lighthearted and tender Beethoven you may like it!.......2005-09-02
Ollie seems to blaze through all this music, extroverted playing to the grandstands.Beethoven would have approved, the ruggedness of the playing here, brittle bright tone, like trumpets(wrongheaded if excessive) in the "Diabelli Transformations". I was quite impressed with his(Ollie's not Beethoven's) readings of the "Well-Tempered Book One" of J.S. Bach; he brought intense utilizations of timbre, or tone colour to bring a different emotive dimension to what are little "portraits" of the human condition, like shaking a baby's rattle, you listen nonetheless. Also gesture, playful, high spirited is used to quite interesting result.Imagining the keyboards of history as you play through Bach. His Shostakovich affinity for Bach,as well was interesting the "preludes & fugues" was equally a probe into readings again of the "human condition" where it is and where it may go. ALthough Dmitri was no great innovator of timbre of modernity he was of the human spirit,of consciousness of where we are now of the vagaries and terror of the 20th Century unabated,Ollie likes to search, as we all do for "something else" in the music not previous found elsewhere, except for his Beethoven.Perhaps he should have read Adorno's wonderful book on Ludwig van("Beethoven,The Philosophy of Music") for a little deeper insight into this master purveyor of forms shapes, and durational structures.Listen however to Sviatoslav Richter's Shostakovich and that is the basic reference point.
Ollie's "Diabelli" here verges on entertainment, plowing into the themes and transformations without much thought and glossing over the more arduous moments. I thought you are suppose to feel the struggle in the music. Arrau said that someplace, and you don't really feel or hear or experience any of that here.Perhaps Olli doesn't see the timbral innovativeness in Beethoven, it is there if you know where to look, as Pollini has done.
You can really appreciate in retrospect the extremely different reading of this same music by Piotr Anderszewski, although Piotr plays like a demon like he is not there always stopping at his own ;comfort zones; of the more lyrical "Diabelli/Beethoven". Mustonen really has nothing new to bring to Beethoven, playing him as if the ink has log dried on the paper, but that should not stop you from keeping with him. I would like to hear his Schoenberg or how about Boulez Olli??,since timbre is what seems to interest to compell interesting readings of what you play, Please hear Rubenstein or Richter, or Brendel, or Jonathan Biss, those are good reference points for Ludwig van.

Customer Reviews:
A good deal to enjoy.......2006-04-15
Though Beethoven could play the violin he was not a virtuoso on the instrument. The piano, on the other hand, was changed as an instrument by him. He was always on a quest for more sonorous and richer sounds and piano makers did their best to oblige. Many of Beethoven's avant guarde ideas about composition and the role of music in self expression started as piano sonatas and piano works. With this in mind, Beethovens compositions for the piano are some of the most outstanding, brilliant, and technically pure works to emerge from any composer. It is impossible not to feel the emotions Beethoven wishes to convey from piece to piece.
The piano sonatas are really self contained dramas. In them, you will hear the expressions of sadness, beauty, rage, and unbounded joy. It is impossible to listen to this collection and not find pleasure in it. The recordings as well as the performers are top-notch. Highly recommended.
Jazzy Ludwig!.......2005-02-17
An excellent set featuring Ludwig van's sets of variations wherein he gets jazzy and swings on catchy tunes! Highly recommended.
NOTE: For those of you who don't understand metaphor: what I'm saying here is that Beethoven used popular operatic hit-tunes of his day and improvised variations on those tunes--as is done in America's original art-form--Jazz. Get it?

Customer Reviews:
do not agree with redgco.......2006-06-01
I do not agree with redgco(?): Tubeuf's liner notes do not aim at the music but at the musician and they are perfect at that;one can only congratulate Sony's editor for having a brilliant critic write about the musician:I am fed up with liner notes about the WOrks,.WE have encyclopedias for that, but too scarce stuff about the wonderful musicians of the 20 th century such as Serkin,Arrau, Kempf etc,not to mention Szell, Walter, etc. This record is a music work but also a music INTERPRETATION and I am glad that for once there is some to read abouthe INTERPRETER!
Good couplings.......2006-05-26
Alexander Morin, editor of the Third Ear publication called this recording of the Diabelli Variations his favorite. It is a wonderful recording, and coupled with the Op.119 Bagatelles and the Fantasia for Piano, it offers almost 77 minutes of music.
