Customer Reviews:
Good News/Bad News.......2003-10-10
It is great to find this many galops and marches in one collection; many of these titles are now obscure and rare to find. This band gives a good try with spirit and energy, but thrrere is a lot of sloppy ragged playing also. I also wonder why Mr. Phillips did not engage a euphonium player for his band. The alto sax covering that part gets a little annoying. All things considered--a great program vs. sloppy playing--this disc isn't too bad, but it can be only listened to a little at a time instead of straight through.
A RARE COLLECTION.......2003-10-10
I think it is wonderful to have a collection of marches and galops that are mainly now obscure in one compilation. The music is played with energy and spirit, however this isn't all good news. Unfortunatley there is an abundance of ragged playing, and I am curious to know why Mr, Phillips did not engage a euphonium player with his band.it would have added a lot as the doubled alto sax part is a bit distracting. The collectiom of titles is priceless and wonderful, but one can only take a little listening at a time.
A Definite Improvement!.......2001-02-26
I like to think of this CD as being by "Matthew Phillips and His New & Improved Circus Band", since it in no way resembles the group which did "Circus Spectacular". The playing on this album is well-balanced, clean, and a real joy to listen to (duh, no this is NOT sight reading!), although it still has more of a concert rather than circus band sound, in my opinion. Marches I am particuarly impressed with include White Horse March, American Ranger March and Victory Parade March. If the 60's was the "Golden Age" of band recordings, then the 90's would have to be considered the "Renaissance Period". This album is a perfect example of the many recordings in the last few years of dozens, if not hundreds of previously unrecorded marches and galops (for more examples not available on ..., check out walkingfrog.com). Over half of the selections on this CD are not in my rather voluminous collection, and several others also didn't appear until the 90's. Another plus for this album is a well-written, concise description of the evolution of the relationship of people, horses, and entertainment throughout history. To sum up, this is a must-have for the band music collector!
Thoroughbred Thunder.......2000-12-18
What a delightful recording of Galops and Marches by 11 different composers. Apart from the 2 Sousa Marches I had heard of none of the pieces. I really enjoyed the Marches particularly the 'Cavalry Soldier March' by J.Brockenshire .It is good to come across a recording of pieces that have rarely, if ever, been recorded before. Mathhew Phillips apparently specializes in re-discovereing these kind of pieces. I look forward to any future recordings
Bad Playing.......2000-01-09
Musical selection is wonderful and imaginative. Unfortunateley this CD is full of out-of-tune playing, ragged entrances, equally ragged cutoffs, and generally sounds like a sight-reading session.
This CD does not even meet the standards of top non-professional wind ensembles, let alone a professional band.
