5 out of 5 stars A Listening Treat .......2007-03-08

What a delight to listen to this collection of pure Rutter ! The melodic sounds of the Cambridge Singers bring me such pleasure The sheer joyfulness of this music is to me a religious experience of such depth It is superb and will lift ones spirits instantly. highly recommended to all lovers of the English contemporary choral sound and scene,____ not to be missed

5 out of 5 stars Be Thoy My Vision CD.......2007-02-19

My husband sang many of these John Rutter compositions with his church choir, and this CD is perfect since the choir is directed by Rutter, singing his own music. If you love religious music, this will bring tears to your eyes, the choir is "that" perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Really good, but don't listen to it all at once........2007-01-07

I really liked this CD. It really showcases Rutter's knack for religious choral music. Perhaps it helps that I have sung some of his stuff with various groups. However, as with any similar compiliation, the composer's sameness of style and motif becomes apparent. This repetition can become boring on the third or fourth listening. On the other hand, this makes a great reference tool for any choral director or performer. Buy it, however, it's worth it, but don't listen to it all at once.

5 out of 5 stars A must for choral music fans.......2006-09-19

Simply fabulous, 10/10. These are all Rutter-composed pieces, directed by Rutter himself. If you have any interest in religious choral music at all, you must get this album! One of the highlights of my musical life was attending a concert of a University of Maryland choir in which my mom sang, that featured Rutter as a guest conductor. Listening to this album is almost as good! ;-) There are too many good pieces to start naming all of my favorites, but these are some of the best known ones: "Open Thou Mine Eyes", "A Gaelic Blessing", "All Things Bright and Beautiful", "As the Bridegroom to His Chosen", "For the Beauty of the Earth", and "The Lord Bless You and Keep You".

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection of Rutter's hymns.......2005-11-22

I sought a recording of Rutter's beautiful hymn, "Wings of the Morning", after we sang this lovely tune in church and this was the only CD I could find that contained it.

This collection includes many of Rutter's church hymns recorded over a period of 20 years performed by The Cambridge Singers, a group of Brits, that are conducted by the composer. Ergo, these performances must be considered definitive.

Many of Rutter's popular hymns are included here. "O be joyful to the Lord" and "All things bright and beautiful", a popular children's hymn done here by adults, follow "Wings of the morning" on tracks 5-7. Others you may have performed in church represented here are "O clap your hands", "Lord make me an instrument of your peace", "For the beauty of the earth", "Look at the world" and "The Lord bless you and keep you" among the 21 assembled hymns.

While The Cambridge Singers, on their Web site, identify themselves principally as an a capella group, I was pleased when I received this CD to find all the hymns supported by a full orchestra, the esteemed City of London Sinfonia. The renditions are uniformly lovely although some listeners may find the singing a bit on the white side lacking brilliance and individuality. Everything is done in keeping with Rutter's score markings and style.

The recording tends to be a little variable given the 20-plus year difference in performances. The most recent copyright listing is 2003, the same year "Wings of the morning" was published. I don't hear an appreciable difference in that recording than the others but still hear some age in older works.

If you seek a Rutter hymn collection you can't go wrong here. You have wonderful English performers mated to the composer in his more popular works. I'd recommend this without reservation to anyone seeking this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Make a joyful noise!.......2007-03-13

It's amazing how hearing these settings can help you to understand the Psalms more fully than simply reading them might permit. This performance is clear and precise, and in no way lacks emotion or expression. I have always found these settings to be very moving, and King's College certainly conveys their power. A must buy for those who long for traditional settings, and who find modern "religious" music to be tiresome and unimpressive.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted........2007-01-03

An escape from "modern christian" music. These are the words of the Psalms set to music, sung in a cathedral by angelic voices. This is what Heaven's music sounds like I'm sure!

5 out of 5 stars Analog recording superior.......2005-11-10

This is a fantastic recording from I believe 1968 when the King's Choir was led by Willcocks. In my opinion, these older analog recordings are sharper and more distinct -- you can actually hear individual boys and parts. Perhaps that has more to do with engineering and placement of microphones than digital vs. analog. But the bottom line is this is a vintage recording and is as good as it gets.

5 out of 5 stars High comfort level.......2004-11-07

I would surely like to obtain a complete collection of all psalms by this choir. For years I have looked, searched, for this collection which I heard as a child played every sunday in South America. A great collection, ageless and timeless something have and play in the home for upliftment and inspiration even if you are not a religous person. Endless stars ****************************

3 out of 5 stars Oldie But a Goodie.......2003-03-28

Had this music been recorded digitally, it would have been beyond sublime. Alas, it still has an analog sound to it, despite the remastering. Nonetheless, it is worth the purchase (though for a better recording of the 46th Psalm, check out the Choir of Christ's Hospital recording of it).