There are some negatives. The liner notes were written by an idiot. The writer, Andre Tubeuf, manages to consume 2 pages without saying anything whatsoever about the music. No music analysis, no historical comments--nothing. The Fantasia isn't even mentioned. Then, this waste of paper is translated to 2 other languages. I know that this is a historical recording, but Sony should have had a good musicologist write the reissue notes. So, if you are like me, and enjoy the learning experience offered by good liner notes, then you'll consider other alternatives to this remastered 50 year old recording (the Fantasia was actually recorded in 1970).
The other downside, is that the 11 Bgatelles of Op.119 are not divided into individual tracks but are clumped together into one 15 minute track. But few people would be buying this for the Bagatelles anyway because most would want the Op.33 and Op.126 Bagatelles also. Here, Brendel is your best choice who also includes Fur Elise as well as 3 other Betthoven piano pieces.

This is the largest, most comprehensive, and most valuable collection currently available of the playing of one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Czech Radio seems to have recorded virtually everything Richter played during his frequent visits to Prague during a period of 34 years. Many of the highlights of the pianist's vast repertoire are included here, including 10 Beethoven Sonatas, two Concertos, and the "Diabelli" Variations, along with major works of Brahms, Chopin, Mozart, Ravel, Schubert, Schumann, and Scriabin. These include such unusual items as the first two Brahms Sonatas and the Chopin Ballades. Some of the earlier recordings are muffled in sound quality, and a few (such as Mozart's Sonata K. 280 and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition) are even afflicted with disturbing tape flutter. But most of the recordings sound excellent, and most of the performances are glorious. At the greatly reduced price (15 CDs for the price of 5), this set is a bargain that any pianophile can afford. But if you've collected the original series, beware of discarding them too quickly. An entire CD of Prokofiev--one of Richter's greatest specialties--is missing from this compilation, as are separately issued discs of the Dvorák and Grieg Concertos, which could have made yet another worthwhile disc. For what we have, however, let us give thanks--and also for the space-saving box! --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
for fanatics!!!.......2007-04-21
I bought this set in a store 2 years ago, i paid about$70 for it.thats about what its worth. I resold it on the net last year for about $100. thats really all this set is worth. the chopin is good the beethoven is excellent, the scriabin is good but the recording is terrible. the ravel the same. the weber is also a very bad recording. the brahms was recorded when richter started playing on yamaha pianos because he was going deaf. this renders a very horrible tinny sound, the playing is excellent but the piano is not worthy of the perfornance. to sum it up the playing is excellent on all the recordings but there is only about six disks worth of music that is worthy of giving attention to, $100 thats a fair price for this set. find a good distributer or a good classical music store like tower records{thats where i bought it} its really not so obscure or rare. I sell on the net all the time, I have a reputation for selling rare music and dvds for very reasonable prices. thing is half this stuff is not rare at all. spend $20 take a road trip find a record collector or a store that deals in nothing but classical music and you will probably walk out with this set for $125-$150 or maybe have a real good day and only pay $50. prices that range from $500 to $1000 this is for fanatics or people who are bored and simply have to much money. I would not profit on my worst enemy in such a way. so please at least try my advice. thank you.
Dont hesitate....it's worth every dollar.......2005-02-14
I bought this set two years ago...and today..still...I consider the prize of my collection. Richter's ballades are remarkable, probalby the best he has releases(all four are included)-the diabelli variations are top form as are Rachmaninov Etudes Tab. Despite some sound problems, this is an excellent version of the Pictures and the two brahms sonatas are much better than decca's release. Also included here is Richter's only Hungarian Variations by Brahms( i think). The D960 is good, not the best I have heard, though the second movement almost moved me to tears one night. You will never find a more thorough compilation of high quality performances ranging from the fifties to the eighties. There is nothing here to complain about.
