Eddie Daniels, the Weber and Brahms clarinet quintets.......2007-01-09

Eddie Daniels, together with Cuban-born Paquito d'Rivera, is the main heir of the Benny Goodman tradition of full mastery of the clarinet both for jazz and for classical music. This cd with two famous clarinet quintets, by Weber and Brahms, is played with sensitivity and virtuosity. The clarinet blends very well with The Composers String Quartet. The quality of the recording is excellent: transparent and warm.

Ultimately flawed, but fascinating..........2001-12-12

This is a tough one to rate. Four stars feels possibly overly generous, yet there are some treasures here, including the superb and not-heard-often-enough Contrasts by Bela Bartok, a chamber masterwork that Goodman commissioned. (Few people realize just how many modern classics Goodman inaugurated. Among his many other achievements, he enriched the world of 20th century chamber music, something for which he is not given credit.) The works here are fascinating--and this Debussy Clarinet Rhapsody may be one of the best performances the work has ever received. Yet when listening to these recordings, which range in sound quality from fair for the time to less than great for the time, one can't escape the conclusion that BG, the "King of Swing," the top pop musician of the 1930s, never really felt at home in classical music, never really performed it with confidence. The man who could play passages of fiery virtuosity with his jazz croanies and make the impossible sound easy was himself ill-at-ease when surrounded by the likes of Joseph Szigeti, Bela Bartok or the Budapest String Quartet. The man who made more in a year than the president of the United States trembled when on stage with orchestra musicians who are now footnotes to history. And in a way it's hard to blame him: at the time jazz and popular music were at pains to demonstrate to the "serious" music world that they were not, well, garbage. Although Goodman had just triumphed in Carnegie Hall shortly before the earliest of these recordings was made, and although swing and jazz were starting to get *some* respectable press, most musicians in the classical field still thought jazz low and the practitioners crude and unskilled. Bartok even resented writing his work for Goodman, and did it for the commission alone. (Benny payed him $3,000, money he desperately needed.) Classical musicians called Goodman the "Jazznik," and when he studied classical technique with some of them they just took his money, figuring he was wasting his time. Only later did he enjoy a very productive study period with a sympathetic British clarinetist, Reginald Kell.

As a result of all this, all the performances here, except maybe the Barbirolli, tend to have a certain tenseness and uncertainty to them. ("Glorious John" was good at calming musicians down because he was so unpretentious, and that may explain the success of his recording.) Goodman could always play the notes, and the lack of technical slips considering this was unfamiliar repertoire and before tape could be spliced is impressive. But Goodman never seems to know what to make of the music. He has little conception of it, and his tone,so warm and flowing in swing and dance music, is here uncertain, sometimes almost shrill, always a little wavery. As someone once commented in the Brahms with Nadia Reisenberg, he sounds more like a student in a recital than a finished clarinetist.

The Mozart is among the shakiest, though he was better in the simpler Quintet than he was in the darker and more troubled Concerto. Still, he leads the music nowhere. The Brahms is similarly uncertain, though Reisenberg is superb and the real reason to listen to this performance. As mentioned, the Barbirolli Debussy Rhapsody comes off best, and Goodman's technique and fire are up to the challenge of the Bartok, even though upon first seeing the music he was said to have remarked "I'm gonna need three hands to play this thing!" The other works are fine but not extraordinary, and act more as encores on the disc. In none of them does Goodman have a voice of distinction, a personality that would make his classical as recognizable as when he played just one bar of swing.

Benny never did get over his awe of classical music. It might have helped him if he had. He once commented about the horrid hollywood biograhpical movie of his life, "The Benny Goodman Story," that he wished they would have emphasized jazz fans coming to classical through his recordings rather than vice-versa. It seemed there was always a little voice in the back of Goodman's mind telling him he really should have been a classical clarinetist first and a dance and jazz musician second. A close friend of his near the end, James T. Maher, said one day he was about to knock on the door of Benny's Manhattan apartment when he heard Goodman practicing within. He was playing one of Brahms' autumnal clarinet sonatas, alone. Maher said he didn't want to interrupt, so he stayed outside, his ear pressed to the door. And he said that day Benny played Brahms like you never heard it on stage or on record. It was, he said, as if Brahms had come by to chat. It's too bad there wasn't some way to get that sound down on tape without Goodman's knowing it. As it is, these recordings are fine and are definitely worth a listen. Perhaps I've even been a little too harsh on some of them. It's just a shame that a first-class jazz soloist was never quite a first-class classical soloist. But he could have been. The technical equipment was there.

