piece of work (either in part or in whole) by the great Russian composer. The set also presents the pieces in chronological order beginning in 1908 with "Fireworks" and ending in 1966 with his final piece, the short but simple "Owl and The Pussycat". In between, there are excerpts from Stravinsky's most famous works including the first part of "The Rite Of Spring" and highlights from the "Firebird" and "Petrushka" ballets. There are also lesser-known works included as well as his harmonically rearranged version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (a rendition which caused a stir in the early 1940's). The entire collection concludes with a rare recorded interview with Igor Stravinsky himself in which he remembers the infamous premere of "The Rite Of Spring".
The CD booklet includes detailed liner notes as well as a written tribute by Trey Anastasio of the band Phish. The sound quality of the recordings is amazing (even on the historic 1934 recording of "Piano Rag Music"). All in all, this an excellent collection of works by the great Igor Stravinsky. In a sense, this compilation gives the composer the 'rock musician' treatment. It's a 'greatest hits' album and a career-spanning retrospective that serves as an ideal introduction to Igor's music. Even if your not a fan of Classical music, it isn't difficult to listen to the works of Stravinsky and not be stirred.
Definitely The Essential Igor Stravinsky!!!

The CD I bought is great. The music is great. I love Fur Elise music.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Piano.......2007-01-11

This is one of the clearest and most enjoyable CDs I have purchased. The music is pure and all piano, no frills. I feel like I can play, which of course I can not. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys excellent piano.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite for that candle-light dinner .... .......2006-03-02

Perhaps its best to first clarify the context of this CD's title, "Romantic Piano Music." The word "Romantic" here is not about sensuous mood music to share with your significant other. Rather, it refers to the musical era labeled "Romanticism" which started around Beethoven and ended around 1900 with the development of the "modern era." It is odd that Mozart is featured here as he clearly belongs to the preceeding "classical" era (but the piece here is one of his best). So, this CD features solo piano music of that era which has musical characteristics like expressive lyricism ... passionate, personal and poetic emotional displays ... more experimenting with tonal color and harmony ... and frequent shifts of key, tempo and dynamic range (very soft to very loud). So, with especially with this last characteristic in mind, don't expect "Romantic music for a candle light dinner" here as several of the pieces go from quiet, introspective melodies to fast-paced runs or loud, dissonant chords (just hear the first bar of the last track). But, such is "romantic expression" in music. If you are just looking for some nice solo-piano dinner music, try John Field's serene Nocturnes or Chopin's uplifting Waltzes or the quiet compliation disc, "Chopin for Relaxation."

But, if your interest is to explore the great composers and piano literature of the Romantic era, this is a fine CD to do that for many reasons. One reason is the variety of styles and nationalities featured here. One other characteristic of the music of this period was the expression of pride in one's country (Nationalism movement). Nearly all of the composers whose works are featured on this disc were major influences in music history and showed varying degress of Nationism: Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Liszt from Germany ... Chopin from Poland ... Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov from Russian ... Debussy and Satie from France ... and Albeniz from Spain. With such an international line-up of famous composers, you will find a wide range of musical styles, flavors and expressions to discover and enjoy. Most of the selections here are among the more famous piano pieces, so it is a good place to start. And supported by capable artists, good sound quality and some decent liner notes giving the history of the music, this CD provides a compelling journey into the piano music of the mid-late 19th century ... but maybe not ideal for that romantic interlude you might have had in mind.

PS: The title song of this CD, "Fur (for) Elise," is one of Beethoven's most recognizable and simple tunes, often heard in those miniature music boxes or even cell-phone ring tones.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2004-04-08

This is classic. I like this music, because this is piano music.
And I love piano music, because I like to play piano. Don't buy it, if you like pop music, not classic ! Buy it, if you like classic. Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-12-09

Although you may never have heard of any of these pianists, they're all very good and solid performers. It does in no way sound like a budget disc. The programmed pieces work really well together, especially with such a (shatteringly played) finale: Rachmaninov's "Bells of Moscow" Prelude!

Performed in 1930 by the cast and orchestra of the 1928 Berlin premiere (except for Willi Trenk-Trebitsch, the Mackie of the 1929 Prague premiere), this extraordinary recording must be the last word in genuine, unvarnished "authenticity." Even the remastered sound is amazingly good and life-like. The half-spoken, half-sung delivery captures the biting sarcasm of Brecht's text as well as the abrasive bitterness and sinuous lyricism of Weill's melodies, underlined by the punchy, swinging rhythms and indigenously jazzy sound of the orchestra. The result is an uncanny evocation of a historical period and its atmosphere. One can smell the smoky nightclub air, see the garish colors, and feel the unbridled sensuousness. This "abridged" version offers 13 familiar numbers, with most strophic repeats omitted, but includes alternate versions of several songs--four in French, two sung by Brecht himself. There are also two songs from Mahagonny, a long "scene" by Wilhelm Grosz, and two songs each by Rudolf Nelson and Friedrich Hollaender (who wrote the music for the film "The Blue Angel), two of them sung by Marlene Dietrich with her inimitable lascivious sensuality. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful original recording, plenty extras. .......2006-09-11

In quick summary:
- If you're at all familiar with the Dreigroschenoper and all its incarnations, be sure to buy this album. It's the closest you could get to an 'original'.
- If you're completely new to the Threepenny story, I would recommend starting with the 1999 Nina Hagen concert version instead. It's got all the songs left out here, better recording quality, and a more modern approach to the music.

This is not a complete collection of original cast Dreigroschen songs. Rather, it's a selection of the best tracks from the play, often censored and cut short (in all the usual ways), and filled up with seemingly random extras in the genre.

The performers are all quite brilliant, and it's refreshing to hear a 3P without all the screaming and biting from recent versions. Though the songs are by no means slow, they're much more relaxed, more saccharine I would say, than what they've later evolved into. I love both type interpretations, but I often prefer this one.

One very nice bonus is the inclusion of a handful Threepenny songs in French. Otherwise pretty hard to come by. Also, the famous final lines of the movie version (Moritat reprise) are present, which I've only seen in one other recording (the 1981, also led by Miss Lotte Lenya). All in all, an essential CD for Brecht/Weill fans.

5 out of 5 stars This one is really fine. .......2006-03-03

I've been a three-penny freak ever since I was a hanger-on at a Stanford production 40 years ago directed by a Brecht associate from Berlin. It's wonderful to get the authentic original cast records. I really like the added Berlin Chansons, too. "Don't Goggle at that Tango Dancer, Keep Your Eyes on the Guy You Came with!" Or Marlene Dietrich, with "Jonny, When it's Your Birthday, I'll Be Your Guest for a Night."