Many definitive recordings here.......2004-03-20
Richter has a way of getting to the heart or to the truth behind any piece he plays. Using his powerful mind, spirtual understanding, and limitless technique, his is able to put his ego aside and let the music speak for itself. Out of the 15 discs, I thoroughly enjoyed 14 of them. The only exception being the Brahms Sonata 1 & 2. I simply do not enjoy listening to either piece. I will now list the pieces in which I believe are definitive performances. Each will be followed with other recordings with which I am comparing them to. 1. Appassionata(Pletnev, Pollini, Rubinstein, Horowitz) 2. Chopin Etude Op.10 No.1 (Perahia, Pollini, Ashkenazy, Lugansky, Wild, Berezovsky) 3. Chopin Nocturne Op.62 No.2 (Pires, Ashkenazy, Rubinstein) 4. Chopin Polonaise-Fantasy Op.61 (Kapell, Horowitz, Pollini) 5. Scriabin Sonata No.5 (Horowitz, Evgeni Mikhailov, Sofronitsky, Bernd Glemser) 6. All Chopin Ballades-definitely some of the most passionate interpretations on record(Perahia, Ashkenazy, Nikolai Petrov, Zimmerman, Kissin) 7. Beethoven Piano Con. 1&3 (Perahia, Serkin, Rubinstein) 8. Liszt Transcendental Etudes-excluding Feux Follets, best performance is given be E.Kissin (V.Ovchinikov, Berezovsky, Arrau, Bolet, F.Kempf) 9. Valses nobles et sentimentales (Cecile Ousset, Berezovsky, Pogorelich) 10. Miroirs-Richter perfectly enters the sound-world of Ravel like no other pianist. His tone and phrasing are out-of-this-world. (Cecile Ousset, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Minoru Nojima, Gieseking, Anne Queffelec) Almost every piece he plays sounds important and has an indescribable satisfaction to it. Buy it! It will give you hours of listening pleasure.
Essential Music.......2003-09-17
After owning a few dozen recordings with Richter (including a few made in Czechoslovakia), buying this box-set would have been a stretch had it not been for a couple of assumptions: a) Richter's confessed affection for several things Czech b) the promised value for money. Now, to sum it all up, I am so glad this set exceeded my expectations by so much!
Indeed, I could detect in these live performances, given over 3 decades, what might have been Richter's love for music, audience, and Czechoslovakia. The atmosphere is of warm intimacy, punctuated by veritable moments of musical tension built and delivered so masterfully, yet jocular at times. Such unique moments, not always present in his other recordings, I posit, are the fruit of Richter's being in resonance with his part Slavic and part German audience.
As for the presentation, suffice it to say it is simply great. Kudos to Harmonia Mundi Germany! The master-recordings seem to be more than decent--considering their casual nature. The booklet is concise and informative--notes on the composers and pieces as well as notes on Richter's approach to those pieces/composers.
Had I been asked to pay twice as much as I did after listening to this music I would have done it!
A Treasure Trove of 'Live' Richter Performances.......2002-04-10
Recorded by Czech Radio between the mid '50s and the late '80s, this fascinating CD set is one of the best available documents of the great Sviatoslav Richter in concert. Recorded sound is variable (the set rates 5 stars just the same), and most of the pre-1970s performances are mono, but no fan of great pianism should be without this set. And although many performances here are Richter "standards" (Skryabin sonatas, Beethoven's 'Appasionata' and 'Tempest' sonatas, Schumann's 'Fantasie,' to name just a few), there are some rarities as well. Let me give just three reasons why I find this set so indispensable. Richter didn't perform Beethoven's monumental 'Diabelli Variations' and 'Hammerklavier' sonata until quite late in his career; the very well recorded Prague concert recordings presented here are fully the equal of any released on other labels. Likewise, the performance of Brahms's First Piano Sonata (which exists in several Richter versions)is truly first-rate. Nevertheless, the Brahms disc is more valuable for presenting the best Richter performance I've heard of the less well-known Second Sonata, plus the only known Richter performance of the composer's 'Variations on a Hungarian Tune.' Finally, let me say to those who have long known - and loved - Richter's magnificent 1958 Sofia performance of Moussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition,' this set presents a roughly contemporary (1956) Prague account that is almost as good and much better recorded. So Richter fans shouldn't hesitate and those who don't know the the man's art will find in this set a convincing demonstration that the late Ukrainian/Soviet pianist was one of the greatest artists in the history of the instrument. One final note. This is a reissue of a boxed set that appeared several years ago, also on Harmonia Mundi. For the reissue, the fifteen discs have been transferred to sturdy cardboard envelopes and housed in a space saving 'soft' box that is elegant to behold and very space-efficient. Full liner notes duplicate those on the previous issue, but the price has been handsomely reduced: fifteen cds are now offered for the price of five!

Thrilling.......2002-05-14
Brendel offers electrifying performances of Beethoven's boldest, most experimental works for piano: the "Hammerklavier Sonata" and the "Diabelli Variations." These are not Beethoven's most popular works, but they are among his most profound, and they repay repeated listening. Alfred Brendel brings to these works what is often called humor -- but is really absolute alertness and aliveness to Beethoven's experiments in unpredictability.
