The Best of Erick Satie.......2007-06-11

The reason I bought this product, is because I was familiar with the 3 Gymnopedies of Erick Satie and also another of his work: The Gnosiemme (I'm not sure about the spelling) No. 4. After listening to the CD I felt very happy with it because include both versions of the Gymnopedies, the Orchestral and the one for piano and of course the Gnosiemme No. 4 which I now like it very much. The pianist makes justice to Satie's work and if you like his work is a good buy.

A forerunner to minimalism.......2007-04-13

Satie is a forerunner to minimalism. Each piece of his music is a beauty. He also had great influence on many famous composers and musicians in his age. This album is one of the best piano classical.

Got Satie?.......2005-07-27

... Well folks. This may be the perfect album to get started. This features some of the best-known works by the wierd and witty Erik Satie, including the Gymnopedies (both the original piano and the orchestrated versions), the Gnossiennes, just to name a few.

The performance done by pianist Klara Kormendi is relatively plain and simple, just as Satie might have wanted. Some of his music is actually not too difficult to play... A great CD at a budget price. Kudos to Naxos for a good performance at a good price.

Also, what I'm equally impressed is the fact that in this "appreciation" album, the listener will actually be listening to many "sets" of pieces. Some of those albums (Beethoven and Mozart for example) are mere collections of selected tracks, many just one movement of a large work, such as a symphony. In some you will only be listening to selected numbers of different large "sets" of pieces. In Chopin's for example one may listen only few of the 20+ nocturnes (No. 2 for example), 15+ waltzes, and 20+ mazurkas he wrote, so one would not feel complete listening to the whole "cycles" of short pieces. Satie, fortunatley, prefered using tiny sets of pieces, most of them only comprising of three movments each. Plus each piece is short. ALL of the three Gymnopedies. ALL of the six Gnossiennes. ALL of the three Sarabandes. ALL of the three nocturnes. One can already feel happy listening to couple "sets" within a single CD.

Once again, this may be the perfect album to get started with Erik Satie. And get ALL out of those pieces!!!

Pieces of Pieces--4.5 stars.......2007-06-05

According to Keith Anderson's CD insert (in English, French, & Spanish), "Georg Philipp Telemann [1681-1767] was among the most distinguished composers of his time." He was a friend of Bach's & was Bach's 2nd son's godfather. This CD contains many of Telemann's best & most famous works. I have other versions on CD's, esp. the Suite in A-moll (minor), Viola Concerto in G major, Trumpet Concerto in D major, & table music. For more of the latter--there's a 2 CD set "Dinner Music" B0001XBBPO Georg Philipp Telemann; Dinner Music Vol. 1 & 2 with Concertos by Johann Hummel & Franz Richter and "Musique de table" by Essential Classics/Sony. This CD is a generous 71:07 in 23 tracks/movements. It's strength is in its selection & variety. This, however, is also its weakness--many selections are pieces of pieces--not the entire composition. Thus, they appear shorter than other versions--mostly due to this excerpting. Similarly & simultaneously plus & minus, except for 2 by the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, the pieces are performed by different orchestras. Thus, I'd say this CD is a fine introduction to Telemann, but suggest further exploration to comprehend the fullness of his compositions. Still, I would give this a 5 star except for one thing. The lead-in piece, arguably Telemann's most famous, the A-moll is simply IMHO played too fast. It lacks the majesty shown in other renditions of this piece. Not a good way to start.

A great baroque album by one of the masters of baroque composition.......2007-03-04

George Philipp Telemann is a great introduction in to the world of baroque music. This album was the very first classical album that I bought (about 10 years ago) and I have found my love for baroque and classical music to increase exponentially ever since.
This album shows the true beauty of baroque by using instruments to their fullest potential. The baroque period was one of growth in knowledge of the arts and music theory played a large part in that knowledge.
Telemann, in my opinion, was one of the greatest baroque artists. I know that works such as Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" and Handel's "Messiah" were the defining works of baroque, but Telemann used the smaller and more intimate groupings like chamber music. Even his orchestations were minimalized so as to accentuate the instrument on which he chose to focus.
Telemann was a master of the baroque age, if somewhat unsung, and I would recommend any of his albums, but this one has a special place for me as it was the first classical album that I bought in a now excessively large classical library.

