Customer Reviews:
The Maestro.......2005-07-25
Segovia was and always will be The Maestro. He was, as other reviewers say, the pioneer of modern classical guitar. To say that he has been somehow surpassed and passed by, as one previous reviewer seems to think is pure rubbish. To say that others have followed in his footsteps and become greats as well, is fact.
Music is always open to interpretation. Segovia was a great player and to understand the history of the classical guitar one must have listened to Segovia. He created the yardstick by which others are now measured.
This set not only includes great works played by the Maestro, it also includes Segovia speaking of his own life with the guitar. It is worth having along with other, more modern, gifted players such as Williams, Bream, Parkening and others who followed in the Maestro's footsteps.
Has anyone ever created melodies like this from a guitar?.......2003-07-21
Okay, my classical experience is highly limited, having been raised on a healthy diet of Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and other blazing rock guitarists. But that doesn't mean I can't recognize a powerful guitarist when I see it, and Andres Segovia is just that. Sure you'll find your share of faster, more energetic playing, but you won't find any guitarist (Robert Johnson probably. George Harrison, maybe) in blues or rock that plays with as much melody, texture, and sheer, tear-jerking, beauty. And even if you have, guess what? They weren't the first to do it, and they weren't doing as far back as the 1920s. (Kicking it until the grand old age of 104) He is one of the first truly great guitarists, a virtuoso long before Satriani and Vai, playing classical on guitar long before anyone else, and playing it better then anyone else. This is him, completely solo and absolutely out of this universe in his playing. If you want to play guitar like the greats, then you can't go another day without this in your collection, deserving of a spot on your wall with Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robert Johnson, and all the imitators that followed him!
The Anton Rubinstein of Guitarist.......2003-06-15
Musically, it's not just guitar music that he is offering: note the exquisite emotion patterns, the languor and the nostalgia and his sighs...it's most soothing and consolating.
Technically, the subtleties and the phenomenon could partly be attributed to his insistence on the use of the fleshy part, instead of the hard part of his thumb. Like Arrau and Horszowski on the piano or Menuhin on the violin: they always stuck to the hardest way aiming at the best result.
The remastered sound is wonderful. I'm not particularly keen about the narrative part though.
I AGREE.......2003-02-21
Segovia was the greatest classical guitarist that ever lived and always WILL be the greatest that ever lived, for he was the ROCK on which the classical guitar was practically founded! These 3 CD's of his most treasured pieces cut straight through the heart with GREAT brilliance and virtuosity- Words cannot express his mastery of the instrument. I especially liked the autobiography on the fourth CD- VERY thrilling to hear the maestro's voice- In Spanish AND in English. This is a MUST HAVE for the serious classical guitarist-
this once was a great recording........2002-11-10
I totally agree with the fact that every classical guitarist
owes great respect to Segovia, but the reason I gave this recording such a low rating is a simple matter of evolution. Unlike instruments like the violin, the classical guitar as we know it today is a very young instrument (+-1 century). It also didn't get the recognition it deserved untill segovia came along. From that moment on, the classical guitar's popularity increased immensely, actually it is still growing. As a logical result of this growing popularity, the quality of the technique improved and interpretations were refined.
Though Segovia was incredible guitarist in his time and situation (he was the ONLY international preformer that played this instrument), it would just be irrational to claim that the dozens of great preformers later on never improved compared to segovia. It's like denying that einstein's theories are more accurate than those of Isaac Newton, because Newton was the rock on wich fysics were mostly build.
These recordings are interesting for those who would like to do some historical research on the classical guitar, but for those who just want to listen to a good preformance, I would really recommend the more recent recordings (Russel, Fisk, Sollscher,...).

Customer Reviews:
A beautifully thought-out programme and stunning playing.......2007-04-18
I bought this CD (with slight trepidation) because I was sure I would enjoy most of the music. The trepidation was only because, having discovered the inimitable Andrew Lawrence-King, I wasn't sure how the sound of the modern harp would stack up against his amazing instruments and the even more amazing range of sounds he gets from them. But I needn't have worried. Nancy Allen makes a beautiful, if mostly conventional, sound on her modern harp and her virtosity takes away one's breath. Her articulation is possibly the cleanest of any player of the modern harp I've heard and her sense of rhythmn is faultless. I'm no fan at all of modern music but I even enjoyed the two pieces by Prokofiev on this CD. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Nancy Allen.......2007-04-16
Nancy Allen is the best harpist in the world and this CD reflects that.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing sound quality and excellent performances.......2006-02-05
I haven't listened to the three audio cds all the way through, but I did listen to most of the Eine Kline Nachtmusik. I have the Phillips Duo version which I don't think is included here (It seems like they're a couple years apart), though the Phillips Duo got the coveted rosette from the Penguin Guide To Classical Music, this version on this 3CD Set, is played a little better, and it makes the Duo version sound like it's played in a wet paper sack. The sound is so darn crisp and brilliant that's it's just simply breathtaking. Get this "A Celebration" disc as fast as you can, and you'll thank me! I promise! I kind of listened to a little bit of everything, just to see if the sound quality was as good as the Mozart Serenade, and the sound quality was superb on all the pieces. There's also a bonus DVD which is very enjoyable of the Tchaikovsky Serenade and I'm forgetting the other piece, so in all your getting 4 discs. It sells here on Amazon, but I didn't check the prices it's going for, but I'll check and give you the lowest price. I just checked the used prices, and someone is selling their's for $8.00 like new, so that sounds like the bargain of bargains to me. Enjoy!!!

