Customer Reviews:
Excellent Performances!.......2002-11-10
As a trombonists, sometimes hearing solos over piano accompaniment gets stale. Hearing trombone and organ play Morceau Symphonique is a refreshing change! The organ has many textures as opposed to piano's one clank-clank texture. All the pieces on this set are worth listening to over and over. If you're a trombonist, buy this CD! If you're an organist looking for a different sound to organ accompanying, buy it also! How often do you see a combination like this?

Great CD.......2002-05-20
This is a great CD that showcases two instruments that are often overlooked in solo work. The trombone and organ blend remakabley well and Trudel does a supurb job of showing off the instrument.
Superb display of the trombone's performance capabilities.......2001-08-23
The Art of the Trombone presents a tremendous display of the capacity that the trombone holds for solo repertoire. Alan Trudel is certainly one of the world's most talented performers of the trombone, and Patrick Wedd's organ accompaniment provides a sound that is seldom heard with trombone. While the literature presented on the cd may lack the diversity provided by cds such as the London Trombone Sound and some of Lindberg's, I am thouroughly satisfied with the outcome that has been achieved, it certainly fulfilled the producer's desire to illustrate the trombone's abilities as an eloquent and expressive instrument. This cd is an excellent representation of the capacities of a solo trombone, and I would recommend it to anyone with the slightest interest in low brass instrumental work.

Customer Reviews:
Well Worth Acquiring.......2005-06-27
Twenty-five years ago I bought a LP of Rubbra's second symphony and found, after several listens, I really enjoyed his composition. Now, in middle age, my inclinations have increasingly gone to modern composers. Based upon reviews, I bought this set last month from Amazon and it has rarely been out of the CD player since. Rubbra reminds me of 20 year old scotch, a taste that must be acquired but the benefits are so many. His later symphonies are very Brucknerian in dimensions and fascinating. Chandos has, again, done a marvelleous job with the recording and Richard Hickox (who did a spendid job with the Vaughan Williams symphonies) also excels. This CD box now resides in honoured position next to my heavily used sets of symphonies by Arnold Bax, Eduard Tubin, and Gustav Mahler.
A major British symphonist.......2003-11-17
Edmund Rubbra's symphonies received a very mixed reception in their time. Some listeners found their contrapuntal logic absolutely riveting, and complimented Rubbra on making them fall in love with music again. Others, however, found them too single-minded and rather drably orchestrated, comparing them to reinforced concrete or brown wallpaper. Over the years, however, the musical language became more flexible in its sequence and warmer in its harmony. Strict thematic logic is combined in the later symphonies with many a wayward shift in tempo and timbre; it is the combination of logic and freedom (without the logic the freedom would produce incoherence) that makes these works so human and so endlessly rewarding for a listener who is sufficiently sympathetic to the idiom (which is akin to that of Vaughan Williams and Finzi).
These performances do not entirely supersede the Lyrita recordings of the 70s (particularly of the 7th and 8th Symphonies). Hickox's direction of the Fifth is, however, even better than the classic recording by Barbirolli; it is the first recording, in my view, that makes the final epilogue convincing. The high quality of both playing and recording, and Hickox's complete understanding of the musical idiom, make this set worthy of unhesitating recommendation.
Truly a Giant of a Composer.......2003-10-22
This is music. This is truly ground breaking symphonies. There is power in every measure. Rubbra was truly a 20th Century Giant. He is in the same class as Elgar. All others of his day were mere imitators, lighweights; unable to come near the heights that he climbed. When you hear these recordings you are standing in the presence of greatness. The music is performed with enthusiasm, skill and daring. Richard Hickox knows how to inspire his band of Welshmen. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales is a true world class symphony orchestra. This is music. This set must be owned.
Rubbra Will Reward.......2003-01-08
I first came across Rubbra a year and a half ago. While in the Dublin Public Library leafing through the CDs I saw a name I hadn't seen nor heard of before. The Symphonies were the 1st and 3rd on another the Lyrita label. Since then I bought Hickox's rendition. I remember first hearing the music: tuneful romanticism was notably absent; but a strong unrelenting quality like an overbearing salesman first tapping, then knocking, then pounding came to my ears. The themes came streaming, constantly mutating, ever advancing, morphing over again on itself, still surging ahead. His music never rests: it is a staunch, granite dynamism. Over time, I have really come to regard Rubbra as a generally ignored genius. His music may be dry compared to the high melodies of Romantic music; but it is a dryness that one learns to cultivate like developing a taste for a good complex wine, where a myriad of complentary flavors enduring pleasantly on the palate is for what one yearns. To really appreciate Rubbra you have to appreciate his developmental mastery; and to do that you have to get him in your head, which will take more than one listening. Don't be daunted if you like him only somewhat after one listening. After getting the music in your head you will be able to step back and see the grand structure of his music, something truly awe inspiring. Give him some patience and he will reward.
A Desert Island Set.......2001-09-28
I was fortunate to purchase this set in London roughly a month ago. Suffice it to say that it has rapidly become my favorite set of 20th century symphonies (a lofty statement, but I really love this music). The symphonies are lyrical but tautly constructed, easy on the ear but intellectually challenging. Rubbra's symphonies don't really sound like anybody else's, but I'd portray them as a cross between Walter Piston's intelligence and Vaughan Williams's lyricism. Not much dissonance, but enough ear-tickling sonorites to make it interesting from the start of #1 to the end of #11. Great performances, great recording. All in all, a set to treasure.

