5 out of 5 stars thanks naxos.......2007-03-18

first i want to thank the folks at naxos for all the great music they have provided over the years at a budget price. i have about 30 albums released by naxos, and they are all wonderful. this album of lute music is a classic listening experience for late nights or lazy sunday afternoons. it is a beautiful quiet trip back into the sounds of another time and place. recorded in a church in england, the acoustics of that building come through clearly, giving the overall sound a haunting tone. the lute playing is itself is gorgeous. nobody looking for a recording of lute playing could go wrong here. naxos also has released a series of solo lute albums featuring the works of sylvius leopold weiss, with robert barto performing, which i recommend heartily, as well. thanks again, naxos.

5 out of 5 stars Superb album.......2007-01-12

This is an excellent album. It's currently my favorite lute album. It's beautiful, relaxing, and enjoyable to listen to. This album is highly recommended to anyone who enjoys lute music.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2006-10-11

Perfect. Timeless, gentle music. I have given many massages to this music (can't stand most new age stuff). Has the ancient sound that is exactly what I was looking for. Strong recommendation: Glenn Gould, consort of Musicke by William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons. One of my favorite albums EVER. Incredibly powerful, primal, simple.

5 out of 5 stars Simply WONDERFUL!!!! just amazing........2006-02-01

One of the best-buy i have made since long time ago. A high quality CD that can be enjoyed in every moment. Beautiful melodies, you can feel the ancient times with those, and you can try to imagine how could it be medieval life.

5 out of 5 stars A Journey Back In Time!.......2003-12-11

This is a wonderful CD! Beautifully recorded in St. Andrews Church in Toddington, England! The quiet melodies of each piece are different enough that you will never get bored playing it over and over again! The next time you have a bad day, or come home from work some night with frayed nerves, try this!Turn out all of the lights, light a candle in a jar, preferably a scented one (sounds awfully 60's doesn't it!) put this CD on the stereo, get comfortable, let your mind drift back to the 16th century, watch the candle light flicker on the walls and ceiling and feel yourself relax!!!This CD is a lot cheaper than a bottle of tranquilizers or a visit to the shrink!BEWARE: Don't substitute Lute music played on an acoustic guitar! A Lute has different dynamics, nuances and colours!Good Listening To You!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ever wondered what was before Bach, Lully, or Palestrina?.......2007-04-29

During the days of the Renaissance, the madrigal was one
of the most popular musical forms and outputs. The King's Singers, a modern-day all male vocal group, demonstrate the authentic sound of which these 34 chosen madrigals may have been performed. In the Renaissance, in place of sopranos and altos, there were countertenors (men who sang falsetto in a feminine range). That's what these guys do; just listen to the first few and you'll automatically be transported back to this magical and sort of other-worldly time. If you've been to Renaissance fairs, it will make you think of those, too.

The King's Singers offer 34 well-chosen madrigals from composers like John Dowland, Hans Leo Hassler, Clement Jannequin and some composers who wished to remain anonymous. They are grouped by the different languages to show that the madrigal wasn't just the rage in Italy where it had originated but at various other places all over Europe, the hub of the music world. The Italian ones come first, then in English, French, Spanish and German. The best one in the set is "La Guerre" which runs 6 minutes, and is an incredible vocal showpiece. It's even very funny at times.

If you want to hear exactly how Renaissance madrigals sound, this is the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous!!A delicious recording!!!.......2004-10-01

O`Dette! The lutanist that would become popular in Dowlands time! he seems to me like a Leonhardt on lute.I find the lute no less expressive and enchanting than harpsichord or piano when I listen to Mr O`Dette

5 out of 5 stars Rock guitarist turned lutanist.......2002-08-05

I listen to this album over and over and never get tired of it. O'Dette's interpretations keep sounding fresh and alive, perhaps because of his rock background. This was the popular music of the time and he plays it that way. There's no dusty mustiness of age hanging over it.

The compilation of different albums is great; different instrument combinations and vocal pieces interspersed. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Recommended Corelli Memento.......2007-03-26

This is Corelli at his best, with all of those spine-tingling "high" notes. There is a version of Cavalleria/Pagliacci(on 2 separate CDs)by Jussi Bjorling, my other favorite tenor, which serves as an interesting contrast to the Corelli version. I found the Corelli take to be the superior of the two, in this case, although there is little to fault in the Bjorling offerings.

5 out of 5 stars Best Stereo Cav/Pag.......2006-11-01

If you need to show somebody WHY Franco Corelli was the most exciting tenor of the last half of the 20th century, just plop this CD in your player. Corelli is electrifying in both these operas and has a fine supporting cast (well except for the Nedda, but Pagliacci thankfully is an opera that won't be ruined if you have a so-so one). Gobbi is his typical creepy self and Sereni is manly. The conducting keeps things going at a great pace. The Cav is even better. De Los Angeles is a surprisingly good Santuzza.

