Album Description
RESONANCE album is a musical exploration of one musical tradition through another msuical tradition. As the title suggests, it is the intensification and enriching of a musical tone by supplementary vibration. It attempts to explore the inner stregths and beauty of different musical cultures under one roof giving a whole new experience to the listener. The inherent rhythms of the compositions are beautifully embedded within the arrangements of the quartet.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar Gods unleashed...timeless CD for rockers!.......2007-03-01

From a guitar player and audio engineer point of view...awesome and jaw dropping! My first listen to this CD affected me like the first listen to the Montrose album, times 10!
BUY this CD is my best advice. Learn every note, store it in your head, listen on the way to work, sitting at home alone....just do it.
THEN, go get Tesla's second release,The Great Radio Controversory, and do it all over again!

5 out of 5 stars No words. Simply perfection in rock........2006-12-15

I'm so excited in writing this review, more than twenty years after I did buy this album. I'm excited in writing the review for Mechanical Resonance, MECHANICAL RESONANCE, which to me is like a picture from my youth, a smell from my youth, ... it is like having again the taste of the first kiss I had in my life. MECHANICAL RESONANCE GUYS!!!!! I remember quite clearly those days, when this album came out. Instead I can't remember how many times I have listened to this one. A billion maybe! It is the soundtrack of my teen age years! This album is just one of those albums that sign a time. It is simply perfect, one note after the other, one riff after the other, one song after the other, nothing is out of place here. This album is perfection in this style. Few albums in this style we love, rock, hard rock, metal, hair metal whatever you may call this, can match this perfection. But Mechanical Resonance is up there with the best of them in the very first positions. It was a shot in the dark to me! I will never forget the first listenings! I remember quite well I immediatly thought ... Wow this is unbelievable! Mechanical Resonance, yes, is perfect. It is the "Kind of blue" of rock 'n' roll, modern hard rock I might call this. Rock with chops, more chops than the Zep or Aerosmith. It was rock 'n' roll in the era of guitar heroes when the competition in guitar was very high. The guys from Tesla won that contest through a kind of Van Halen guitar style taking back to the simple and no frills rock'n' roll. This is the album to have from those years. From any era if you want a rock album that will shake your walls and delight your ears. It will never sound dated because it is simple and sophisticated, hard and tender, anthemic and brilliant. It has that special quality of the things that you know from the very first time you listen to them, that will last. It is a perfect example of what rock should be about. No frills, great chops, great energy, simple but catchy songwriting, extremely clever arrangements, and that special sense of modernity that will never fade away in a thousand years from now. There are wonderful ballads like We're no good together, phenomenal country rock songs like Little Suzi, incredible rock anthems like Ez come Ez go, or Comin atcha live, Cover Queen. I mean. It is perfect. It is FOR SURE one of the albums I love the most FROM ANY ERA. Neither Tesla ever reached this level. Some people say The great radio controversy is better. I don't agree. "Radio" is a good album, but Mechanical Resonance is PERFECTION. Everything is perfect in this album, even the cover which exactly speaks for the music. A shot of fire, the warmth of the tubes, an electric meltdown that was going to shake the world. And it did!!!!! Lights and thunder guys, close your eyes and listen here it is one the best rock albums ever made, MECHANICAL RESONANCE!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-11-04

As only Tesla can do... What a great listen! I recommend it to anyone, To all you old time rockers, it is just as good as you remember.

5 out of 5 stars Where is this band?.......2006-08-10

Tesla is amazing, and it brings me back to my high school days! Fun stuff, and highly recommended for anyone who loves listening to good guitar and a unique voice.

5 out of 5 stars Tesla -one of the greatest bands of all time.......2006-07-21

This cd is a keeper, I'v always wonderd who that band was in my dad's cd rack and thank God that I borrowed it. I would say the highlights on this cd are Modern Day Cowboy and Rock Me To The Top even thought I'm a fan of just about the whole cd. Get this cd and get it quick!

