Tchaikovsky: Symphony no 3, Romeo And Juliet Overture / Pletnev
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Pletnev presides over a stunningly good performance of Romeo and Juliet on this 1998 CD, which boasts exceptionally fine, high-impact sound. Tempos are fairly broad, but the reading is tightly wound and suspenseful, explosive in the climaxes. The Russian orchestra plays with remarkable power and finesse, and is greatly aided by the acoustics of that most "authentic" of all venues for Tchaikovsky, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. The account of the Third Symphony is somewhat less impressive, both sonically and interpretively, but then the Third is the weakest of all Tchaikovsky's symphonies, and difficult for anyone to bring off. --Ted Libbey