I bought this album for Thomas Canning's "Hymn" after hearing the piece in the play "Worksong: Three Views of Frank Lloyd Wright". During the show, it was used in such a haunting fashion that listening to it along with the on stage action was enough to bring shivers to your body and goosebumps to your skin. 4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Muiscal Rendition of the Psalms.......2004-04-19

To some extent, the title of this collection PSALMS FOR THE SOUL is a bit oxymoronic. The psalms that are set to music in this collection are from the Bible, and therefore all psalms from scripture would be psalms for the soul, so to speak. I would imagine that the person who came up with the title was trying to market the recording to a broader public than just those who would purchase a religious CD and thought it would be catchy. But I digress and should not poke fun of the people of Naxos who do a tremendous service to classical music lovers by providing a wide variety of music at affordable prices.

This collection contains musical settings of the psalms. Some of the settings are anthems from the Anglican tradition. Other settings are more liturgical stemming from the Benedictine monastic tradition. Some of the settings are contemporary, others traditional. The Choir of St. John's under the direction of Noel Edison and organist Michael Bloss, performs the pieces with both beauty and reverence.

This collection is relaxing. It makes wonderful background music while concentrating and could also be used as in prayerful reflective settings as well.

Rutter's Requiem, his first composition written without being commissioned, is a convincing affirmation of Christian doctrine pertaining to death and eternal life. It is also a substantial and sincere work that strives to be widely appealing while preserving a spiritual context centered around themes of light and consolation. Highlights include "Out of the Deep," its modal tune and harmonies giving it the flavor of a spiritual, and the wonderfully gentle and restful 23rd Psalm. Rutter personalizes his Requiem by adding movements not traditionally part of the Requiem Mass--passages from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, for instance--and this proves to be an effective strategy. The Cambridge Singers are superb as usual, and soloist Caroline Ashton steals the show with her heavenly Pie Jesu. --David Vernier

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Lux aeterna.......2005-10-05

This recording of the Cambridge Singers has them recording pieces composed by their own director, John Rutter. Rutter's Requiem has become one his most widely-recorded pieces, with literally dozens of versions available internationally. This was recorded at one of the Cambridge Singers' favourite venues, the Great Hall of University College School, London, in 1986. Here they are joined by the City of London Sinfonia, and feature sopranos Caroline Ashton and Donna Deam.

      --Music--
This Requiem was written in 1985. In Catholic liturgy, a requiem is a Mass for the Dead, and as such involves strong tones both of mourning and loss as well as elements of hope and eternal life as reflected in Christian belief. Rutter states that, like Brahms and Faure, there are elements that depart from the traditional lines of a Catholic requiem. Rutter takes some of the texts from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Both the first and second movements, Requiem aeternam and 'Out of the Deep', set very dark, low, sombre tones. The use of strings at the beginning of 'Out of the Deep' is very effective, together with funeral-dirge like vocals. This contrasts greatly with the Pie Jesu, light and spiritual. The Sanctus is almost playful in aspect, and the Agnus Dei and Lux aeterna draw the listener higher and higher into the fullness of expectation of God's presence.

In addition to the Requiem, Rutter's setting of Psalm 121 (I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills) is included here, as a setting for mixed choir and orchestra. It is a wonderful, full and melodious setting, with strong instrumentation and strong singing complementing each other.

      --Liner Notes--
The notes include an introduction to the CD by Rutter very briefly the outline of a requiem. Lyrics are included, and where the original is in Latin, an English translation is provided. There is no information on the performers of the Cambridge Singers, no description of the group, nor biographical information about John Rutter.

      --John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

      --The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.

This is a truly beautiful work.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Awe Inspiring Music.......2001-08-28

After hearing a friend play this music in his office next to mine, I had to run out and buy a copy. It is so beautiful. At first I mistakenly bought a recording made by a different choir. It wasn't the same. I had to go back and get this one. The Cambridge Singers and the London Synphonia perform this work beautifully. The oboe in "The Lord is My Shepherd" is numinous. I'm entranced by it. It soothes my soul. This music is wonderful. I couldn't help but get more of John Rutter, but this one is still my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars John Rutter: Truly the Master!.......2000-08-01

This has to be one of the most moving musical pieces that I have ever had the privilege of performing. Rutter's music transcends mere notes. I believe that his music is blessed directly by God Himself. There has been no other choral composer like him in the 20th century. "Requiem" is another stunning piece of work in that it tells a story of life and death. Rutter's genius lies in the way he fashions the melody of the song with the words to give them full meaning. With the Catholic Latin text of the Requiem along with english text, Rutter fashions the view of life after death for the Christian and the hope of eternal life in Christ.

