Set to a text by Guillaume Apollinaire that combines nonsensical images with some serious underlying thoughts, Les mamelles de Tirésias is a 52-minute, two-act operatic romp and makes a fascinating contrast to Poulenc's more familiar La voix humaine. With his usual pert lyricism and cabaret-like rhythmic underpinnings, the composer keeps his listeners thoroughly entertained. Along with Apollinaire, Max Jacobs was a leader of the Dada movement, and some of his rather illogical poems were delightfully set as a cantata for baritone and small instrumental ensemble as Le bal masqué. Wolfgang Holzmair sings effectively, as does the entire cast for Les mamelles. The orchestra plays with great proficiency, and the international cast sings well. If the opera performance lacks the charm of the early-1950s Angel recording by André Cluytens, there is no use crying over spilt milk. The new version is far better recorded and is the only one currently available. --Paul Turok
Customer Reviews:
Funny stuff, absurdities to think about.......2006-06-28
Poulenc's music does not disappoint, as usual. The recording quality is excellent and the performance is filled with vitality. Comes with full libretto in a nice colorful package.
Essential for Poulenc students, delightful for all.......2003-08-15
I would concur with those who assert that the Cluytens-led recording from the 1950s has a bit more stylistic panache than this one. However, there is a most interesting detail pointed out on the labeling of this disc: Assuming the documentation is correct, what we get here is a "1963" revision of Poulenc's opera that premiered in 1947 but, as pointed out in Carl Schmidt's book "Entrancing Muse: A Documented Biography of Francis Poulenc" (Pendragon, 2001), was actually completed in 1945. Schmidt also informs us that Poulenc went to Milan in December of 1962 to oversee plans for an April 1963 production at Milan's Piccola Scala. (As many Poulenc fans would point out, the composer never saw the new production, succumbing to a heart attack in his Paris apartment in January of 1963.) And so, I wonder: Could it be that he had made revisions to the score for the then-prospective Milan production? Listening to this performance led by Ozawa, my ear picks up numerous instrumental details that are either obscured in the drily-recorded Cluytens or -- am I nuts to suspect? -- better projected in the revised score. Finally, I'd like to add my own appreciation for the dapper work of the chorus in this performance, particularly their post-duel number and the rapid-fire finales of both Acts. Warmly recommended!
A fine Poulenc disc.......2002-05-10
This Les Mamelles is probably not Poulencs most famous work but dont miss this fun, surrealistic opera because it has beutiful french music and Barbara Bonney sings this extremly good.
Ozawa lead his Japanese Orchestra through this piece by french elegance and the story, surrealistic as it is, has something to tell about modern society, men and women. It is fun, crazy and serious.
Filler... Le bal masque is another fine piece and this disc has a fantastic sound.
A surprisingly good disc.
A Delightful and Charming Opera.......2002-04-05
I was unfamiliar with this opera until I heard a performance over the radio from the Met in New York. The music was so delightful that I had to have a performance for myself. This one, conducted by Seiji Ozawa is excellent indeed. The earlier recording of this opera by Andre Cluytens is likewise excellent, and features Poulenc's favorite, soprano Denise Duval. Sonically, that recording is quite dated (48 years old at present) and the Ozawa recording certainly measures up to the Cluytens with an excellent cast and fabulous playing by the Saito Kinen Orchestra. Both recordings compliment each other.
The opera is based on a Surreal play by Guillame Apollinaire, and Poulenc entered into the buffoonery by complementing Apollinaire's puns with a musical equivalent. Poulenc's music is charming and melodious. The cast is superb and includes Barbara Bonney, Jean-Philippe Lafont, Jean-Paul Fouchecourt and Graham Clark. Le Bal masque, a setting of poems by Max Jacob and included as filler, is also well played and sung by Wolfgang Holzmair, who sings the Policeman in the opera. This is an excellent disc that belongs in every collection of French opera.
Delightful work, better executed in 1953 on EMI.......2001-04-29
This Ozawa recording is fine if it's all you can get and don't know the work, which is a real gem, a must for anyone who appreciates Poulenc's blend of the bittersweet and the boulevard. It's useful also for the sound quality, which reveals the details of the score. But for Parisian style, for idiom - and incidentally for diction, pace the Australian reviewer - the 1953 recording under André Cluytens, with the supremely chic Denise Duval perfect in the title role, can't be beaten - if you can find it...