Customer Reviews:
Amazing sound!.......2005-12-18
If you like Renaissance music, or maybe even if you don't, you're bound to love this wonderful CD. It's one of the top 10 or so out of my collection of about a thousand. I don't have the literature that came with the CD in front of me, but if memory serves me, the NY Kammermusiker group plays Renaissance music on modern double reed instruments. While I love crumhorns &c, the sound here is even better and richer. I don't know if that's due to the instruments, the players, or both. But it doesn't matter. It's fantastic. Their Renaissance Tour of Europe disk is equally good -- one of my other top 10's.
Awesome double reed ensemble.......2005-04-25
The New York Kammermusiker is one of my favorite ensembles, and I regret that they only have released to CDs. The ensemble the following instruments in various numbers: oboe, oboe d'amore, English horn, bassoon, and contrabassoon. They have a great sound...indeed, for some of the bigger pieces, such as the Lully and Handel, they sound almost orchestral. The nuancing and phrasing of the players is very satisfying, and the selection of repertoire is very nice. The Purcell suite sounds especially sweet in this arrangement.
There is a fun, short piece by Purcell that was played on thie disc with two bassoons and contrabassoon that's a delight.
This is a great disc to introduce someone to the joys of the Baroque, or to enjoy the sounds of the double reed instruments, or simply to have something lively and fun to listen to.
Three cheers for the NYKamm. !

This time, his inspiration is Biber. But don't assume that bassist Barry Guy's follow-up to In Darkness Let Me Dwell, his utterly fascinating improv take with the Hilliard Ensemble on the songs of John Dowland, will follow the same successful formula of melancholic vocals-meets-jazz. On Celebration, the emphasis is less on lyricism than austerity and tonal colors. The album opens with Biber's "Annunciation" from the first Mystery Sonata, but then quickly breaks into new territory. And Guy's five original works, performed with baroque violinist Maya Homburger, are varied affairs, to say the least. "Immeasurable Skies" is a jagged four-movement work in which the violin's long, haunting notes are briefly shattered by noisy discord. The title work uses tape overdubs to layer violin sounds on top of each other; it sounds like a 16-minute collaboration between Tony Conrad and Arvo Pärt. Guy gets the spotlight on "Still," a bluesy showcase for his vast improv skills on the bass. The final piece here--"Breathing Earth"--was influenced by Biber and somehow brings the disc full circle. All-in-all, wonderful playing and riveting music for those with adventurous ears. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
A good example of late-century avant-guardism.......2001-02-14
Barry Guy is surely one of the most sensational musicians of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. As a composer, he works in tandem with his skills as a double-bass player to create a music that is richly inventive but daring to the point of pushing the musical envelope - at times, it becomes less like music and more of an elemental sonic utterance.
His music is of a highly improvisational character: it comes as no surprise that he has played with leading jazz ensembles, although it is worth noting that he has also recorded Purcell with early music groups! This eclectic musical mind is teamed up on this recording with Maya Homburger, a baroque violinist with a similar penchant for taking the instrument and music written for it in daring and bold new directions. The programme on the disc takes as a starting point the extraordinary sonatas of Heinrich Biber (a contemporary of Bach and Vivaldi), pairing the finest of these - number 15, "Annunciation" - with Barry Guy's "Breathing Earth" (itself based on Biber's sonata) and "Ceremony," an engrossing, beautiful and virtuosic work commissioned by Homburger for herself on violin with multi-tracked violin material.
At times, as mentioned, Barry Guy makes some powerful sounds with his bass: having seen him live, I can tell you that some of the more ear-splitting ones are achieved using more than just bowed and plucked sounds (one of his improvisations involved inserting a screwdriver between the strings of the bass and striking the handle so that it beat hard against the body of the instrument!) and this is not for the faint-hearted, even amongst fans of avant-guarde music. Indeed, this disc is only really worth purchasing if you are seriously interested in avant-guarde music: fans of Cage, Feldman, Wolff, Ferneyhough or Boulez will probably enjoy this disc the most. I would say, in concluding, that it is one of the finest examples of avant-guardism around, and in any case it is a showcase for the profoundly unique musical talent of Barry Guy.

Customer Reviews:
Wrong music for a wedding.......2005-08-29
I should have read all the selections before purchasing this--Orff's "O Fortuna"?! I'm sorry I spent money on this. Many of these selections are completely inappropriate for a wedding, unless you don't mind songs that set a dire mood. Bride's magazine's compilation and "A Brides Guide to Wedding Music" (3 CDs) had many more useful selections.
Great Classics, and not just for a Wedding.......2003-04-04
This turns out to be a fabulous compilation of musical classics, of all different moods, from lilting romance to terrifying drama. Wonderful, intelligent selection, not just the usual cliche stuff, and good sound, and should be bought for use as such a compilation, but tough to use more than a part of it directly for weddings. Some tracks have some of the best deep bass on CD, for any audiophiles. This would be a terrific CD to take to the store when trying out music systems -it has every kind of sound, from massive chorus to mighty organ to small groups. Highly recommended, for the music.
More like funeral classics.......2002-06-10
If I wasn't looking for wedding music, I think this compilation would have been fine as a standard classical music compilation. However, many of the selections sound too dire, dramatic, and depressing to be played at a wedding in any setting. There are some wedding classics (like Pachelbel's Canon, etc.), but these are sung by choirs. If you are looking for a CD to play directly for your processional, recessional, etc., I would not recommend this one.
