This is one of the best releases of Simpson's music from Hyperion. If you're collecting the symphonies, you'll at least want to add this to your collection. His String Quartet No. 14 is a 1990 work that employs Simpson's characteristic contrapuntal and propulsive manner. He's also got Beethoven in the back of his mind, in terms of unfolding architecture; but there's nothing wrong with that. His Quintet (1983) is for clarinet, bass clarinet, and string trio, and is made much richer in texture by the clarinets. String Quartet No. 15 (1991) is a three-movement work of turbulent character, avoiding tonality altogether. --Paul Cook

These chamber works nearly cover Simpson's entire life as a composer. The dates are 1954 for the Third String Quartet, 1975 for the Third String Quartet, and 1987 for the String Trio. Simpson's string music tends to be intimate and intense, perhaps a bit standoffish the way Bartók's later quartets can be. The Third String Quartet has a traditional design and unfolds predictably. In the Sixth String Quartet, Simpson uses Beethoven's Razumovsky Quartets as a model, though Beethoven would be the last composer to come to mind. The String Trio (Prelude, Adagio, and Fugue) is more propulsive, more representative of Simpson's mature style. Interesting and intelligent. --Paul Cook

These works, along with the Haydn symphonies, are the most important and revolutionary works in the history of Western music. Haydn was the true inventor of the string quartet, and his 681 or 682 examples of the form have never, as a body, been equaled. They span his entire life, from the 1750s straight through to 1803, and without them the chamber music achievements of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert--and everyone who came later--would have been unthinkable. These works set the standard, and they still do. These performances, if not the last work in polish, are lively and affectionate. Lively, colourful.......2005-06-02

If you are going to have only one set of Haydn's collected string quartets, this is a strong candidate. These are lively, colourful performances, not always as balanced and classical as the Tatrai set, but with much, much better sound quality. If you don't care for production values, you could of course go for Tatrai; if you need a reasonably good sound, I guess Aeolian is the best of the spirited performances. Even if I have the Tatrai set, I find that the Aeolian set conveys additional qualities of the music. (Both the Angeles set and the Kodaly set leave me indifferent. )

We had an unexpected baby - cutting a long story short, he was premature, tinier than anything I had seen before, and thinking he would not be with us for long, we actually bought this set for him. Silly really. I really knew the quartets only by reputation, and thought that he could hear just a little bit of music in this world, he would be happy for that short space...
Flash to two year later. My goodness, he is big and strong. He adores Haydn. He loves Beethoven and Bach. He dances to everything, even the beeping sound from the traffic lights, for goodness sake! This music has made him very musically aware, we know he is pitch perfect now, he can sing half a dozen film themes, and does it in the right key. He's half mad most of the time, but lovely and splendid in his small way.

Haydn was in love all his life. He knew some sort of joy which I have dimly seen. This joy shatters every vessel it tries to fill, comes from outside the world, but spends serious time in it, pestering the life out of those who have ears to hear. You might hear it here. Particularly in the first disc, which Jonathon knows off by heart now. Usually by track 12 he is sound asleep.

I really recommend this. I wish I could buy a few tens of these and give them away to quite a few people I know, but alas, I'm still paying for the first box! (Only joking)

If you are a chamber music lover you should buy this set, more than 22 hours of the truly best quartet music ever. The Aeolian is just supreme. Don't think about the price. If you want to impove your clasical CD collection, well buy it.

No Op. 3's & 681 quartets?.......2000-11-22

The likely reason the Op. 3's are not included in this package is due to the fact that they are often attributed to R. Hofstetter instead of Papa Haydn himself. Also the typo in the staff review was probably meant to read 68 or 68 1/2 (the 1/2 referring to the final unfinished quartet Op. 103). Whether you attribute the Op. 3's to Haydn or not, the actual count is around 70, making this a very substantial, if not complete, set of Haydn quartets.

Intense Quartet-Trilogy by Simpson in Private Recordings.......2000-10-14

Robert Simpson (1921-1997) wrote in a deeply personal style which nevertheless admitted its influences, those in particular of Beethoven, Nielsen, and Bruckner, but also of Schoenberg. Like several other mid-to-late-twentieth century composers, Simpson managed to find a compromise between tonality and a species of serialism; he will often manipulate a strongly tonal theme the way that Schoenberg manipulated his (non-tonal) rows. This results in a music which evolves seamlessly but remains oriented to well- defined tonal centers. Simpson produced eleven symphonies and fifteen string quartets, as well as a good deal of other music in a variety of genres. (But no opera.) The fifteen string quartets constitute an oeuvre every bit the equal of contributions made to the identical literature by Schoenberg himself, by Bartók, and by Shostakovich (who also turned in fifteen). The argument could indeed be made that in scale and complexity, Simpson's fifteen surpass those of the prolific Russian - a possibility that if true might explain why Shostakovich now strikes us as fairly familiar while Simpson still poses something of an enigma. One of Simpson quartets, the Ninth, consists of no less than thirty-three palindromic variations and a palindromic fugue on a palindromic theme by Haydn; this work lasts nearly an hour in performance and aspires to a genuinely symphonic grandeur. Whereas Shostakovich's first quartet only modestly and tentatively tests the format, Simpson's tackles the genre audaciously with big gestures. In fact, Simpson's first three quartets form a cohesive group and comprise, in their overall architecture, a unified grand quartet in triptych. Pearl's recent release of Simpson's Quartets Nos. 1 through 3, recorded by the Element Quartet when the ink on the score-paper had hardly dried, makes for a good introduction to the composer and offers an intimate view of the material. The recordings come from acetates (No. 1) and tapes (Nos. 2 and 3) made privately by Simpson as a memento of the performances (1953 for No. 1 and 1954 for Nos. 2 and 3). Right away in Quartet No. 1, we hear the Nielsen influence, in the rocking ostinato over which much of the musical eventuation seems to unfurl. Much of the First Movement of the two-movement Quartet No. 1 sounds fugal, if it be not in fact a strict fugue "disguised" underneath the trappings of sonata-form. The Second Movement slows down considerably, beginning as an Andante and concluding "Gravely." Here Simpson reworks material from the First Movement by augmenting the note-values and by shifting from major to minor. Quartet No. 2 requires only a single movement. The kinship, the direct derivation from Quartet No. 1, will strike the listener immediately. Quartet No. 3 returns to the two-movement format of No. 1, so that the symmetrical pattern of the three works taken together is 2/1/2, a perfect arch. The concluding (second) movement of No. 3, however, is an Allegro Deciso, in contrast to the Grave of the corresponding movement in No. 1. This might be a good place to plug the extraordinary recorded lecture, with musical illustrations, given by Malcolm MacDonald about the Simpson quartets on Dunelm records. The Pearl issue is an incalculably important addition to the recorded archive of twentieth century chamber music.