5 out of 5 stars Text Book Bel Canto Technique. . ........2005-12-22

Corelli is a God: never has anyone had a command of Bel Canto
technique like him. Some complain that he is loud and vulgar. Well,
that is a complaint that has been made about Verdi, Italian Opera, and
Italian culture in general. I am in complete envy of anyone who might have heard him in the theater. Can you imagine what kind
of frisson this "loud and vulgar" voice could have created? Not to
mention his stunning sex appeal. THE tenor of this century, but
divine in a different way from Callas. His SINGING is the key to
his glory: completely free, squillo beyond human understanding, and
because of his completely free upper mechanism, his breath control
was simply stunning.

These recordings are must have-s: De los Angeles is a young, vulnerable Santuzza (unlike the dangerous reading that Callas gives it). Instead of perpetrating the death of Turridu, the Santuzza of de los Angeles seems to have stumbled innocently into the situation. Her disclosing of the affair of Turridu and Lola to Alfio is the hurt confession of a young girl, as opposed to the crafty reading that Callas
gives the scene. The conducting of Sabatini is urgent and propels the
drama forward. Cavalleria is a strange piece architecturally: it sometimes gives the impression of being an oratorio with its extended
orchestral passages and choruses. Of course, Corelli in the final
scene leave no piece of scenery un-chewed, but his noble tone makes
him a sympathetic Turridu. Unlike the Turridi-s of De Stefano and Pavarotti, Corelli turns Turridu into a confused adolescent, rather than a mature man making selfish choices.

As for Pagliacci: the Canio of Gobbi is searing in its intensity, and
the Nedda of Amara (again, compared to Callas, ALWAYS one
must compare to Callas) is youthful and rather un-complex, though
beautifully sung and completely convincing. Of course, Corelli is
THE Canio, brooding, sullen, frightening. He does not come across
as middle aged (Vickers), but a virile man in his prime, "fatto cornuto"
by his wife.

As recordings come and go in and out of print, snatch this up NOW.
I have 4 recordings of Cav/Pag: my understanding of these pieces would not really be complete without this one.

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked jewel!.......2004-05-26

This double-recording of two very famous verismo-operas is absolutely stunning. For one it has the most beautiful, touching Santuzza in the velvety Victoria de los Angeles and the most erotic Turridu in the hot-blooded Franco Corelli. Victoria's Santuzza never screeches or sounds vulgar but is a wounded, loving soul crying for help. The incredible beauty of her "Voi lo sapete o mamma" is proof for how sublime "verismo" (This so often abused word) can be. Verismo is a type of opera, a unique style of singing, not tricks, gimmicks or mannerisms.
The Pagliacci with the fierce Amara and the unequalled Gobbi presents us one of the most intense Canios on disc. In short: Buy this and be floored by this beauty and drama!

5 out of 5 stars Bravissimo!.......2002-11-27

Rudolf Bing once said that Franco Corelli, with his handsome look and grandiose voice, in his time was opera incarnated. Yes, after listening to this electrified version of Pagliacci, it would be hard to disagree. When you listen to it you actually can see the drama goes on. In the highlights Maestro von Matacic push the orchestra to the edge and Corelli gives his all. It's unbelievable.
It will be hard to find any other versions with more theatrical intensity. This is a firstchoice among all versions of Pagliacci.

The Cavalleria rusticana is not so good, it`s too unbalanced with bad sound. And I think the maincause for this is the mixing of two very different singers like de los Angeles and Corelli. Sounds like Corelli are standining twenty meters away from the microphone while she is just few centimeters away from it. And of course I don`t mean the intro for the tenor: ...O Lola..., that is sung off stage.
It is the Pagliacci I give five stars and three for the Cavalleria rusticana.

Piffaro discs make this sedentary fool want to get up and dance. Renaissance dance music is a much-underrated source of general delight, anyway. You don't have to be the kind of specialist listener who loves medieval masses to get a kick out of this tasty, highly rhythmic music--the disco of an earlier era. The tunes are appealing, the sounds of the varied instruments consistently delightful. I rate discs of Renaissance dances not so much by their authenticity, a debatable matter anyway, but rather by their danceability. Piffaro discs rank consistently high in this respect, and they are realistically recorded. --Leslie Gerber

    5 out of 5 stars Triumphant!.......2006-12-01

This is truly one of the best albums of Renaissance music currntly available! Purely instrumental! Much of it appears to be music for a royal court event or the like, with much use of brass and wind instruments. There are also many selections for the festival setting, usually involving the bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy. Too many albums of ancient music "pad" the content with monotonous choral polyphonic selections, perhaps starting out with one or two really good instrumental pieces. However, they did not do that in this one!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Renaissance Faire. Buy it!.......2005-11-15

'Piffaro The Renaissance Band' is a Philadelphia group who has done several superior albums of Renaissance music for the label 'Archiv', late of Deutche Grammaphone, now part of Polygram. I was astonished when I heard from a student of one of the directors, Robert Wiemken, that the band is paid virtually nothing to make the record and have it distributed. While I would expect that from a minor label, it is surprising that an act should make it to Deutche Grammaphone and not be paid for their recording. I go into this minor digression because I am especially impressed by this recording and all their others as well.

