This is by far the best CD in the Baby Einstein collection--it will put your toddler in hyperactive playful mode and exhaust you as you try to keep up. But for today's overweight, tv- and game- addicted children, this is great!

A Lot of Fun for Playtime.......2006-01-04

This CD is a lot of fun. The music is bubbly and upbeat and makes you want to get up and dance or just jump around. It's a great way to spend some play time with your kids. And the classical music exposure is a bonus.

Synthesized dreck.......2005-08-13

Why did the producers use synthesizers for this music? It's awful. It's possible to hook kids on classical music using the actual instruments written for it - that's how I got hooked. That's what Mel Blanc and Disney did in their cartoons, Bugs Bunny and Fantasia. I do NOT recommend this CD to anyone. It was a shower gift. If you are not familiar with classical music, then I recommend "Baby Needs Beethoven", which is a collection of music using real instruments (albeit shortened - no full length symphonies here).

DSD Makes them sound better!.......2006-04-05

This SACD of the Bizet and Grieg Suites started out life as a

Telarc L.P. DG 10048 then is was released on CD, now it has been

remasterd and issued as a Hybrid SACD that plays in stereo.

These perfomances were recorded using the Soundstream System

which were done at 50kHz. CD's were done at 44.1 which meant

that some of the great sound of the recordings were lost when

being transfered to CD. Fortunatly the SACD uses something

called Direct Stream Digital or DSD. This allows the origianl

50kHz sound to be heard on a disc as it was meant to be heard.

As for the performances Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis

Symphony deliver some sonic knockouts! At just over 79:00

minutes you get alot for your money. Great sound! Room filling

speaker demonstraiting, lease busting performances! The Rimsky-

Korsakov " Russian Easter Overture" is worth the price of the

disc alone!

Antar rules........2007-01-03

Overall, this is a beautiful recording. Each of the works recorded here is played very well and the interpretations are persuasive and even moving.

The Overture to The Tsar's Bride is the opening of a very tragic tale. This overture only implies the troubles to come, but it's a justly famous concert piece having great energy and panache. True to Rimsky's roots and his nationalist intentions, the music is modal, utilizing the orchestral forces to great effect, particularly the high woodwinds. The winds of the Philharmonia Orchestra are more than up to the task.

The next two pieces, the Fantasia on Serbian Themes and the Symphony no. 1 are early works and don't yet display Rimsky's orchestral mastery, his complete absorption of the Russian symphonic and folk styles, nor the balance of Russian style with the Germanic style of the central European masters (such as Dvorak, Brahms, and Bruch) that was such a part of Tchaikovsky's struggle and ultimate success. The Fantasia is lightweight, although it is certainly charming music and deserves to be played more often. The Symphony no. 1 shows Rimsky paying homage to Schumann and Mendelssohn (Schumann's Symphony no. 4 is an obvious model here), but there are flashes of originality, particularly in the last movement.

The reason for buying this recording is 'Antar', the so-called (so-published) Symphony no. 2. This is one of the best recordings of this piece I have ever heard. The interpretation is straightforward, yet the sounds that Yondani Butt is able to coax from his Philharmonia players are wonderfully evocative of the dream sequence that the music describes. The 'idee fixe' or main motif that is found in all 4 movements is played with every nuance, whether powerfully for the brass in the 2nd movement (depicting a great battle), softly expressive for the string section in the 1st movement, or more erotically in the romantically-charged 4th movement. This particular interpretation is not so concerned with the separate orchestral sections; in fact, this recording seems to consider the orchestra as a singe entity whose every sound comes from a single voice. This is done by blending transitions and a close matching of timbres from section to section. Thus, the trumpet section doesn't blaze through the rest of the sound but rather adds to it with warm, glowing high notes. A good example of this is the 3rd movement, depicting Antar's triumph and renown. Often, works such as these are used on orchestral programs and recordings to feature the skills of star players, but here is a different and quite successful approach.

So, why only 4 stars? The 1st movement of Antar has a few intonation problems in the violin sections during the first climax -- I'm surprised this wasn't caught. The sound, although warm and beautiful, is at times a bit too fuzzy and needs more reverb and brilliance, especially in the climaxes of the 1st and 3rd movements of Antar and the 4th movement of the Symphony no. 1. Also, to my ears, the Overture and Antar are the only pieces worth listening to consistently. The Symphony no. 1 and the Fantasia are good pieces, but that's alot of recording time devoted to music that's not quite first-rate. The cover art is juvenile.

Glazunov's two piano concertos are given a stunning reading in this recording. Ms. Yablonskaya's playing is executed with what is obviously a deep love for Glazunov's music and a profound understanding of what it means to be Russian. There is a longing, a reserved melancholia, an impassioned spirit that Yablonskaya is able to elicit from the score that goes as much to her greatness as pianist as it does to Glazunov's wonderful musical abilities. This is an important recording.

Mellow Pianistic Slavicism.......2000-10-28

This is the most peculiar disc so far in the Naxos survey of the orchestral music of Alexander Glazunov (1865-1936); but it is by no means without interest. It contains the two concerted works that the composer wrote for piano and orchestra as well as a curiosity (for orchestra alone) in which he had a hand. Let's start with the curiosity, the "Variations on a Russian Theme" (1901), in which no less than six composers took part, each contributing his own variation on the titular theme. Only two other names apart from Glazunov's mean anything to Western listeners: Rimsky-Korsakov's and Lyadov's (although I vaguely recall having heard of Jâzeps Vîtols). The theme is pleasant - so Russian indeed as to verge on parody - and the variations all manage to be lyrically genial and brilliantly orchestrated. (I especially dig the echo-effects in Vîtols' variation, the second one after the presentation of the theme.) Glazunov's variation forms the Finale. In his concertos, oddly, Glazunov never achieved the spontaneity that he did in his ballets or symphonies. I might exempt from this judgment only the Concerto-Ballata for Cello and Orchestra and the very late Concerto for Saxophone and Strings. The two piano concertos illustrate the point. The Concerto No. 1 in F Minor (1910) has two movements, the last considerably longer than the first (13.25 as against 20.57). The First Movement, a sonata, unfolds in moderate tempi. The long Second Movement consists of eight variations, most of them fairly leisurely, on a theme that could be stronger (hence more memorable) in its outline. In a concert hall, people would start to shift in their seats. The advantage of having the work on CD is that you can halt the play-through where you want, run your errands, and take up listening again when you've come home with the groceries. The Concerto No. 2 in E Major (1917) conforms more to 19th century conventions, the model being the Lisztian type of one-movement solo-with-orchestra work. Oxana Yablonskaya plays the keyboard parts as though they were as serious as Rachmaninov. That's the spirit! Dmitry Yablonsky (Oxana's son) leads the Moscow Symphony with the same Moxy. Don't mind my reservations. It'll grow on you.
