One tiny mistake.......2007-03-09
The only regret is that in the liner
notes, the names of composers Manuel Ponce
and Heitor Villa-Lobos are misslabeled in their pictures
thought you should know that; otherewise
the recording is great outstanding work
of Isbin and the New Yorkers, Serebrier is
just as great as always...
Concierto de Aranjuez.......2007-01-24
Wanted the concert from Jackson Hole. This isn't it. Not so hot.
A very solid recording.......2005-11-14
Sharon Isbin gives a phenominal performance on this album. All three concertos are excecuted very well. One of the biggest things that I enjoy about Aranjuez on this CD is that the guitar never gets covered up by the orchestra. I have listened to recordings of Aranjuez and not known that certain passages were even in the guitar part until I saw someone perform the concerto live. This is a great recording because it gives you three essential guitar concertos on one recording executed by world class musicians.
The Rodrigo concerto is without a doubt the most important and famous composition involving a guitar in the entire classical repertory. However, of the three concertos on this recording, Aranjuez is probably the weakest one on the disc. Isbin's tone gets a little to naily and clicky sometimes on this piece. Some of the runs in the first movement are a little sloppy and the cadenza in the second movement is a little over dramatic and the climax of the cadenza is very harsh. However, from the standpoint of sheer musical interpretation, it is probably one of the best interpretations of Aranjuez I've ever hear. Isbin adds little details to the piece that make it much more exciting.
The Villa-Lobos is very exciting. It seems that Isbin cleans up her technique a little by this point. The Ponce is brilliant as well. Words cannot describe the amazing execution of these pieces. I also cannot give as much critism to these pieces because I don't know them as well as the Rodrigo. Overall, this is a very solid recording. It is probably the best classical guitar recording of the year.
Recommended.......2005-07-16
Superlative version of the "Concierto de Aranjuez". The only caveat is a few too many fireworks in a cadenza in the otherwise beautiful second movement. Since it is slightly overwrought, though this album is a must for guitar lovers, it shouldn't be the only recording of this piece in one's collection. Try balancing it with the less emotional Christopher Parkening version.
Worthy of a Grammy nomination, at the very least!?!.......2005-02-15
I'm sure that Sharon Isbin does not exactly live for Grammy Awards, although they certainly don't hurt a performer's career. However, it is astonishing to me that her collaboration in this recording with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Jose Serebrier was not seen fit to merit at least a nomination for the 2005 awards. I'm sure that all of the nominees and the winner (announced the previous night) gave fine performances, but they could not have been any more compelling than this one.
I've heard many recordings of classical guitar with orchestra, and none that I have heard surpass this one. It is true that Isbin made a previous recording of the Rodrigo in 1989 with Lawrence Foster and the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra that received critical acclaim and that Rodrigo himself praised her performance then as among the very best. However, that earlier recording contained one major flaw: the guitar was apparently not miked separately from the orchestra. As a result, the orchestra often covered her playing to an annoying degree. (If the guitar did have its own miking, the engineers did not bother to use it when they created the master.)
The current recording of the Rodrigo has all of the artistry of that first recording and none of its defects. The presence of both guitar and orchestra is, indeed, intimate. As a result, so much more of her interplay with the orchestra, as well as her unmatched range of color and dynamics, not to say technical brilliance, stand out brilliantly.
Sharon is, perhaps, unique among guitarists recording today in coming closest to the expressive range found only in Segovia, even to the point of almost matching his apparently unmatchably warm vibrato. And Segovia unfortunately never had a recording this magnificent in detail and presence to pass on to us. If you consider that Segovia is never known to have played Rodrigo's "Concierto De Aranjuez," then I would not hesitate in suggesting that this recording gives you an excellent idea of how he might have played it (along with more of his unique vibrato).
The other two works on the recording are equally brilliant. The Villa-Lobos surprises (I had not heard it before), and the Ponce, again, is a very close match to Segovia's own matchless recording of that piece.
In truth, Sharon Isbin brings her own unique qualities, including a steadier sense of tempo that stands apart from Segovia's famously self-determining (and remarkably effective) tempi. With more recordings like this, and a personal and professional generosity that stands apart, her name may yet be uttered in the same breath as that of the formerly unsurpassable Segovia.
