5 out of 5 stars Bernstein is highly original and personal in Pictures.......2007-02-20

Two things conspired to keep me from discovering this one-of-a-kind 'Pictures at an Exhibition' sooner. First, there are enough great recordings to go around from Reiner, Karajan, Stokowksi--name your own. Second, I assumed that Bernstien would conduct this thrice-familiar piece simply as a commercial duty. I was wrong: this is the most personal performance among the great ones. Bernstein has ideas and feelings in every section, and with the NY Phil. at its virtuosic best, the whole thing is an enchanting discovery.

Bernstein's secret is that he goes to the heart of the music rather than just conducting Ravel's brilliant orchestration. As a result, we feel we are looking at separate paintings on the wall, just as Mussorgsky intended, each with its own flavor, more often than not tinged with melancholy (after all, Mussorgsky's artist friend had died). Compared to this account, all the others I own seem a bit shallow and glittery--this one is pure soul.

The sound is impeccable in the current remastering, and we get two outstanding fillers. First, a thrilling Night on Bald Mountain that gives Stokowski's a run for its money while retaining more musical integrity. Second, Bernstein accompanies his great fried, mezzo Jennie Tourel, in four Songs and Dances of Death (in clean early Fifties mono). It's interesting to hear a non-Slavic voice in these pieces, and our two performers are so ebullient that they turn in one of the least grim versions on disc.

5 out of 5 stars Best recording I could find..........2004-03-19

After going through 8 different recordings of this Pictures at an Exhibition, I concluded that this one is the best of the lot. All the others were somewhat (or extremely) lackluster. This one is much more alive. I recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag.......2000-11-13

Bernstein's "Pictures at an Exhibition" is somewhat lackluster and flat sounding. I own a Stanley Black recording on vinyl that sounds better than this piece! However, "Songs and Dances of Death" is very good and may be worthwhile to you.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre Pictures....Good Songs and Dances.......2000-10-24

Songs and Dances of Death, here performed by Bernstein and Jennie Tourel, is the only reason why anyone would need this CD. However, given the relative brevity of the piece, it really can't save the entire CD. Bernstein's Pictures at an Exhibition is fairly mediocre...3 stars at best. For a more satisfying recording, try Fritz Reiner conducting the Chicago Symphony on RCA's Living Stereo series. Though by now a cliché, the Chicago brass is really amazing in that recording. By comparison, the New York brass seems pinched and small. Just compare the trumpet solos on the first tracks of both CDs. Herseth (of Chicago) displays great control as always over his instrument, while the New York principal's high notes sound wobbled. And that's only 15 seconds into the CD!! The Reiner CD also includes Mussorgsky's Night on the Bare Mountain along with many other Russian show-pieces like Tchaikovsky's Marche Slave. Best of all is that the RCA CD costs just as much as the Bernstein CD!! Therefore, unless you are looking for a recording of the Songs and Dances of Death (mono recording here, by the way), you can do much better than this CD.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! FANTASTIC!!.......1999-06-22

Just the Pictures on a Exhibition would have been worth it, but with the added Songs and Dances of Death, this CD is truly amazing. Get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Mussorgsky, the Magnificent.......2007-01-12

Mussorgsky is one of the world's most outstanding composers although many people would not recognize his name unless they are interested in music. Any music teacher should have this CD in his/her collection. It is an excellent one for teaching tonality in the classroom. Musorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" is good for teaching timbre, the unique sounds of various instruments. Young people can be drawn into classical music through the use of this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant Budget Buy.......2006-01-09

