Album Description
DAWN American Treasures by Cornish Colony Composers features music from the Gilded Age composed by Arthur Farwell and Arthur Whiting, two of America's most popular composers from a century ago. This rare music, recorded here for the first time, is varied in style and approachable to all audiences. The performance of SilverWood pianist and harpist Mary Jane Rupert is exceptional. She is joined by Mary Battey, violinist and Fern Meyers, violoncellist in a powerful and unforgetable performance of Farwell's "The Gods of the Mountain." This recording, as well as SilverWood's album "At Fox Meadow," belongs in every serious collector's library as few recordings are currently available of works by these composers from this important period in American music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Historical American music comes alive........2002-06-27

The Silverwood artists make the meaning of Farwell's and Whiting's compositions spring to life. I enjoy the selections more each time I listen to the CD and feel good about this important American music being resurrected.

5 out of 5 stars Good listening.......2002-04-12

Dr. Evelyn Culbertson, an authority on the composer Arthur Farell, has reviewed "Dawn" and makes the following comments:"The quality of the sound is especially fine throughout. The piano solo is well played and is faithful to the original text. The "Gods of the Mountain" is so impressive. Ensemble is perfectly balanced and Farwell's music shines... Total effect is very dramatic. In the 4th movement.. the harp is great in those plucked chords and I like the unusual 'cello bowing..(it) portray(s) the ominous steps of the real gods coming. I am amazed that 3 instruments could create the same "results" as the orchestra version. The rest of the music by Whiting is also good listening... Whiting knows how to spin out some good melodies which he uses effectively in Intermezzo and Melodie et Arabesque. I liked the way he used octaves in the Finale to make a well-rounded conclusion to the Suite. The pianist is superb! The Roses and Lilies is very effective for harp..appropriate for the poem. The CD should sell well."