Embracing the role of fellow spiritual seeker as well as composer, pianist Kevin Kern invites listeners to find a safe, comfortable place in their imaginations and tag along on what his CD packaging describes as a "self-guided healing visualization." For those favorably inclined toward such musical journeys of the soul, Kern proves to be a sincere and capable guide. His slowly unfolding piano works (periodically embellished with acoustic guitar, flute, strings and understated electronics) are soft, serene and, on occasion ("High above the Valley" and "Through the Veil" in particular), memorably attractive. The foil-stamped/die-cut/textured paper packaging for The Winding Path, Kern's sixth career release, is first-rate; the story line it contains, centered on the discovery of a "cauldron of healing," is a matter of personal taste. As for the music, Kern's compositions can intermittently seem a touch too sweet or simplistic, but the overall flavor is peaceful, relaxing and, considering the context, admirably refined. --Terry Wood

Album Description

Kevin Kern has become a universal name for beautiful, relaxing music. This intimate, piano-led path through nature creates a resonance of tranquility and peace for pure listening pleasure. "The Winding Path" is ideal for masage, meditation and relieving stress. Kern is joined on several tracks by top new age duo, 2002.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Quiet Time Music.......2006-11-05

I like this CD very much, it is good relaxing music.
The only thing I don't like is the fact I can't rip it into my computer - that is very annoying because that was one of the main reasons I purchased it - so I could add it to my Calm Music MP3 compliation on my computer. Because of this I won't be purchasing more of Kevin Kern's music.

5 out of 5 stars An Easy Winner.......2005-08-26

A strange thing happens every time I listen to this album - I hear the first few cuts and then there's a blur and the last cut is going by. This isn't meant as a negative, but it does point out that this is one of those albums that quickly blends into whatever I'm doing and becomes part of the environment.

Much to my surprise, Kevin Kern is a native Detroiter (there's not a lot of New Age music getting made up here). His training is classical, with a lot of mentoring by George Shearing. The combination has made him a master of improvisation, with a knack for taking the melodic path. Winding Path is his sixth album, done in 2003. It spent some 15 weeks on the charts, which is a pretty solid accomplishment.

This is a 'group' album - Pamela Copus on various woodwinds and Jeff Kinski on Guitar are the core players, (listen to the first two cuts - Touch of Love and Way of the Stream) but several others add their talents to make the album something of a surprise to those who think of Kern as a solo pianist. He also experiments a bit with sound effects and such (High Above the Valley).

I'm hesitant to say this is his best album, but once I decide to pay careful attention to it, it is certainly one of his most interesting. A lot of the work is quite subtle. I give this one an 'A' for listenability. Yet another reason to put a stereo in the woodshop.

5 out of 5 stars Real Music.......2003-06-13

"Winding Path" is a rare great album, a must-have for all who loves emotional, intelligent, comforting piano-based music... Thank you very much, Kevin, for this wunderful and timeless record.

5 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications.......2003-06-04

As a long-time fan of Kevin Kern's music, I'm excited to say that I think "The Winding Path" is his best album to date. Due to a serendipitous equipment failure just prior to the recording sessions, this album is much more acoustic than previous albums and the "canned" strings are all but gone. Kern recorded this album on an amazing Hamburg Steinway that he refers to as "God's own piano," and his passion for this instrument sings through on each piece. Joining Kern on this album are 2002 (Pam Copus does an incredible job on all of the wind instruments, and Randy supplies bells and other sounds), Jeff Kinsky on guitar, Jeremy Cohen on violin, Terence Yallop on bells on one track, and Kevin's wife, Pam, on rainstick. And then there is that piano. The combined forces produce a "great big soundscape" (Kevin's quote) that may surprise some of his fans. The music is still very gentle, soothing, and uplifting, but the feel and quality of the album is bigger and fuller. I love it! Kern says that the difference in his approach to this album is that this music will be the "heart and soul and center" of his live appearances - concert audiences are in for a real treat!

"The Touch of Love" opens the album on a rather ethereal note. The 2002-influence is really strong on this piece, and it is a truly beautiful collaboration. Pam Copus' flute has such a feeling of yearning, combined with sweet voices, and that marvelous piano (and pianist!). "The Way of the Stream" is a gorgeous guitar/ piano duet with a few additional sounds for color. "A Million Stars" is a wonderful piece that Kern created in the studio at Terence Yallop's suggestion that he "play the sky." (Pieces like this make my fingers itch!) The clarity and sparkle of the upper registers of the piano are perfect for depicting a clear night skyscape away from the lights of the city. This is definitely one of my favorite Kern pieces (not just from this album). "High Above the Clouds" begins with the sound of a thunder storm; Pam Copus comes in on Native American flute, playing a lovely, melancholy melody. Then the piano picks up the melody and develops it. The piece becomes a flute and piano duet with some background accompaniment. "Through the Veil" is a classic Kern anthem with the addition of a rhythm track. Mostly piano and guitar (with Pam on rainstick!), the melody is compelling and heartfelt - another one of my favorites on this album. My favorite track on "The Winding Path" is the title track, which features Kern on piano, Copus on flute, and the incredible Jeremy Cohen on violin. An achingly beautiful piece, this one touched me deeply each of the ten or so times I've heard it.

