Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Paul Fejos's Lonesome is a story about star-crossed lovers who meet at Coney Island, are separated after a violent mishap on a roller coaster, and are finally reunited to the heartfelt strains of an Irving Berlin tune. Just these bare bones of a plot invite great ideas for a musical score that connotes sentimental mayhem, an inspiration that enticed the Alloy Orchestra to create its own as an alternative to the Movietone soundtrack made for the film's 1928 release. The Alloys provide an ambitious and engaging substitute, using synthesizer, accordion, and percussion to create interludes of romantic melody, carnival waltzes, urban tribal beats, hoochie-coochie rhythms, and a gramophonically simulated vocal tribute to Berlin's "Always." This deeply surreal and charming effort can best be described as futuristic nostalgia. --Joseph Lanza

Lonesome Dove.......2007-03-30
I ordered this item through Amazon and have contacted the individual I ordered it from as well as Amazon. If you will note, it has been over one (1) month since I purchased the item and have not received it yet.
An Honest Review.......2007-01-17
WONDERFUL SOUND TRACK!! INCREDIBLY MOVING AND BITTERSWEET!
Every track on this CD is worth listening to - it is so rare to own a CD that you do not press the 'skip' button occassionally!
I would highly encourage all who are interested to purchase this CD.
Excellent quailty movie score.......2005-09-15
This movie score ranks with the best in capturing the spirit of the western theme. Already should be rated a classic.
THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE.......2005-03-29
This is my favorite movie of all time. The casting was perfect for each character played in this movie. I couldnt make this movie more perfect than it was already made. Like i said the this is the best movie that has ever been made, and i have seen alot of movies.
A beautiful and pastoral soundtrack.......2002-12-26
Basil Poledouris, known mostly for his bombastic action music, gives us an extremely well composed lush, beautiful soundtrack to Lonesome Dove. The "Theme from Lonesome Dove" which opens the score is simply outstanding and is one of the most beautiful pieces of music i've ever heard. It is a perfect setting for the open plains and vast, pastoral landscape. This wonderful theme occurs differently in several other tracks and in full force in the final track, "Goodbye Ladies/Finale". "Night Mares" contains noble fanfares for horn and various percussion effects to accompany the theme once again. Other highlights are "On the Trail" with its upbeat drive to it and the final 2 tracks that take the breath away with that main theme. Also various instruments besides the regular symphony orchestra are used in this score to represent the setting of the film, such as fiddles, banjos, accordions, and the like. You can hear these instruments in tracks such as "Arkansas Pilgrim", "The Leaving", and "Murdering Horse Thieves". I think that Basil Poledouris should compose for more films like this because his music is truly amazing and leaves you wanting more. A very good soundtrack that gets the best rating and is well deserved.

Excellence!.......2007-04-22
These recordings range back to 1994, with a number of tracks being from Silva Screen's "Music from the Films of Clint Eatwood" compilation, with Derek Wadsworth conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic.
Those tracks are: "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", "A Fistful of DOllars", "For a Few Dollars More", and "Two Mules for Sister Sara". "In The Line Of Fire' also appeared on that CD, performed electronically by Mark Ayres.
The next bunch of tracks is from Silva Screen's 1996 compilation, "Cinema Paradise: The Classic Film Music of Ennio Morricone", which included the majority of tracks here such as the extensive The Mission Suite, The Untouchables, Casulaties of War, Once Upon a Time In America, 1900, Chi Mai, Marco Polo, Once Upon a Time In The West (two tracks), Cinema Paradise, and The Good the Bad and the Ugly - Ecstacy of Gold, mostly being conducted by Paul Bateman, with Nic Raine doing some of the conducting duties as well.
Hamlet is from Silva's 1997 "Cinema's Classic Romances" compilation, while "The Thing" is from Silva's 2001 "Essential John Carpenter".
A Fistful of Dynamite - Duck You Sucker is from 2002's Way Out West: Essential Western Film Music Collection Volume Two.
The remaing tracks were newly recorded in 2004 for this release:
Days of Heaven, Exorcist II, Guns for San Sebastian, Moses the Lawgiver, My Name is Nobody, The Five Man Army, The Red Tent, The Men From Shiloh and The Sicilian Clan.
Highly recommended.
"his domain of film scoring is legendary ~ Ennio Morricone".......2004-10-07
Silva America once again has outdone themselves with "Once Upon A Time:The Essential Ennio Morricone Film Music Collection", a double disc collection worth their weight in GOLD! ~ Morricone creates visual moods for each film he scores...action, adventure, mystery, romance, sentimental and suspense...the list could go on.
Ennio Morricone was born in Rome on October 11, 1928...attended the Santa Cecilia Conservatory...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s, then the WESTERNS and his name became a household word in the film industry ~ a new kind of western was on the horizon and Morricone was commissioned to score "A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS" [1964] for Sergio Leone featuring Clint Eastwood, spaghetti westerns were born ~ next "FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE" [1965] ~ and a bigger budget film "THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY" [1966], again featuring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and a third Eli Wallach whose performance was magical to watch on the big screen ~ violence and revenge gives Morricone an opportunity to feature electric guitars, flutes and jew's harp blending with a non lyrical chorus mixed with brass, strings, percussion with full orchestration that simply took your breath away...example is "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST" [1968], featuring Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards and our hero Charles Bronson the mysterious harmonica player, director Sergio Leone's tribute to the American Western, pulled out all the stops ~ the Western was just a small part of Maestro Morricone's career, in the next paragraph take a gander of just what our icon of film music accomplished.
Our composer didn't stop there as "ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA" [1984], featuring Robert De Niro, James Woods and Elizabeth McGovern, another Sergio Leone film..."THE MISSION" [1986], featuring Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons and Aldan Quinn, is probably one of Morricone's crowning scores receiving an Academy Award nomination, very haunting and classical genre in substance..."THE UNTOUCHABLES" [1987], featuring Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and Robert De Niro during the Al Capone '30s crime organization, Morricone conjures a powerful and dynamic arrangement of his unmistakable theme..."CINEMA PARADISO" [1988], featuring Phillippe Noiret, Antonella Attili and Pupella Maggio from director Giuseppe Tomatore as he recalls his early childhood, the score immediately captures your heart, so tender and compelling as Morricone can only deliver.
City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra featuring conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine, Derek Wadsworth ~ Crouch End Festival Chorus featuring Choir Master David Temple ~ vocals performed by Charlotte Kinder, Marie Kopecka and Jill Washington ~ guitar, percussion and keyboards performed by Gareth Williams ~ all in all did a magnicent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for over 250 films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which was long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand, scoring as many as over a half dozen films as year.
This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Morricone's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is James Fitzpatrick [producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

Customer Reviews:
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

This is a hauntingly beautiful CD. I have played it over and over and have never gotten tired of it. I know people who have requested that this music be played at their funerals. A great sound track that brings to mind the struggles of Gus and Woodrow and of course, of us all.

Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

E is incredible.......2005-10-05
I can't believe how well put together this score is, as well as the two tracks that E sings in.
Track number 9 is great. Has a perfect somber, desolate feel to it. Contrasted with track 14 which is uplifting and hopeful. I love scores to soundtracks and this soundtrack is filled with incredible songs. Tracks 9 and 14 are some of the best I have ever heard.
"Levity" soundtrack is would be a fine addition to your "E" collection........2005-08-04
Very melodic and melancholy, Mark Everett ("E", "Eels") shapes up a wonderful soundscape to a fine little film. Playing the bulk of the instruments himself and singing on one track, "E" & "Eels" fans will find this soundtrack a nice addition to their collection. Softer in tone and sound than much of his work, the "Levity" soundtrack does possess some similarities to the "Eels" newest recording, but with almost no vocals the songs instead come to life through some fine subtle playing and direction from Mr. Everett. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone interested in any of "E"'s or the "Eels recordings and to anyone looking for something soothing and melodic to listen to on a warm summer day.
Though not perfect, still an excellent piece of work.......2004-02-06
Hiring a noted indie rock musician to do your soundtrack will gain you instant noteriety. No matter what one thinks of "About A Boy", Badly Drawn Boy's jaw-droppingly beautiful soundtrack was a highlight, and even better than the actual BDB album that followed. And who can't forget "Chelsea Walls"? So, hiring the enigmetic E to do a soundtrack seems like a good idea, right?
Correct. Don't get me wrong - there are a few downsides to the album, most notably the length (pay this much for under 35 minutes of music?) and only two Eels songs, but it really is worth it. "What I Remember Most" is a haunting opener, which faintly recalls Belle & Sebastian's work with Todd Solondoz's "Storytelling" soundtrack. The instrumentals are short, pretty, but establish the effective mood RIGHT AWAY, something not many other scores can do. The latter suites that close the album are undeniably moving.
The two Eels songs, both under 3 minutes, are worthwhile in themselves. While the acoustic "Skywriting" is extremely worthy, it's "Taking A Bath In Rust" that steals the show, with it's soft-loud scratchy-voicings and the lush & memorable string arrangement that follows. It's amazing it wasn't a single, because it easily could have charted.
Again, it isn't perfect. Some of the "themes" are recycled too oft, but again, it's a minor complaint to a great work. It's not the greatest soundtrack ever made, but it's a very worthy entry into that "indie-rock soundtrack" subgenre, and an enjoyable one at that.
Amazing.......2003-11-02
This soundtrack is amazing. The movie is amazing, the actors are amazing, and Mr. Everett is amazing. You are lost without seeing this movie... and once you see it, you know you'll be lost without the soundtrack.
Brief songs, somber instrumentals, beautiful simplicity.......2003-10-28
I'm a big fan of the Eels, especially their first works (Beautiful Freak, Electroshock Blues, and Daisies of the Galaxy). This score is an excellent compilation, much of which is based on the same few basic melodies. These deceptively simple patterns unfold into a beautiful variety of music. Check out my favorite track from the album "Haunted Piano #1" for a sample. "Running the Bath" is probably most representative of the overall tone and feel of the album. Levity's brevity (gwah hah hah!) is the only downside. All but 2 of the tracks fall into the one to two and a half minute mark, making some of them seem like samples instead of full tracks. Given the ambient nature of the pieces they really should go on longer. Definately go for it if you are a fan of the Eels or any other tingly, experi-pop-orchestrock. Keep in mind most of the album is instrumental, in case you need "singing or guitars" to enjoy music.

