Amazon.com Music Reviews
Elvis Presley never sounded better than he does on these recordings made in Memphis at Chip Moman's American Sound Studios in January 1969. The artist was still on an incredible high following the success of his legendary NBC-TV "comeback" special, which had aired a little over a month earlier. Eager to record some relevant music after a decade of horrible movie soundtracks, Presley decided to work with Moman's smash-making (122 hits in three years) Memphis house band. Indeed, four charting singles came from these sessions--"Suspicious Minds," "Don't Cry Daddy," "In the Ghetto," and "Kentucky Rain"--as well as two critically acclaimed albums, From Elvis in Memphis and Back in Memphis. This two-disc set includes all the music the King recorded during that stint at Moman's studio, ranging from Neil Diamond, Bobby Darin, and Beatles covers to current and old country hits ("Gentle on My Mind," Johnny Tillotson's "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'") to a cover of Chuck Willis's classic "Any Day Now" that tops the R&B original. Of special note is "Long Black Limousine," a song about a huge star returning to her small hometown in a hearse. All the originally released American recordings are available on the From Nashville to Memphis box set. RCA fleshes out this collection with previously unreleased alternate takes (including the in-between studio chatter), as well as the Darin tune ("I'll Be There," a hit for Gerry & the Pacemakers) and a snippet of one previously unheard tune, "Poor Man's Gold." There's been much debate about the mix, but these tracks sounded great on vinyl in the late 1960s, and they'll continue to sound great for years to come, no matter the format. --Bill Holdship

History Preserved.......2007-07-10
His 69 recording session at American Studios in Memphis might be one of his all-time bests. This session gave use timeless standards like Suspicious Minds,Kentucky Rain,In The Ghetto and Don't Cry Daddy. But Elvis didn't stop there.Power of My Love,Long Black Limosuine,Any Day Now,Without Love,Only the strong survive,Move On,From a jack to a king,I'll hold you in my heart are beautiful gems brought to life by Elvis' dramatic voice and talent. He doesn't just sing these songs. He tears into them.He opens them up to different possibilities...a different sound and feel...he gives the song life. Some how he infuses his energy and power into these songs.Don't take my word for it...listen for yourself.
THE KING OF ROCK N' ROLL LIVES!.......2007-06-25
I will be writing a review on the legendary historic masterpiece 2-CD set entitled "SUSPICIOUS MINDS, THE MEMPHIS 1969 ANTHOLOGY" by THE WORLD'S ALL-TIME GREATEST ENTERTAINER that is considered by millions of fans as well as the many music critics the world over as THE KING OF ROCK N' ROLL. I give you America's most favorite and beloved son ever and the pride of Tupelo, Mississippi and Memphis, Tennessee, E-L-V-I-S P-R-E-S-L-E-Y! "SUSPICIOUS MINDS" was originally released in 1999 on Compact Disc on the RCA Records label which is manufactured and distributed by BMG Entertainment. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic album or the legendary artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.
What can I possibly say about ELVIS PRESLEY that hasn't already been said? ELVIS PRESLEY will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for not only being one of the very few early Rock n' Roll pioneers ever, but for recording perhaps, Rock's all-time most sacred songs ever. If that wasn't enough, after all of these years, ELVIS would be voted in many magazine polls and be given the honor as the fans choice as being THE ENTERTAINER OF THE CENTURY with THE BEATLES coming in a very close second. In my opinion, ELVIS PRESLEY was the most completely perfect entertainer and showman ever. And because of this fact, ELVIS will also forever be remembered for being rewarded and crowned with Rock's most cherished and prestigious title in all of music history, THE KING OF ROCK N' ROLL. ELVIS PRESLEY would wear his crown proudly throughout his incredible reign and ruled his Rock n' Roll kingdom as well as the whole world with class, respect and dignity. ELVIS truly live up to that honor as well as everyone's expectations. In reality, ELVIS had a way with women. ELVIS would win every woman in the audience just by twirling and shaking his hips alone. But most importantly, ELVIS would let his God-given talented voice accompanied by his own rare unique blend sound style of music, do all of the talking on stage. And when ELVIS wasn't singing but taking a small break on stage, he talked the talk. In reality, ELVIS had an over powering image and physique that was so natural that he would easily and gently take control of his audiences. This is due to the fact that ELVIS would utilize his most charming charisma resulting in performing confidently with limitless explosive energy thus taking himself and his audience to a higher level. In my opinion, ELVIS was one of the very few entertainers in the music world that truly knew how to utilize his charisma skills which would result in igniting and wooing all of his audiences until he finally won them over and had them in a submission. ELVIS also had a very natural sense of humor. ELVIS had a natural way of making his audiences burst into laughter.