Bravo to Kevin Kern and company for producing a "real" standout! A guided visualization is included in the liner notes for those who are so inclined, but the music is vivid and colorful enough that you can probably produce your own daydreams to accompany it.

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Offering from Kevin Kern.......2003-06-04

"The Winding Path" is Kevin Kern's latest CD for Real Music, and what an outstanding collection of tracks is to be found on this 44 minute disc.

With far more emphasis on blending other instruments with his exquisite piano playing, this CD is quite different from his previous efforts. Long-term Kern fans need not worry, however. The additional accompanying instruments merely enhance the beauty of his piano playing, and make this one of my all-time favourite CDs.

2002 fans will be delighted by the duo's quite prominent presence on the disc. From Pamela Copus's gorgeous flute playing on tracks 1 and 10, plus harp on track 2, to Randy Copus's percussion on tracks 2, 5 and 9, it is not difficult to see why some of the tracks have a 2002 feel to them. I agree with Kathy Parson's observation that this is very evident on the first track.

All the tracks are strong on this CD, but favourites include tracks 1, 3, 8 and 10. I note that Kevin dedicates Track 3,"A Million Stars" to "all those who reach for the stars". This is likely to be a popular track with his fans, partly because it is extremely beautiful, and also because it truly is solo piano.

This CD is exceptionally well presented, and has a wonderful feel to it. The CD insert contains an introduction to guided visualisation, where the listener is invited to go on a relaxing journey whilst listening to the music.

It may be of some interest that this CD was apparently going to be originally called "Leaf, Twig and Petal". I think that the change of name was a wise move, and is more befitting of the content.

On a par with "In the Enchanted Garden", this CD is right up there in terms of melodic beauty, and way beyond it with regards presentation. Kevin is using other instruments to compliment his piano playing, and this shows a willingness to move forward with his music. It, in no way, detracts from the beauty of the lead instrument.

I give this CD my highest recommendation. It is a joy to listen to from start to finish, and it is no wonder why there seems to be great excitement surrounding this disc. Stunning.

I cannot belive I didnt discover them sooner. I had to get the CD from a used cd store because its out of print! I hadn't even known M.A.G. existed untill I started listening to internet radio. When I heard their single "Walk Away" I was amazed and wanted more. This cd is simply an excellent rock album. Maybe if they wouldnt have disbanded they could have been much more. Probably my most favorite tracks from this album are "Walk Away", "Burn", "Historypeats", "Undefined Reversion". Really though, the whole cd is awesome. Here are my track ratings...

3. Historypeats - 10/10

I can safely say I enjoyed it from the start and "Walk Away" wasn't the only favorite track I got out of this CD. Anyone who enjoys the sound of Tool, Revis or other bands that sound similar should check this out.

4 out of 5 stars M.A.G........2005-06-13

I first heard Mat At Gravity on Reign Of Fire quite some time ago. The movie featured "Burn" and "Walk Away." I was instantly hooked. Too bad few people have heard of the movie or this band. If you like Chevelle or Tool, you'll probably like this band.

4 out of 5 stars Mad at Gravity Resonance .......2005-03-21

Do you like Tool? Mad at Gravity certainly like Tool. Between their roiling polyrhythms and grrrrrrrinding, twin-guitar attack, this Southern California quintet covers the same musical ground as that prog-metal four-piece. But MaG also add an attractive conciseness: Where Tool's last album offered eight-minute mini-epics, the tunes on Resonance generally end at the three-and-a-half-minute mark. In addition to dispensing with long, complicated instrumental sequences, the radio hit "Walk Away" and "Find the Words" are more pop than prog, throwing their weight into memorable hooks and soaring, majestic choruses.

5 out of 5 stars New Band.......2005-02-16

The members beside the lead singer are forming a new band and say the new lead singers voice is incredible and have put together some great songs. The band is called Ghost in the flesh

5 out of 5 stars It's A Shame.......2005-02-06

They broke up shortly after their debut cd. It shocked the hell out of me when I found out, but hey we still have this one good cd. J.Lynn Johnston needs to hurry up and start singing again.

5 out of 5 stars why spend $30 on an album?.......2004-09-13

That is always what I ask myself when shelling out hard earned $ when the "normal" CDs run $10-15.. Here's why

    4. You Were There: I heard this track on ZTV (I think thats the name of the station) which is like Canada's progressive answer to MTV. I bought the album because of this one song that haunted me and had me watching this station out of canada way to late at night, hoping to hear it again. The line "you were the first song I ever sung..." kills me. Excellent song and song writing.
    9. Words We Never Use: Along the lines of you were there, stong lyrics and haunting. Here you get an bare bones recording that was not used previously.
    10. I Don't Like Mondays, just a fun song to sing along with on the way to work...
    11. Before We Ever Met
    15. Gold in Them Hills Caught myself singing this one yesterday and had to figure out who it was.