"Pie Jesu" and "The Lord is My Shepherd" are beautiful melodies and messages that give you peace and send shivers down your spine! "Sanctus" is incredible in it's tonal and melodic structure. "Agnus Dei" is gothic and dark in tone. All come together excellently to create a masterpiece. As a bonus, one of Rutter's other compositions "I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes" is included. Another example of Rutter's beautiful melodies wrapped around a wonderful Bible text. I can't recommend this recording enough!

5 out of 5 stars My Most Favorite Sacred Music.......1999-12-23

Rutter's Requiem is one of the most movingly beautiful works in the modern canon of sacred music. I have conducted, sung and listened to this music numerous times, and it always sends chills down my spine. The Cambridge Singers render Rutter's compositions flawlessly. It does not get better than this.

      5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......1999-03-31

Rutter will join the ranks of composers whose names endure. Having the privilege of performing this work under the conduction of Mr. Rutter himself (though certainly not this recording of it!), hidden among the chorus though I was, I can say that it was an experience of a lifetime. I can also say that you will surely find listening to this recording a similarly moving experience regardless of your religious affiliation.

This complete 12-disc survey of The Psalms of David from St. Paul's Cathedral is both a remarkable historical record of Anglican chant at its finest and an astonishing musical experience. Contained here are all 150 psalms in their traditional English garb from the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, with revised or entirely new musical settings as published in The New St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, edited by the choir's musical director John Scott, itself a revision of the 1875 Cathedral Psalter. As such, these recordings represent the very backbone of the Anglican liturgy, but even a casual listener will be in no doubt that they also offer music that is both contemplative and richly varied when removed from its liturgical context.

The art of "pointing"--or setting--psalm texts has been essayed by many English composers, from William Croft through the Wesleys and William Boyce in earlier times to the great flowering in the late 19th century under Stainer and Barnby, with further contributions from Parry, Stanford, Elgar, Howells, and a host of choirmasters and organists, including Sir David Willcocks and John Scott himself. All are represented here. Recorded throughout in the vast acoustic of their cathedral, the St. Paul's choristers enunciate the words precisely, backed by inventive though unobtrusive organ accompaniment. Taken individually, it's possible to isolate moments when the choir seem to drag their feet or fail to give due weight to the words (Psalm 125, "They that put their trust in the Lord," seems far too subdued, for example), and the massive Psalm 119 is awkwardly split across discs 10 and 11, but overall this set is nothing less than a document of invaluable cultural and musical significance. --Mark Walker

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Recordings.......2007-06-11

In our view the changes in pointing, and excellent selection of chants, give deeper meanings to the Psalms than those achieved in the "standard?" Parish Psalter.

We found great Spirituality and a wonderful sense of Worship whilst listening to this set. This is often sacrificed for brilliance of musical performance in other recordings.

Unfortunately the "St.Paul's Psalter" is not available (June 2007) but we are told that a new print run may happen within 12 months. This would be a most valuable companion to the recordings when and if it becomes available.

        4 out of 5 stars A- for effort.......2006-02-23

This grand undertaking deserves high praise, and I'm struck, listening to chant after chant, how much Anglican chant as it used to be until the changes of the 70s was one of the great Victorian contributions to English life and art. For anyone who wants to hear almost the entire repertoire of Anglican chant deployed in singing the whole book of Psalms, this is an unrivalled source. It is wonderful, too, to hear the Coverdale translation: you realize what the churches have lost by abandoning the proper & regular singing of the Psalms. So one is immensely grateful to Hyperion for putting out this recording. It's not perfect, though.

The rhythmic pacing, though a little slow for my taste, is steady and sensitive, the diction clear, and the organ accompaniment superb (Providing an expressive accompaniment to a choir singing in 4-part free rhythm, and improvising descants to the melody at the same time, isn't easy). And of course there's the cavernous acoustic of St. Paul's, very impressive in the more thunderous psalms. Unfortunately, though, the "forward" style favored for the St. Paul's boys produces a sound that's unpleasantly chesty in the lower registers and reedy in the higher ones. The poorly integrated choral sound caused by this kind of voice-production can be downright unpleasant for anyone used to, or trained in, the classic English choral style. In fact, one has to wonder why this choir was chosen for such a huge project: even allowing for the near-universal decline in standards of vocal training for boys in England, better sounds than this can still be heard.

5 out of 5 stars What can you say?.......2003-01-03

I almost hate to criticize this terrific thing. After all, where else can you get all 150 Psalms in a single collection sung by one of the world's great choirs?

