4 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to '70's punk........2007-06-08

This boxed set has many great and classic punk songs. I would recommend it particularly to young people today who didn't live in the late '70's. Back in '78 or so, some of this type of music is what really got me interested in rock'n'roll to begin with. I think it's a great collection, but Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, and some others who were really not true punk rock, don't really belong on this set. However, it's good to see many of the New York (CBGB) bands here. This is the true rebellious music of the 1970's, just like rockabilly was in the 1950's, even though the genres and styles are completely different.

5 out of 5 stars "Yes Thanks" to No Thanks.......2007-02-09

This was a gift for a really good friend for her birthday and I just gave it to her the other day. She called me the next day and said she hadn't stopped playing the CD box set on her stereo and in her car because it brought her back to being 13 again when punk was in its infancy. She loved it.

So I guess anyone who enjoyed this era of punk will enjoy this CD box set immensely.

4 out of 5 stars The soundtrack to my college years.......2006-10-21

This set takes me right back to smoky clubs and spiky-haired boys with black nails and eyeliner. Good times. Good music.

I have to agree with previous reviewers, though - this is not an overview of the punk movement by any stretch of the imagination. Luckily for me, that's not why I bought it. If you're looking for a representative collection of early punk, keep walking. But if you're looking to reconnect with your mis-spent youth, this is the place.

2 out of 5 stars The Real Epitaph.......2006-05-15

It somehow just makes sense that thirty years later you'd see a cd version of the same type of lame "new wave" cash-in albums that cropped up like mushrooms in '77-'78. The predictable and the loss leaders are all here, in a way that really makes me oddly nostalgic

5 out of 5 stars Superb tribute to Kerouac.......2006-09-07

Kerouac enthusiasts are well-served with recordings of their master's work read by others. I can think of several such albums already available, mainly of his well known books: On The Road, The Dharma Bums, Visions of Cody, Big Sur, and Mexico City Blues. There are also Jack's own recordings, released on a 3-CD Rhino Records set, in which he tends to explore more unfamiliar territory, such as his Pomes All Sizes, Old Angel Midnight, and Book of Blues, with just the occasional excursion into the more familiar realms of The Subterraneans, Desolation Angels, Lonesome Traveler, and Visions of Cody.

Such is the case with this tribute CD from Rykodisc where the producer (and nephew of Jack's last wife) Jim Sampas, has deliberately chosen more unfamiliar texts for the galaxy of star talents on this release to read. The reasoning behind this decision was apparently to show Kerouac in a different light, and to demonstrate the wide range of his different styles. In this objective Sampas has succeeded admirably.

Accordingly, there are readings of the more obscure items from Pomes All Sizes and Book of Blues as well as four texts which have never before been published: Brooklyn Bridge Blues, America's New Trinity of Love: Dean, Brando, Presley, and two dreams: "On a Sunny Afternoon...", and "Us Kids Swim Off a Great Pier". The excellent 32-page booklet includes the full text of all the readings, and so represents the first publication of these items. It also has some photos of Jack, and paintings by him which have not been widely seen.

So, who is reading the texts? A host of talent from the worlds of music, film and literature. The late Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs are present, as are Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Hunter S Thompson and Jim Carroll. The musician readers include R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Patti Smith, John Cale, Warren Zevon, the Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, Eric Anderson and Julia Hatfield. Other musicians, such as Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, ex-10,000 Maniacs guitarist Rob Buck, and Jeff Buckley provide backings for the readers. From the land of film and stage come Johnny Depp and Matt Dillon, as well as comedian Richard Lewis. There's even a previously unheard recording of Kerouac himself, reading from his MacDougal Street Blues, with over-dubbed bass, synth and guitar by Joe Strummer. Jack can also be heard in the background of Robert Hunter's reading from Visions of Cody, skatting "A Foggy Day in London Town" from a rare tape recorded at the Cassady's home in 1952.

