Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops take a break from their usual contemporary program; to perform this eclectic selection of transcriptions by the flamboyant Leopold Stokowski. The novice wouldn't have known that Stokowski got his start in 1909 with the Cincinnati Symphony. I guess they are paying homage to him with this album. Where other discs usually concentrate on just Bach or baroque items; this disc offers orchestrations from Boccherini to Rachmaninoff. The digital recording is fine and detailed complementing the instrumentation. Though purists find Stokowski's meddling offensive, his transcriptions can make classical music more approachable to new ears. Kunzel kind of gives us his version of Stokowki's greatest hits, showing serious affection for the music. You get "Toccata and Fugue"
to start it off, and a very different "Great Gate of Kiev", less congested in orchestration than the Ravel, to end it. Most of the pieces have bombastic finales, which include heavy brass and percussion and even carillons ring out. A very likable program that won't fade with repeated listening. Add a star if your not aware that Stokowki's own recordings of these pieces are still available.

Arranged by the greatest, conducted by one of the greatest, and performed by the best you could not ask for anything more. These performances will inspire forever. Five stars do not do this music compilation justice!

I don't have this disc yet, nor have I heard all the tracks. All I have heard is the Toccata and Fugue in D minor in mp3 format, and let me tell you, even if everything else on that disc is drivel, that track alone is worth the cost of the CD and worthy of my 5 star rating. Simply an amazing interpretation of the work, great fidelity, just great! I can't wait to scrape the cash together and hear the rest of of this disc!

This recording is a ADD Mono remastered recording of music recorded from 1947 to 1950. I suppose there is merit in listing to the Stokowski Symphony Orchestra conducted by Stokowski himself. However, I was looking for an excellent HiFi listening CD using current technology and not remastering of old, mono recorded music. Chandos 9259 is a much better recording of some of the same Bach music (certainly not a 1:1 match). Probably the best ever recording of Bach transcriptions is the Chandos recording of Leonard Slatkin's transcriptions.

Stokowski, a lifelong Bach fan, did fantastic work on this CD. The symphony has the lush sound we have come to expect and the music is both symphonic and yet intimate. Excellent price and on 24 bit technology. A must for bach and Sokowski fans.

      Even though this disc offers a good introduction to Stokowski's early firey Bach transcriptions for a cheap price, it is a terrible re-mastered sound...sorry to say.

      If you're serious about getting Stokowski's famous early Bach transciptions, you must get the Pearl edition which offers the complete mono recordings on 2 cd's, in excellent remastered sound! It's desert island material!

      Although Leopold Stokowski was one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century he began his career as an organist, and he especially loved the music of Bach. After he established himself as a conductor, Stokowski transcribed several of his favorite works by Bach for orchestra. Stokowski's transcriptions were well received by the public and thereby exposed Bach's works to a wider audience; but, initially many critics and musical purists felt that Stokowski's transcriptions had sullied Bach's music. Fortunately, the Bach/Stokowski transcriptions are now generally recognized as masterpieces and performed by other conductors. But no one conducts them with quite the genius and love as Stokowski himself did. This CD presents several of the greatest Bach/ Stokowski transcriptions conducted by Stokowski himself -- and at a bargain price. If, like Stokowski, you too love the music of Bach, please get this CD while it's still available.