Don't you just love it when classic recordings get reissued on CD at a budget price?! Such is the case with this Modest Mussorgsky title in the "Universal Classics" series, featuring recordings originally made for Deutsche Grammophon. These are arguably the composer's three greatest works -- the Ravel orchestration of "Pictures at an Exhibition," "Songs and Dances with Death," and the perennial scary favorite, "A Night on Bald Mountain" -- so for the casual fan this is his best music at a great price. But this CD has rewards for the more experienced listener as well. Conductor Carlo Maria Giulini, one of my personal favorites, puts in a distinguished performance on the "Pictures." He has the Chicago Symphony Orchestra performing brilliantly, and the 1977 analog stereo sound is exceptional -- it is one of my favorite accounts and I own more than a dozen. Conductor Georg Solti leads the same orchestra (from the same year), along with bass soloist Sergei Alexashin, in Shostakovich's orchestration of the "Death" songs. They are also very good, but those familiar with my reviews know I don't care too terribly much for vocal works. Barenboim, who I enjoy very much as a pianist but less so with baton in hand, again leads the Windy City SO in a digital account of "Bald Mountain" from 1998. There is nothing disappointing with this rendition, but nothing remarkable either. But what do you expect -- how can anyone ever hope to top the Reiner/Chicago version? In all, with classical budget lines beginning to inexplicably disappear (like Sony's "Essential Classics" series -- what's up with that?!), I'm delighted that UNI has made these quality recordings available again at such an inexpensive price.

5 out of 5 stars A Mussorgsky feast beyond praise.......2006-06-11

It was incredibly generous of DG to throw toegther these great performances--one of them legenday--in a bargain two-fer. The legendary performance, of course, is Richter's 1958 Pictures at an Exhibition performed in concert. The rights are owned by Philips, but I don't know if their latest remastering has been used here. The complaints about dreadful sonics are justified: the piano is far away and tinny, the Sofia audience coughs continuously--some of them are lucky to have left with their lungs intact--and there is a noisy exhaust fan in the foreground. It's a testimony to Richter's incandescent reading that it survives beyond all obstacles.

Another high point is the orchestral reading of Pictures under Giulini with the CSO. This was a famous recording in its day, because Giulini took the thrice-familiar music seriously, a bit slower than usual, adding many individual touches. Maybe his approach becomes ponderous and too serious at times, but it's one of a kind, and the solo winds in the orchestra are a delight.

Actually, I was most moved by Vishnievskaya's selection of songs, recorded in the Soviet Union with Igor Markevitch adding his superlative accompaniments--this is Mussorgsky singing of the highest order. But so is Fassbaender's Songs and Dances of Death, despite her lack of Slavic authenticity. Maazel bombs through Night on Bald Mountain with suitable thrills.

In all, this Panorama two-fer can't be faulted. It's one of the very best in the seeries, and several of the choicest things on it are otherwise out of print.

5 out of 5 stars A STRONG REBUTTLE to the "bad" reviews........2006-05-19

155 minutes of music and one reviewer gives these CDs 1 star for couging here and there during 7 minutes of Richter's Pictures recital. Not continually mind you. I DON'T GET IT!
A reviewer doesn't like vocal music..so 2 stars. I DON'T GET IT! Just because one does not like "classical" vocals, doesn't mean they stink.
This is over 2 1/2 hours at single CD budget price. Geez...
Giulini gives a superbly recorded THRILLING performance of Pictures that, in my humble opinion, is second only to Reiner's. Also with the CSO 15 years earlier.
This 34+ minutes alone is worth the price of this collection.
The excerpts from Boris Gudonov are considered one of the best performances in the catalog (Karajan/VPO). 29 minutes and a good way to determine if you want to purchase the complete opera 3 CD set for over $30+ bucks.
Markevich/Vishnevskaya is considered to be the definitive version for the "6 songs".
The Kovanshchina prelude (Dawn on The Moskva River) is one the most heart rending themes in the canon. Simply gorgeous 6 minute piece of music.
I could go on and on.
Sure there are a few "gaffs" on these CDs. Maazel brings in Bald Mountain in under 10 minutes. Whew!
But hey...kudos to the orchestra for being able to play that well, that fast without stumbling over each other. Quite exhilerating acually.
And Then there is Richter's famous/"infamous" Pictures. Yes the annoying cough and a not so sonic recording. But anyone looking for just this track should already have been aware of this problem. "Classisists" have been talking about this problem for 50+ years. Obviously it can't be fixed. But still several coughs in 30+ minutes just makes it sound as live a performance as it is.
So let's recap...155 minutes of music with maybe parts of 15 minutes of minor problems for DISCOUNT bucks. Pretty good math I'd say. Equals 5 STARS where I come from.
Overall, this is an excellent CD for those who want Mussorgsky's major orchestral output in one package at a bargain price.
Top conductors, top orchestras, great performances and, except for Richter's Pictures, GREAT SONICS.
If you want a truly magnificent solo piano Pictures try Pletnev's on Virgin Classics. It will blow you away. And you get the bonus of his own piano transcription of Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty which is even better.
ENJOY!

