5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Disc!.......2007-06-20

This sacd is positively stunning. I am young. I was raised on gizmos, gadgets and hi-tech this and that...and for the life of me I can't understand how these engineers back in the 50's and 60's produced such astoundingly detailed recordings. With two or three mics for the hall and some tube equipment and wham...there you have it...a recording of impressively powerful pieces of music with enough separation and detail within the mix to keep the listener busy for hours and hours on end. That and the emotional wallop packed by this recording is second to none. Even if you have copies aplenty of Pictures, or Night on..., such as I do myself, please do not hesitate to pick up this recording as it is worth every dime. If you are looking for an interesting counterpoint to Reiner's reading of Pictures or Night pick of Jose Serebrier's recording on Naxos.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to exercise.......2007-06-13

Such great music. Exercise and listening
to this one is a great combination.
Time seems to fly by and before you know
it. Times up!

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-04-02

How can something older than me sound so good? The recording is top notch. Dont be fooled into thinking it is "just stereo", the ambience of symphony hall comes thru as though it were recorded in surround. Exquisite detail and perfect tempo. Timpani has realistic impact. And all the other music with Pictures makes this a real bargain!

5 out of 5 stars Strauss and Mussorgsky.......2007-03-24

They sound good, without the 'edge' often associated with CDs. CDs are a Fourier Transform of the analog source - that is to say a subset of it.

4 out of 5 stars Hybrid SACD Mussorgsky: Pirctures at an Exhibition, Night on Bald Mountain.......2007-01-14

Great value. Great performances. On my krell sacd player, I found small differences between the SACD layer and the regular. The recordings are outstanding. Consider the price and that this is a 2 lp set, this is a deal.

I am not a music critic nor do I "know" much about music but if you love lovely violin music you will love this.

The Kreisler pieces are played exceptionally well. The one disc alone is worth the price of the double disc collection. Great playing.

Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole is a riot of instrumental color and virtuoso challenges; exactly Jascha Heifetz's piece of cake, as are Saint-Saëns's Havanaise, Chausson's Poème and Sarasate's Zigeunerweise (Gypsy Tunes). The sound is pre-stereo but well detailed. One movement of the Lalo is left out, but there are plenty of fireworks in the four that remain. --Joe McLellan

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars very poor recording.......2007-05-25

Besides having to turn up the volume to the max just so I could hear the music. The background is full hiss and stratches

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!.......2007-01-03

Anything Heifetz ever recorded is sublime and this CD is no exception.

5 out of 5 stars One of The Best Violin CDs.......2005-11-06

If you could own only two classical violin CDs, this should be one of them! (The other is the Heifetz recording of the Tchaikovsky & Brahms violin concertos.)

Skip right past the first piece (Lalo), and you will enjoy violin music like liquid silver, with unbelievable passion, fireworks and virtuosity. This is Heifetz at his very best!

The Symphonie Espagnole performance is pedestrian. Neither Heifetz nor the orchestra quite catch the mood of the music. Buy the CD anyway! The rest of the music sets the standard for fine violin playing!

5 out of 5 stars Where is the intermezzo? .......2005-11-04

Ok, great play by Heifetz but why is the "intermezzo" in Symph.Espagnole missing??

5 out of 5 stars Heifetz is IT!.......2004-05-31

When it comes to Tchaikowsky, Mendelssohn, Lalo, Kreisler, and ANY kind of show piece, no one can touch Heifetz. Non of the violinists alive today can ever come close to his level of musical personality, command of his instrument and sound. He is the father of all violin virtuoso, together with Paganini himself, perhaps. My only negative comment is regarding the restoration sound of the CD, it is alright, but could be better.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars a feast of violin virtuosity.......2006-03-02

What a tone! David Oistrakh was a virtuoso, of that there is no doubt. What makes his playing stand apart, though, is his rich, full, round tone. Oistrakh does not draw attention to his technical skill, he draws attention to the music.

These duets, with Vladimir Yampolsky on piano, were recorded at Abbey Road in London in early 1956, and first released by EMI in 1957. It's a fine set of "showpieces," beginning with Tartini's sonata in G minor, "The Devil's Trill." Slow lyrical numbers like Debussy's "Clair de lune" and Ysaye's "Extase" are interspersed with livelier numbers such as de Falla's "Siete canciones populares espanolas" and Koday's "Three Hungarian Folk-dances."

This is an easy recommendation for anyone who loves great violin music, another truly "Great Recording of the Century" from the EMI vaults.

5 out of 5 stars Talmi and Ehnes: Magnificent Duo Perform Saint-Saens.......2006-09-27

Originally heard Saint-Saens' "Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28," with Yoav Talmi conducting the Quebec Symphony Orchestra and James Ehnes as the featured artist for violin on our local classical music FM radio station while driving home from work. This trip, normally punctuated with good classical music, rarely makes me pull over to the side of the road to concentrate on one of the station's selections. However, in this case the music did just that! Ehnes and his violin perform the "Rondo" -- a repertoire workhorse for violinists -- with crystalline clarity and at the same time with richness and depth. His technique is precise and careful; each note stands alone and in conjunction with every other note, no cheating or sliding over the hard parts, no slurring of the passages --you have to hear his play to fully understand what this means. The truly car-stopping moment came about during the "Introduction" when his exquisite sensitivity to the plaintive and haunting feel of the first section of this piece occurred. I was stunned. In a nutshell, I highly recommend the entire CD, which contains the same brilliant collaboration between Talmi, Ehnes, and the Quebec Symphony Orchestra on other French pieces, but buy it if for no other reason than to hear Ehnes's "Rondo Capriccioso."

The violin showpieces of Wieniawski still turn up sometimes as encores, but there are few discs devoted entirely to them. They're fun. Wieniawski (1835-1880) must have been a brilliant violinist to write so well for the instrument, and he came up with some very catchy tunes and never pushed them too far. Marat Bisengaliev, who comes from Kazakhstan, is a very elegant violinist with a seamless technique. He plays these pieces for their musical value instead of showing off his zippy fingers. Since some of these works were meant for showing off, though, this lovely disc isn't the ultimate Wieniawski collection, but it will do until that is recorded. --Leslie Gerber

Wieniawski was such a formidable violinist that his show off pieces are practicaly impossible to play. I would like to let know to Leslie Gerber that Wieniawski was, by unanimous consent, the best violinist of his time, just like Paganini.
