Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Customer Reviews:
My 3 yr old loves it!.......2007-03-17
This is one of my three year old's top requests for listening. She simply loves it; She hums along and can name most of the songs. I am vey pleased.
My baby loves this CD!.......2006-11-05
Of all the many CDs we were given, this is my baby's favorite. Unlike most CDs of classical music for babies, this isn't just smooth, soft music. It does have some of that, but it also has more exciting pieces like the bouncy Nutcracker music, The Flight of the Bumble Bee, and The Sabre Dance. My baby bounces and dances to this music happily. And once she's a bit older, I'm sure she's going to love "Peter the Wolf," narrated by Jack Lemmon.
A Reasonable Collection.......2004-08-11
This is a reasonable selection of works to start with as a child's introduction to Classical music. There are two main flaws - a handful of the pieces are performed rather poorly and the sound quality is muffled. But keeping the intended audience in mind and the price, it's not a bad value.

Forget what they SAY.......2003-11-10
Many of these prior reviewers complain that the abundance of operas and vocals degrate this compilation. They don't know what they're talking about. These genres are what made Classical music popular in it's age. In that era the forum for showcasing "classical music" was operas! Hence why most of these works are lost in the shuffle. Most of us know Mozart and Beethoven's compositions by ear but there are so many other great composers that existed and these CD's will show you but a PIECE. But, fair warning, these CD's show only a small fraction of the whole movement (song). If you truly dig the genre you're in for a treat, investigate!
Most Aggravating Album in the World!.......2002-05-26
This CD is the first thing I ever returned to Amazon. It is an inferior product--selections cut off abruptly before the end, volume fades and returns in the middle of a cut...production values are pure schlock here. Maybe I should have expected as much from such a sophomoric title.
A fair introduction to Classical Music.......2001-03-03
I purchased this CD because I am new to Classical Music and thought this would be a good introduction CD. There is some wonderful music on this CD. The only problem I have with this CD is every other track is Opera of one form or another. As a new listener I found that after the Opera tracks I felt I had been yelled at and it was a distraction to the other music contained on the CD. I now know to hit the skip button on my CD player just about every other track. I only gave it 3 stars because I felt put off by the vocal tracks. I believe that when someone is new to Classical Music they do not think of Opera. If you don't mind hitting the skip button a lot or if you like Opera this CD is for you!
Great for Beginners.......2000-07-14
This is a nice recording for folks who don't know much about classical music, and would serve as a wonderful introduction. It covers centuries of great music in a very listener-friendly format. I am sure that I will use this CD in my music classroom. For a seasoned classical music lover, however, the CD proves a bit frustrating, including only segments of masterworks (not even the entire movement of the Holst). I bought the CD for a few recordings, which I truly enjoy and make the CD a worthwile purchase. But I found (and I think that most classical musicians will find) that I already had many of these works in their entirety.
Exellent compilation.......2000-04-12
This is a fine collection of classical songs for those that have little experience with classical music. Howver, I truly love it.

A+.......2007-05-10
To say that I love this disc would be an understatement. I have probably listened to it 500 times. To comment on just a few of the tracks...
The "Praeludium and Allegro" is definitely the best recording anyone (except maybe Kreisler!) has ever done. The praeludium, which is almost all quarter notes, is often just blindly sawed out. Midori treats each note individually. The allegro is also nice - not rushed at all. The staggeringly difficult Skryabin-Szigeti "Etude in Thirds" tossed off with impeccable technique and spotless intonation. Sarasate's "Habanera" sparkles with a decisive 'Spanish' flavor. Elgar's "Chanson de Matin" is just plain beautiful. Also nice are inclusions of some numbers not heard hardly ever, including Bacewicz's "Oberek #2" mazurka and the Shostakovich preludes. Robert McDonald, definitely one of the best, is the able pianist for all the numbers.
Even for a trained jazz musician who thinks classical artists are overhyped, this stands out as one of the best albums........2007-04-11
Let's be honest--any kid with a violin who ever set foot in a conservatory thinks (s)he's a prodigy, the next Mehta or Yo Yo Ma, while they play the same old tired music everyone else plays, exactly as the greats play it, with hardly a shred of originality that doesn't arise out of an inability to replicate the 'masters' as well as their CD players (and that goes for jazz musicians too, but they don't get as snobby about it). The musicians who are truly great don't have any sort of attitude about their playing or their music--they just play, and they play anything, and it's great.
Midori has been one such great artist from early on. She simply had the knack. You would still want to listen to her if she was half as skilled. Every decent musician practices assiduously, seeks out the best people to learn from, makes sacrifices in life just for the chance to play for a living (even weddings and strip clubs if need be), but few have 'the knack.'
I don't know if Midori has a similar story, nor does it really matter in terms of actually making music. I know her parents moved from Osaka to the States with her when she was about ten just so she could pursue her potential--as all great students have great parents. I'm sure she didn't just pop out of the womb playing violin. But, like I wrote above, she's got the knack that you can't get through practice or training. She's just plain great.
Yes, I'm bored by classical music in general. I like 'good' music regardless of style though, and this album is so far beyond good that it belongs in whatever collection of immortal artist you may have--say: Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Johnny Cash, Billy Joel, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Shaka Khan, Luther Vandross, and--even if you have no other classical music in your collection--Midori.
Fantastic.......2006-08-11
Midori produces some amazing sounds out of her violin!
You cant go wrong with Encore! Shes brilliant.
Enjoyable listening.......2005-09-24
I enjoyed this cd especially the first three pieces. Midori played Sarasate and Paganini pretty well.
very interesting.......2005-09-13
I as watching (and listening!) her play live in Dubrovnik this summer. In this record she is equally brilliant as she is when playing live!