A Great Introduction at a Great Price.......2004-12-06

I had heard some of Telemann's work on interent classical stations and wanted to learn more. This is a great introduction to a great composer at a great price. I found the quality satisfactory and my stereo is fairly advanced. The music flows nicely, which is not always the case with "best of" compilations. This will become a core part of my classical collection.

Delightful Baroque Variety.......2003-12-23

Here for baroque lovers or those interested in exploring one of its most prominent composers is a collection of some of the very best of Telemann.

What an enormous output this great German composer put out! From church music to chamber music, Telemann uses all the styles of his era, from Italian to French to German, he does them all execeptionally well with his own style of clarity and fluidity.

The Viola Concerto is absolutely gorgeous, and it's a shame that this resonant, sensuous instrument doesn't not have a wider repertoire. Kyselak is marvelous in his phrasing and expressiveness.

The Recorder Concerto by Stivin is just delightful and exemplary of the fine liltiness of baroque. The Quartet in G Major from Tafelmusik I is admirably performed by the Orchestra of the Golden Age with passion and sensitivity.

The Overture in D and C Major, Darmstadt, is just exquisite. This is exciting music with great swellings and undertonings throughout.

I thoroughly enjoy baroque and this collection with its varying instrumental groupings highlighted and the variety of styles and genres is truly stimulating and relaxing to listen to. For the price, this is just an outstanding find.

When i first picked up this cd, i must say that i was somewhat dubious in doing so. 'It's just another Grieg collection', i was thinking to myself. However, this collection is more than this. It offers an excellent insight to Norway's greatest composer. Fine for anyone who wishes to find out more about this great composer.

The best at your hands.......2000-08-21

Naxos has released dozens of "The Best of" CDs, and this one is a great addition, just as any other CD. It might be a coincidence, but this particular CD got me hooked on Classical Music. For newcomers to Classical Music, I would definitely recommend this fine CD. At budget price and with the DDD quality, it is worth buying. For Beethoven experts, this might just be a worthy addition to their repertoire.

This is the first cd I bought when I started my classical cd collection six years ago. Now I have over a hundred classical cds, of pianists ranging from legends like Martha Argerich, Artur Rubinstein, Glenn Gould, Alicia de la Roccha, Evgeny Kissin, Alfred Brendel, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Philippe Entremont, Daniel Barenboim, Claudio Arrau, Murray Perahia to emerging lights like Lang Lang, Yundi Li, Stanislav Bunin, Cecile Licad, etc.

But I always come back to this cd, at the same time wondering why despite these deeply introspective performances, Idil Biret is not readily judged as one of Chopin's leading interpreters. This is Chopin at his best and most pure.

Stand-outs are her performances of Fantasie-Impromptu in C sharp minor, Ballade No. 3 in A flat major, Farewell Waltz, Tristesse Etude, Berceuse in D flat major, and the Scherzo No. 2 in B flat minor. I prefer Biret's Ballade and Berceuse over Rubinstein's, any day.

Of the hundreds of Chopin CDs out there, you cannot go wrong with this one. For the price, for the choice of works, and for insightful interpretations. Bravo, Idil Biret. Thank you!

The selections in this CD are taken from Idil Biret's recording of the complete piano works of Chopin (Naxos 15 CD) which won a "Grand Prix du Disque Frederic Chopin" in Poland in 1995. A wonderful and high quality CD at a bargain price!.......2002-05-15

This is one of my favorite collections from NAXOS. The 1812 Overture, conducted by Adrian Leaper, is exciting and dynamic! Many of my favorite pieces are featured here: the Waltz from Sleeping Beauty, the Waltz from Serenade for Strings, Andante Cantabile (Symphony #5), June (Seasons), and many others. The musicianship of the artists and the sound quality are excellent. High quality CDs need not be expensive. I bet you'll enjoy this CD as much as I did!

NAXOS is good to discover new/younge artists, but it should also apply good techniques in the recording. If Ilya is playing in front of us, we will be easily moved, but the bad recording simply destroyed his performance

I agree with the above review. This is incredibly good music. The sonatas with violin and guitar are beautiful, and the caprices are certainly astounding. Everyone knows Paganini was an unmatched violinist, but he was also a great composer. This disc is a steal.

This is some of the sweetest music of all times. Fortunatelly for me, but sadly for the performers it's also very cheap.
