Editorial Reviews
From the Artist
Each CD tells the story in two ways, first with words and then with music. Each track of narrative describes the action and Ira Ross suggests what to listen for in the music. It is followed by the related musical portion. This sequence is repeated for each major episode in the entire opera. The language used in the narrative is informative and easily understood. Each CD will be most enjoyable and helpful if it is listened to before and after watching the opera live, on videotape or TV, or listening to it on the radio or hi-fi. These CDs are a wonderful way for grandparents and parents to introduce their family to the Magic of Opera. Even if you never see the opera, listening to these CDs can be a great joy!
About the Artist
For me, OPERA IS LIFE. This is my reason for producing the series "Opera For Everyone." I love all of opera: the music, the drama, the singers, the orchestra, the scenery, the costumes, the lighting-- everything! I say this not as a member of the audience, but as a participant in the action; one who listens and watches and feels the enchantment and excitement of the whole show. One of the great gifts of opera is its universality, its ability to present experiences that are relevant to our...

This collection is chock full of some of opera's juiciest moments, sung by some of opera's greatest voices. Many are familiar whether you know their names: The elegant Barcarolle from Les Contes d'Hoffmann, the lazy, hazy soprano-mezzo "flower" duet from Lakme, the boastful "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, and the "Toreador Song" from Carmen sound like tunes from our subconscious by now; one could say the same about "Musetta's Waltz" and the other Bohème excerpts, as well as Figaro's rousing aria from The Barber of Seville. But the gorgeous quartet from Rigoletto's last act, as sung here by Pavarotti, Sutherland, Milnes, and Tourangeau will enchant, as well, the sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor is dazzling, and if you don't know the "Sogno di Doretta" from Puccini's La Rondine, you're in for a beautiful treat. An aria from Tosca with Pavarotti will bring tears to your eyes. A truly fine anthology. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Nice intro to opera.......2002-11-09
Being somewhat of a novice to opera, I found this c.d. to have a nice variety and be easy to listen to. I'm not saying it's the absolute best rendition of every song (which is pretty subjective anyway) but I actually like every piece on it -- rare for a compilation. Overall, I'd say it's great for someone who just likes listening to beautiful music and singing, as well a good jumping off point for those looking for an opera to delve more deeply into. Pretty good for kids and the opera shy as well -- nothing too harsh, screechy or challenging. My 2.5 yr old loves it.
Selection for the Ages.......2000-02-22
This is indeed a marvelous selection of beautiful Opera, both for the beginner and for the well-listened veteran. Pavarotti makes wonderful choices from the world of Opera, and brings it home to the listener. The arias are breathtaking, and are recognizable to nearly all people. This CD is perfect for the listener of any age, and the buyer of this certainly won't be disappointed!

Great introduction into the world of opera.......2004-04-03
I now have an understanding of how to listen to and appreciate opera. I plan on purchasing my first opera CD.
Fine Background while Listening to Madama Butterfly.......2002-07-11
Even for one already familiar with Puccini's Madama Butterfly, this Opera for Everyone disc provides an excellent recounting of the flow of the story interleaved with a number of highlight arias distributed through the opera. Ira Ross's love for the opera shines through his narration and adds to the enjoyment of listening. All the voices are excellent, especially that of Miriam Gauci as Madama Butterfly. I think this would also serve as a fine first hearing for those not yet familiar with the opera.
