No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does.
Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection

I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

We love this C.D.!.......2005-04-03

We received the Baby Cello C.D. as a gift, and my husband and I just love it. The music is truly moving in the most uplifting way, and the songs chosen are just beautiful; not at all stuffy. The true test was when our two-year-old, who had not had a nap all day, got completely wired and still would not go to sleep after 10 p.m. She screamed for 20 minutes as we tried to get her down, until I put Baby Cello on, and the screaming stopped instantaneously! She went to sleep to the C.D. without another wimper! We highly recommend Baby Cello for parents and babies alike, and have bought it for other parents with babies that we know. It uplifts, as well as soothes, depending upon what time of day we put it on, and it serves as wonderful dinner music as well. We can't imagine anyone not loving this C.D.! A.and J. Pieri, Albany,CA

There have never been many compositions written for solo double bass. There probably never will be. But, as anyone who has heard bassist Edgar Meyer performing the Bach cello suites can attest, there's a lot that can be done with the instrument. On Tarantella, we get a fascinating collection of more than a dozen 19th- and 20th-century miniatures arranged or written for double bass. Performed gorgeously by British double bassist Duncan McTier, joined by pianist Kathron Sturrock, the music made during this recital will dramatically change your perception about the double bass. From the flowing grace McTier injects into his arrangement of Kreisler's Liebesleid to his spirited bow attack on Reinhold Gliere's Tarantella Opus 9 No. 2, the technique is faultless. The bass sounds perfectly suited to these bonbons, and the recorded sound is excellent. Between the pretty music and the accomplished playing, this creative disc really is a knockout. --Jason Verlinde

This is an excellent CD of lyrical bass music. The rendition of Rachmaninov's Vocalise in G minor and the Kreisler are particularly fine (although I would have perhaps taken the Vocalise a notch slower). The Tarantella of the final track is a superb dispay of musical virtuosity.

Fabulous Playing.......2003-12-23

As a musician myself, i can honestly say this is the best bass playing i have ever heard. As said in somebody else's review the technique is faultless and the musicality is amazing! The Tarentella itself is inspiring to other musicians whether they be bass players or not. He takes full advantage of the music actually written for the bass and im sure people will be absolutely inspired by the way Duncan McTier plays the bass. This is a perfect stocking filler for all classical music lovers.

This is an amazing disc, and by far one of the best bassist CD's ever released. McTier's interpretation of Bottesini is without peer, especially "Romanza Patetica" - the most sensitive and nuance filled interpretation I've ever heard.

His choice of pieces is also interesting, including Rossini's "Une Larme pour Basse" - a simple and understated piece overlooked by virtuosos in search of fast and/or high register playing. Unless you're looking for a disc with McTier's take on the most popular virtuoso showpieces, you will not be disappointed with this. It's a well thought out and executed program of well and lesser known works.

Great CD.......2002-10-25

Of all of the performances at the International Society of Bassists convention in 2001, Mr. McTier's was probably the closest to "flawless". It was a very humbling experience and this CD was a very satisfying follow up to my first Duncan McTier hearing. The only problem other than the lack of "meat" in the sound in the loud passages, is that the music tends to be very "safe"-in other words there isn't much of the music "between the lines", but the CD is still a wonderful addition to any bass CD library.

An excellent collection of Prokofiev's major works.......2007-06-25

I was introduced to the music of Prokofiev through his symphonies, and was immediately drawn in by the beauty of his music. So I bought this box set without listening to any other of his works first.

I was not disappointed in any way. Here, collected together very nicely, are a large portion of Prokofiev's works. Many of the performances here are reissues of past recordings, mostly from the '80s and early '90s. There are many imminent performers here, such as Mstislav Rostropovich (Prokofiev was a good friend and teacher of Rostropovich, and dedicated his Cello concerto to him after hearing him play), Seiji Ozawa, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and many other excellent musicians and orchestras. Rest assured that these are some of the best performances available of the works included.

The recording quality is unquestionable. Most of the performances are digital, clean, and rich (no distorted, thin, distant, or weak recordings here!). The only disc which contains poor recordings is the Archive Recordings disc, which is understandable as the recordings are very old (including Prokofiev playing or singing some of his own works and some works by other composers).

As for range of compositions included, we have here a magnificent collection of Prokofiev's most important music (and some of his rarer pieces as well): his entire symphonies and concertos, a selection of his instrumental music (including violin, flute, cello, and piano sonatas), many of his stage works including Romeo & Juliet, Alexander Nevsky, the Prodigal Son, The Steel Step, The Love for Three Oranges, Lieutenant Kije, etc., and an entire recording of his War and Peace opera.

One inclusion that I find somewhat baffling is that of 4 different versions of Peter and the Wolf: English, German, Spanish, and French. I would have been content with just the English, but I suppose listeners from other countries can benefit from the other languages.

I really can think of no better way to start a collection of Prokofiev's music. Here you can get his major works, and for a decent price (used copies can be a very good deal). If you are interested in the music of Prokofiev, or in 20th century classical music, this set is a great way to get a thorough introduction to Prokofiev. Highly recommended!

I think it's needless to say how famous are S. Prokofiev and his works. I just want to give some details about this collectible gem.

The selection of works for this CD is a wonderful assortment of works spanning several centuries. The Massenet "Meditation from Thais" is the best version that I've heard on bass. The Koussevitzky and Bottesini works are very well played, but not especially unique. The Swan ought to make most cellists jealous, and any works by Sperger played by Mr. Trumpf are probably going to be the best interpretations you'll find.
