This inexpensively priced 3-CD set of music from the 2006 Lugano Festival with pianist Martha Argerich at its center presents a fascinating cross-section of chamber music, expertly performed. In addition to Argerich, we hear from 15 other instrumentalists - pianists, cellists, violinists, violists, a flugelhorn player (who plays along with Argerich in three of Schumann's Fantasiestücke, to very strange and not very welcome effect), and a wind ensemble made up of members of the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana that plays with cellist Gautier Caupcon in Friedrich Gulda's Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra: a jazzy, definitely eclectic, and playful finale to the third CD. The infrequently played but rapturous Schumann Piano Quartet is a particular treat. Ravel's transcriptions of two Debussy Nocturnes for two pianos played by Sergio Tiempo and Karin Lechner are a delight as well. This is an off-the-beaten-track collection that will fascinate true devotees of chamber music. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Lots of Schumann, not much Argerich, plus some real oddities.......2007-06-08
EMI has gotten into the pleasanat habit of issuing a 3-CD bargain box of Martha Argerich's summer music from Lugano, and they are caviar for chamber music lovers, mixing familiar and unfamiliar works in sterling live performances. It's hard to think of any comparable series meeting such high standards since the heyday of the Marlboro Festival under Rudolf Serkin in the Fifties and Sixties. This 2006 edition is no exception, my only disappointment being the absence of Argerich herself in so many works. She even gives up her place in the two-piano arrangement of Debussy's Nocturnes to her protege Sergio Tiempo (she has been a long-time devotee, if not addict, of two-piano arrangements that almost every other serious musician eschews).
The dominance of works by Schumann reflects Ms. Argerich's personal fondness for him, and she appears in the Piano Quartet, which has enjoyed a wonderful, highly personal reading by Glenn Gould and the Juilliard Qt. (Sony), among others. This one displays every virtue of live musicmaking, with Argerich's fervent, spontaneous playing leading the way. Compared to earlier sets, the 2006 collection contains more rarities and because of all the sSchumann, less representation by great composers. The flugelhorn arrangement of Schumann's Fantasiestucke for clarinet sounds like a joke. The once unknown Tanayev Piano Quintet gets a committed reading that should help to boost its popularity. The Debbusy Nocturnes actually bring pleasure in the two-piano arrangement. You won't be prepared for Gulda's concerto for Cello and Piano, which sounds like three-beer night at your local German jazz club. But its worth a smile and a listen.
In the end, however, this installment might be best left to connoisseurs while newcomers to Argerich's summer festivities should begin with the earlier, more conventional editions.
Here's the listing of works and personnel since Amazon doesn't supply it:
Martha Argerich / Renaud Capucon / Lida Chen / Gautier Capucon - Piano Quartet in Eb op.47 (Schumann).
Gautier Capucon / Gabriela Montero - Sonata for cello and piano No.2 in D op.58 (Mendelssohn).
Sergei Nakariakov / Martha Argerich - Fantasiestucke op.73 - version for flugelhorn and piano (Schumann).
Nicholas Angelich / Renaud Capucon / Gautier Capucon - Piano Trio in D minor op.63 (Schumann).
Lilya Zilberstein / Dora Schwarzberg / Lucy Hall / Nora Romanoff-Schwarzberg / Jorge Bosso - Piano Quintet in G minor op.30 (Taneyev).
Sergio Tiempo / Karin Lechner - Three Nocturnes : Nuages / Fetes (Debussy transcribed for two piano Ravel).
Alissa Margulis / Polina Leschenko - Sonata for violin and piano No.1 (Schnittke).
Gautier Capucon / Alexander Rabinovich-Barakovsky - Concerto for cello and windband (Gulda).

Customer Reviews:
Heavenly.......2007-06-06
A collection of masters that insist that you relax as you listen. An exquisit addition to any music cd collection.