5 out of 5 stars Rarities is a beautiful CD worth buying.......2003-09-20

Ron Sexsmith's latest CD is amazing. It consists of songs which did not make it to his 6 other CDs, and a few old favourites rerecorded. The 16 songs on this work of beauty demonstrate once again that Ron is an amazing lyrical poet and makes beautiful melodies. I've heard a few of these songs at Ron's concerts, and was wondering when they would appear on a CD...here they are.

"We don't know why we're here
    ...
though the stars look down as if to say
    we're too late
in this world where time is everything
    we're too late, my darling"

5 out of 5 stars Great album with acoustic vibe.......2007-03-30

The album starts with the touching "Wait For Jane," peaks with the incredible "Cindy," then rides off into the sunset with "Andy Climb Down." The album has a gripping acoustic vibe that blends triumphantly with Stephen O'Reilly's vocals. A powerful performance without raucous instrumentals that is worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Best album from the band.......2007-01-10

This is by far the best album by Tammany Hall NYC. I could do a review of each track, but what's the point? Every review would be "awesome track".

If you've heard some of their other work, or more commonly, if you've heard some tammany on the tv show Scrubs, then this is definitely an album you want

    5 out of 5 stars acoustic perfection.......2006-03-31

I first heard the song "Wait For Jane" when it was used as "Wait For You" in an HBO promo for their Sunday Night lineup back in 2002. I immediately had to know who sang that song. My research led me to Tammany Hall NYC. I ordered the CD right away since it was only available on their website at the time. I was not disappointed. This disc is solid from beginning to end.

"Always On Sunday" was another song that HBO used, I believe, and it is simply amazing. I can't say enough about these guys, how they are still flying under the radar is beyond me.

I give this CD 5 stars because of the "turd factor". The "turd factor" score here is 0. Which is good. A turd is a song that is so unlistenable that it is a must skip. You can enjoy this CD from beginning to end and throw the CD remote away and let it play.

My search for their music has definitely paid off, this CD is still in my regular rotation 4 years after buying it.

Tammany Hall NYC is incredible. I own over 800 CDs and for the past 6 months haven't bought a single piece of music because nothing out there was of interest to me. Until, I heard this band on HBO. It took forever for me to figure out who they were. I bought their album immediately and it is all I listen to. They have instantly become one of my favorite bands. Like other reviewers have written, every song can stand alone, not one song sounds like the next. The music is unlike any I've ever heard before. I highly recommend this album if you're looking for something that you didn't believe was even out there.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-11-10

I absolutely LOVE this band. This is the kind of music that you not only hear but feel. To the individual who what wondering about what song was on the HBO commercial, it is called Waiting For You, which is a remake of Waiting For Jane. The entire song is the same except they replaced Jane with You in the title and lyrics. Either version is great. I only hope more people come to learn about this band.

      Album Description

Collection of early works and her first vocal compositions, originally released on LPs in the 1970s and early 1980s on her own Wizard Records. "One of my earliest pieces, `Hear What I Feel', was a self-exploratory, sensory-deprivation experimental work, designed to help me discover new sounds, delve into psychological aspects, as well as communicate with the audience on a pre-verbal level of awareness. After spending an hour in isolation with my eyes taped shut and not touching anything with my hands, I was led our into the performance space where my assistant had placed a variety of substances in six small glass dishes. As I touched the material, I tried to give an immediate vocal response to what I felt both emotionally and physically, without the benefit of visual information. I expected the shock of bringing a solitary state of mind into the heightened awareness of a performance situation to intensify my experience, and the poignancy of my `prepared' state to affect the audience. The sounds are presented here in their raw state; it is truly an experimental work with no intentional musical implications or designs. `Voice Piece: One-Note Internal Resonance Investigation' explores the color spectrum of a single pitch. Circular Song was inspired by the circular breathing technique of horn players. `Des Accords pour Teeny', an exploration of multi-phonic technique or choral singing, was dedicated to Teeny Duchamp. In much of my early work I dealt with sound as a physical presence, sculpting it, building up layers in complex constructions, letting the flow of thought and the visualization of sonic gestures direct my studio art. Voice Is the Original Instrument was both a statement of purpose and a manifesto as, through various experiments and explorations, I tried to rediscover the basic function of the voice as the first means of expression as well as to release untapped sonic material. As I gave my classically trained voice its freedom, letting it direct me toward new places and ideas, I developed what was a unique vocabulary and used those sounds to score an orchestra of layered voices."

        5 out of 5 stars Intoxicating!.......2007-03-22

When I first listened to this CD, it did very little for me. I was expecting something a bit less gentle/subtle.

But now -- about a year later -- it has become part of my nightly ritual. I start it up and let it carry me away from the day's stress and aggravations. It is really good for getting into that meditative place that feels so wonderful after a busy day.

Sometimes I will even wake up in the middle of the night and start it playing so that it fills the place with beautiful sound.

I will be looking for more compilations like this one and hope the collaborators responsible for this will be working on more recordings.

I was collared by my radio almost a year ago as Bonnie Grice spun Juliette on our local jazz station, and it was my favorite on first run-through of the album when I got it. Now, they're ALL my favorites. Eigsti's earlier album Taylor's Dream is only suggestive of this genius's mastery. Resonance deserves your fully focused attention on every track and many, many hearings. He's like a Beethoven symphony - something new to be heard in each subsequent pass. This is a man who has lived a lot of life in his scant twenty years, and it all comes out at his fingertips. AMAZING! You should have heard him with Marian McPartland - the ~seventy years difference in their ages evaporated in a flash of brilliance, beauty, and just plain fun.

        WOW! AHHHHhhhhhhh!

5 out of 5 stars Mature, inventive, phenomenal technique.......2004-09-06

I heard Eigsti for the first time yesterday at the Tanglewood Jazz Festival. My dad and I had gone to hear Marian McPartland (still a very cool musician at 86) tape her "Piano Jazz" show for NPR. We're big jazz piano fans--McCoy Tyner, Bennie Green, and lots of greats no longer with us (Bill Evans, Art Tatum)--and we adore Marian and would have gone no matter who her guest was. Eigsti blew us away. Listening to him, you would have no idea he's 19--he sounds like he's done at least twice that much living. His chops are overwhelming, but they serve his musicality and aren't the reason to listen to him. I picked up "Resonance" and have listened to it a dozen times in the last 24 hours. He did a solo version of Ivan Lins's "Love Dance" at Tanglewood, and a trio version is on this CD (good, but not as great as his solo). His own tunes are good; of the classics, "Angel Eyes" is perhaps the most innovative treatment I've heard of this already complex tune, and Corea's "Got a Match" and Sonny Rollins's "Oleo" are absolute barnburners, and on Bernstein's "Somewhere" and Mercer Ellington's "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" you'll think you're listening to someone who's played in clubs and recorded for twenty years. Astounding. Live at Tanglewood, he did "Give Me Fever" (or whatever the name of that Peggy Lee song is) and just tore up the piano. I hope that one shows up on another CD soon.

5 out of 5 stars "Wow" sums it up.......2004-04-08

This young man sizzles on the ivories along with Shifflet (Bass) and Lewis (Drums). Every song on "Resonance" takes you into a different space and the vibe is pure improvisation. I think Eigsti will introduce Jazz to a new generation. Here's a musician on the verge of breaking new sound barriers and I anticipate his next release to be even edgier. Very cool, I'm hooked.

5 out of 5 stars The one kid who can you blow you away with JAZZ.......2003-09-08

I never really knew what jazz was all about until I heard this kid jam. And what's even more amazing about the whole experience was the fact that he was a kid. I mean I've been to jazz clubs and watched performances by great musicians and all... but it wasn't anything like RESONANCE. Taylor Eigsti gives you more than a great experience, he leaves an impression that makes you want more and more. I was told that he's even better live. Makes me wonder if he's going to release another album.

        5 out of 5 stars Prodigy proves he's not just a novelty.......2003-08-29

What an awesome musician! With chops that strike comparisons to Benny Green and Geoff Keezer, but with musicality that hints at Brad Mehldau, Eigsti's album is a great listen. The CD opens with "Got A Match?" and right off the bat Eigsti opens with a smokin' two-handed solo that raises eyebrows. Next, "Juliette," is said to have been written in the studio by the trio (John Shifflett on bass and Jason Lewis on drums) and recorded in one take. "Oleo" continues the spectacle, particularly when Eigsti breaks into a stride solo late in the song that is astounding. Following "Angel Eyes" is an Eigsti original, "Avolation" which, along with the two other originals on the album ("Introspection" and "Uncle Smith," the latter being named for the late Smith Dobson, a bay area pianist whose influence on the young talent is evident) prove that Eigsti is not just playing party favors. The kid can PLAY, and this record proves why he turns heads all around the world. I highly suggest this album for anybody who wants to get in on the ground floor of a jazz legend.