Customer Reviews:
This is my favorite of the series if that's possible.......2002-05-10
I discovered the music of Francis Poulenc quite by accident when I was a youngster when I heard his Model Animals on the radio. I bought an old Columbia Records recording of the composer playing and conducting some of the works on this CD. A good mixure of small group playing and duo piano compositions which I think I like the best. Thank you Naxos for giving us this great opportunity to enjoy these works which have been ignored by the big record companies for so many years. You can go wrong with this.

i like poulenc!
his music gives me a great deal of joy. and it's so easy to choreograph dances to! like many artists, there is a certain sameness, but it is interesting to see how the sameness is touched by the many things a person can experience in life like death, growing old. and even though the sonata for clarinet and piano was written toward the end of poulenc's life, it shows he still loved living. and his joys were simple and many.

Great Disc.......2004-04-09
I had the pleasure of being able to watch the Labeque sisters perform the Poulenc live in a recent subscription concert with the New York Philharmonic. Needless to say, the two of them gave a brilliant interpretation of the concerto that left the audience blown away.
As for the piece of music, it was written during the height of Poulenc's career, and is a great showcase of the composers' style. While not without it's mellower moments, the concerto is a charming work, full of nostalgic melodies and ravishing colors, from heavy dampered lyrical lines in the piano to proud jumping staccatos in the trombones and tuba.
A worthwile disc. Definately look into it.
Better than 5 stars, one of the best recordings ever!.......1999-06-13
This is just a beautiful and amazing CD. Just mavelous. It plays some music is a great way. The concerto is with out a doubt the best part of the pianists, but also the sonata by Poulenc is great.

A singer's singer.......2001-11-22
Jose Van Dam is in splendid voice on this interesting collection of songs by 20th century composers. The warm recording quality beautifully complements Van Dam's rich baritone, and Kent Nagano conducts with great empathy throughout.
I didn't especially care for Frank Martin's songs, but the remainder of the disc was a pleasure. Martin's music - to my ears at least - is not strong on melodic convention, especially in comparison with Ravel and Ibert, two of the other composers represented here.
It's fascinating to compare the two sets of songs written specifically for the 1933 Don Quichotte movie project (which, incidentally, starred Chaliapin). Both Ravel and Ibert submitted songs for the movie without knowing the other was involved, and it was to Ibert's considerable embarrassment that his songs were chosen over the efforts of his mentor. But he needn't have worried. The Ibert songs are sublimely orchestrated, and ultimately have the melodic edge over Ravel's pretty but standard efforts. Van Dam sings them all with his customary attention to the phrasing, and his warm, satisfying baritone. I was particularly moved by his singing of Ibert's Death of Don Quichotte, and few listeners will be unaffected by his sustained and heartrending "Ah!!" during the concluding bars of this song. Van Dam has recorded these songs before with piano only, but here his singing is even more finely nuanced and affecting.
The cheeky songs by Poulenc that conclude the CD are great fun, and Van Dam makes the most of the comic opportunities provided.
All in all, a great disc and a fine souvenir of an often-overlooked singer.
Exemplary singing by van Dam in wide-ranging recital.......2001-10-15
"From the Sublime to the Ridiculous" or "From the Sacred to the Profane" would be good titles for this attractive program, recorded in 1990. Martin's sequences of monologues from Hugo von Hofmannsthal's play "Jedermann" (Everyman) ranks among the great cycles of the 20th century, tracing in 6 succinct, powerful songs the spiritual journey of a wealthy young man suddenly faced with the prospect of death. At the other extreme we have Poulenc's boisterous, outrageous settings of nonsensical Cubist poems by Max Jacob; in between, 2 sets of songs inspired by Cervantes' Don Quixote, a mix of the high-minded and the earthy. Jose van Dam gives first-rate performances of all the works, with fine legato, excellent diction and great depth of feeling, combined with great natural reserve and dignity (and unexpected comic flair in the Poulenc). His performance of the final Ibert song, the Death of Don Quixote, is especially moving, and beautifully sung. Kent Nagano and the Lyons Opera Orchestra, and the chamber ensemble in the Poulenc, give fine support, in very good sound. A reservation: to my taste Nagano is overly Romantic in parts of the Martin songs, with overemphatic brass and excessively "expressive" string playing - this composer's music fares best when there is a balance between emotional fullness and austerity (van Dam certainly captures this in his singing). Texts for all pieces, translations for all but the Poulenc (heavily dependent on French word-play) and lively notes by Roger Nichols. A fine album.
