This is the "lighter side" of Bartok--and yes, he did have one! The Dance Suite is a delicious collection of authentic Hungarian dances arranged in a single movement. Each dance is introduced by a refrain, or ritornello (as it's called in the music biz), and they all come back for a brief bow in the extended finale. The Divertimento was composed in Switzerland in the space of just a few days, and though not without its more serious moments, it's a generally witty, melodic piece for string orchestra. The other two works are just what the titles suggest: musical illustrations that will engage your imagination and set your toes tapping. If I'm not mistaken, this is the only installment of Boulez's Bartok cycle for DG that contains no major work, unless you count the genial Divertimento for strings from 1939. Everything else comes in bits and pieces. The Dance Suite offers energetic homage to folk materials from Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and oddly enough, Arab North Africa. The more negligible pieces on this CD are the Two Images, which sound like castoffs from The Wooden Prince, and the Hungarian Sketches, which are simple orchestrations of even simpler piano miniatures.

For such a fragmented colleciton to work requires a burst of energy and elan. Sadly, they are noticeably missing from Boulez's straight-faced, sometimes bland performances, which date from 1992 and 1993 in Chicago. I can see why DG waited to publish these recordings until 1996, but they would have shown off better as fillers to major works. As they stand, they are pleasant enough musically, but I've heard much more committed readings of each piece elsewhere. Maybe the more infectious and warmer Ivan Fischer recordings on Philips would be a better alternative.

This disc of four Bartok pieces, performed by Pierre Boulez and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, is a very accessible introduction to this iconoclastic twentieth century composer. The first work, "Dance Suite," is just about as jovial and carefree as Bartok gets. "Two Pictures" initially paints a serene and almost pastoral picture, then turns more haunting. "Hungarian Sketches" is next and it is one of my favorite Barotk compositions. This recording was my third version -- the first two being Antal Dorati's on Mercury Living Presence and Fritz Reiner's on RCA Living Stereo. It is particularly fun to compare this Boulez "Hungarian Sketches" to the Reiner one as they were both recorded by the Chicago Symphony, yet nearly forty years apart. It is safe to say the C.S.O. owned this piece in both decades. The Boulez disc ends with Bartok's "Divertimento," the album's longest and most austere composition. Compared to other Bartok CDs I have, this title is fairly easy listening, but don't let that fool you because "Divertimento/Dance Suite" is incredible, creative, challenging classical music.

      Another marvelous showcase for the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, for its distinguished music director, Iona Brown, and for that vivid Chandos sound--so warm, natural, and full-bodied in these works for strings. The main musical challenge is the Bartók Divertimento, written in the atmosphere of impending world war in 1939, yet everywhere containing echoes of the interest in folk song that so occupied the composer in his earlier years. The familiar Bartók trademarks are there, but, all in all, for the first-timer, this is a less daunting introduction to his music than many, especially given such a fully committed, riveting performance. No problems in approaching the winning melodies of the two Janácek works, but few in a "blind tasting" would guess he was the composer. These are early works from the 1870s, when Janácek was under the spell of Dvorák, although they also owe their inspiration to Baroque dance. There is little sign of the passionate, individual voice of the years to come, but the charm of these pieces belies the composer's own estimation that they were "worthless." And here and there (try the scherzo of the Suite), there are opportunities for virtuosic display--which the NCO eagerly seizes upon. --Andrew Green

      Isaac Stern is, arguably, the best interpreter of classical music there is. His fleshy vibrato and excellent phrasing incorporates his feeling into this set. The Brahms is superb as Stern expresses love, grief, confusion, depression, and eventually redemption throughout the CD. His duo with Eugen Istomin of the Beethoven Violin Sonatas are the best in my library. Same with the Schubert with Daniel Barenboim as his accompanist. Bartok could have been brushed up upon. The intonation was just a tad off. The Franck CD is superb. The Bartok is THE main source for this piece because of Stern's collaboration with the actual composer. All in all, this set ends Stern's legacy with his favorite encores; the best played upon them all.

          Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht opens this stimulating program of 20th century pieces for string orchestra. It's an expansion of a piece originally written for a string sextet. Most performances by a larger ensemble, whether in concert or on disc, are overblown, with muddy textures. Not here. Zehetmair and the excellent Swiss players give an interpretation notable for its transparency as well as its intensity and wide dynamic range (characteristics shared by the other works on this superbly recorded disc). The Bartók Divertimento features playing of consummate polish and a concentrated power rarely heard in this work. The novelty is Veress's Four Transylvanian Dances. Despite the title, it's no lighthearted romp; Veress, like his mentor, Bartók, clothes serious purpose in folkish clothes. The Hungarian melodies lend a lighthearted touch to the second movement, but the opening Lassu conveys pathos; the finale is based on fierce, stomping rhythms that reach beyond mere village dances; and the longest movement is a solemn, nostalgia-drenched, slow movement. --Dan Davis

          The Yorkshireman Reg Kell became famous for using vibrato in the classical world when it was unfashionable. He used it tastefully, and other artists such as Jack Brymer and Emma Johnson have continued to use it. He also had a series of tutorials with Benny Goodman (for Goodman's benefit) which led to Goodman changing his embouchure from the upper teeth on mouthpiece to the upper lip - as well as lower, -on mouthpiece, which perhaps in Goodmans's case was not a good move, as he had it right the first time!.

          However these recordings originally came out a very long time ago in the early days of vinyl, and a re-issue is long overdue. Kell's excursion in to light music is interesting, though he stops well short of anything resembling jazz, although he had earlier recorded one record with Bert Ambrose's band in the 1940 which was the nearest he got, - but that is not included here. His main forte is in the works of Mozart, Weber, Beethoven and Brahms, but he also plays Bartok and Templeton. It shows what an accomplished performer he was. All were recorded after he left the UK to live and play in America.

          This set shows his rightful place as a performer in the history of clarinet playing. He had raised the standard of the time, and had the benefits of improved recording techniques and length of play boudaries were removed with the LP record.

              Founded by illustrious musicians including pianist Rudolf Serkin, the Marlboro Festival's been an incubator for talented young musicians who rehearse and perform with established veterans in what Serkin proudly described as "a republic of equals." This 50th anniversary album is drawn from concerts recorded between 1969 and 1997 in sound that ranges from very good to excellent. Repertory reflects Marlboro's huge range, from the rare four-hand piano Marches by Beethoven to compelling contemporary works by Kurtág and Ligeti. All performances are on the highest level. The Verdi String Quartet gets a warmly thrustful reading from a foursome led by one Serkin's favorite violinists, Pina Carmirelli, and the first disc ends with a perceptive early Mendelssohn masterpiece, the Quartet, Op. 13. The highlight of the set is a memorable Bartók Divertimento for Strings with a string orchestra composed of top chamber and orchestral players conducted incisively by Sandor Vegh. And the Kurtág works were rehearsed under the composer's watchful eye. This is more than a simple tribute to the festival, although visitors to the festival in southern Vermont will want it as a souvenir. For the rest of us, this is an eminently desirable collection of excellent performances of great music. --Dan Davis

              Bridge Records is pleased to issue this two-disc set, specially selected from the Marlboro Music Festival archives by the festival's co-directors - Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida. Disc One includes works by Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Verdi; Disc Two, an all-Hungarian disc, features Bartok, Kurtag and Ligeti. These performances were recorded between 1969 and 1997, and give the listener ample opportunity to discover the reason why Marlboro has been a mecca for performers and chamber-music enthusiasts alike.