What of the readings? Well, they cover a wide range of interpretations, from the stark Lydia Lunch on Bowery Blues and the wild Maggie Estep on Skid Row Wine to the child-like rendition by Julia Hatfield of Silly Goofball Pomes, and the improvisation of Patti Smith on The Last Hotel, the poem of Jack's which always reminds me of Arthur Rimbaud. The readers I most enjoyed were those who sounded like Jack and who phrased like Jack, since I truly believe that no one can read Kerouac as well as Kerouac did. Accordingly, my favorite reader has to be Lee Ranaldo, who delivers a magnificent reading of a letter to John Clellon Holmes in which Jack is telling of his encounter with the beautiful "Good Blonde" who gave him a lift up the west coast in 1955. I could listen to that voice reading Kerouac all day long. All night too. Runners up in this category would have to be Robert Hunter (Visions of Cody), Warren Zevon (Running Through - Chinese Poem Song), and Matt Dillon (Mexican Loneliness).

Allen Ginsberg does a fine reading of the previously unseen Brooklyn Bridge Blues, recorded at the Town Hall, NYC, in 1995. Only 8½ of the total of 10 choruses were read by Allen because, on the day, the last page had somehow become lost. To rectify this shortcoming, Eric Anderson can be heard performing the missing 1½ choruses on a separate track, from the top of the Brooklyn Bridge, no less, with the sounds of the traffic passing by.

As well as the Kerouac readings, two of the tracks feature new material. The band Morphine perform "Kerouac", their own tribute to the man, and Hunter S Thompson, after reading a short extract from one of Jack's letters to William Burroughs, adds his own "Ode to Jack" in homage to his hero.

The musical accompaniments cover a wide spectrum of styles. No jazz, which Jack preferred, and which backed some of his own recordings, but rock sounds of varying intensities and complexities. I still reckon that Jack would have approved.

The CD as a whole presents a vast variety of content, reading styles and musical accompaniments, all fitted together in a pleasing sequence that would be hard to beat. The playing time is extremely generous at 79½ minutes, and the complete package is indeed a fine tribute to Jack Kerouac. Producer Jim Sampas is to be congratulated in putting it all together. Let's hope that this is but the first of many such projects.

4 out of 5 stars A Tribute in Words, Music & Voices.......2005-04-12

Now and then a CD gets better the more you listen. Such is the case with Kicks Joy Darkness, a tribute to Jack Kerouac. It was released in 1997, but I recently rediscovered it and put it in my car so I could listen again. I'm glad I did.

The CD is a tribute in words, music and voices to one of the greatest writers of our time. Here, his work is interpreted by a diverse range of talents, including actor Matt Dillon, Morphine, Michael Stipe, the awesome band Come, and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, as well as Jack's contemporaries Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Allen Ginsberg.

The best two tracks are "Dream: "Us Kids Swim off a Gray Pier" by Tyler, who does a phenomenal job of evoking Jack's images of summer through spoken word, and "MacDougal Street Blues," which is Jack's own voice backed by the late great Joe Strummer on electronic beat and keyboards. It's nothing short of sublime.

I like Jack's work because he seems to be a reluctant hero, which is what he was. Once his "On the Road" was reviewed by the New York Times in 1957, he was touted as The Next Big Thing and the spokesperson of a generation (the Beat generation for sure). And sort of like Kurt Cobain in the Nineties, who was also given the role of spokesperson of a generation against his will, Jack resisted. He never wanted to be anything but a writer, so fame ate him up and overshadowed the very thing that had catapulted him to the forefront in the first place - his talent.

My only complaint about this CD is that none of Jack's novels (his best work) are represented here, which is why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5. I recommend picking up this CD as it's definitely worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars No, no suicide, wine please, wine..........2000-11-14

A well chosen and diverse mix of musicians, poets and writers contribute intimate interpretations of Kerouac's poetry. Haunting, graceful, raw and humorous, a brilliant album highly recommended. Special hilights-Hunter S Thompson's gonzo "Ode to Jack," Morphine's smoky "Kerouac," and Maggie Estep & the Spitters aggressive "Skid Row Wine." Jack himself is heard to a house beat by Joe Strummer on "Macdougal St Blues." One of a kind.

4 out of 5 stars "From these Blues we'll go to H Y M N S".......2000-02-27

For those of you who know Kerouac, you know that my screen name comes from "The Brooklyn Bridge Blues" - a track on this wonderful CD. For those of you who aren't that familiar with his work, I would highly recommend this collection.

Lydia Lunch's version of "Bowery Blues" is reason enough to get it - sultry, dangerous and mad with introspective passion. John Cale does a really nice rendition of "The Moon", one of Jack's more beautiful poems.