So, what did happen to that Grammy nomination?

Ned Rorem (b. 1923) holds dual citizenship: in the realm of words and the realm of music. In the first, he has produced a notoriously frank multivolume diary; in the second, numerous symphonies and chamber music works. But it is his hundreds of songs that make him famous, for this is where his two worlds meet and merge. However, this disc, celebrating his approaching 82nd birthday, presents three of his instrumental works. Spanning four decades, they vary greatly in style and content, but have in common a singing, sometimes almost spoken quality; Rorem calls this "a setting of words that aren't there." Indeed, both concertos have six movements whose descriptive titles strongly imply a narrative thread. Those of the Violin Concerto (1984) are thematically connected; they begin with "Twilight" and end with "Dawn." Soft, slow, lyrical passages alternate with busy running ones; timpani crash, woodwinds sing, the violin converses with the orchestra. The very difficult, brilliant solo part, played with easy virtuosity and a gorgeous tone by Philippe Quint, exploits every instrumental resource; the orchestration is masterful. The Flute Concerto (2002) was commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra for its principal flutist, Jeffrey Khaner, who plays it splendidly on this premiere recording. It features violent dynamic contrasts and imaginative orchestral sound effects; the flute adds color and rhythmic verve, acting more like a partner than a soloist. "Pilgrims" for string orchestra is slow, lyrical, warm, tonal, with lovely soaring melodies. The title refers not to America's founding fathers but to a biblical quote: "...strangers and pilgrims on the earth"; though written in 1958, it too has never been recorded. --Edith Eisler

Another Fabulous Rorem Disc.......2006-08-16
Naxos has issued another excellent CD is what is becoming a Ned Rorem cycle. This CD opens with a short work called Pilgrims, written for string orchestra. The subject of the music has nothing to do with the founding pilgrims but was based on a Bible verse from Hebrews. The mood is one of reflection, not sad but one of recalling things that were not attained. The Flute Concerto was written in 2002 but is more of a suite than a concerto. It was written on a commission from the Philadelphia Orchestra for their principle flautist Jeffrey Khaner, who performs the piece here. The six movements bear the names: The Stone Tower, Leaving-Traveling-Hoping, Sirens, Hymn, False Waltz and Resume and Prayer. The music is a kind of Odyssey, which was considered as a possible title. The concerto begins with an energetic first movement named for the studio in New York where the music was composed, the second is quite and reflective while the third, Sirens, is mysterious with the flute calling out to caress and tempt sailors. Hymn is scored for five instruments: bassoon, piano, trumpet, viola and flute; a short interlude that gives way to the False Waltz with a comic waltz tune interlaced with boisterous music punctuated with tympani. The final part, Resume and Prayer brings back the musical ideas in the prior movements with a long cadenza for the flute, ending quietly.
The Violin Concerto was composed in 1984 and like the Flute Concerto is cast in six movements, again making it more of a suite especially since each movement is treated as a narrative being thematically linked. The movements are: Twilight, Toccata-Chaconne, Romance Without Words, Midnight, Toccata-Rondo and Dawn. The Romance Without Words title was borrowed from Mendelssohn and is a song that had its words removed. As the names indicate, the concerto is something of a journey. Dawn recalls the Twilight section; the jagged rhythms of the Toccata-Chaconne are reflected in the false waltz of the Toccata-Rondo. The soloist, Philippe Quint plays beautifully, especially in the Midnight section with he beautifully conveys the mysterious and melancholy atmosphere. Jose Serebrier conducts another wonderful program of Ned Rorem with the first two works being World Premiere records. I will be looking forward to further releases.
Who knew Rorem's non-vocal music was so wonderful?.......2006-05-20
You can guess from this review's title that it will be a rave. Until I heard Rorem's symphonies (also on Naxos) a couple of years ago, I had no idea that Ned Rorem could write so beautifully for orchestra. Well, I did know, too, because years ago there were recordings of some of his tone poems (String Symphony, Sunday Morning, Eagles -- Louis Lane, Atlanta Symphony) but that was long enough ago that it had slipped from memory. Since hearing this CD I pulled them out and reveled in their beauty, too. On this disc we have two concerti that are entirely engaging, the Flute Concerto and the Violin Concerto, and for 'filler' another tone poem, 'Pilgrims' (for string orchestra).
