5 out of 5 stars Promising.......2007-06-13

I just heard You're a Wolf on the radio. Wow, great song; catchy yet deep. Brings to mind Fastball & Toad the Wet Sprocket. Looking forward to hearing the rest.

5 out of 5 stars What an incredible debut EP!.......2007-05-11

Alex Church, the lead singer and founder of Sea Wolf, was a founding member of my favorite band, Irving. His songwriting skills are amazing, and this EP, Get to the River Before It Runs Too Low, showcases his ability to write beautiful and engaging songs perfectly. My personal favorite is You're a Wolf, but every song he writes finds a way to burrow into my subconscious. While I lament the fact that he is no longer with Irving, I rejoice in the beauty that is Sea Wolf and am so thankful he is still bringing new songs into the world. I can't wait for the full album that will be released this year! In the meanwhile, I'm so excited to see Sea Wolf play live - they blew me away when I saw them play the noise pop festival.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Disney Music.......2007-03-28

These Disney tunes done in the style of classic composers are so much fun. Children and adults alike will enjoy these songs over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Uncle Walt would be quite honored!.......2006-12-20

For many a baby boomer, Walt Disney meant animation. But, besides that, music played an important part in the telling of the story. So interested in music was the animator that he fashioned one of his greatest triumphs ("Fantasia") on the works of the great masters.

Well, Donald Frasier and a bevy of musicians have compiled a wonderful collection of interpretations of familiar Disney tunes, many from Walt's time, along with a few latter day compositions.

Every selection is a winner, destined to make the listener reflect and recall the films from which they came. And if one is familiar with composer whose musical style is "copied" here, the album is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous CD.......2006-10-04

Being a classical music connoisseur, I often listen to my local public classical radio station to hear the works of the great composers of old and of today. One day the station played "Colors of the Wind" and announced it was from this CD. I fell in love with it. I am a huge Disney fan who has over 350 Disney songs on my iPod. Pretty much the only music I listen to is either classical or Disney. And having them combined makes this CD euphoria for the ears.

Each song is in the style of a different classical composer, and usually in the style of one of their more specific songs. One with a trained ear will hear chords and melodies in almost perfect similitude of the original.

I can listen to this CD over and over and never get bored. How could you be bored when you're hearing all of your favorite old Disney songs in a new exciting way?

4 out of 5 stars sleeping to Disney.......2006-07-30

I am really pleased that there is a classical music cd that has only Disney classics so that I can play them for my infant daughter while she sleeps. We are big Disney fans and it's fun to play these instead of the regular classical music. They sound just like the original songs. I would have given 5 stars but I wish they would have had all instrumental music, one of the songs has a choir singing, but it still sound good.

5 out of 5 stars this is a treasure.......2003-05-11

Disney music is always uplifting. Classical music is beautiful. Combine the two - and you get THIS! "Colors of the Wind" is glorious, followed by the enchanting title track. "Beauty and the Beast" is true to the romance of the original. "The Second Star to the Right" is magical. Everything is awesome - and flawless. I initially bought this because I love The Main Street Electrical Parade music, and that is definiely a highlight here - but so are ALL the other songs! This is GOOD STUFF! It is so excellent that it can be a very beneficial introduction to classical music - for kids AND adults.

3 out of 5 stars Probably worth having, but not as good as others.......2006-03-23

This is a good, but not great, Stan Rogers CD. There are some really compelling songs, like Cape St. Mary which, while a bit slow, is heart-rending at the end . There are some catchy songs, like Badger Drive and Two-Bit Cayuse. But there are some rather tedious songs too. All in all, it is worth having if you like Stan Rogers music, but it probably won't be as much a favorite as say, 'Home in Halifax' or 'From Fresh Water'.

4 out of 5 stars Still Stan-ding alone.......2001-04-04

I have been a Stan Rogers fan for almost 20 years and while I enjoy everything he has ever recorded, and miss him terribly, this is not my favorite album by him. However, that said, I think the song "Three Fishers" is one of the most haunting things anyone has ever recorded, and Stan's performance of it (aided by his brother Garret's fine fiddle) is worth of the price of this album. Add it to your list.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite SR album.......1998-06-15

This was the fourth (or fifth?) Stan Rogers album I got, but it's my favorite by far. Three Fishers (with Garnet's haunting fiddle) and Scarborough Settler's Lament (which reminded me of the longings of an English friend) are especially wonderful.

This album I got at Disneyland Paris. I saw it and just knew that I had to have it. It's classic disney tunes in the style of the great composers. And it really do remind of them. As a lover of classic music and disney music, this couldn't be a better album.

4 out of 5 stars A Milestone Plus Cheap Fills.......2005-11-26

1. First, the proverbial good news. The music from Erich Wolfgang Korngold's score for the 1941 film THE SEA WOLF (TSW) on this CD is a milestone. Kudos to the releasing label (RL) for providing us with the first modern recording of the complete score of Korngold's TSW! And the complete mini score from the film's trailer. No musical stone has been left unturned this time! The sound is flat-out superb. More kudos to the RL for employing an orchestra whose size and challenging composition matches that demanded by the fully-orchestrated score! The performance gives every indication that much rehearsal time and effort went into the final product.
2. The CD booklet is outstanding. Its author, Brendan G. Carroll, a renown Korngold authority, brings together just the right balance of film analysis and score de-construction. End of the good news.
3. The conducting on this CD is periodically undermined by the snail-like pace of the performance. There is often too little that is exciting to hear here. Retarded tempo is endemic in modern recordings of Korngold's film symphonies, and this CD clearly adds to that epidemic. Compared to the Gold Standard established by the late Charles Gerhardt in the 1970's (the reference CD recording can be found in track four on ELIZABETH AND ESSEX, BMG RCA Victor GD80185, 1973), the conducting on the current CD can be ponderous at best. Then there's the OST Platinum Standard (the reference CD recording is THE SEA WOLF, Tsuami TSU 0144, 2003). Compared to Korngold's command of the orchestra and his lightening fast baton, the current recording frequently sounds like it is on life support. The energy that Korngold imparts to his score is phenomenal. His orchestra's performance remains unsurpassed after almost 65 years!
4. This CD also includes excerpts from Korngold's score for the 1938 film THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (TAORH). Boos to the RL for going cheap with a worn out (but inexpensive) musical filler just to increase CD playing time. This is the 25th CD that contains essentially the same sort of collection of bits and pieces from TAORH! A complete and definitive recording was recently released (KORNGOLD: THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD, Marco Polo CD 8.225268, 2003). While the performance on the current CD is better than average, it, not unexpectedly, pales by comparison to the Marco Polo reference recording. The RL could have just released a shortened CD with only the TSW score (and, perhaps, reduced the price accordingly). Or contributed something equally rare like a concert of cues from, say, the 1955 film MAGIC FIRE.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A "must" for EWK enthusiasts; a "maybe" for others........2000-01-31

This much delayed (it was recorded in March of 1997!) and slimmed-down (originally to have four rather than 2.2 film "suites") CD is of the goldilocks genre--not great, but not bad either. Going to the numbers: four (out of five stars) for orchestral performances; three for sound quality; five for choice of selections (except for Elizabeth and Essex which barely rates a "one") and the proper ordering thereof; and two for the CD booklet "liner notes"--more on this later. The miking/recording/mixing suffers greatly from the coal-mine cavern syndrome (CMCS) which, sadly, is all too common in modern recordings of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's (EWK) film symphonies. Listeners are confined to the cheap seat at the rear of the hall rather than being intimately surrounded by the orchestra. The Juarez tracks comprise the most extensive of all extant modern recordings of this film symphony--it's almost half an hour long. Unfortunately, more is not necessarily better; tracks sound like a rough sampling (emphasis on the "rough") of the film symphony and often lack inter-track suite cohesiveness (rather inexcusable for an abridgment of the full film symphony). Transitions between tracks usually sound like film jump-cut editing looks. Elizabeth and Essex (the film is also known as "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex") is pleasant, but out classed by several other modern recording (the listener will probably be left with questions like "With a duration of only six minutes, why bother?" and "What's the point?" Beats me!). As for The Sea Wolf, it too is the most extensive of modern recordings released to date of this film symphony--also almost half an hour long--and the real "star of the show." Although the CMCS distracts, the orchestration and performance is flat-out riveting ("wow" seems to be the operative word here). A nonacoustic disappointment is the CD booklet. Nothing new or particularly interesting is presented about EWK, but way, way too much is written about a whole bunch of other folks. This is especially surprising, since Mr. Brendan Carroll (the author of the recent, definitive biography of EWK) is a contributor (albeit a secondary one) to the "liner notes."