An Excellent Compilation Disc.......2004-09-05

This is an excellent compilation disc of clarinet music. It contains a good variety of music, but enough non-standard pieces that it doesn't end up being just another CD with Mozart/Brahms/Weber... Most of the pieces on this disc are standard repertoire (Mozart, Brahms, Weber, Stravinsky, Poulenc..) but there are also some less well known pieces such as a Teleman duet for chalumeaux, Beethoven duet for clarinet/bassoon, and Berg's brilliant 4 Pieces (this piece is not often recorded, and the disc is worth buying for this piece alone!).

The disc features a variety of performers, which further increases the diversity of this disc. All the musicians play very well.

The BEST feature of this disc is that you can put it into a computer (doesn't work on apples, unfortunately) and you can watch the scores of the music while they play. You can even print some of them. This is really a valuable feature.

This compilation is brave enough to stray from the standard rep and offer some lesser known masterpieces in addition to the staples. Additionally, with the computer feature, you can't NOT buy this CD.

A Great Wind Player.......2004-05-22

His tone may not be that bright, but it mixes perfectly well the other woodwinds and the orchestra as a whole. And like many musicians of the older generation, be it Dohnanyi (composer/pianist), or Rachmaninoff, or Bartok, or Backhaus, their tempi are never that rigid, and their scales never that even, but they are full of live, so vivid and so effective. So, when Carl comes to the second movement, like these great muscians of the past, his sweet-bitter tone is apt to break your heart...

Marvelous, especially the Mozart pieces.......2003-08-30

I actually bought this CD just for one piece, which is the Mozart Quintet in A. I had been haunted by that piece since (just as millions of TV watchers did) I heard it in the final episode of M*A*S*H, "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen." This gentle yet melancholic piece was the cornerstone of Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester III's subplot -- he was endeavoring to get some Chinese POW's to play it properly and actually making some progress until his "orchestra" was taken off the compound to be repatriated. Their tragic fate would later lead Winchester to say that music had been his escape from the harshness of the war, but that it would now forever remind him of it. For many years afterwards I would hear the Quintet's opening phrases, particularly when I was sad. I bought Romanza primarily for this piece, and Gervaise de Peyer performs it wonderfully.

I have grown rather fond of the other pieces, particularly the Telemann and Beethoven compositions, but I always play Track 2 first.

Beautiful clarinet playing.......2003-01-03

This is an excellent collection of clarinet music. All the perfomers have beautiful tone and execute technically difficult passages very well. The cd has a good variety of pieces for clarinet, ranging from a baroque chalumeaux (predecessor of the modern clarinet) duet to Mozart and eventually to Stravinsky. I have studied the clarinet for eight years and have worked on some of the pieces on this cd. I am highly impressed with this recording.

A wonderful way to start a classical collection.......2006-10-20

These five discs are the first in a series of ten CDs that have what are considered to be the most famous and best known classical masterpieces of all times. It has most of those songs that everybody knows, and here and there a song that's familiar, but you didn't know who was the composer. It's a great collection to use to start your classical collection, because from these occasionally shortened clips you can move on to the "real deal" and discover lots of great music along the way.

My only issue with this was that there was an entire disc devoted to Mozart, and thus other less-known composers, who are just as good, got no mention at all. Everyone knows who Mozart is, but few know of Telemann, Spohr, etc. I feel that there should have been a few more pieces by less known composers in place of an entire disc of Mozarts music.

A Bargain.......2004-02-28

A great selection of classical music with good, pleasant sound. These discs are to be listened to and enjoyed; not analyzed and argued over. Just play one after the other for hours of famous pieces that take you chronologically from the Baroque through the Romantic period. It is an easy and economical way to listen to a fine general survey of great, timeless music. Plainly stated, a bargain.

It's an OK CD.......2003-02-07

There are a lot of classical music on these CDs, but the quality of the orchestra is not that good :(

They need to improve the digital quality of the music, even with a great CD player the music sounds pretty awful

while not the best and crispest recordings and best interpretations of the compositions, this is a good start to delving into classical music. it does require a learned taste to truly enjoy some of the more complex and diverse classical pieces and this is a good start.

Truly enjoyable.......2002-05-16

I don't know if one could say that these are the "definitve" recordings of classical works, but they are certainly good, and are a great way for people to discover the titles and composers of some of the great familiar works, even if they are untutored, as I am. Two questions though: where are the next five volumes? I have the first 50 works here, but there must be 50 more somewhere? Also, did nobody but Mozart write great works from 1776-1785? One volume is nothing but Mozart.