Profile of passion.......2000-02-20
I have not yet been in the right place at the right time to see this film but I have followed Nadja's career since she won the Naumberg competition. This is a beautiful and lovingly compiled profile of her life in music, as selected from her recording history to date (not included is the astonishing recent album of gypsy music with the Assad Brothers). I knew that the creators of this soundtrack had a spiritual affinity with their subject when I saw the Souvenir de Florence second movement selection, the Sibelius second movement, the Shostakovich Burlesque and the Rachmaninov vocalise - pieces that capture the Nadja that has always captured me. Indeed, for us long-time fans, and for anyone, this is a wonderful souvenir album of one of the most soul-possessing fiddlers of our time.
Nadja - breakthrough artist.......1999-12-30
The picture on this album cover is horrible... gotta say this up front.
Now, if I could only give a one sentence appraisal of both this CD and the documentary, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg is the one person, the one superior artist who is also a "real" person (well, who let us see that), who could possibly reach out and grab the non-classical music enthusiast and make them thirst for classical music, because they will want more of her music.
And, if there were no other reason, I love the album, but then it and the film it stems from are so rich on so many other facets. The music itself is perfect beyond reproach.
For those of us who were never completely classically inclined, like myself, we are presented with a whole person here. Nadja is not stiff and unreachable, but rather, someone who is so very much an "average joe" who loves her family and treasures her friends, perhaps with an extremely heightened awareness that we would all kill for but might kill us if we ever got there without a likewise outlet as she has with her music, but also with a "who you lookin' at" New York accent.
I'd like to see Paola Di Florio's documentary of Nadja, "Speaking in Strings" as required viewing, world-wide. I think then that classical music would have a whole new audience. Not a doubt in my mind.
Until I saw "Speaking in Strings", I thought all classical soloists were people with sticks up their behinds who talked down their noses at everyone else. Shows you what I know.
Her music reduces me to tears, in a way I never thought possible (there's an old phrase that goes -- "This guy not only knows nothing, he don't even suspect nothing").. and that was really honestly me and classical music.
I can't even watch TV now without hearing the violin in the music of shows or commercials and then instantly switching to the stereo to this or another of her albums to hear Nadja, to hear the really good stuff. I want to feel it now, and no longer being fed junk or be a passive observer.
Just my opinion, but we've shortchanged ourselves in what "feeds" us. I never knew it was missing, until I saw this documentary, which led me to buy the album, which now, happily takes me from smiles to tears throughout. So that now I am listening to it all. A whole new world has been opened up to me.
So, I give this album as many stars as there are in the heavens. I've gotten a great gift, and if I go any farther, I'll ruin it with words.
Thank you Paola and Nadja for taking the time, the caring, and to Nadja especially for letting us so deeply into her life to make sure we "got it."
Nadja, I "got it", and I now totally believe that line in the film where you say that great moments we all have are fleeting and they are only good if you "share it." You sure have shared it. Thanks.
Bravo Nadja!.......1999-10-23
Saw the film...now have the album...love both. She's an inspiration to all of us who live in the fast lane...both emotionally and professionally... Allegro Vivace Con Mucho Brio!
PS: Per the previous reviewers comment, in the days of Mozart/Beethoven, etc., it was quite customary to perform sections of long-form works independently when playing concerts...which just confirms by example that there's nothing "wrong" or low-brow about doing it now, either in concert or on a recording.
Bits and pieces winningly played.......1999-10-07
The EMI release of
(72435 56908-2) is subtitled "A Musical Companion to the Film." So I assume the music herein is not from the film but a sampling that represents, as the soloist is quoted as saying, "the variety and growth of my musical life so far." The writer is Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and the film is to be about her life as an artist. But none of that need concern us here. As a rule I object to movements being played out of the context of the work from which they come--e.g., the Adagio movement of the Sibelius Violin Concerto--but in this case the opening selection, Saint-Saens "The Swan," was so winningly played that I found myself liking this program very much indeed. Other composers represented here are listed above in this website. The artist is given more than adequate assistance from several pianists, chamber players, and the London Symphony Orchestra, making me suspect the selections are drawn from earlier recordings. Nevertheless, for those who like violin music in general and do not care if you hear an entire composition or just part of one, or for those who simply admire this artist, I can recommend this CD.