How much do I like it? I bought it *twice*. I originally bought all the CDs separately, before they came out with a single boxed set. They were stolen from my car (and, God willing, maybe they converted some poor thief to Anglican Cathedral Music and got him into church). After they were stolen, I immediately bought them again.

One of the great pleasures of life is listening to the Morning and Evening Psalms while driving to and from work, and making listening a regular feature of Morning and Evening Prayer.

So what's the criticism? The sound is a bit muddy, so the words can be rather difficult to understand without reading along (which is a real problem when driving), and personally, I prefer the Psalter from the 1979 BCP instead of the old one, from the Great Bible. But that's unreasonable. They ARE a British choir after all. Those are the only criticisms.

Anyhow, if you have a taste for choral cathedral music, this is genuinely indispensible. St. Paul's has given the world a great blessing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choir, Excellent Soloist.......2002-01-28

If you want to hear the sound of a very fine boy soloist, I can recommend this recording to you heartily. I must agree with the other reviewer that, of all the conventional (i.e. not scholarly) performances of Allegri's "Miserere" I have ever heard, this one is the very best. Jeremy Budd's beautiful voice simply soars on those high notes, and he hits the high C dead on. I have never heard another treble do as well on this piece. Budd's vocal talent is also on full display in "Ye Now Are Sorrowful" -- simply beautiful. The rest of the music is all lovely; the choir is in good form as always.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing Miserere!.......2001-02-06

This is the most fantastic recording of Allegri's "Miserere mei Deus" that I have ever heard, and the rest of the album is just as spectacular.

5 out of 5 stars Both an excellent performance and an interesting selection.......2001-02-04

Every now and then, a cathedral chorister appears with a such a refined and musical voice that the director of music says "I'll have to make a CD of this one." One such chorister in the early 1990s was Jeremy Budd, who was particularly fortunate to be in the Choir of St. Paul's Cathedral, meaning that his recording could appear on the Hyperion label.

"Hear My Prayer" is therefore a showcase for Budd, in that most of the works in the programme feature a treble solo of some description. The title work (and opening track) by Mendelssohn is better known to millions as the piece containing "O for the wings of a dove," and the rendition here is about as good as I've heard. Any former cathedral chorister that has sung this may admit to needing nerves of steel for the solo part: it occupies most of the piece and can easily sound shoddy if it is not sung with faultless intonation and expression. Budd exhibits those characteristics to perfection, however: he positively revels in the vast acoustics of St. Paul's, and is supported ably by the rest of the choir in what is a rivetting and beautiful performance. Visitors to the cathedral during 1991 must surely have been spellbound when this was on the music list!

The other awe-inspiring treble solo on the disc is the much-touted Allegri "Miserere." Since hearing recordings of this by A Sei Voci and the Taverner Consort, with their scholarly editions of the work, the version recorded here sounds somewhat bland, and it is a shame to point out to listeners that the top Cs in the solo sections are pure fiction: Allegri certainly didn't write them. That said, Jeremy Budd was obviously both willing and able to supply such high notes for this recording - they are spine-chilling and accurately placed.

The rest of the programme is something of a curiosity to me: as I have said, most of the works feature a treble solo; not all do, however. Tavener's majestic but seldom-heard setting of Psalm 121, "I will lift up mine eyes," is scored for full chorus throughout. The only reason I can see for its appearance on this disc is that it was written for the St. Paul's Cathedral Choir and had in fact received its first performance (by them) a matter of months before the recording was made. Other items are Harvey's "Come, Holy Ghost," a very impressive and striking adaptation of the familiar plainchant hymn (written for Martin Neary and the Winchester Cathedral Choir); "A Feast Song for St Cecilia" by Bernard Rose (formerly musical director of Magdalen College, Oxford) which is even more striking in its strange harmonic language; "The ways of Zion do mourn" by Michael Wise, for treble and bass soloists (one of the first anthems to be performed at St. Paul's after it was re-built following the Great Fire of London in 1666); an excerpt from Brahms' ever-popular "German Requiem"; and the Evening Service in G by Stanford, including a ravishing treble solo in the "Magnificat" and a similarly-written bass solo in the "Nunc Dimittis," one of Stanford's finest such works (and beautifully represented here). Everything is wonderfully sung - and aided by the cathedral's unique resonance, the whole disc is positively thrilling.

So, a boy treble's showcase that touches upon the history of his home cathedral and includes some of the most ravishing music in the church's repertoire, with at least one premiere recording along the way. This is a great record and a 'must' for all devotees of cathedral music: even if you have dozens of Allegri recordings and yet more copies of "O for the wings," this excellent recording in true Hyperion tradition will appear to outdo them all.