Being the complete entertainer that he was, ELVIS was on top of the world from 1955 to 1958 and 1960 to 1977. However, there would be two major events during the course of ELVIS' incredible reign that would affect and change his life forever. The first one, of course was being drafted for induction in the U.S. Army in 1958. ELVIS considered it his call of duty and would do his part as an American to defend his country and did so with grace and dignity. The second and most devastating and traumatic blow that ELVIS PRESLEY would ever experience in his entire life, was when his mother Gladys Presley died. In my opinion, the day his mother Gladys Presley died, alot of ELVIS would die with her forever and would never be the same again.
When ELVIS completed his call of duty and obligations with the U.S. Army, he would be honorably discharged in 1960 and would quickly concentrate primarily and mainly on establishing his acting career and be taken seriously as a leading contending actor. Throughout the 1960's, Elvis was obligated by a signed movie contract resulting in him filming many movies thus putting his live performing on hold. However, it wouldn't take very long before ELVIS would realize that he would soon grow tired of getting up early and going to the movie set everyday. What ELVIS did realize is that he missed and craved the attention of performing in front of a live audience. Perhaps, it was for the best that ELVIS took a long break from live performing because it rejuvinated him and restored his love and passion for live performing. Until then, ELVIS would act throughout the majority of the 60's in hopes of desperately and quickly wanting to honor and complete his movie contract obligations. After his movie contract was honored, ELVIS would be free at last to return to live performing.
ELVIS would experience a little taste of live performing with the NBC televised special "ELVIS, THE 68 COMEBACK SPECIAL" which would air in December 1968. THE KING HAS TRIUMPHANTLY RETURNED!
Which now brings me to the legendary historic 2-CD set album I'm about to review for you today. In 1969, with ELVIS already making all of the necessary arrangements with his manager, the late Colonel Tom Parker, ELVIS was now ready to begin his quest and concentrate fully in returning to live performing. This time period is considered by many biographers, to be one of the most crucial time frames in ELVIS' career. ELVIS also realized that times have changed since he last performed live and he needed to record fresh and vibrant new music to flow with his blood through his veins in order to raise his performance to a higher level thus resulting in delivering a more improved, entertaining and explosive show. With this in mind, ELVIS would begin searching for new song material and begin vocal preparations prior to laying the vocal tracks down in the recording studio. The stage was set for January 1969. The place, Chip Noman's American Sound Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. In my opinion, the 1969 Memphis sessions were the best and finest moments in ELVIS' career. These sessions are by far, ELVIS AT HIS VERY BEST. These legendary historic songs are without a doubt, a true testament of the brilliance, musical creativity and strive for musical as well as vocal perfection by a real true legendary music icon. These sessions also represent a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary entertainer that was truly indeed, way far ahead of his time.