If you don't already own recordings of the "Hammerklavier" and the "Diabellis," Brendel is a superb choice. If you do, you will find these interpretations a revelation. (Brendel has also recorded these works on Vox, but those performances -- though very good indeed -- are not the equal of the ones here.)

Even Alfred Brendel may not approve of the Beethoven performances heard on these discs. Brendel is several decades older and wiser now, and may well find these products of his relative youth as callow as I do. The magnificent Diabelli Variations, one of Beethoven's greatest compositions, is trivialized by this undercharacterized playing, which lets so many important moments go by without saying anything special about them. It's worth the extra money to spring for a great performance of this music, like Richter on Praga PR 254 023 or Oelbaum on Bridge BCD 9010. The smaller pieces also sound bland. Even at a low price this set is no great bargain. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
ONE OF THE TOP PERFORMERS!.......2005-10-10
Again, for me, Brendel comes across with his usual "swingin" and sure rhythms and his subtle power. He plays through a wonderful comprehension of the LVB works. And he transmits that magically!
Also, with A.B., we get every note played clearly--in "high-definition." Astonishing to hear this even in the fastest passages. For this listener, Brendel's clarity and grace are a pure excitement. (Ever wonder if he was LVB in a past existence? I wouldn't be surprised.)
Flat, humorless, earthbound.......2005-07-21
Egads! This is almost a "party album." It currently wins the "Worst Piano CD In My Collection" award. (That will soon change, as it's headed for the second-hand shop.) Brendel takes Beethoven's wry commentary on salon music and does nothing with it except play each variation earnestly and soberly. I have to wonder how long he lived with and thought about the score, and if he studied the history of the work, and Beethoven's opinion of Diabelli, his waltz, and the whole publishing project with which Diabelli was engaged, before making this recording. I say this in part because Brendel's next recording of the piece, a live 1976 traversal on Philips, is light-years ahead of this in terms of characterization of each variation. Here each is treated the same, as grante-heavy and devoid of life, of wit, of contrast, of irony. Elements such as comic repetitons in the waltz's flat-footed rhythm or exaggerations of its Viennese "drawing room" flavor are treated with all the seriousness of the Eroica Variations.
The Bagatelles are the same, treated more like a baga McDonald's hamburgers--each one overcooked, identical and bland. These are some of Beethoven's most unique and characterful works--what you play for people who say the old man had no sense of humor. (Beethoven, I mean; I don't know what to say to people who say Brendel has no sense of humor.) These flat readings never go beyond the ink on the pages.
This is extremely competitive territory. Despite the previous reviewer who says Brendel made mainstream listeners aware of the Diabellis for the first time, these works have been recorded over and over since the phonograph was invented practically. There are many better recordings, starting with the first, Schnabel, and continuing with Horszowski, Ugorski, Brendel 1976, Anderszewski, and Kovacevich. All have their blemishes and eccentricities, and no one completely works for me (Schnabel and Kovacevich come closest), but all are better than this sorry recording, with some nasty and poorly-spliced tape edits. For the Op. 126 Bagatelles, two words for ya--Richter, Praga. For the rest, go shopping, listen to some other pianists. Anything has got to be better than this.
a classic.......2001-02-19
Unlike your own reviewer, who emphasizes Brendel's blandness of manner in the Diabelli variations, I prize the care for depth and scope of compositional perception that the pianist's "above the self" manner of approaching these astounding variations is able to reveal, which would have been subsumed in an emotional approach to the material of Diabelli's very straight-forwardly constructed waltz. This recording brought made the work available when it was all but unknown by the general, classical music public, and its contemporary critics faulted it as "cerebral" but never as thoughtless or eccentric. The amount of salient, compositional thought that Brendel reveals is breathtaking and affords a window onto the landscape of Beethoven's own interests and attitudes towards both composing and the piano, both of which have been uniquely seminal for piano music in the centuries that followed, down to the present. I remember being breathtaken both by the work and the pianist's accomplishment when the recording first came out, and all the committedly artist pianists I know consider Brendel's accomplishment a kind of benchmark for their own work. Certainly, this recording contributed to Brendel's reputation in its early days, and it remains one that no serious pianist wants to overlook - something in its way unique. I booted up my computer just now in hopes that Amazon would have it available, even after all these "yea many" years, to order it as a gift to a friend who has resumed serious piano lessons as a mature adult, having stopped decades earlier while still a child, and is playing Diabelli duets and listening enthusiastically to later CD's of Brendel playing Mozart. I am delighted to see that Amazon's reviewer's low rating of this truly classic recording and monumental artistic achievement coincides with a dirt-cheap price for a two-CD set offering these variations together with all of Beethoven's bagatelles, so I am checking the "buy now" box now with a will. This reminds me that when the recording came out Brendel was - I believe - the first to record all the piano music of Beethoven. As part of a brilliantly considered, comprehensive overview of Beethoven's output for his most beloved instrument, in which no technical hurdle daunts the pianist at all and musical ideas rule completely, this performance takes the occasion seriously to an unparallelled degree. Thanks to Brendel's seemingly "selfless" commitment to Beethoven's art, the recording enables an auditor to share in that remarkable overview as a full, human equal, whether he is an artistic equal or not. I think Beethoven would have been delighted - had he been able to hear this performance.

