Very Effective Soundtrack!.......2005-08-27
This is appears to be a film which was definitely strengthened by the music chosen for it. All of the visual elements of the film are truly enhanced by the soundtrack. They blend and fit together extremely well.
I especially enjoyed the inclusion of the song "Ist Berlin" by Liane. It seems to express a sentiment similar to the Sinatra tune "New York, New York", but with a distinctively German flavor.
John Ottman truly is the King!.......2000-12-14
This soundtrack is beautiful! I have admired him for the music from "H2O" and "The usual suspects" but this album is a true masterpiece. He mixes Jewish/Gypsy violin with the Nazi like drums that sends chills down your spine in the Main title. What can I say? The album is powerful and it sweeps you off your feet completely. Yet the soft parts are so wonderful, they could get a stone to cry. If you like Ottman's previous work, you will love this. Buy this cd and you will not be disappointed!!
The Devil's lounge music.......1999-10-13
Man this soundtrack has so much weight to it and it is so evil. The themes are incredible, and I loved the way they are repeated, modified, collide, throughout the entire score. I also like some of the more subtle pieces that fade into the background on the first listen, but are really incredible when you concentrate on them. The usage of piano keys is always incredible with Ottman again, and he is really milking that pattern for all it is worth.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent introduction to both the life and the work.......2001-08-10
Not having known very much at all about Chopin, I cannot vouch for the accuracy in the Naxos entry in their CD and cassette Biography series; but I can vouch for the enjoyment
(NA 421912) afforded me.
Written and produced by Jeremy Siepmann, this audio-bio not only tells the strange story of Chopin's life but also includes generous examples of his music, drawn from the bottomless pit of Naxos musical CDs. An excellent idea was to use actors for the voices of Chopin (Anton Lesser), George Sand and other females in his life (Elaine Claxton and Karen Archer), and other male acquaintances (Neville Jason). It is the kind of reading that would fascinate even if the work were fictional.
His letters are particularly fascinating, especially as they are read dramatically by the small cast; and one would rather hear about all his faults--physical and psychological--from people who knew him well. Perhaps his strange epistolary relationship with his Titus is dwelt upon a bit too much, but such are the times (then and now).
My only criticism in a negative direction is the length of the musical examples. I do not really think the entire "Revolutionary Etude" had to be played or the entire "Funeral March"; a minute or two with a fadeout would have been fine, especially on repeated hearings where one wants the facts. Nevertheless, highly recommended.

This set is a fine introduction to Beethoven for a certain class of listeners. It is much too long, detailed, and serious for children. It is not for advanced musicologists, either. Author-narrator Jeremy Siepmann avoids musical analysis altogether, concentrating instead on biographical material about Beethoven and his friends and providing historical and social background. Siepmann's text is absorbing and is frequently illustrated with substantial music examples (usually complete movements) from the Naxos catalog. Unfortunately, the first such example (from the Seventh Symphony) sounds regrettably mushy, but otherwise, the performances are consistently rewarding. If Naxos has put together this set, with its very large booklet, partly to promote its catalog of Beethoven recordings, the company may well find listeners attracted by the examples offered. The complete reproduction of the spoken text seems like a waste of space and paper, but the remaining material in the booklet is intelligently written and useful. Even people generally familiar with Beethoven are sure to find something new and interesting here. --Leslie Gerber

Unassailable.......2006-03-22
In offering my praise of this duel CD it's hard to know where to begin. First I suppose I should mention the flawlessness of the playing. Fred Oldenburg (whoever that is) is superb. There is not a wrong note to be heard on either CD. I find the level of technical competency to be fascinating. This CD was a tremendous undertaking for one pianist. As an amateur pianist myself, I can say with great certainty that to play Czerny's "Art of Finger Dexterity" properly is no small task, even for professionals. And Liszt's Transcendental Etudes are universally considered some of the most fearsome pieces ever written for solo piano. Yet both are presented here flawlessly. So bravo to Fred Oldenburg.
Second, I shall briefly touch upon the recording quality. All that I really can say is that is it also excellent, and just serves to further compliment the playing. I could easily hear every note with distinct and brilliant clarity. The sonic effect was perfectly streamlined throughout.
Third, this set is very well put together. With Czerny and Liszt you have the champions of two distinct schools, even though Czerny taught Liszt. Those distinctions could not be clearer when listening to these CD's. Czerny's etudes are pedagogical and systematic (some would say cold and unfeeling). They are brilliant though whatever you believe. Czerny did not add needless ornamentation. That is not to say though that he was simplistic, since they are fiendishly difficult. He represents probably the epitome of the "old school" of etude composition. Czerny's great masterpiece is aptly called "The Art of Finger Dexterity" for a reason. If you complete all the studies within, your fingers will be most dexterous. And that is all Czerny seeks to accomplish. Many who listen to "The Art of Finger Dexterity" may be put off by the admittedly narrow focus of its aims, and as my father says, a somewhat "grating quality." But it is truly a historical piece. Czerny's etudes would serve as the musical backbone, in one way or another, for virtually every other solo piano piece written for the next 50 years. And to transition, it would be impossible to play Liszt's Transcendental Etudes (which were dedicated to Czerny) without first mastering "The Art Finger Dexterity."
The Transcendental Etudes are actually not a revolution as much as they an evolution, albeit a very great evolution. For Liszt did not, throw out the past conventions of his teacher, but rather built upon them. Liszt approaches the etude quite differently to Czerny, in fact he redefines them. The Czerny etude was principally a study piece. They were meant for moderately advanced students to learn so they could move on to greater pianistic challenges. Liszt's Etudes are far removed from that mold. (Certainly no piano student I know ever takes up the Transcendental Etudes as study pieces). They are meant to be played by only the foremost pianists in the world. They don't just have ornamentation, they glory in them. Liszt adds every little frill he can. They are etudes written outside the realm of pedagogy. And that is the critical difference.
Listening to the Czerny and then the Liszt respectively allows the listener to delight in the aforementioned progression. Both from an analytical and casual listening standpoint, this set has provided me with endless enjoyment. For only $12.00 it's unassailable in every way
Highly Recommended

Beautiful Music, but............2005-09-30
This is a beautiful CD with wonderful piano music. It is absolutely delightful. The cover notes are interesting and help in the enjoyment of the music. But... I bought this because of the title (which matches the title to a ballet with music composed by Czerny) and the ballet "Etudes" is not on this CD.

Album Description
CRI is proud to present its new series, CRI Archives, which will feature the coupling of digitally-remastered works from its historic archive with archival presentations of portions of the original packaging. The first release in the series, New Music for the Piano with pianist, Robert Helps, features 21 works which were originally released by RCA Red Seal label in 1966. The LP was subsequently re-released by CRI in 1971. Both LP releases were under the auspices of The Abby Whiteside Foundation which compiled the collection of new piano works. The new CD package features not only the mastery of Helps as performer but also new program notes commissioned from Alan Rich, the noted music critic of L.A. Weekly. This disc remains the only source for most of these recordings which represent a cross-section of the movements and leaders in American composing just past the mid-20th-century mark. Includes works by Dahl, Gideon, Babbitt, Powell, Gould, Hovhaness, and Perle, among many others.