It is now time to let the gifted voice and music of ELVIS PRESLEY to do all of the talking and back it up musically as it was truly intended. The "SUSPICIOUS MINDS, THE MEMPHIS 1969 ANTHOLOGY" released in 1999 begins with DISC ONE starting with the incredible ELVIS stamped trademark Rocker "Wearin' That Loved On Look," the heavenly and beautifully slow orchestrated turned fast mild Rocker "Only The Strong Survive," the beautifully slow and well arranged song sung with such raw power, feeling and emotion as only ELVIS knew how to sing it, "I'll Hold You In My Heart," the beautifully slow sounding smooth Rocker "Long Black Limousine," the beautifully slow country song "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'," the unbelievable country Rocker "I'm Movin' On," the blistering and explosive ELVIS stamped trademark Rocker "Power Of My Love," ELVIS' God-given talented gifted voice would have made any slow song sound great and this one is no exception, "Gentle On My Mind," this song is vintage ELVIS revisiting the 50's sound and bringing it up to date in 1969, "After Loving You," the beautifully slow and well sung vocal arrangement by ELVIS, "True Love Travels On A Gravel Road," a beautifully mild number with a touch of a fast and bright atmospheric sound, "Any Day Now," the beautifully slow and orchestrated song with powerful and meaningful lyrics, "In The Ghetto," ELVIS sings this song with such conviction, raw feeling and emotion like he was truly singing it to his late mother, "Mama Liked The Roses," the true ELVIS stamped trademark Rocker "Suspicious Minds," the magnificent and well recorded mellow Rocker "You'll Think Of Me," one of the most beautifully slow and well sung songs that ELVIS ever delivered, "Don't Cry Daddy," the slow and powerful country number "The Fair Is Moving On," one of ELVIS' all-time finest vocal performances in the studio, "Kentucky Rain," A REAL ELVIS ROCKER that kicks a*s, "Stranger In My Own Home Town" and a beautifully slow number with a powerful and emotional vocal arrangement by ELVIS, "Without Love (There Is Nothing)." END OF DISC ONE.
DISC TWO contains alternate outtakes of all of the songs I reviewed for you on DISC ONE. All of the outtakes sound excellent and could have easily been used instead of the regular ones that we are accustomed to hearing. These outtakes add more fuel and life into all of these legendary songs. There are also other tracks listed on DISC TWO that I will need to review for all of you which begins with the rare and well arranged song "This Time / I Can't Stop Loving You," an extremely rare song for ELVIS to sing, "From A Jack To A King," the beautifully slow country number "If I'm A Fool (For Loving You)," a beautifully well arranged and sung orchestrated song "Do You Know Who I Am," the beautifully arranged acoustic song "A Little Bit Of Green," the slow and soothing mild song "And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind," the slow but powerful mild Rocker "This Is The Story," ELVIS' powerful rendition of the BOBBY DARIN classic Rocker "I'll Be There," ELVIS' breathtaking tribute and rendition of THE BEATLES immortal classic anthem "Hey Jude," the groundbreaking ELVIS stamped trademark Rocker "Rubberneckin'," "Poor Man's Gold (Incomplete)," the beautifully and well sung vocal arrangement by ELVIS, "Inherit The Wind," the ELVIS stamped trademark country Rocker "My Little Friend" and the beautifully slow and smooth orchestrated song "Who Am I." END OF DISC TWO. May I also add that these performances are ELVIS' best vocal arrangements ever. ELVIS was definitely on fire during these sessions.
The "SUSPICIOUS MINDS" album is a very special album for everyone of all ages to hear, experience and enjoy. That was ELVIS' intention and he proved it by delivering it vocally, with perfection on tape for everyone to hear and enjoy. This is truly a special priceless treasure gem that should be considered a necessity for every music lover's CD collection. "SUSPICIOUS MINDS" has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherrished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, ELVIS PRESLEY will and always will be THE KING OF ROCK N' ROLL. There is no replacement. There will never be another ELVIS PRESLEY in our lifetime. Despite ELVIS' failing health in the final years, mainly in 1977, ELVIS' God-given talented voice never diminished or failed us. ELVIS always gave it his all to all of us while performing on stage and more. I guess you can truly say that on that sad and fateful day of 16 August 1977, the day ELVIS PRESLEY died, alot of Rock n' Roll died with him forever. The ELVIS legend and legacy lives on and nothing could have proved to be more evident than receiving the highest ultimate honor possible by being inducted as a member of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. With this in mind, I guess it is safe to say that ELVIS has forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and his many contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten. So here's to you with love ELVIS. Thanks for the many great memories and moments. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. ELVIS PRESLEY FOREVER! R.I.P. Elvis Aaron Presley, THE UNDISPUTED KING OF ROCK N' ROLL, Born 8 January 1935, Died 16 August 1977 at age 42. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
I'm savin' the last take for me........2007-01-23
After the success of Elvis Presley's NBC TV special in December of 1968, he needed to follow up that momentum with some new recordings. So, in January and February of 1969 recorded at American Studios in Memphis for the only time. American Studios was run by hip young producer Chips Moman. Chips and the American Studios house band prodded Elvis into making some of the best, most contemporary recordings of his career. The classic album From Elvis in Memphis, which many consider to be Elvis' best album, was assembled from these sessions. The classic hit singles "In the Ghetto", "Suspicious Minds", "Don't Cry Daddy" and "Kentucky Rain" were also recorded at this time. This collection features all the songs recorded at these sessions. Disc One starts with the twelve songs on From Elvis and Memphis, and ends with eight other popular songs. Disc Two features the rest of the songs recorded at the sessions, plus alternate takes of several popular songs. These are the best recordings of Elvis' career, other than his very first recordings at Sun Records. A must get for any Elvis fan.