Album Description
VQR Digital masters are engineered in spaces - usually concert halls, auditoriums or cathedrals - which are selected for acoustical characteristics best suited to the ensemble and the music being recorded. The goal of the recording process is to achieve an intimate focus on the instruments and a transparent rendition of performance within the favorable acoustics of the selected space. The minimal editing on this CD was mostly to remove intrusive noises. No sounds were altered or created by digital manipulation.
Customer Reviews:
This is not Beethoven.......2006-05-11
I must say that the Diabelli Variations are quite well played... but the Bagatelles Op.126, one of the highest and sweetest of Beethoven's works are incredibly badly executed. The fastest ones, extremely fast, and the others without the acurate expression. Many people possibly disagree with me, but if they wonder "what am I looking for", simply listen to the same bagatelles played by Andor Foldes, Murray Perahia, Jeno Jand?, Alfred Brendel and others. I think the difference is broad.
Beethoven would like this.......2005-01-06
I have listened to this recording several times in the 2 days since receiving it. The pianist's love for each passage is evident throughout the performance. You can hear thought behind every note and phrase for the entire 70+ minutes.
The playing is bold and with seemingly effortless technique that dazzles in the most difficult passages. The quality of the recording and performance should satisfy the most perfectionist listener. Hopefully we will hear more recordings from Ms. Perrone.
Absolutely beautiful.......2003-06-18
This CD captures the essence of a solo piano work by Beethoven in it's subtly phrased passages. Ms. Perrone makes the piano cry with emotion, yet delivers crisp clarity and logic to the more complicated movements. A must have CD for all discerning pianists and lovers of great piano performances.
Everything a Beethoven recording should be........2001-05-16
This is a beautiful disc! Perrone's performance has all of the facets one would hope for in a Beethoven piano recording. She exhibits power and virtuosity in the demanding, explosive passages of the 2nd and 4th bagatelles and in the more technically difficult of the Diabelli Variations. And her ability to express Beethoven's elegance in the more lyrical and delicate passages is truly world-class. There are many fine examples--the 31st Diabelli Variation is especially breathtaking. But it is not only the playing that makes this disc worth having--it is also extremely well produced. The sound is clear and resonant in all registers, and the liner notes will satisfy even serious students of music theory.
This ranks among the finest Beethoven solo piano recordings I have heard. (This is no exaggeration! Listen for yourself!) I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who loves good music.

A great compilation.......2004-04-25
Ever since I got a disc of Alfred Brendel playing Beethoven's favourite piano sonatas, I've had a special attention for his recordings and his view on music. To me, he is one of the best examples of a perfectionist. Lazy listeners call his way of playing pedantic but that is completely untrue. Listen more closely to any of is recordings and you'll hear an endless variety of colours, the most shimmering nuances and above all, tremendous warmth. But he is certainly not a perfectionist in the negative sense that is sometimes attached to the word: aside from being imposingly musical, his performances always have a great feeling of 'humanity'. There are many other great performers of the German repertoire (from Haydn to Brahms) but Brendel's recordings have a special familiarity to me, and he gives more than anyone else the feeling to me that the composer's genuine thoughts are present in the performance.
Brendel has a very special tone that accustoms itself very well to many different kinds of pieces. One of the essays in this great set deals with the many different sounds Brendel can create at the piano, something that intrigues me very much too. It is fascinating to hear how he touches the keys in his Mozart and Haydn recordings: here, he gets a sound out of the grand piano that sounds almost like the ancient fortepiano. Combined with his sharp and almost biting playing, he preserves some of the spirit of the time in which the works were composed, but combines this with the much richer and detailed sound of a modern instrument. Haydn's sonatas sparkle and so do Mozart's concertos.