Pride of place goes to the alluringly beautiful Flute Concerto. Written for and played here by the principal flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Jeffrey Khaner, it is a collection of six movements that have little to do with classical concerto forms; Rorem himself says it could just as properly be called a suite (and the same applies to the Violin Concerto). Taking his inspiration partly from the flute music of the impressionists, particularly Debussy, we hear music of many moods. The separate movements have more or less arbitrary titles -- implying but not really outlining some sort of narrative. Rorem has said that no matter what kind of music he is writing he always has silent song lyrics in mind -- 'words that are not there' -- and this gives his music both a narrative feel and a rhapsodic construction. For me the two movements that I connected with most are 'Leaving-Traveling-Hoping' with its pastoral calm, and 'False Waltz' with its repeated timpani figure and skittering flute. (Interestingly, there is a movement in the violin concerto that also has a repetitive timp figure as a kind of chaconne bass.) Khaner, whose name I knew but whose solo work I didn't, is a nonpareil flutist. I particularly like that he doesn't have the fruity vibrato so commonly heard from European flutists. Still, he has numerous tone colors at his disposal; not an easy thing with an overtone-poor instrument like the flute. I am eager to hear more from him.
The Violin Concerto is from 1985 and has previously been recorded by Gidon Kremer, a recording I have not heard. Rather more expressionistic that the Flute Concerto, it too is a six-movement suite rather than a classic concerto. Phillippe Quint, whose recording of William Schuman's violin concerto I quite liked, is a marvelous advocate for this virtuosic work. Still, I am less struck by this concerto than the Flute Concerto, which I feel confident will enter the repertoire.
The 'filler' is Rorem's 1959 'Pilgrims' which doesn't refer to America's founding fathers but takes its title from a passage in Hebrews (11:13) and actually was prompted by a passage quoting that verse in Julien Green's novel 'Le voyageur sur la terre' (we will remember that Rorem lived in France a number of years and is an ardent Francophile). For string orchestra and lasting about seven minutes, it is elegiac and richly harmonized with much use of divisi strings.
The performances here could hardly be bettered. Jose Serebrier, who earlier recorded the three Rorem symphonies with the Bournemouth Symphony, conducts the excellent Royal Liverpool Philharmonic in idiomatic and persuasive accounts of this music. He also contributes the helpful booklet notes.
Enthusiastically recommended, particularly for the Flute Concerto.
Scott Morrison
SEREBRIER RECORDS MORE ROREM PREMIERES.......2006-05-17
Following on the steps of his memorable recording of the Rorem three symphonies (two of them world-premiere recordings) José Serebrier gives us now the world premiere of Rorem's string
orchestra masterpiece, "PILGRIMS", a gem that should attain the notoriety of Samuel Barber's famous "Adagio for Strings", and the first recording of Rorem's new Flute Concerto, recently premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra and Jeffrey Khaner, who is the soloist in this CD. Jeffrey Khaner is the solo first flute of the venerable Philadelphia Orchestra.
José Serebrier makes the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic sound
full and warm in the string piece, and absolutely accurate and razor-sharp in the accompaniment of the two concertos. It's hard to imagine a better performance. Obviously the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic is a first-class orchestra, but it takes a master like Serebrier to bring out all their potential. The Flute Concerto is masterfully played by Khaner, who obviously knows every nuance and every note in his heart and mind. He gives a truly spectacular, virtuoso performance. The variety of sound and colors is amazing. The work itself, a sequence of several movements in the form of a suite, is quite different in style and character from the older Violin Concerto, (which was previously recorded by Gidon Kramer and Leonard Bernstein with the New York Philharmonic).
