Ex-Waxwing (Seattle band) frontman Rocky Votolato's third solo record is whispery and understated, full of regret but also the quiet resolve of a man looking forward to whatever's left. It's a warmer, more open record than his comparably feisty 2003 record Suicide Medicine, and upon first listen it's tempting to say he's shaved too much off the edges. Keep listening, and the music opens like cracks in a desert, split up and fractured by Votolato's dusty tales of desperation and fleeting redemption. He starts the record with "White Daisy Passing," singing lyrics like "I'm going down to sleep/On the bottom of the ocean/'Cause I couldn't let go" that contrast with the song's gentle gallop and Simon & Garfunkel aesthetics. Folk and country influences appear in the hand slap rhythm and harmonica of "Tinfoil Hats," along with the Dust Bowl dystopia of "The Night's Disguise." From the sound of Makers, Votolato's having a hard time putting his past in the past. But if he keeps putting out such lovely and evocative music, he has a solid career as a solo artist ahead of him at the very least. -Matthew CookeAlbum Description
Soundtracked by the songs of Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash, Rocky had an unconventional upbringing on a horse ranch in Texas before his mother moved the family to Seattle. There he spent his high school years discovering the underground punk/indie scene. Inspired by bands like Fugazi, he and his brother Cody (founding member of hardcore/art combo The Blood Brothers) formed a punk band called Waxwing. Over the course of three increasingly accomplished solo albums, Rocky has matured into a truly phenomenal talent. "Makers" is an amazing album of songs that seem to have been scratched into a boxcar wall by a worn out and lonesome ghost. "Votolato has stones like Bruce Springsteen and hangover wisdom like Paul Westerberg" - Alternative Press.

Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz of Talking Heads handled producing chores for this 1988 release, which happily coincided with the Melody Makers' "reggae period." The title track captures the true reggae spirit--serious philosophy, spliffs, sunshine, and plenty fun. The group had yet to reach full maturity, but Conscious Party, which spun off hit singles "Tumbling Down" and "Tomorrow People," still stands as one of their most successful. --Elena Oumano

In 1994, Kristin Hersh took a sabbatical from her beloved and beleaguered Throwing Muses to record her first solo album, Hips and Makers. Mostly acoustic, entirely personal, Hips' songs touch the core of Hersh's daily life, specifically as it involves her husband and family, topics she rarely explored with her band. Produced by ex-Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye, Hips and Makers infuses the singer/songwriter tradition with a jolt of complexity and authority. Hersh still favors the taut, stream of consciousness lyrics she whittled down to the bone with the Muses, but she never veers into confessional "dear diary" territory, although she does allow peeks into a world where clotheslines, bee stings, and the occasional ghost aren't unusual. Musically more measured and clearly quieter than any Muses disc, Hips showcases Hersh's fluttery voice atop powerful acoustic guitar with flourishes from cello and piano. "Your Ghost," the album's moody and dazzling opener, features backup vocals by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe and sets the tone for the album: like a family, it's happy on the surface, intriguing when explored. --Shawn Stewart

Since Bruce Hornsby first infiltrated the pop landscape in 1986 with the year's most socially conscious ballad, the Virginia native has proven himself to be a gifted singer-songwriter, piano player, and bandleader. All of those talents are much in evidence on this double CD of live material culled from his band's last two years on the road. A pianist with the chops to evoke everyone from Keith Jarrett and McCoy Tyner to Floyd Cramer and Vince Guaraldi, Hornsby takes a number of opportunities to stretch out here, including a solo introduction to his breakthrough hit, "The Way It Is," that explains why he almost ended up on the Windham Hill label. Not surprisingly, the latter-day Grateful Dead sideman also gives his band plenty of instrumental slack, which can make lengthy workouts like "Spider Fingers" a bit daunting for pop listeners. But devotees of Hornsby's more straightforward material will still find much to love here, including haunting renditions of "The End of the Innocence" (written with Don Henley) and Hornsby's more recent "Fortunate Son" (not to be confused with the Creedence song). There's not much that could be called noise here, but Here Come the Noise Makers proves Hornsby is still a jack-of-all-trades and master of many. --Bill Forman

Elgar's Dream of Gerontius is, in effect, a sung tone poem and resides at the core of English choral music; it is the supreme achievement among Elgar's large-scale works. Interestingly, its premiere came in the last months of the 19th century, a time, much like our own, when fluctuating styles and experimentation existed alongside a lingering and powerful devotion to the older, traditional ways. Thus, the release of this classic 1975 recording (intelligently paired with another sumptuous, musically significant choral work, The Music Makers) is not only timely but serves to remind us of how successfully Elgar bridged both Romanticism's dwindling currents and the swelling streams of impressionism and atonality. This performance, featuring the 86-year-old Adrian Boult in total, rock-steady command, shows what magic can happen when conductor and performers are in complete sync, musically and philosophically. The melodies are abundant and beautiful, the choral writing is magnificent, and the sound, especially in Gerontius, is full and vibrant. --David Vernier

Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers have finally resigned themselves to the fact that genes are greater than inspiration. While most rock brood-- Jakob Dylan, Jeff Buckley, Donovan Leitch--desperately kick to distance themselves from their paternal heritage, with each new album the Marley children of Jamaica move closer toward father Bob Marley's sound and acumen. On their eighth album Fallen Is Babylon, the Melody Makers surreally echo the late '70s, electric reggae work of their senior. Ziggy's voice has matured into a honeyed growl that is virtually indistinguishable from that of his father. The consciousness-rooted songwriting picks up where Bob left off with later tracks like `"Coming in from the Cold" and "Pimper's Paradise." And the whole project was consummated at the historic Tuff Gong Studio, rebuilt and rechristened Marley Music Studio. The problem is that as the Melody Makers evolve into the perfect Bob clone, they relinquish their own often imaginative identity. Stripped of the potent, passionate feel of the band's earlier discs, Fallen Is Babylon sounds like nothing more revelatory than a tribute album. --Aidin VaziriMusic Review:
