I first heard this album years ago, and Herbie's rendition of Eli, Eli, (Impressions of the middle east) shows the beauty and angst that only a flute can bring, He was in his prime when this recording was made, and it holds up well today

5 out of 5 stars A Surprising Find.......2007-03-12

The composers of these songs were almost all born in the second half of the 19th century. Their attempt was to create an "American music" from native American sources of rhythm and tonality. I get the same sense of hearing original music with these songs as I got the first time I heard Erik Satie. The songs tend to be melodic and peaceful and fresh. Don't expect much in the way of tom-toms and movie indian harmonies. I love to find songs that go to unexpected places. I found that here.

For a much more sophisticated review, search "American Indianists" and Fred Flaxman.

The style of this music ranges from the easy late Romanticism of Widor and Caplet to the relatively challenging modern idiom of Jolivet. I like Jolivet best. His five incantations for unaccompanied flute are mesmerizing, and his Chant de Linos shows how to be lyrical within a mid-20th-century idiom. By comparison, the music by Taffanel, Bozza, and the others is lightweight entertainment, although mostly charming. Robert Aitken also plays Debussy's Syrinx, three minutes of unaccompanied flute magic, and for once he plays it slowly enough for the languorous atmosphere to come across. Actually, he plays everything well, and in the accompanied works Robin McCabe provides strong collaboration. --Leslie Gerber

      Album Description

For years, the Linos Harp Quintet has ranked among the most distinguished ensembles in the field of chamber music. In their Hänssler Classic debut, they have chosen a program of beautiful French music from the Romantic and Modern repertoires. Certain to appeal to harp aficionados, chamber music collectors, and fans of French chamber music, these works display the uniquely Gallic charm of music featuring the harp along with other suitable instruments.

This outstanding release covers well-known Faure (Berceuse,Sicilienne),
      the delightful Ropartz, and rarities by Jolivet, Cras, and Tournier;
and all carried off with consummate grace. The harp quintet is rather
a uniquely French instrumental configuration and the subtlety of the French sound palette could not be better served than in this rapturous
      recording.

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to love the flute for this, but if you do..........2007-04-26

I'll start out by admitting that the CD I bought was significantly cheaper. On sale. Fine. Maybe I'm being judgemental then by saying this, but this is absolutely worth it.

In general, flutes have the capability to be the most beautiful instrument in existence. You can love the piano, adore the violin, think the cello gorgeous, but ultimately - the flute has the most emotion, the greatest feeling, and can be the loveliest instrument of them all. And think about it - we love string quartets. So what about a flute quartet?

And, indeed, the result is simply gorgeous. The music is light and beautiful, but still has enough to it that it's pleasant to listen to. It's always beautiful. While some pieces are just a bit simple and more fluttery than anything else, some pieces have more substance and feeling. Even some smaller pieces, more in the "fluttery" direction, have the power to make you stop and just go, "Aw". It's sweet and lovely. Others aren't quite as "cheerful". The "Pompeux" is slow, solemn, and very beautiful.

Oh, and back to the price... It's worth it. This is for any flute lover. This is for any quartet lover. This is for any impressionism lover. This is for anyone who can appreciate beauty. This is for you.

      Highly recommended.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing presentation of great music.......2002-08-04

I recently received this as a present but I was already familiar with many of these recordings, having owned the complete versions of the works presented. Yes, these are great recordings but if you settle for this compilation you will be missing out big time on great music. I own Fennell's recording on the Holst suite--while the March from the suite is very good, you will miss out on the beautiful 'Song Without Words' and the 'Fantasia on the Dargason,' which are the seond and fourth movements of the suite, respectively. If you get the original CD from which this movement was taken you will be able to enjoy the wonderful playing of members of the Cleveland Orchsestra as they play Holst's First suite and a wonderful rendition of Handel's Fireworks Music.

Maazel's Pictures at an Exhibition is excellnt, precise with excellent blends and fantastic orchestral playing, but you can hardly feel the power of the Great Gate of Kiev without the promenades and pictures that preceed it--you loose the whole sense of climax and fulfillment following the half hour of difficult music that preceeds the Great Gate. Beethoven's Emperor concerto is top-notch music but I think you might rather hear the second movement between the first and third movements which are full of powerful orchestral playing and keyboard virtuosity. Robert Spano's recording of Scheherazade that was released just a few months ago is brilliant. It's his first recording with the Atlanta Symphony and it's great--and you should own the complete thing which comes on a CD with the beuatiful Russian Easter Overture.

Spend some time looking for these complete recordings and you will be rewarded. What makes the compilation even worse is that in many cases the CD does not even present a full movement but just a part of a movement.

As I said, I own many of these individual recordings and they are all great: Telarc captures the best musicians at their best. Having two or three CDs from which these excerpts were taken is much better than owning this compilation. I highly recommend Fennell's Holst (Telarc - #80038), Maazel's Pictures (Telarc - #80042), and Spano's Scheherazade (Telarc - #80568), instead of this disc. Rachmaninoff's Second Sonata and Sibelius' Second Symphony are great but these are not my preferred recordings (find Van Cliburn's Rachmaninoff and Maazel's Sibelius), and you can do better by swapping some other performers as well.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential Griffes recording........2004-04-22

This is arguably the most important recording of Charles Griffes's music yet made, for the breadth of selections it offers, and the commitment of the artists to the project. "The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan," probably his most-recorded work, is splendidly played by the Boston Symphony under their music-director, Seiji Ozawa. The same forces support Phyllis Bryn-Julson in the unjustly neglected "Three Poems of Fiona MacLeod." As another reviewer has noted, this is the jewel of the disc. These are lovely, mysterious songs, in a tonal language somewhere between Debussy and Scriabin, but Bryn-Julson's gift of absolute pitch, her obvious affection for the pieces and her sensitivity to the lyrics, coupled with Ozawa's sympathetic accompaniment, make it unlikely there will ever be a finer recording. For the rest, Sherrill Milnes is captured at something near his prime in four early songs to German texts as well as the swaggering "Song of the Dagger;" Olivia Stapp delivers worthy performances of "Four Impressions," on French texts; and the CD concludes with intimate transcriptions of the piano-original "Three Tone Pictures," beautifully played by the New World Chamber Ensemble. The program notes have an excellent biography of Griffes. For anyone wanting a single-disc introduction to this important American composer, there's simply no better choice.

4 out of 5 stars Griffes: Voluptuous Vocal Music.......2000-07-25

This CD is a treasure - - the recording of the *Three Poems of Fiona MacLeod* is a desert-island piece if ever there was one. Phyllis Bryn-Julson sings these songs with the desired mixture of vulnerability and voluptuousness, and Ozawa gets the perfect transparent sound from the orchestra. The other pieces on the CD are not as thrilling (to me), but are good examples of Griffes's impressionist-inspired music.