I do take issue with it's being labelled a recording of 'wind' music, as there is ample representation from the family of string instruments, most famously the guitar and the hurdy gurdy.

Although I really enjoy 'old music', I'm not an expert on it, but I set out to distinguish this music from modern stuff, and the two I can find are the presence here of a lot of drone instruments such as the bagpipe and the hurdy gurdy and the absence of instruments such as the clarinet which give us that lushly woody tenor we hear in pieces such as 'Rapsody in Blue' or in some of Kurt Weill's German stage pieces. We also certainly miss the rich sounds of the piano, as the pianoforte has not been invented yet.

If you like old music, this band is a 'must hear'!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Worth the Listening.......2004-01-26

Simply lovely. Some whimsical, some more technically serious. In all, definitely worth the money and the time. One of my new favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Superb musicianship on ancient instruments...........2001-10-03

I wish composers were still writing for hurdy-gurdy @ crumhorn...what a wonderful sound. I especially liked "La Parma". I do believe a modern tunesmith has taken that melody @ recently made a rather haunting popular song from it; a female vocalist, I think. If anyone out there can remember what the name of that modern tune is @ will post it here, it will save me some on-going mental annoyance. You won't go wrong in buying this album!

5 out of 5 stars Piffaro Renaissance Band Superb.......2001-05-20

This CD has me dancing in the streets. I have played holes in the recording. The musicianship is extraordinary with excitement, love and a great warm sense of pleasure taken by everyone involved. Renaissance instruments are not generally known for subtlety or nuance, but these players work miracles. The percussion sections are also integral to the whole and thrilling, where appropriate. Piffaro, please keep your music coming.

    5 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2004-01-13

Just like with Wagner there was no possibility to perform it in the original language. If the "Amazon Customer" whose only aim in life seems to be showing off and playing God by explaining why he knows so much better than aknowledged experts like Steane, Porter and Kesting KNEW ANYTHING he'd know that too! Tebaldi sang Tatyana in Italian too!
That such a RARITY was performed came about through Callas' personal wish and fight for the revival of forgotten masterpieces. Callas shines as Ifigenia, I'd rather have this by her than nothing. Also, check out her Armida and Alceste... Now if these were uncut, it would be HEAVEN!

2 out of 5 stars Callas is overrated.......2003-12-17

Only diehard Callas enthusiasts and those who already know the work well should consider buying this CD. To begin with, the opera is sung in Italian-when Gluck actually made a point of writing it in French! In addition, the male singers are all woefully inadequate, and Sonzogno's Gluck sounds more like bad Puccini. As usual with Callas, there are thrilling moments (for instance, the wonderful opening scene), but they never add up to a complete portrayal, and, although she sings with great elegance and poise, the overall peformance is disappointing. Those who wish to hear what wonders she could accomplish in Gluck should listen to her Alceste, which is another matter altogether.

5 out of 5 stars Apollo's Lyre come to life.......2005-05-03

Five hundred years ago, a humble lute student by the name of Vidal recorded his master's compositions in a hand-drawn tabulature book. Well aware of the ill-fate befalling musical masterpieces with the passage of time and generations, he decided to embellish the book's pages with fantastic hand-painted scenes - "so that even the unlearned man, seduced by its visual beauty, may preserve it and pass it on intact."

It is thanks to Vidal's foresight that today this precious manuscript survives, along with the sublime music it contains. And this CD is one of the absolute best performances of it I have heard.

Paul O'Dette chose three composers to represent early Northern Italian lute output: along with Vidal's master (Vincenzo Capirola, dated around 1517), there is the music from the two earliest surviving printed lute tabulature books - Francesco Spinacino and Joanambrosio Dalza (1508).

This early lute music is extremely diverse and fascinating, and O'Dette does it full justice in both piece-selection and interpretation. Dalza is best known for his bold dances, which show a strong influence of when the lute was played with a plectrum rather than picked with the fingers. Spinacino stands out for his fiery ricercari, with alternating fast single-note runs and brief counterpointal meditations. But it is Capirola and his vast tapestry of colors that gets the lion's share in this CD (dances, ricercari, vocal pieces set for lute).

Words cannot describe how expressive and varied this music is. Listen to tracks 4 (Ricercare primo), 7 (Padoana bellissima) and 8 (Spagna seconda) to get a sense of the confidence and the maturity that this style had achieved by the early 16th Century.
The lute was rigtfully considered the most versatile musical medium, second only to the human voice - and O'Dette's performance of this incredible music makes you understand why.

Even among O'Dette's excellent CD lineup, this selection stands out as an extraordinary achievement. I could not recommend it more enthusiastically.