What a value!.......2005-07-26
A wonderful collection of music spanning from the Baroque to the Modern and so Affordable. Each CD is in a full size jewel-case with beautiful cover art - paintings of Renaissance-era angels in muted, slightly reflective, metal-tone inks - all within a box that ties them all together. There are no liner notes in the booklet, just track listings, but the music speaks for itself. It's not completely apparent from the track listing who the composers are, so here's the breakdown: Disc 1 - Vivaldi's "Four Seasons"; Disc 2 - Vivaldi flute concertos; Disc 3 and 4 - Bach Brandonburg concertos; Disc 5 - Bach violin concertos; Disc 6 - Handel concerto grossi; Disc 7 - Handel organ concertos; Disc 8 - Flute concertos by Quantz, Heinchen, Buffardin, Adolph-Hasse; Disc 9 - Mozartt violin concertos; Disc 10 - Mozart horn concertos; Disc 11 - Mozart piano concertos; Disc 12 - Haydn cello concertos; Disc 13 - Haydn violin concertos; Disc 14 - Tchaikovsky violin concerto and piano concerto; Disc 15 - Paganini and Chausson violin concertos; Disc 16 - Bruch and Mendelssohn violin concertos; Disc 17 - Brahms concertos; Disc 18 - Dvorak and Hindesmith cello concertos; Disc 19 - Russian composers Prokofiev, Galzanov and Shoshakovich violin concertos; Disc 20 - Spanish guitar concertos of Rodrigo, Sor, Granados, Albeniz and de Falla.

Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Nice collection .......2007-05-08
Great collection of concerti, some very familiar, some less so. Shortly after purchasing this double CD I had the chance to see the Chicago Symphony perform in Sarasota. Fun to see the principles at work on stage.
A world class collection!.......2006-11-16
It's not every day that you come across a recording that showcases as many elite calibur musicians as this collection does. Not only do you get some of the best names in the CSO, but you also get a tremendous diversity of musical genres to explore the viruosity. Being a horn player myself, I purchased the set for the Konzertstuck for four horns by Schumann. This single piece is worth the purchase of the 2 disk set all by itself. Describing this piece as a 'tour de force' would hardly do it justice, as horn players across the globe would agree. The fantastic four represented here certainly do not disappoint, masterfully executing the tremendous technical hurdles and extreme range requirements with flawless ease. Even though the technical demands are quite substantial, this group never loses sight of the phrasing, balance, and intonation, as can easily happen. Clevenger was most impressive in the Mozart horn concerto #3- an interpretation that I thought was extremely tasteful and pleasing. His command with changing not only of the dynamics of the piece, but also tonal colors to compliment this, is in my opinion unmatched. Adolph Hersith, what more can be said, a legend who played the Haydn to perfection. These are definitely the shining stars on the collection. Not to say the other selections were not outstandingly performed, but perhaps just fall out of the range of my preferred taste. While Jacobs played wonderfully, the tuba concerto was not to my liking as a matter of musical preference. The serenade for horn and tenor was even less appealing to me, and though the performers were stellar, I found the music to be difficult to follow, and repetitive in nature. Let's just call the entire second cd an adventure in specialties. Unless you happen to specialize in the particular instrument that is featured, you are unlikely to find these tracks as 'accessible' as the ones found on disk one. Between the bassoon concerto and Bolero, there is enough sleep aid for even the hard-core insomniac. Without the Konzertstuck, this rating would be a four, with it, it is a six!
First chair players top notch in a top notch orchestra.......2005-07-01
To be completely honest, this album did not interest me at first, even though I am the biggest CSO fan ever. The only reason I stumbled upon it was because I was browsing in a bad CD collection. All they had was generic, tripe recordings of most everything. Well, when I saw this I picked it up because I noticed it was under the DG label and because it had CSO recordings. I soon realized what I had been missing. This CD has probably the best recording ever of the Vaughn-Williams tuba concerto. Jacobs's mastery is held blatantly obvious in this recording, it is simply amazing and inspiring (even though I think his successor Gene Porkorny has a better sound). Another piece which caught my eye was the energetic Konzertstuck by Schumann. By itself the piece already speaks for itself. But, performed correctly, as it is here, the piece becomes heroic statement. The CSO horns play out boldly, without trepidation but alos without assaulting the ears. The sound is amazingly balanced between the four of them and they seem to be veritably unified in their playing, almost if one horn could double or triple stop( understandable?) instead of throwing 4 different players together and forcing them to compete. This is the CSO brass section that I know and love.
