For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of Gaston Leroux's gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg's Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher's film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in scope, yet beefed up dynamically via the brawny presence of a hundred piece orchestra and The London Boys Choir. This single disc version showcases all of Phantom's key songs (a deluxe, double-disc edition is also available), with Gerard Butler imparting a welcome, youthful sensuality to his Phantom, making a fine foil for Emmy Rossum's ever-conflicted Christine. Original show orchestrator David Cullen has fashioned compelling new contemporary arrangements to frame Webber's songs -- which now conclude with the lilting, upbeat new ballad he wrote for the film, "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2007-06-20
I have about six PT albums, and this one is the best of them, very highly recommended for prog fans.
NOT Stupid , Actually!.......2007-05-30
This impressive re-master of Stupid Dream once again finds Steven Wilson to be the Master of 5.1 surround sound mixing. The stereo remaster is fabulous in itself, but the music comes alive on the 5.1 DTS disc! You will find plenty to like here from fantastic song structure to virtuoso playing of All instruments by the stellar musicians that are "the Tree". If you enjoy this, like anyone couldn't, then I recommend the DTS 5.1 In Absentia and Deadwing discs as well. Neither comes with the companion CD for the car, but so what! They both will blow you away. For fans of PT, Pink Floyd, Rush, Tool, Etc. In Absentia (Dts)
Not so stupid...but UNREAL.......2007-05-07
This CD is one of their best...I have either heard or have all of PT's stuff, and have heard all of their 'stages' of development'. All are great, from the early spacey to the latest heavy stuff - but this one seems to have 'caught' them in their stage of transition to making more streamlined stuff, but no sacrificing their roots, selling out, or none of that s**t...it is just plain beautiful bloody poetry. The only one to date that comes close is 'In Absentia', which is unreal in and of itself.
This band is taking music to the next stratosphere, so join in and check out this now-remastered and re-released masterpiece from one of England's gems...you WILL get hooked! This is seminal stuff that any music lover will eat up in a second.
You may wonder what the heck to PT sound like...well, think Tool meets Pink Floyd, touch of Dream Theater and Spocks Beard, some Yes and Genesis, well maybe even some spacey bands I don't even know of, and some other stuff I can't put my finger on...but their sound is unforgettable...
P Tree's masterpiece.......2007-04-06
This album represents the zenith of Steven Wilson's marriage of engaging songwriting, superbly creative production values and just a dash of prog to keep the listener on their toes. There's really no weak songs to be found here though listeners will probably find their own favorites. P Tree has been somewhat treading water ever since "Stupid Dream" was released (even with the recent shift toward a heavier sound and style) though the forthcoming "Fear of a Blank Planet" promises a return to the band's proggier early days. This is the best place to start with this band, though I rate the previous release, "Signify", as my personal fave.
Porcupine Tree Rocks!.......2007-03-15
This is one of the most innovative, talented bands that's come along in a while! If you like Dream Theater, Rush or Queensryche you'll love these guys! Also, check out their newer albums Deadwing & In Absentia! Absolutely brilliant!

Before the Mars Volta made prog-metal fashionable again - with a little help from the Dillinger Escape Plan and My Chemical Romance - Porcupine Tree's 2002 US debut, In Abstentia, had already laid most of the groundwork. For the middle-aged British quartet led by Steven Wilson, '70s rockers like Rush and Yes (with whom the group toured after the album's release) never went out of style but instead left behind grandiose scriptures to be studied for all of eternity. So while tighter and more efficient in spots ("Shallow," "Halo"), Porcupine Tree's Deadwing faithfully keeps the technically proficient epics coming, peaking with multi-tentacled 12-minute "Arriving Somewhere (But Not Here)." --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
Porcupine Tree defies categorization. This unique London-based quartet make unconventional, uncompromising music that qualifies them as Europe's premiere art-rock cult band. Porcupine Tree's cogent musical personality is a force to be reckoned with. Porcupine Tree's intelligent and accessible sound will appeal not only to metal enthusiasts and twenty-something dark wave fans, but will also fit in with today's more adventurous alternative station playlists.