The comeback sessions!.......2006-09-15
After years of recording mediocre soundtracks, Elvis' management loosened their reigns on him setting him up to work with Chips Moman at Memphis' American Sound Studios to record new material. This was Elvis' long-overdue return to making real music. And what a return it was! The new environment and material seemed to refresh Elvis' creative spirit and he delivered some of the best performances of his career! The sessions continued the comeback started by the 1968 TV special and produced several big hits: "In The Ghetto", "Suspicious Minds", "Don't Cry Daddy", and "Kentucky Rain". The second Cd includes some demos and alternate takes. All-in-all it is an excellent collection, however, casual fans would probably be better off to save a few bucks and buy the "From Elvis in Memphis" CD instead of this 2 CD set. It contains most of the better tracks here and all the hits.
Inexplicably, after the success of these recordings Elvis would never work with Chips Moman again nor be given this amount of creative freedom and quality material.
The song list is awsome--but not this version..............2005-12-17
I think most of the other reviews here are very accurate on their enthusiasm, admiration and satisfaction with this breakthrough album. However, I am very disappointed with THIS EXACT VERSION because I lost another version of these recordings and replaced it with this one. The big difference is that Elvis's voice is often overwhelmed by the instruments and music--sometimes you can hardly hear him at all mixed in with violins, piano and back-up vocals. Extremely disappointing is Suspicious Minds--which is almost entirely sung as a duet with who know who. There is another version--the name of the album escapes me, BMG and RCA have released so many versions of Elvis's music--but there does exist another version (versions) that highlight Elvis's voice more appropriately. The list of songs, and the groundbreaking return of this mega star is unquestioned--but something went wrong in the remastering and/or editing of this version IMO.

Masterpiece: Greatest Hits.......2007-03-11
This CD is as close to perfect as one can get. It is actually a greatest hits album as it contains all of Candi's chart material that I am aware of. In addition, some of these tracks - those from the disco period - are the extended or remixed versions, like the magnificent Young Hearts Run Free, Victim and Honest I Do.
Her voice is so authentically soulful that she turns every song into an experience, including the country classic Stand By Your Man. The production is superb and the material demonstrates that Staton was a sensitive and accomplished interpreter of every musical style: disco, pop, soul, gospel and every type of R&B she covered.
Her debut hit I'd Rather Be An Old Man's Sweetheart and I'm Just A Prisoner are funky 1960s soul whilst Now You Got The Upper Hand is a lilting tour de force of a ballad. The rhythmic You Got The Love is a most powerful and stirring gospel song that was also a dance hit in the UK in the early 1990s.
On such a masterpiece it is difficult to select highlights, but I have to also mention her atmospheric interpretations of In The Ghetto and Suspicious Minds, the joyful Sweet Feeling, the uptempo Run To Me, the disco masterpiece When You Wake Up Tomorrow and the heartbreaking He Called Me Baby.
Every single song is tuneful, expertly produced and sung with heart and feeling. One just wants to listen over and over again. Candi Staton may be a relatively obscure figure in the R&B universe but I would say this album is essential for all those who love soul, gospel and disco music.