This is Sarah Chang's second encore collection, recorded when she was all of 15. (The debut recital was made when she was 9.) As in the previous collection, and most of her other recordings, Chang stays mostly with the Romantic era, although she does play the March from Prokofiev's Love for Three Oranges with a good deal of bite. This disc doesn't offer a profound musical experience, but if you like to be amazed by dazzling violin playing, it's a treat throughout. Bravo to Chang for reviving showpieces like those by Bazzini and Sarasate. Charles Abramovic, whose name you have to search for, plays well but could be more assertive. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
At best these are okay performances..........2006-12-04
...of these pieces...for some reason some of the recordings have a particularly dry sound -- "Hora staccato" and "Valse scherzo" sound like the bow was haired with sandpaper...much better performances can be found elsewhere -- look for Michael Rabin and, of course, Heifetz.
Simply Sarah is simply delightful!.......2005-12-21
I couldn't stop smiling while I listened to these bon-bons. She is an outstanding musician and the material, while definitely on the light side, is totally pleasing.
Fantastic! Most Thrilling!.......1999-01-06
This album features mainly bravura showpieces and lyrical pieces. In the showpieces, Sarah Chang's virtuosity is second to none. Her flawless, electrifying accounts of Bazzini's Dance of the Goblins, Sarasate's Tarantella and Zapateado, etc., are very likely the best ever. In contrast to the dazzlers, she makes listeners realize her remarkable versatility when she sings most winsomely in the lyrical pieces, with a spellbinding tone. Two seldom recorded pieces, Mendelssohn's On Wings of Song and Sibelius's Nocturne, are simply mesmerizing.
In conclusion, this disc contains many familiar encore pieces as well as some lesser-known ones. Miss Chang breathes invigorating new air into the well-known pieces, and makes obscure pieces sound equally compelling. Every track on this CD is a gem. Sarah Chang demonstrates (as usual) her peerless, stupefying technical mastery, which is well blended with her marvelous tone and mature musicianship. IMHO, this is probably Miss Chang's finest disc so far. A CD to treasure!
Simply Dazzling!.......1999-01-01
Another wonderful showcase of Ms. Chang's superb and passionate musical talent.

Expensive, but well worth it........1998-11-20
I bought this for my grandbabies, ages one and three "to stimulate their brains" This CD set is far, far better the ones touted to do this. I love it, the babies love it, my daughter-in-law loves it! Very rhythmic, lots of fun, top-notch quality.

Sensual Classics must have been a hit, particularly the cover photo of a man and woman undressing one another. For here we have Sensuous Classics II, complete with a book of eight more make-out photos sprawled over 10 foldout panels. There are no liner notes (no room, I guess). Again, the selections are absurd and the performance standard uneven. From the first note, Lawrence Foster's performance with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo of Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1 goes limp, if you'll pardon the expression. By contrast, Heitor Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 with soprano Arlene Auger and the cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic is bold and sensuous and memorable. --Gwendolyn Freed
Customer Reviews:
good selection -- not bad performances.......2002-10-03
I agree with the previous reviewers that these are well selected pieces, at least if the standard is potentially to set the mood for romance. I have listened to this album a number of times and find the performances quite adequate -- I disagree that the perforamnces are bad. The roster of who is performing the pieces is not a lot of folks generally considered to be slouches. If these are bad performances, I think a lot of people would have trouble recognizing good performances.
The one thing I find really disappointing about this album is its price, which I find very high for a compilation album. For bettervalue, I would suggest looking for some of the many "adagio" albums that Polygram puts out that have 2 well-filled CDs with very nice selections of generally quiet, relaxing, romantic music (a good one is "Evening Adagios").
Better yet, buy some albums on the Naxos label... that have some of the pieces on any of these compilations and listen to all of the pieces on each CD. You'll get good value for your money and hear a lot of very good music too!
Good selection, poor performance........1999-08-23
I picked up this CD because it seemed to be a great selection of my favorite romantic classical tunes. I found the performances to be poor overall, however I was indeed pleased with the selection.
This CD might be considered a bargain if you are looking for performances from most of the all-time favorites. But for quality performances, look elsewhere.
