If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22

I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...

My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.

I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!

I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Baroque Music: A Prelude To Sleep.......2004-05-30

This album is from the popular series "Set Your Life To Music"
series. The theme for this one is "Baroque For Beauty Sleep" which seems to be a companion to "Baroque For Bathtime". Baroque music, especially the slower movements in many concertos, are exquisite nocturnal pieces that ease the transition from being awake to falling asleep. The beautiful, elegant, slow, graceful music of many of these pieces will definately relax you and even help you fall asleep. It's therapeutic. There are so many reasons one can buy this album. It can help you relax and soothe you, as already mentioned, and it can be played in the background of a message therapy session. It can serve as music for a romantic evening or dinner. And lastly, it hits the spot after a long day and you're ready to visit the world of dreams.

Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances, scored for lute and other Baroque period instruments, is the newest piece on the album. Respighi, a modern composer, was delving into neoclassic music and deliberately evoking the Baroque Era. It works wonderfully.
Naturally, no Baroque album is complete without Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Here is the Largo from "Winter" only it is played on panpipes by the New Age artist Zamfir. The sound is hauntingly beautiful. There is a sonata for flute and harp by Bach, the biggest name in the period and Vivaldi's "L'Estro Armonico" as well as Telemann's Suite in A for Recorder. One particular piece I enjoy and think you will too is the melodic and elegant Concerto Grosso No. 12 by Handel, the slow movement Larghetto E Piano. It is sheer tonal beauty. There is more concertos by Vivaldi, whose use of the flute is always very reflective and dreamy and even a solo aria from a motet of his, the soprano Elly Ameling sings "Nulla In Mundo Pax", a lyrical-coloratura showcase which crowns and concludes this gorgeous album.

Baroque to Comfort and Sleep By.......2004-02-16

Baroque is such a wide and wonderful musical discovery for us modern types. It is soothing and quieting to the soul, and in this case for the body as well.

Whether used as lullaby inducing or just listening pleasure and relaxation, this is nice collection. Including wide array of instruments: strings, flute, panpipes, oboe, flute, harp, guitar, recorder, piano, and voice --- this is truly enjoyable.

There is wide array of baroque composers as well --- Rephighi, Vivaldi, Bach, Albinoini, Telemann, and more.

Great price, great variety, great addition to your CD collection.

I commend the compilers for creating such a wonderful CD. The music is quite mellow, especially the pieces that are preformed by Zamfir, the famous panpipist. That whimsical woodwind gives a rustic, almost mythical feel the piece of music. You almost feel like you are in Arcadia awaiting a lecture by Chiron!

There is a good cross sampling of various Baroque pieces and Baroque artists. The variety is the spice that makes this CD worth buying and listening to over and over again. This CD also works well on shuffle, which remakes it into a brand new album.

There are a lot of oboes and string on this disc, and being a former oboist, I am electrified as I hear that instruments mellow honk!

Guys! Don't be put off by the cover-this is a good disc. Good for the mind, heart, and soul!

Mellow, but not sleepy.......2002-02-02

I don't know how to sum this one up. It is mellow, but you can't meditate to it. It's more upbeat than I would normally prefer to sleep to, but it works all the same. The music is performed so beautifully that I almost want to stay up and listen.

I think I know what electronic classical music is, considering I made an album called Kulture. This does not sound electronic, if it does, it uses drums = not good. It sounds way too classical.

The Last Bitter Lees in the Cup.......2007-05-11

I have a lot of affection for the Italian Concerto; it was the first Bach I ever heard outside a church, as recorded by Wanda Landowska. The piece was intended for a two-manual harpsichord, as were the Goldberg Variations and the Chromatic Fantasy; these are the least suitable of Bach's keyboard works for transcription to piano, and therefore had not been part of the active repertoire until Landowska revived them. They are "large" pieces in conception, with dramatic contrasts of dynamics built in through the use of the keyboard registers. Gould, I fear, imposes his own agenda of dynamic contrast, and that is the chief weakness of his performance; it's no wonder he "didn't like" either piece, since he can't really make them work musically. And no wonder they have been reissued as an afterthought in the remastered complete Gould. For piano fans seeking a "pianistic" performance on harpsichord, I'd recommend the remastered Landowska or the 1988 recording of the Concerto Italien and Ouverture a la Francaise by Kenneth Gilbert

