Just like a lot of people I was a little disappointed by this album. I thought it was gonna blow me away like the Keep It Turned On album, but sadly it didn't. There were a couple of songs on here I did like a little bit like Cry Me A River and What The World Needs Now. Rick's voice is amazing... he can sing the phonebook and I would be happy. I think the problem is that the fans really wanted to hear some new material written by him instead of remakes. Portrait is just a little too mellow for my taste. I am grateful that he still came out with new album... it's better than nothing at all. I'm still trying to let is grow on me though. I support Rick's music no matter what, that's what being a real fan is all about.

His voice is still good, but different. More mature and sounds like a jazz lounge act now. Preferred his old sound although disco is dead.

3 out of 5 stars Not a Great Production, Song Arrangement of great classics could be Hard to Swallow.......2006-07-05

I bought this album yesterday and was so looking forward to put it into my CD player with great anticipation and excitement with all the great song choice seen on the back cover. I grew up in the 80's and have lots of fond memories in high-school and Rick Astley songs. I was disappointed however with this album.

Firstly, the "counry-pop" and "soft-rock" arrangement of great classics such as 'Vincent', 'And I Loved You So' and 'Close To You' are very insulting to listen too. I couldn't stop saying, in shock "Oh my god! oh my god!" and skipped to the next track; hoping very hard that it will go uphill from next track onwards.

Unfortunately not. The "hip-hop" treatment to 'Where Do I Begin' and 'What the World Needs Now' is also very hard to swallow.

The "street guitar strumming busking" style of Ms Streisand's "Somewhere" reminded me of the busking entertainment at Sydney Central train station (especially the first 4 bars intro using same chord); not '... peace and quiet and open air...'.

I liked the Bossanova version of "These Foolish Things" and "Nature Boy".

I asked myself, why Jamie Cullum's re-arrangement of "I could have danced all night" and "Singing in the Rain" worked perfectly, but not Rick Astley's attempt? The arranger of all these tracks have a lot to answer.

The acid test, perhaps is to send this album to the idol judge Simon Cowell for an overall verdict to see what would come out from his mouth; to Ms Barbara Streisand to listen to track "Somewhere", and to Ms Dionne Warwick to review "What the World Needs Now'.

That would be an interesting exercise.

5 out of 5 stars WISH COME TRUE FROM A DIE HARD FAN.......2006-02-27

I've been planning to write rick astley to come up with an album like this, reviving some classic hits but done in his own style. I got a copy of this CD as a gift from my sister in Canada, who ordered it in Singapore because the CD is not commercially available in Manila.I hope this CD and his Keep It Turned On CD will also be available in Manila soon, since there are still thousand of Rick Astley fans in this part of our world.
I love Rick's rendition of Close To You, Make It Easy On Yourself, Somewhere, I Can't Help Falling In Love and What The World Needs Now. I think these songs will be most requested when released here soon.

I've owned every Rick CD and I was wowed by Sleeping on the Keep it Turned on CD. Keep it Turned on was a wonderful combination of dance and balads that worked well with Rick's voice. I am what you would call a die hard Rick fan.

This is the first Rick CD that I have not loved right out of the wraper and it is not because it is something new for him.

The best songs are Vincent, I can't help falling in love with you, You Belong to Me, Make it Easy on Yourself and What the World Needs Now.

I did not like the arrangements on this CD and the way the songs were mixed up. Rick has an awesome voice and this CD just isn't him. It reminded me of background music that they play in a hospital or elevator. I was straining to hear, hoping instruments would join in or something. At times, it seemed out of tune..not Rick, but the background seemed out of time or something.

Listening to the title song Portrait was torture..It just went on and there wasn't enough note changes..again..the arranging. It just seemed like a Bad Pop or American Idol audition. I feel so horrible that I even have to write this, but please don't waste your $25+ if you're not a diehard fan. There are a few good songs here, but nothing that WOWs ya like on KITO.

Also, another thing that pissed me off was that in the liner notes, the whole web team was not mentioned. No mention of Susan, Theresa or other staff who voulenteered their time at no cost to Rick or his management and who worked to make the site professional and put out the fires that some members of RANT caused.

I will buy another Rick CD in the future despite all this, but hope this is a Live and Learn experience. I know he is so much better than this.

At least my purchase contributed to the gold lettering on the boat fund.

I feel like I am insulting one of my own. I am really sorry Rick and Tony, but I have to admit, it just hasn't made it and the liner notes were just a further insult.