2 out of 5 stars Review for Richter's "Pictures" Only.......2006-04-24

I was thrilled to find that Deutsche Grammophon has reissued Sviatoslav Richter's famous Sophia performance of "Pictures." I have owned it on tape, but have until now not had it on CD. I was surprised by previous reviews of this edition, since I thought that the explosive coughing had been toned down substantially. My tape broke years ago, so maybe my memory is off. But the re-engineering of this performace has been one of the most needed "retrofits" in the entire classical catalogue. The sound quality of this edition is certainly much better than the old Polydor record.

I also will refrain from entering the "Is it the greatest Pictures ever?"-debate. It is my favorite. One sometimes hears critics dismiss the piano--thus Mussorgsky's--version as monochromatic. But Richter presents a much more percussive version than most others, which may be why some people don't care for it. (My dad played this piece with a more Romantic reading.) It's a matter of taste: I have never cared for the Ravel version, probably because the percussive aspect doesn't translate into orchestration.

I almost never write music reviews, since I'd hate to convince people to plunk down good money on a CD that conforms to my taste but not theirs. BUT, if you have enjoyed this performace in the past . . .

I give five stars to Richter recital, which amazes me still. I agree that his deliberate "clunkers" are distracting. But having listened to this performance for almost twenty years, it is the "correct" playing of Pictures that now jars me. If you love this performance, as I clearly do, you'll be happy to have this CD. Just don't Google the Hartmann pictures which inspired Mussorgsky. It's disillusioning, but they aren't very good!

1 out of 5 stars A bad whooping cough in 1958 in Sofia, Bulgaria.......2006-04-17

I was listening to the magnificient percussion and
overall sound of this double release, from 2000, #469 169-2,
when throughout the 1st CD, which opens up with the Mussorgsky
number PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION, there's an irritating
musician in the room, exhibiting signs of a bad whooping cough,
thereby totally destroying the 20 minutes or so recording!

There are many soft passages throughout the number, and
it is just incredible that DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON allowed the
bad caugh distractions and irritations (cough! cough! cough!)
to stay on the tape!

Unbelievable! It's so bad, I thought about unloading this
art work, at a second hand music store for a buck and a half,
although I surely paid more than $20 for this double CD release
a few years ago.

I don't care much for the vocal pieces, either.

Aside from that, the remainder of the release is very strong,
so ...I can't bring myself to unload it....yet, anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Giant performance!.......2005-06-03

Carlo Maria Giulini has been to my mind one of the most aristocratic, intelligent, wisdom and remarkable conductors in the last Century. Born in 1914, Giulini owns that special touch of genius that has been proved in several ocassions.
There are several works in the Symphonic repertoire whose meaning depends in last instance of your personal world's approach. The list wold be extremely long but briefly I would name five classic works: The Eroica, The First of Mahler, The Ninth of Bruckner, The fourth of Nielsen and this work.
What do you demand from this work? Fireworks, nostalgic approach, musical musculature, effectism or tonal poolish?
Besides a great amount of recorded versions, there is however, a relatively small number of succesful performances from the early forties with Arturo Toscanini, Guido Cantelli and Igor Markevitch in the fifties, Dorati in the sixties and then Markevitch again and Giulini in the seventies.
Giulini gives this work a remarkable stature, enriching the score with sumptuous details and rubatos, smart accents, inflexions, color sense and above all a noblesse spirit that personally I haven't listened in any other previous version.
Go for this golden treasure recording. But do not expect great fireworks exercises. Giulini never searched the gallery' s applause. He was a honest and original master by himself: his personal landmark.