Magnificent on Chromatic Fantasy.......2006-08-12

Personally speaking, this is one of the best interpretation I've ever heard on Chromatic Fantasy. Although Gould did not like so much this piece, he plays contrapuntal parts very transparent. His slow tempo allows to "touch" the concept behind of fantasy theme.
What brilliant pauses!! I think nobody like Gould can better interpret Bach's works.

Lifeless sound, lifeless performance.......2004-04-24

I am a fan of Gould (owning and liking many of his CDs) but occasionally he does disappoint. The Marcello concert is a complete disaster -- dry, emotionless performance as if played by a robot (you literally wouldn't tell the difference from a pre-programmed computer). Gould conveys none of the beauty and sensuality of this music. Reminds me of the terrible thing he has done to Bach's prelude #8 in Clavier I. The CD has generally poor, flat sound.

REALMS OF GOULD.......2003-12-27

Gould's tonal palette, though subtle, is not particularly wide. If he has used the sustaining pedal at all in the 78 playing minutes of this disc, I missed it, and it is patently impossible to use the damper pedal with the left leg crossed over the right, as in the photograph on the back of the box. That said, Michelangeli himself did not have more complete finger-control than Gould did, and the machined perfection of Gould's trills and other ornaments, and the diamond brilliance of his scales and runs, are a phenomenon in a very special class of their own. This disc is the Gould we know and either love or do not love. He is on his familiar 18th-century territory with J S Bach, C P E Bach and Scarlatti. He has a manifest empathy with the 18th-century idiom, or at least the early 18th-century, and I rarely see much point in elaborate comparisons with other interpreters. With Gould in early 18th-century music it is likely that if you admire his manner in general you will simply swallow his performances whole, as I tend to do. This disc contains both the Italian Concerto and the Chromatic Fantasia, and I was astonished to learn from the liner note that Gould disliked both. I was thrilled by his dramatic reading of the Chromatic Fantasia and his high-speed account of the last movement of the Italian Concerto, and I can only wonder what on earth he didn't like about them, so much conviction is carried by his playing. I had not heard him in Scarlatti before, and in all three sonatas he is relaxed and winning, as always his own man and nothing like Michelangeli or Lipatti, still less Horowitz.

There is a certain amount of quiet vocalising, but it is at least tuneful (unlike Serkin's), and it gives me no problem at all. There is also a knowledgeable and instructive liner-note on Gould's recording career, although some contradictions should have been sorted out as between pages 4/5 of the note, the note-writer's text and the back of the record-box as regards what fugues are played with the various fantasias (correct answer `none', a great relief to me personally in the matter of the rather dull effort that usually tags on to the Chromatic Fantasia). The recording technology used is something called Super Bit Mapping, and whatever it is it might have been invented specially for Gould.

Reissued Gould Leftovers.......2003-07-19

Sony has recently decided, yet again, to reissue all of Glenn Gould's recordings for Columbia, this time around in flavor-of-the-month original LP jackets. Make no mistake though, this is the same exact music, with no additional remastering, as its predecessor in the "Glenn Gould Edition," although now at mid-line instead of full price. As far as the content of this CD, the material has always felt like the leftovers of the remaining Bach works that the fickle Gould consented to play, with some Scarlatti and CPE Bach Sonatas tossed in to fill up the disc space. Even though, individually some of these pieces are closer to Gould's heart than other works that Columbia basically made him record in order to have the "Complete" Partitas, Toccatas, Well-Tempered Clavier, etc., overall the CD lacks the consistency and unison of efforts like the French or English Suites. This CD is not to be missed by Glenn Gould fans though, but they probably own one of the earlier CD incarnations anyway.