The real winner on this CD, however is the Bolero, conducted by Solti. The soloists are obviously all top notch. But espectially effective is the barely audible start with a simple side drum figure mingled with a flute to the deafening, exhilarating climax that closes the piece. If you're a brass person and you're looking for stereotypical Chicago brass, it's right here at the end. Good job Solti, and the CSO. Happy listening
Must-have for CSO fans.......2005-05-04
Recently I had an opportunity to meet with the legendary Bud Herseth, and I wanted a CD to get an autograph. But which one? The fabled archetype of the first trumpet, Herseth is on every recording the CSO made since he started in 1948 until he retired just a couple of years ago. If you want to get into an argument about who the best trumpet player who ever lived was, Herseth's name will center the argument, and the other contenders won't have been as well recorded. This CD turned out to be perfect, the Haydn concerto showcases his remarkable ability to be consistently perfect. I recommend this CD to classical music fans; Herseth, Clevenger, Still, Elliot and Jacobs are the best of the best in symphonic music, and these solo selections are truly magnificent. I recommend this CD especially to CSO fans, there are maybe a dozen symphonies at most in the same league as the CSO, and these principal chairs are one of the main reasons for the continued superiority of the symphony. I also recommend this CD to music students who play french horn, trumpet, tuba, oboe or bassoon. All musicians should strive for this level of magnificence, and though most will never reach this acme, the effort will bring you beyond the average. Lastly, I also recommend the CD to Solti fans, in spite of the fact that there are so many Solti recordings to choose from. You'll appreciate Solti's Bolero, it's my favorite Ravel recording. Oh by the way, I did get Herseth to sign the CD, he has a charming sense of humor and said "well, if I can remember how to spell my name." To which I replied: "Sir, it's printed on the CD."
Absolutely fantastic.......2004-04-14
As a horn player, I must unobjectively confess that there is something quite magical about the work of Dale Clevenger and the CSO horn section from the 70s and 80s.
Perhaps the predigital recording technology during this time
left a little to the listeners imagination. Perhaps the virtuosity and freshness of the performances was something truly
historic. Maybe it is just me.
The Britten Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings and the Schumann Konzertstueck recordings are absolutely my hands down favorites. I cannot listen to these without getting excited about horn playing again. And, having them on CD is great.
The other performances on the CD are also excellent - so this recording is by no means just for horn players!
Now, if DG would just rerelease the wonderful Schumann Symphony set that the Konzertstueck was originally on!

Album Description
During his brief life (cut short by pneumonia when he was just 35), Charles Griffes was able to compose music of distinctive beauty. He was fascinated by the music of the French-Impressionist composers Debussy and Ravel but was also influenced by the Russian sounds of Scriabin and Mussorgsky and a German post-romantic idiom. Ultimately, Griffes found his own unique voice that blended all of these characteristics. Griffes had a passion for verse and almost all of his orchestral scores are linked in some way to poetic or literary ideas. The works on this disc are notable examples of Griffes' "tone pictures" with the exception of the Poem for Flute and Orchestra, a miniature tone poem without associated text or images.
Customer Reviews:
This covers him..........2006-06-20
NAXOS with artful readings by JoAnn Falletta and the Buffalo Phil., and some superb engineering, give's us an affordable value CD of Charles Griffe's limited French-Impressionist influenced orchestral output(he died at 35). All the works included on this disc with the exception of "Poem for flute and orch." are linked to some poetic or literary ideas. His masterpiece "The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan" is his most memorable composition. About 12min. of frenzied paganistic lust featuring low bass and interjections of howling brass. With the exception of the "Bacchanale"(more tempered than Pleasure Dome)all the other works are less memorable and less colorful than their titles imply, only showing Griffes's Ravel-Debussy style. My 3 star rating does not berate the performers or production, only the minimal influence of this composer.
A Must-Have Recording.......2004-04-27
Charles Tomlinson Griffes (1884-1920) was the great American what-might-have-been composer. He died tragically young at 35 of pneumonia; it gives one pause to think that with a normal life-span he might have continued composing into the 1950s! Although those familiar with his best-known works, 'The White Peacock' and 'The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan,' both presented here, might assume that he was a Debussy-and-water impressionist, this is far from the case. In fact, those two pieces are much better than this description makes them out to be, each showing clear evidence of Griffes's own personal voice and a real feel for original form. As he progressed in his too-short career, he began taking into account the kinds of things that Scriabin, Stravinsky, and even Schoenberg were doing and some of his later works show these influences.