Purcell worked immensely hard on his score for The Fairy Queen, but the original was lost. The version on which this performance is based arrived at London's Royal Academy of Music by devious routes a century and a half later. But in Roger Norrington's hands, it emerges in its pristine beauty: you could not wish for a better introduction to Purcell's greatest stage work. Only a "semi-opera," maybe, but one studded with exquisite songs and majestic choruses. The anonymous libretto is loosely based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, but its inexhaustible melodic invention is imbued with Shakespearean magic. Some songs have become concert favorites, notably "O let me weep," but the joy of this double CD is that you discover dozens more, and of comparable quality. Purcell's music breathes in perfect tandem with the words and Norrington creates out of this a riveting symbiosis. The singing is pure Baroque-instrumental clarity of tone, unsullied by any vibrato, and the playing is immaculate. Comedy and pathos are both here in spades; vast space is evoked through the pairing of flutes and the echoing of trumpets. And so are all the colors of nature: Purcell's music foreshadows Vivaldi. --Michael Church
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and Lovely Music.......2004-02-06
This 'semi-opera' is one of the last works of Henry Purcell, the greatest English Baroque composer. Essentially a series of scenes with linking music, The Fairy Queen, like other semi-operas, lacks the integrity of plot and action of real opera. In performance, I suspect this work would be somewhat static, sort of a serious music variety show. The music, however, is lovely. The Fairy Queen contains some of Purcell's best vocal and instrumental work with some components that became part of the concert repertoire. Hearing all the music together is a fine experience, though the semi-opera format tends to work against the dramatic and musical cohesion which can be found in even merely good operas. The vocalists are splendid, particularly Lorraine (as she was then spelling her name) Hunt. The orchestral playing is just as good.
If you like Monteverdi, you will love Purcell.......2002-08-21
Absolutely beautifull baroque opera! The arrangament, singing and instrumentation is superb. If you liked Monteverdi's Coronation of Poppea, it is a must to have this baroque masterpiece! It is too bad that Henry Purcell is not as widely known as Bach, because he should be recognized equally well.

Most famous for her operatic roles and classical recital performances, soprano Dawn Upshaw will surprise her fans and impress popular song aficionados with these superlative renditions of classic songs by Rodgers and Hart. Unlike many of her operatic peers who have no clue how to pull off a true pop style, Upshaw does it expertly, elegantly, and naturally, with class to spare. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
dawn sings Rodgers and Hart.......2007-03-29
No complaints - Dawn is her usual delicious self.
Wonderful.......2007-01-10
Dawn Upshaw uses her beautiful voice to maximum benefit on the Rodgers and Hart songs.
A must album for all lovers of classic Broadway.......2004-08-23
Dawn Upshaw is absolutely marvelous in these renditions of classic Rodgers & Hart songs. Not since Rise Stevens has an opera singer shown such talent for singing showtunes. Unlike Renee Fleming, Ms. Upshaw sings these songs clearly and with perfect diction, without embellishments or unnecessary vocal pyrotechnics. These songs should be sung "straight" as if it were and Dawn sings each one beautifully. Her phrasing is impeccable, her voice is clear like a bell. This album should serve as a case study of how opera singers can tackle showtunes.
Dick and Larry Would Be Pleased.......2004-02-28
As I love both Rodgers and Hart's songs and the voice of Dawn Upshaw, this CD was an obvious choice. Upshaw is one of the very few opera singers today who are equally at home in popular song. Her crystal-pure voice and diction sound completely natural in these sixteen song classics. "He Was Too Good to Me," "Manhattan," "Sing for Your Supper," "Thou Swell," "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," "A Ship Without a Sail," "He Dances on My Ceiling," and the superbly arranged medley of "Nobody's Heart" and "Little Girl Blue" are among my favorite tracks. This is an essential disc if you love Rodgers and Hart.
Great Album.......2001-08-26
Though I prefer her "I Wish It So" or Vernon Duke album, this is a great recording. The voice is a little too bright, but Upshaw does a wonderful job interpreting these pieces and she is never too operatic. It's a light, lyrical collection and lots of fun. I especially enjoyed "Sing for Your Supper," in which she sings her own back-up. If you are looking for a collection of light music sung by a fantastically trained singer, this is it!

Amazon.com essential recording
Although Einstein on the Beach is by definition an opera, Philip Glass's most famous work also transcends traditional music categories. Glass avoided all vestiges of plot in the piece and dug deep into his quiver of repetitions to create an artfully unnerving five hours of brilliance. The instrumental ensemble never exceeds five members, playing electric keyboards, saxophones, flutes, and a single violin. Furthermore, the music congregates around the upper registers, often darting through its loops at seemingly incredible paces. The chorus bears huge chops, creating a dense, if silkenly staccato, series of juts, and a powerful array of higher-register annunciations that ring with the aural power of leaping, blurring filaments. This 1993 version of Einstein truly supersedes its predecessors, stretching to around 190 minutes over three CDs. There is a strong current of postmodern collage throughout the piece, with rafts of pop culture references. But Einstein, after all, is indeed based loosely on Albert Einstein and ends with booming allusions to nuclear annihilation and mathematics. --Andrew Bartlett