There are other gems here, as well. Juliana Hatfield's take on "Silly Goofball Pomes" has that perfect, childlike sound. "Mexican Loneliness" and Jack's "Dream" highlight his descriptive brilliance.

Very nicely done..

4 out of 5 stars Hopeful and refreshing.......1999-08-11

This CD would serve as a great introduction to Kerouac's work. The balance between spoken word and musical performance is near perfect and serves to show the timelessness of effective poetry.

4 out of 5 stars Winterlong!.......2007-01-16

The Pixies cover of "Winterlong" is the highlight of this compilation. It not only surpasses Neil Young's original, but it is the best thing the Pixies ever recorded in their entire career. If you are a Pixies fan or interested in hearing one of the best covers ever recorded, I'd highly recommend picking up a copy of The Bridge. The rest of the CD is hit-or-miss, but "Winterlong" makes it all worth it.

2 out of 5 stars not good.......2006-06-12

I bought this because I like both the cover bands and Neil Young, but it isn't very good. I wouldn't pay more than $5 if you see it in a 'used' bin.

this album was created by caroline records & N.Young to have some current/alt (very alternative at the time PTV does a tune ...)do some covers for a school.. THe Bridge school was no-funded alt. school for kids in jeopardy but were gifted(i.e.autistic but could do 10 digit math probs no sweat. Anyways its all here pixies at their hieght soul asylum before "runaway train" crushed the life out of them. Bongwater ,sonic youth,so many and the cd has like seven bonus trax not on the lp or tape if your truly old skool were really there this ones for YOU!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars It is what it is........2004-08-09

Obviously this is going to appeal mostly to fans of "Neil Young", but the bands on here are pretty great as well. First of all, any album with "Sonic Youth", "The Pixies", AND "Dinosaur Jr." must be good, and all their covers are good. I also like the covers from "Soul Asylum", "Flaming Lips", and "Psychic TV". The only thing about this disc though, like all tributes, is that it just makes you want to listen to the real thing, which of course "Neil" is. Also check out Willie Nelsons tribute album "Twisted Willie", which has the same caliber of bands.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album for the Clued in.......2004-03-02

This cd reads like a who's who of Alt rock before the major labels crushed the life of it. I mean it came out in 1989 and features the Pixies and The Flaming Lips among a wide aray of other great bands, it is almost a prediction of the future.
And btw, Neal Young was the bridge between old rock and new rock. Hence the title.

4 out of 5 stars Passion for the who.......2006-05-02

Interesting record. These very different artists having in common their passion for the who.
In my oppinion, the versions I like most are Bowie?s, Weller?s and Sterophonics, but all of them have something good.
If you like the who, can be nice listening to other groups singing their songs, although I hate comparisons.

3 out of 5 stars A tribute?.......2005-10-28

This CD isn't bad, but it could've been a lot better. Some of the songs were recorded live, while others are studio. It is obvious that the selections were not recorded specially for a tribute CD. But that's not the biggest problem with this collection. The biggest problem is that while this CD is supposed to be a tribute to the Who, one of the songs features the Who! It's like they're paying tribute to themselves?! This CD does contain some good Who interpretations, but it's not enough to save this compilation.

2 out of 5 stars Ho-hum.......2002-07-28

I have yet to hear a "tribute" album that is worth the time it takes to listen, but I still get drawn into buying them.

Here's the problem with "tribute" records: if the artists go the note-for-note reproduction route, what's the point? Who cares if Phish can reproduce "5:15"? (They don't quite, by the way. They play the same notes, but all of the passion of the original is sucked out of the performance, and the vocals sound like they were done after running a marathon) If you want to hear the original, you listen to the original...right?

If the artists go for reinterpretation, who cares? How many people listen to the Who's version of "Pictures Of Lily" and wishes it had been slower and sung in a smug monotone, ala David Bowie's version here? Classic songs done differently--with some very rare exceptions, like Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower" and Joe Cocker's "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window"--don't work.

Perhaps most dissapointing of all is the generally lazy vocals on this CD. Eddie Veder always sounds like he's asleep on his feet, but Sheryl Crow, David Bowie, and the singers for Phish and Fastball all sound like they phoned it in too.