In his Beethoven recordings, which are very well represented in this set, Brendel uses a somewhat similar style, but adapts more to the Beethovenian sound world: his tone is still aggressive but a little mellower and greater. He focuses a lot on small details and plays with a rather gentle sound in the variations, while his Hammerklavier doesn't avoid the grand gesture. The Piano concertos with Levine are full of joy and superbly crisp. Beethoven's works can be performed in a more massive or sweeter way, but that's what other recordings are for.
Brendel's Schubert is very notable for its total avoidance of the sweet and precious image of the composer that has settled somehow. Here, Schubert is presented as an ultimately dark and despairing composer, an image that is very appropriate regarding his general output. While Brendel sometimes tends to calm a bit of the hysteria in pieces like Beethoven's Appassionata, in Schubert he mainly emphasizes it. Hear how he attacks the Wanderer Fantasy, especially in the last minutes. Or how severely he gets the A minor sonata D784 to its throat. This is essentially the way I think Schubert should always sound.
It will be surprising for some to notice how much of Liszt has been recorded by Brendel, and also to hear how they sound. The Liszt recordings in this set show the composer from his most intellectual and imposing side. Brendel may generate an enormous sound that not everyone will associate with him from "Orage" in the Années de Pelerinage, but it is impressive rather than showy. Similarly, the Sonata receives the most detailed and complete performance I've heard, the Piano Concertos are simply stunning on all accounts and the variations on a Bach cantata show both the composer and the performer at their very best. It may be surprising to hear but I think you won't hear any better Liszt than this.
Finally there's a box dedicated to Brahms and Schumann. Brahms is another surprise. Brendel's D minor Concerto is one of the most impressive readings I've heard, close to Serkin/Szell, and his B flat is fine too, if a bit less impressive. His playing style here somewhat resembles that of his Liszt: it is rich, grand and always commanding. Few performers are as well able as Brendel is to match the endlessly complex musical thread of these two concertos. The fourth Ballade op.10 settles among the best readings - Kempff, Arrau, you name them. The Schumann pieces are performed in a way resembling Beethoven's smaller works: they create the same familiar living-room image, and it gets even more beautiful when oboist Heinz Holliger joins him to play a few folksong-like pieces. The set closes with a wonderful Schumann fantasy.
The track listing say that there's a bonus disc included as well, containing Brendel's first recording of Liszt's Christmas Tree suite, but my own set did actually not contain this bonus disc. With or without that disc, this is a set any piano aficionado should not miss. The only drawback can be the price, which is pretty high (not surprising with such a huge set)--if you can find it at all, now that the set seems to be OOP. At any cost, this is one the best box sets I own. If contains a thorough look at one of the most profound and intellectual artists of recent time and gives endless enjoyment.
Liszt.......2001-05-11
I recently purchased the boxed set of just the Liszt items from The Art of Alfred Brendel. I learned to love Schubert piano music by listening to Brendel, but Liszt was something of an exploration. And what a guide to take you on the journey! If you get the opportunity to get the Liszt set don't turn it up in preference to the more respected composers - Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert etc.
Incomparable Brendel.......2000-12-29
I wish to focus on the works of Liszt included in this gargantuan package. Brendel is held in universal esteem, regarded by many as the greatest living pianist. His reputation is of unimpeachable musicality and seriousness of purpose (which does not contradict his ability to find musical humor wherever it lurks). He shows unparalleled ability to get to the musical core of the "Great Repertory" (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms); his performances leave mere pianism far behind. His championing of Liszt's music is especially important for just this reason. Liszt is too often accused of flashy superficiality. Nobody can accuse Brendel of this fault. And his Liszt recordings are among the most intellectual and probing, yet most moving, of any. He reveals Liszt as a daring and supremely important master. The pyrotechnics of the piano concerti are invested with real meaning, and the utterly spare, laconic late pieces become profound meditations on the human condition. His readings of Benediction de Dieu dans la Solitude and of the Variations on Bach's "Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen" make one grateful for the very existence of music -- and for the capacity to capture it for posterity in recordings.
Beutiful.......2000-04-05
This is beutiful music. I have played some of his pieces on my flute and they are absoultly gorgeous. If you are a true classical music lover then you must buy this and have many nights by the fire with this wonderful music in the backround.