The Violin Concerto in the Naxos CD has the advantage of the soloist, the young Russian-American Philippe Quint, who surpasses Kramer by a long shot, in articulation, musicality, even intonation. It sounds like an incredibly difficult work,
but Quint manages to make it sound easy and even simple. We heard him previously in the memorable recording of the beautiful Concerto by the American composer William Schuman, with José Serebrier conducting the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, (which perhaps was Quint's debut recording). The Rorem performance is even better sounding, which is remarkable, considering that the CD of the Schuman is truly exceptional. Quint sounds now more assured. Obviously he has known the Rorem Violin Concerto for a long time.
"Pilgrims" give the strings of the RLP the opportunity to shine under Serebrier's inspired direction. He manages to obtain a Stokowskian string tone and glow, the sort of sound quality that hasn't been heard on disc since Stokowski. The work and the performance are a delight.
All three works are quite different in character, while the Rorem style and spirit remain recognizable in each. The orchestrations are brilliant and the writing for the solo instruments obviouslly challenging, but extremely idiomatic. It's the kind of recording one wants to hear again and again.
This is one of the most rewarding recordings of new music I have heard in years.

What can one say about a 15-year-old composer, after listening to his Fifth Symphony or his string quintet, that won't be either of the "precocious genius" type or the "for his age" type? Don't expect Mahler and don't expect Mozart. Just judge the music by itself: Greenberg is an adept composer. His music is both good to listen to and interesting. A composer now for many years (he began playing cello at three), Greenberg's influences and derivations are clear--here's a bit of Shostakovich, here's some Bartok---but he also is developing a voice of his own and has the technique to do it. Greenberg can write a good fugato, his melodies linger, he knows how to get the oboe's plaintive side into focus, and his climaxes are built up and effective. He writes a good, somewhat sullen waltz (the Symphony begins with it). The Quintet uses two cellos (he seems to like the lower strings) and, in all, is the more engaging of the two works. José Srebrier leads the LSO with sensitivity and the Juilliard Quartet is, as ever, superb. Is this "great" music? It's hard to say--but you can be sure it's strong enough to be taken seriously and programmed at a concert hall near you. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:
A Fascinating Disc.......2007-06-14
I first got to know about Jay Greenberg from his astonishing 60 Minutes interview during which, I believe, it was mentioned that his 5th Symphony had been recorded. Mr. Greenberg is truly a prodigy with great gifts but also, as this disc demonstrates, he writes interesting music.
To have already written a 5th Symphony by age 14 bears comparison to Mozart, Mendelssohn and, in the 20th Century, Korngold, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. The symphony begins quietly with an introspective melody that gradually builds toward a climax when the themes are boldly developed, and the movement concludes with a flourish. The Scherzo is an energetic and playful movement with an ominous middle section that provides a brief respite before going back to the march-like tempo of the beginning. The third movement is bleak and introspective dominated by strings and percussion and the finale is a rousing and tuneful movement that brings the symphony to a triumphant conclusion.
If anything, the String Quintet is even more impressive and was written for the standard string quartet with the addition of a cello. An introspective opening movement gives way to a charming Scherzo and is followed up by an energetic final movement with a nice interplay between the soloists. For me, this piece sounded much like some of Shostakovich's string quartets but this is only my opinion and I mention it so that someone could gauge what the music is like. The music of Jay Greenberg does not comfortably fit into a "mold" so I cannot say comfortably that his music (the symphony in particular) reminds me of other composers, and perhaps this is an unfriendly approach to his music.
This disc is also memorable because Mr. Greenberg's mentor and teacher Jose Serebrier conducts the London Symphony, and Maestro Serebrier (himself a composer at a young age) added some interesting notes to the booklet. The music is beautifully recorded and certainly a must if you are interested in contemporary music.