Howard Hanson is one of America's great mid-century composers. His music, like that of Roy Harris, draws its character from the plains, from the pioneer blood that settled that part of the country. Here we have two major symphonies, a piano concerto, and a tone-poem, "Mosaics". These works are at the heart of American Romanticism; his melodies are distinct and tonal, his writing formal. He's not as idiosyncratic as Roy Harris or as buoyant as Copland and his music never went into other areas of 20th- century experimentation. But his symphonies, particularly the Fifth, belong in every collection. --Paul Cook

Wonderfully attractive and compelling music.......2002-08-20
This music is fabulous! It absolutely compels one's attention, with its power, directness, and colour. While the thematic and harmonic material is definitely contemporary, these elements are rhytmically and formally framed in recognisable structures. This music holds the listener from beginning to end. Don't miss Holmboe's symphonies!!!
Vagn Holmboe stands next to Shostakovich and Prokofieff........1998-10-10
Vagn Holmboe is one of the top composers of the 20th Century. His music speaks to us, not with a lot of noise or intellectual mind games that so many "modern" composers try to pass off on us as "music", but he speaks to us through emotion, the calling card of great music. He speaks to us as Tchaikovsky, Mahler, and Shostakovich speaks to us. Starting with Symphony No. 1 he makes us sit up in our chairs, knowing that we are going to be in for something special. With the final note of Symphony no. 13, we realize that his recent passing will be missed by those who love great music. Vagn Holmboe's music is not the music of the "now" but the music of humanity. The Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and Owain Arwel Hughes give wonderful performances of each symphony and the BIS sound is never better than in these recordings. If you want 20th Century Music that stands alongside the best of what classical music has to offer, you can't go wrong with Vagn Holmboe's Symphonies.

Reverent Rubbra.......2000-12-13
A student of Cyril Scott (1879-1970), who qualified both as a composer of concert-music and an adept of Prisca Theologia (or "the New Age"), symphonist Edmund Rubbra (1901-1986) appears to have inherited a mystical, even a slightly cranky, bent from his teacher. Rubbra found his way back to the semblance of orthodoxy by becoming a Catholic just after World War II. Yet his Catholicism boasted a noticeably offbeat flavor through assimilating not only the teleo-biologism of Teilhard de Chardin but the rather pagan-tinged transcendentalism of the seventeenth century "Cambridge Platonists." When Rubbra decided to cast his Ninth Symphony (1972) in the form of a choral-orchestral Passion, his intellectual penchants all but guaranteed that the result would elude custom in one manner or another. And it did. The full title of the work is Symphony No. 9, "Sinfonia Sacra," Opus 140 ("The Resurrection"). It calls for soprano, contralto, and baritone as well as chorus and orchestra, and it plays for three-quarters of an hour. After a brief orchestral prelude, the baritone sings "Eli, eli, lama sabachthani?" ("My God, hast thou forsaken me?"), followed by Christ's commendation of his own spirit to the Father. The orchestra then develops the melodic material by itself, leading into Rubbra's settings of the Latin hymn "Crux Fidelis" and the Lutheran chorale "Almighty Lord we pray thee" for full forces. These episodes constitute the "First Movement" of this symphony which, however, plays continuously with one exception. The "Second Movement" commences with Gospel narration by the contralto, who sings of the discovery of the empty tomb in recitative, with elaborate orchestral commentary. Rubbra fashions the conclusion of this part of the Ninth on the Latin hymn "Resurrexi," sung as a vigorous fugato with trumpet fanfares to underscore the "Alleluias" and pointilliste contributions from celesta and glockenspiel. The "Third Movement" ends with the "Regina Caeli" and "Abide with Us." At this point, a brief spoken passage presages the "Fourth Movement." A substantial episode for orchestra alone is followed by the appearance of Jesus and his final anastasis. The "Sinfonia Sacra" concludes on "Viri Galilei" and "They Blessing Upon Us." The music remains for the most part in slow tempi - lento seems to have been Rubbra's favorite designation - but this is appropriate to the topic. The Ninth certainly stands apart from Rubbra's eight other purely instrumental symphonies, being perhaps less symphonic than those and more like an oratorio. As a composer for choral voices, Rubbra creates music reminiscent of that of Vaughan Williams or Finzi or Howells. The latter's "Hymnus Paradisi" and "Missa Sabrinesis" often come to mind. The music contains many beauties, but they require time and patience to reveal themselves. Although there's no competition either for the "Sinfonia" or for the accompanying "Morning Watch," the performances under Hickox and his Welsh musicians seem first rate.

Andrzej Panufnik (b. 1914) is one of Poland's greatest composers of symphonies. His music has ranged across most of the fads of tonality and atonality of this century, but at the heart of it is a powerful sense of unity. His Sinfonia Sacra (1963) is, so far, his masterpiece. It's a mix of strong nationalism and Christian mysticism. It also begins and ends with the most incredible brass choirs you'll ever hear. His Arbor Cosmica, or The Cosmic Tree, (1983) is a loose twelve-tone work for twelve strings- -it's completely different from Sinfonia Sacra, but it also represents Panufnik's range of inventiveness. --Paul Cook

Customer Reviews:
A nice sampler of Hanson at a good price.......2000-09-05
Any fan of Hanson's romantic compositions will enjoy this 4 disc set. Schwartz and the Seattle Symphony more than ably perform these varied works. Disc 1 is probably the best of the four, not only because it contains the better-known Romantic and Nordic Symphonies, but also because of the inclusion of the "Elegy" to Koussevitsky, a sad but deeply romantic work. On disc 2, you have got to listen to the 2nd Movement of the 3rd Symphony, arguably, the most romantic of all of Hanson's works, and brilliantly performed by Schwartz et al. The Merry Mount Suite, Mosaics, and the Piano Concerto are the most enjoyable performances on discs 3 and 4. If you like romantic classical music, then this set would make a nice addition to any collection.