Customer Reviews:
High Lonesome Yakking.......2006-04-11
As for the movie (DVD), I liked the "yakking" between the songs. I have had the pleasureable experience of personally meeting the great Bill Monroe on several occasions and enjoyed hearing him talk about the roots that borne the lyrics of some of his hits. I have also met some of the other stars on this DVD. I however, would not want the monologue on a CD, just the songs.
Also, Earl Scruggs in his hey-day was the best all time!
New Release this Spring- 3 Bonus Tracks!.......2002-11-16
A remastered version of the "High Lonesome" soundtrack album will be coming out this spring. It will include three additional tracks -- the spoken dialogue will be cut out -- so hang on to your old copies, they are soon to be collectors items.
ALREADY FORGOTTEN.......2002-06-23
BEFORE THE "OH BROTHER" SOUNDTRACK THERE WAS THIS ONE. THOUGH I DO NOT FORGET GREAT BLUGRASS MUSIC CDs. THIS WILL FOREVER BE ONE OF MY FAVORITES. ONLY DRAWBACK I NOTICED WAS THE "YACKING" BETWEEN TRACKS. TOO BAD YOU CAN NOT DELETE THAT SOMEHOW.
Bluegrass to the Max!.......2001-05-23
Imagine you are sitting around after dinner one night and your guests grab thier guitars, banjoes, and mandolins and start playing a bit. You are captivated by the bluegrass sound -- you cannot hear enough of it -- plaintive, melancholy, exuberant, and mesmerizing all at once. Or it may be a Sunday afternoon and the musicians are together again -- you ask them to "play just one more song" -- and you hear this incredible syncopated banjo --mandolin rhythm that you will never forget. These words describe only two of the tracks on this album. This album is a must for Bluegrass fans and a necessity for music lovers in general. You will enjoy it immensely from the rousing mountain songs to the spiritual ones as well. Take my word for it, your soul needs this music!
Great intro to Blue Grass.......2000-06-21
Fire on the banjo and heart breaking longing are melded together for one sweet cd. Fans of good song writing and masterful playing looking to get a feel of Blue Grass music will appreciate this collection of some of the finest examples of the High Lonesome sound on record. Some songs are only available on this disk! I am a Tom Waits, John Coltrane, and Grateful Dead fan, and I continue to listen to and love this disc three years after getting it.

Album Description
Rebuilding the Lost Oz Before Judy Garland sang Over the Rainbow, Oz had inspired over 200 songs. This CD provides an overview of the rich early musical legacy of Oz. Most of the original music of Oz is associated with Baums stage works: The Wizard of Oz (1902), The Woggle-Bug (1905), and The Tik-Tok Man of Oz (1913). In the absence of published vocal scores, music was gathered in the form of published songs, piano or orchestral medley arrangements, and manuscripts. For the Wizard suite, I drew upon Tietjens own manuscript indications and a 1902 orchestral selection by Hilding Anderson, who would later orchestrate for Gershwin shows. The Tik-Tok Man selection is a 1913 orchestral arrangement by J. Bodewalt Lampe, who, like Gottschalk, was a pioneering film composer. From these scores, it was a matter of laying down the parts track by track; fortunately, advances in digital sampling synthesis have allowed me to record this music within a reasonable budget without sounding like Switched-on-Baum. The scores and parts are available for performance. The Cowardly Lions share of this collaboration was done before David and I met, through hours of on-line conversation. The audience for The Wizard of Oz in 1902 largely arrived in horse drawn carriages to see the first stage show in history with electrically controlled lighting. For this project to have been coordinated through the internet and realized digitally is a wonder worthy of Baums imagination.

Wonderful Restorations.......2006-06-04
James Doyle does a wonderful job restoring and re-creating these early scores which would otherwise be lost to time. You should also check out his recording "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz - Toronto Cast Recording", a completely new musical production which is extremely faithful to Baum's original book.
What?.......2000-07-20
Can someone PLEASE help me? I love the story of The Wizard of Oz. I'm sure this is a great CD, but does it have any words or is it just music. If some one can help me I would be vary thankful!
Excellent, historical, entertaining.......2000-01-01
The Hungry Tiger CD _Before the Rainbow_ is excellent and I recommend it highly. I might (or might not) have preferred "period instruments" to the synthesizer, but then it would have cost too much to produce and we'd be without anything. My roommate/landlady said the final grand march from Patchwork Girl sounded like "roller skating music." But that was intended as a compliment. No Oz fan can live without this recording.