Tastes Vary.......2007-05-22
While people are in many ways similar (e.g. most of us have 2 each of eyes, ears,...) they also differ significantly. This is extremely noticeable regarding art appreciation: meat vs. poison. Other reviewers can, & have, described the specifics of the wonders of this CD--far better than I can. Certainly, the teenage composer is most impressive. But, to my way of thinking, an amazon review should reflect the individual item with only informative comparisons to other artists & works. The rating depends primarily on the item & (esp.) on the reviewer. This CD is modern symphonic music. If a listener enjoys this subset of classical music, I think he or she will enjoy this CD--and, perhaps, the age of the composer will add to the owner's pleasure--having purchased an early work of a (I expect) major composer years later. Thus, despite some faults, I cannot give this work a low rating--despite the fact that I'm a big baroque fan & not of modern symphonic music at all. Indeed, I received this CD as a gift. Still, in no way can I give it 5 stars, or even 4. Purists forgive me, but I find this rather frenetic, nerve-jangling, etc. So, I'll compromise and give it 3 stars. The value of this CD will, I believe depend far more on your personal taste than on its intrinsic, musical value.
Great music - great quality.......2007-05-14
amazing that a boy of 13 has written this music;
Although you can hear that his music is not yet mature, it still is great music. And the audio quality of the CD is also very good.
Young, but great!.......2007-01-16
Jay Greenberg's Symphony NO. 5 is wonderful. It is full of life that you would think a young man of 13 would possess. There are some movements on the CD that remind you of his youthfulness, which makes it all the more enjoyable. The symphony is like watching a child at play having the time of his life. Jay Greesberg is a genius and one could only hope that there will be many more symphonies yet to come.
Stravinsky Meets Mozart in the 21st Century.......2007-01-12
Who says that no one can write music anymore in the classical style? Meet Jay "Blue Jay" Greenberg, age 15, and the hottest composer in this century. If you like Igor Stravinsky, you'll like listening to Blue Jay--and if you know anything about Mozart and how prolifically he wrote, then you will understand why people compare Blue Jay to him. The London Symphony Orchestra is, furthermore, in top form, as you would expect.

Customer Reviews:
hdcd sampler 2.......2007-01-12
Sound is very good on the home stereo. Perfect if you have a hdcd player. Sounds really good on the discman as well. This disc has a longer playing time than the first.
HDCD adds sound value.......2002-07-15
I bought this CD to go shopping for high end speakers. Not knowing really what HDCD was or how it sounds. Well, I also took along regular 16/44 CDs as well.
Conclusion: huge difference in sound... I would say moderately improved dynamic range, but more importantly, the resolution of the sound. You can hear (on track 3) the chorus taking breaths... and on certain systems even individuals taking breaths at fractionally separate points in time during a rest beat.
With good electronics and your preferred selection, and I mean near reference quality electronics, the HDCD sound MOVES you. I don't know how SACD sounds, but when I get my new room together, HDCD is definitely going to be there.
FYI, I listened to HDCD on a mark levinson 390S... so HDCD had the benefit of excellent D/A.
My immediate favourites are tracks 2 and 3. I must go find more Russian vocal type stuff... very cool sounds. Track 2 (Vikings) is amazing... the pipe organ wants to bring down the house if you run it thru 350w/channel and Wilson Watt Puppies.
I Was Skeptical, but Hearing is Believing.......2001-04-06
I bought a Toshiba 5109 last year for the progressive component video capability. I knew that it had a HDCD decoder but that fact didn't make much of an impression at the time. I didn't buy it for that reason and it wasn't a factor in my evaluation of DVD players. I was wrong, it should have been.
Two months ago my interest in possibly buying a SACD and DVD-Audio player caused me to take a look at this older but more established 2-channel technology...
I bought a couple classical recordings of some favorite works (various Copland and the Bruckner 9th) that were well reviewed. I was stunned at how exceptionally good they sounded, as close to a live performance in a good hall in a good seat as I have ever experience in non-live setting, but was this the exceptional quality of the recoding engineering only or was the HDCD technology a factor, too?
The final proof was this sampler, which has comparisons of the same material in regular 16-bit format and HDCD. I can't begin to describe the incredible difference it makes. I hesitate to say it, but the words "profound difference" comes to immediately to mind.
I had always been skeptical about audiophile comments about how something was lost when the industry moved away from analog vinyl to CD format. I no longer am.
One caution if you play this CD, track 7 has exceptionally wide dynamic range. Luckily, I am cautious and my system can handle huge transients, but I think I may have melted the windows near one of my speakers -grin-, the brass sound is white hot.
I can see why Microsoft purchased this technology.
George