All but one of the pieces here were originally written for piano; I recall playing 'The White Peacock' and its companion piece, 'The Fountain of the Acqua Paola' when I was a youngster, and remember the visceral thrill of all that misty and evocative impressionism. On this disc the lone exception written originally for orchestra is the lovely 'Poem for Flute and Orchestra,' played exquisitely here by Carol Wincenc, one of the most musical flutists now before the public. The piece itself has passages that sound for all the world like they come from the world of English pastoralism with modal melodies and hornpipe-y 6/8 rhythms, and of the Celtic-twilight mist-world reminiscent of Bax.
'The White Peacock,' is followed by 'Three Poems of Fiona McLeod' for soprano and orchestra, sung with real feeling here by Barbara Quintiliani whose lovely voice is a real plus; there is an incipient wobble at the highly-placed climactic moments, and unfortunately texts by Fiona McLeod (the nom de plume of poet William Sharp) are not included, but these song still manage to make an emotional impact. They are 'The Lament of Ian the Proud,' 'Thy Dark Eyes to Mine,' and 'The Rose of the Night.'
'Bacchanale' is a scherzo which could as easily have been named 'Orientale' except that there are some barbaric yawps included along the way. This is a lively, exotic-sounding piece that I'd never heard before. 'Clouds' comes from the piano suite, 'Roman Sketches,' that includes the aforementioned 'White Peacock' and 'The Fountain of Acqua Paola.' It attempts, successfully, to depict the 'golden domes and towers' of a cloud city.
'Three Tone Pictures,' each inspired by a specific poem, includes 'The Lake at Evening' inspired by Yeats's 'The Lake Isle of Innisfree'; 'The Vale of Dreams' and 'The Night Winds' were inspired by Poe's 'The Sleeper' and 'The Lake' respectively. These three tone poems all featured a prominent orchestral piano part and come close, to my mind, to the greatness of Debussy's 'Ibéria' in their sonic depiction of specific scenes.
The final piece recorded here is 'The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan,' inspired of course by Coleridge's great poem and depicting loosely the story of Xanadu, the hidden 'pleasure dome' belonging to the Asian emperor in which a woman cries for her spectral lover. Particularly effective is the portrayal of 'a mighty fountain momently was forced; / Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst / Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail, / Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail: / And 'mid these dancing rocks at once and ever / It flung up momently the sacred river [Alph].'
Here is must be said that the direction by Jo Ann Falletta and the playing of her Buffalo Philharmonic are beyond praise. This orchestra has played an important part in recording much of what is good in American music, going back at least to those important recordings of Ruggles's music done when Michael Tilson Thomas was their music director, and even before that to the days of Lukas Foss's tenure. There are rare moments of uncertainty or rhythmic insecurity but the group is also clearly one of the best orchestras in America currently. I'm delighted that they have a three-record contract with Naxos to record American music. Earlier they had recorded music of Frederick Converse and it, too, was a winner. I am eager to learn what the third of their recordings will be.
Urgently recommended.

"Abblassen" Used in "Sunday Morning".......2006-02-01
The CBS News show "Sunday Morning" is using "Abblassen" as their theme music.
fun trumpets.......2005-09-13
"Masters of The Trumpet" is a simple and accurate title for this 2- disc collection. The recordings cover trumpet/cornet literature ranging from Gabrieli to Stravinsky.
Especially enjoyable moments are Don Smithers playing Reiche's "Abblasen" & Armando Ghitalla's work on Stravinsky's "Marche Royale" (L'Histoire du Soldat).
Rafael Mendez sounds as though he has more fun playing than should be legal...exciting!..and Adolph Herseth is a pleasure to hear whether he's playing in "delicate mode" or shattering asteroids with his power.

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Instrospective, contemplative music.......2005-01-29
The music of Alan Hovhaness to me
always seems that it tries to take
me to different places, somtimes
deep journyes into the mind and
the imagination, other times to
certain places in particular.
This time with "Star Dawn" symphony
we travel to space and its endless
distances...As for the "Grand
Final Processional", we go back
late renaissance, early baroque
periods."The Flowering Peach" was
written for a play, concidering
the fact which writing music
exclusively for plays is mostly
an out of date practice, Hovhaness
does a wonderful job, I really like
his music, and his approach towards it.
Christian Linberg and Ohio State University
Band are well suited for the job, this
is a great recording...Band music at its
very best!!!!
