    Barenboim recorded a perfectly fine cycle of Mozart piano concertos for EMI with the English Chamber Orchestra. He's now doing them all over again for Teldec with the Berlin Philharmonic, and one can only ask: Why? It's not that there's anything particularly wrong with these sensible performances; it's just that there is no particular reason why he had to do them all over again. This is particularly pressing when you consider that you can get the same works at budget price on Naxos in equally fine performances, or even Barenboim's own earlier cycle in a budget-priced box. The simple fact is that Barenboim has never had much of a reputation as a Mozart pianist (his Beethoven is another story altogether), so at full price, there's little reason to splurge on this disc. --David Hurwitz

      There probably isn't a better disc with three timeless Mozart concertos performed by a world-class artist than this one. I would have to agree with other reviewers that the real hidden gem on this cd is No. 12, incredibly captivating and charming, and this is certainly what the composer intended. In a letter to his father on December 28, 1782, Mozart described this concerto as, "a happy medium between what's too difficult and too easy...Natural without becoming vacuous;-there are passages here and there that only connoisseurs can fully appreciate-yet the common listener will find them satifying as well, although without knowing why."

      Despite his masterful manipulation of his listeners during the 18th century and today, concerto no 12 is one of Mozart's most overlooked pieces and it deserves to be played and heard much more than it is. This recording offers a great deal of wonderful music and excellent performances by Jeno Jando for very little money.

      Jenö Jandó and Naxos never cease to amaze. Volume 1 of the Complete Piano Concertos (Concertos No. 13 and 20) was very good, despite my slight reservations about the recorded sound. But Volume 2, recorded only one month later (June 1989), tops the first volume by quite a margin and deserves a full five-star evaluation, being in every way competitive, even among the higher priced CDs with this repertoire. The famous Concerto No. 21 in C Major, used in the film “Elvira Madigan”, is done best of all: the balance between soloist and orchestra is perfect, and Jenö Jandó himself captures exactly the mixture of playfulness and wistful sentiment (along with virtuosity) that this concerto exudes. I suppose most people will want to listen to the Adagio slow movement most of all, and that is, in my humble opinion, remarkably well done, but it should not prevent one from listening carefully to the other two movements, where the Concentus Hungaricus (this time round Naxos managed to get the spelling right: on Volume 1 there were three different versions!) shows itself to be a congenial partner to the brilliant Jandó.

      Concertos No. 12 and 14 are equally well done and also deserve more than a peremptory listening. Audiophiles may find that the sound on the Arte Nova recording with Matthias Kirschnereit and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra is a fraction better, but I suspect that 99% of listeners will be perfectly content with this Hungarian version. Full marks to Naxos and the team for a budget-priced production that will give pleasure to many ears for many years!

      This bargain-priced CD contains 2 terrific concertos, and one that is also perfectly OK. The gem of the 3 featured is No 12: you already know no 21, the so-called Elvira Madigan concerto, but you will love No 12. Its 3 movements are charming.

      Jeno Jando is a great perfomer of many different composers, but I especially love his classical period repertoire.

      Highly recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Pay Attention to a Flawless #12!.......2003-02-04

      Most people will be drawn to this CD by the well known Andante of the "Elvira Madigan". Concerto 21, to be sure, is flawless. Especially the medium slow andante (which has a tendency to drag in the hands of lesser ensembles, but is graceful and smooth here). I'm writing this review, though, to turn you - the soon to be smitten listener - on to a hidden treasure, overlooked but essential for any die-hard collector of Mozart masterpieces; Concerto #12.

      I bought this CD as part of the 5 disc box set of "Piano Concertos- vol. 2" packaged by naxos and I took immediately to this one for its vibrancy, melodicism and beauty that is definitely Mozart at his...well...most Mozart-ish. To give an idea to those unfamiliar, the allegro maestoso is on par with Mozarts finest divertimenti!

      And Jeno Jando with the Concertus Hungaricus perform it (not to mention the two others) with the unabashed beauty that it deserves. As with Naxos's entire collection of Mozart piano concertos, this is played in a very classical style. As was typical in Mozarts day, there were not so many tempo or dynamic changes and emphasis was placed on fluidity and melodic beauty - as differing from a romantic, grandiose interpretation. If you like your Mozart perky and fun while still being playfully contemplative (a la his divertimenti and flute & harp concerto), you will love concerto #12 and this CD!! If you, like myself, are already in love with these fine concertos, check out Naxos's collection of Mozarts piano concertos vols. 1 and 2 (this CD being in vol. 2.) Despite the budget price, the sound and performance is beautiful!

      This is one of my favorite versions of the "Elvira Madigan" concerto (No. 21/ K.467) and of No. 14 / K.449. Jeno Jando is an outstanding pianist and he is backed up by an excellent conductor in Andras Ligeti. It is a performance that compares well with higher-priced versions by pianists such as Brendel or Rubinstein. What an excellent bargain!

          After hearing a superb Mozart 17th Concerto with Abbado, and excellent solo Schubert and a great set of Mozart sonatas (Denon), I thought I'd add this Pires disc to my collection. Unfortunately, it's not as good as those other fine efforts. (Her earlier set of Mozart sonatas is superb, and her 17th Concerto is the finest I've ever heard, with almost indescribable subtlties; I've reviewed that extraordinary disc elsewhere on Amazon.) Pires always plays with polish, but here, with all the polish comes a generic quality, a lack of personality. She's not helped by the orchestra or the conductor, who similarly play by-the-numbers interpretations devoid of any personality. But worse than that, they are shrill at times, and this isn't helped by the close miking. No. 23 is particularly short-changed. This is one of Mozart's deeper works--the slow movement in particular is very unique to his canon, and the only piece he ever wrote in the unusual key of F-sharp minor. This is not the type of "public Mozart" we frequently encounter in his more "brilliant" compositions, but very personal, reflective Mozart, and they reveal a rather quiet, melancholy man. (It's dangerous to attach literal meanings to Mozart's music in general, but this is such an extraordinary gesture that I feel he was trying to say something very personal.) Pires' playing doesn't get under that skin, it's not very convincing, and it's not even especially fluid or beautiful (unusual for her). But even the first movement is made plodding and lifeless by the conductor's choice of tempo.

          As I said, the mikings are a bit close, leading to a bright, sometimes shrill sound. The final impression isn't very favorabe. In this hypercompetitive field, it's hard to recommend you make room on your shelf for this CD unless you are a Pires completist who must have all her recordings. Otherwise, there are better (Casadesus, Brendel, Horowtiz, Haskill, just to name a few) recordings out there.