4 out of 5 stars Not colourful, but more slavic.......2006-12-28

While the Ravel orchestration is no doubt a masterpiece, I sometimes find it too colourful, in particular the saxophone in the Old Castle, where Funtek prefers the English horn - the effect is wonderful and I much prefer his election to Ravel's. In addition, Funtek does not omit the Promenade between Samuel Goldenberg und Schmuyle and Limoges. In general, the sounds are more "slavic" in character than Ravel's orchestration. Perhaps not "genial", as Ravel's, but I think closer to the spirit of the Mussorgsky work. Both composers tackled the orchestration independently and at the same time (1922).

2 out of 5 stars Some things should not be done..........2004-01-26

...such as remaking Gone With The Wind, writing another book on the battle of Gettysburg, and another orchestration of Pictures At An Exhibition. Ravel got it right the first time. The Finnish Radio Symphony's playing on this recording is uninspiring, perhaps because they knew that if this were the only orchestration of the Moussourgsky's piano piece, Pictures would never have become an all-time concert favorite. Save big bucks and avoid this version. Instead, buy the venerable Reiner/Chicago Symphony recording to get the Ravel orchestration and Adolph Herseth, the greatest orchestral trumpeter of all time, playing in his prime.

4 out of 5 stars Different version of Pictures.........2002-01-18

Interesting version of Pictures... - this is not the Ravel orchestration, but is by Leo Funtek. Not as much orchestral color as Ravel's, though. The Night on Bald Mountain and Songs and Dances of Death are well performed.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Singing.......2001-11-05

This album is worth it just for "Songs & Dances", it's
exceptional - not that the other pieces aren't great.

Europe is heard bursting out of the tension and isolation of war in recordings that--because of their pre-stereo status--have been long unavailable in any form. Pianist Monique Haas performs in combustible collaborations with conductors Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt and Ferenc Fricsay, respectively, in Ravel's Concerto in G and Stravinsky's Capriccio, reflecting the postwar German enthusiasm for the French-based music they'd been deprived of. Fricsay's Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 is one of the best ever, the young Amadeus Quartet is far more alert and inventive in Schubert's "Rosamunde" quartet than its more mature self, and the late conductor Fritz Lehmann has an incomparable way with Bach's chorales in Christmas Oratorio excerpts. Violinist Wolfgang Schneiderhan is heard in his earlier (and better) Beethoven sonata recordings with Wilhelm Kempf, and the younger, less-mannered Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau sings Brahms's Four Serious Songs. Two Russian greats, David Oistrakh and Sviatoslav Richter, bringing their customary mastery, respectively, to Brahms and Schumann, as does the electrifying Igor Markevitch in his lesser-known, 1953 recording of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. Lorin Maazel, conducting selections from Berlioz's Romeo and Juliet, is full of fine ideas but not a lot of style. --David Patrick Stearns

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I grew up with this recording.......2006-05-10

My family had a cassette of Evgeny Svetlanov's wonderful rendering of Mussorgsky's organic "Pictures at an Exhibition" when I was very young, and we would listen to this countless times. We believed that this would be the only recording of that piece that we would listen to. Now that this piece is on CD (courtesy of Moscow Studio Archives) I'm very glad that I can hear a better sound for this. This is an ultimate (and under-appreciated) performance that holds true to the composer's intended atmospheres. To me, no other conductor comes close to Svetlanov (especially Carlo Maria Guilini; he takes it way too slow) and no other orchestra can bring out such passion and power. The only other orchestra that comes close is the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (with Yuri Temirkanov).

Along with "Songs & Dances of Death," "The Capture of Kars," and a selection from "Khovanshchina," this should be a great buy for all Mussorgsky fans. A+
