Brilliant and Unfettered.......2007-01-08

As a Bach-sons devotee I am constantly searching for enlightening performances of their music. CPE, in particular, exhibits many idiosyncratic style features that remind me of JS's dramatic toccatas and JC's singing-allegro melodicism. In my view, Hinterhuber carefully balances the contrasts with moments of intense intimacy. Unlike with so many recordings of 18th-century keyboard music from JS Bach to Mozart, Hinterhuber avoids the uber-elegant gracefulness that often overlooks the early-classic style subtlties and ambiguity. His playing is fully aware of every phrase turn and style juxtaposition. If you have listened to the Bach Partitas or Mozart and Haydn Sonatas ad nauseam for lack of more repertoire, get this disc.

The Enlightenment Bach.......2006-01-28

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was a kind of musical rebel in that he rejected the tenets of his father, old Johann Sebastian, and struck out on his own musically rather wayward-seeming path. Of course, in truth, his way was the newest thing and extremely popular in its day. He even became, at an early age, the court harpsichordist-composer at the court of Frederick the Great, a hotbed of Enlightenment activity. And in his day his music was much more popular than that of his fusty old dad. He was part of that group of composers who broke away from contrapuntal baroque composition and began something called the 'empfindsamer Stil.' That's a term difficult to translate precisely but it means something like 'sensitive, or sentimental, style.' One of this music's characteristics is that it wore its feelings on its sleeve, and was almost manic-depressive in its rapid cycling of moods. What sounded to the ears of the older generation like formless rhapsodizing became the foundation for what later was tamed and formalized in the music of Haydn. But even more, it led the way to the further emotionality of the Romantics like Beethoven, Berlioz, Chopin and Schumann.

On this CD is a representative sampling of the keyboard music written by Carl Bach. One can hear the sudden starts and stops, the surprising harmonies, the awkward-sounding juxtapositions. It is characterized by marvelous melodies, almost no counterpoint, wild dynamic contrasts. We hear four sonatas (in D minor, F sharp minor, A major and C major), two rondos (in D minor and B flat major) and the particularly lovely Cantabile in B minor from the Sonata, Wq.55/3 (H. 245). The pianist is Christopher Hinterhuber, a young Austrian earlier heard to great advantage on excellent CDs of four-hand Schubert piano music (with Rico Gulda, Friedrich's son), and of piano concerti by Ferdinand Ries. His playing here is technically assured and he certainly seems to get into the wild spirit of this music. Unfortunately, to my perhaps tin ear the sound of the recorded piano is a bit thin and almost clangy at times; I had to check the booklet to make sure Hinterhuber wasn't playing on a fortepiano or Hammerflügel. Still, this is a wonderful introduction for anyone who has never been exposed to the quirky music of CPE Bach, and at this price Naxos makes it easy to hear some possibly heretofore unexplored repertoire.

As odd as it may sound to call this CD of small musical gems "almost romantic," I have to agree with Melvyn Sobel's use of these words to describe this music composed between 1748 and 1786. These pieces are played with exquisite precision and, at the same time, with a mood of playfulness and elegance. At times, in some of the slower pieces, such as Track 8, the Andante con tenerezza of the Sonata in A major, Wq. 70/1, there is a meditative, melancholy quality and a haunting beauty that reminded me, however faintly, of Chopin or some of the slower pieces in Tchaikovsky's "The Seasons." On the whole, however, these are not melancholy pieces, but rather light and whimsical in their mood, which is not to say that they are superficial. They are composed in the "style galant" of the era that is considered as transitional in style between the Baroque and Classical. Actually, given that most of these pieces were composed when Haydn was also composing his works, one might simply call them Classical. The CD insert has a well-written and very informative essay on the career and music of C.P.E. Bach, including one to two paragraphs of commentary on each of the sonatas and the rondo. As written in the essay, [C.P.E. Bach] won the admiration of the greatest composers, of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. The influence on Haydn, in particular, is attested by that composer's early biographers and is, in any case, apparent form his own keyboard sonatas." Whatever label musical historians choose to assign to C.P.E. Bach's six sonatas and one rondo on this CD, they are beautifully and warmly played by Francois Chaplin; the sound quality of the piano is absolutely clear. This CD is a very nice addition to the collection of anyone with an interest in 18th century classical music and is warmly recommended.

MORE CPE TREASURES UNEARTHED!.......2001-01-27

CPE Bach (1714-1788) and Haydn (1732-1809) were contemporaries, as is so obvious from this enchanting disc, and, if I didn't know better, I would think that these keyboard sonatas were the work of the latter, rather than the former. The compositional "nod," though, goes easily to CPE, because by the time Haydn was writing his "late" sonatas, CPE had passed on to the great firmament. Since I love Haydn's piano sonatas--- can't get enough of them to suit me--- Naxos has done me a big favor by releasing these rare CPE Bach works. And what lovely works they are! Immediately appealing, fanciful, expressive--- almost romantic--- and inventive. There's not a dull note to be found. Francois Chaplin plays CPE with rare mood, variety and nuance. Just the right touch; just the right feel. It makes for fascinating listening and comparison. The sound is slightly ambient, yet intimately suited to the music.

THIS MUSIC MAKES ME FLOAT!.......2000-06-16

Of Bach's twenty kids, CPE was no slouch, musically, and had quite a romantic bent. These Sonatas for Flute and Harpsichord, as recorded on this CD, will whisk you away. I say "as recorded on this CD" for a good reason: the sound quality is so... ethereal... that it simply mesmerizes and transports one. The music, not at all staid in the standard baroque manner, is quite forward-looking and warm. It's sunny for a beautiful day, or, just as readily, ruminative and perfect for kicking back during an afternoon rain. Ah, the glories of CPE's music! And the melodies. And the sound Naxos gives us in this beautiful recording.... all to revel in. For the little money it takes to feel THIS good, this is a simple, affordable pleasure. Cripes! Life's hard enough as it is.

I have this set and the pieces on it do not correspond to what is on your website. If you or anyone can straighten this out I would appreciate it. My set has the same Sony number, and there is only about 50% overlap between its contents and what you list.