Paul Weller comes off best here, but that may just be because he has spent his entire career imitating the Who.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2001-11-28

This disc is kind of a slapped-together cd - a low-rent version of your typical tribute album. Pearl Jam, Phish, and Kelly Jones' tracks are all recorded live, and not for the purpose of this cd - they just happened to be recorded well enough to be included. This cd lacks a cohesive listen, and most of the tracks are pretty uninspired or are note-for-note imitations of the original - just with a different singer...
I bought this to hear other artists take Who material and make it their own, and what this mostly sounds like is a 'karaoke with the stars' cd.
David Bowie's track is the most inspired, but..c'mon, he did this same sorta thing with the same-era Who music on his Pinups album in the early 70s.

3 out of 5 stars Pictures of Ziggy.......2001-08-03

Great songs, and overall good performances, but most of these versions are close to note-for-note versions of the originals. The Bowie version of "Pictures of Lily" is the one real departure, and it works on several levels. The tempo, production, and instrumentation are reminiscent of Ziggy-era Bowie (especially "All the Young Dudes" or "Ziggy Stardust"). In this context, the lyrics take on extra meaning--you can imagine the young boy "relieved" by the pictures of Lily Langtry on the wall inspired to grow up to be a cross-dressing glam rocker. A great version, and one truer to the spirit of a good cover--respecting the original, but making it your own.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars Devil's Music Deconstructed.......2005-08-19

To paraphrase Frank Zappa, the blues isn't dead, it just smells funny.
Since the big blues boom of the sixties, when every beat group had a few twelve-bar blues in their repertoire, the genre has been slowly and sadly sidelined, firstly by disco and dance culture, then by punk and everything else, until a point was reached when an admission for a fondness for the form was a short-cut to social pariah-hood. By way of self-preservation a sanitized form of the blues entered the mainstream, but politeness never suited it and corporate acceptance served only to further marginalize the genuine article.
Blues had been recorded from the start of the commercial recording industry in the nineteen-twenties and had been handed down in an oral history beginning in Africa countless generations beforehand, so there never could never be any doubt that in the long term it would endure.
Exactly what the blues is and the criteria required to authentically perform it has been endlessly speculated, most fervently during the blues beat boom (q.v. The Bonzo Dog Band - Can Blue Men Sing The Whites?), and the auteur compiler of this collection celebrating its re-invention, Joe Cushley, takes an especially eclectic view.
Taking tracks that are not essentially blues songs by artists who are not essentially blues performers, such as Tom Waits, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Mary Margaret O'Hara and Gary Lucas, Billy Childish and his Famous Headcoats and the Soft Boys, and putting them in the context of a number of idiosyncratic blues and blues-influenced artists ranging from RL Burnside to Captain Beefheart, results in an illuminating and surprisingly coherent listen. The most successful are often those that take the largest liberties with what Joe Cushley calls the "hell-hound sound."
One inevitably speculates on other artists who might have been included in place of the few slightly weaker tracks on the disc, and perhaps excluded due to licensing limitations. The most obvious omissions are Jimi Hendrix who brilliantly revitalized everything he touched, and the pioneering Howlin' Wolf, but recent champions must include PJ Harvey, the White Stripes, Dr John and Little Axe, while honourable mentions should go to Dr Feelgood for keeping the spirit of the blues alive during the punk wars. I look forward to these and names yet unknown to us to inform the sequel.

2 out of 5 stars Not too much to do with the blues.......2002-04-08

This cd bills itself as the birth of the nu-blues whatever that is supposed to mean. The closest it gets to blues are the songs by R.L. Burnside and North Mississippi Allstars.I just don't get some of the selections such as a song from 1967 by Captain Beefheart. What were they thinking? There are some listenable songs especially the Olu Dara tune which is probably the best selection on the cd. Most of it I just kept hitting the next button and before I knew it I was at the end of the cd. One interesting track is by Johnny Dowd who sounds like Zeb on Green Acres singing a hillbilly/blues tune. It is one of the bright spots and I would like to check out more of this guy. The Nick Cave tune is vulgar and unnecessary. If these guys ever compile another cd check out artists like Richard Johnston and James Mathus and His Knockdown Society. Why artists like this were overlooked I don't know. Well maybe next time.
